Town & HistoryThe history of the present town of Plnbegins far back in the past. As early asthe middle Stone Age people settledhere, drawn by the abundant food in thelakes and the shelter offered by islandsand marshes.

During the Migration Period Slavic tribesreached eastern Holstein, where theybuilt a stronghold on the island ofOlsborg. They named it Plunewhichmeans water fr ee from ice.

In 1139, the Holstein Count Adolph II vonSchauenburg ended the Slavic dominanceand built a new fortress on the mainland.

That protection allowed the developmentof a market settlement, which receivedtown chartership in 1236.

Due to its strategic location on a narrowstretch of land between the lakes and theriver Schwentine, Pln was an importantcentre of the county of Holstein until thecounty fell to the Danish king in the 15thcentury.
