PRESIDENT’S PRESIDENT’S PRESIDENT’S PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGEMESSAGEMESSAGEMESSAGE

If you get the chance, take some time in the coming weeks to visit your favorite place to fish in the vicinity and listen very carefully. With any luck, you will hear a lurking trout or two murmuring something about those giants beyond the film and, perhaps, daring us to dance with them once again. And, of course, dance we will. It’s not like we have a choice in the matter for opening day is fast upon us and I imagine that you are as eager as I am to revel in our angling avocation. Indeed, I sense that eve-ryone who attends the board meetings for the Fred Waara Chapter of Trout Unlimited (the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Landmark) is a bit slap-happy at the thought of a new season of fishing adventures while we also pursue the conservation of cold-water fisheries in our area. It certainly is bound to be a busy spring and summer for your lo-cal TU Chapter. On the immediate horizon is our annual banquet, to be held in the NMU Great Lakes Rooms the evening of April 15th. As you know, this is the only fundraising event the Fred Waara chapter hosts each year and the extent to which we can meet our conservation objectives and enhance fishing opportunities is directly related to the generosity of our sponsors and those who attend the event. Each and every dollar we raise goes to educating youngsters, improving stream habitat for cold-water fisheries, or enriching the lives of others through the process of teaching the art of fly fishing. This year, in addition to a tasty buffet and cash bar, the banquet will feature our usual attractions such as door prizes, bucket drawings, both a silent and live auction, and specially designated games for chapter initiatives such as our forthcoming Reeling-n-Healing fly fish-ing retreats for local cancer survivors. In contrast to previous years, we are restricting the purchase of raffle tickets for our premium items to only those attending the banquet; that means you will have even better odds of walking away with a valuable keepsake from the evening’s activities! Beyond our fundraising efforts, a significant portion of our time

in the coming months will be devoted to our evolving Escanaba River

Watershed initiative that is designed to evaluate, enhance, and restore the

historic brook trout fishery in the tributaries upstream of the Boney Falls

Dam. To date, our chapter and the Escanaba River Association have

Four FWCTU members attended the Fox Valley Chapter Fundraising Banquet

in Appleton, Wisconsin. It was well-attended and everyone had a great time. The Banquet speaker

gave a most interesting presentation on his Round-the-World fishing trip including stops in the Sey-

chelles, Singapore, New Zealand and Hawaii.

Up-coming on May 13 will be the Copper Country

Chapter of Trout Unlimited Annual Banquet. If you might be interested in attending, contact

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.' The other man said, 'What is the name of the restaurant?' The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... The one that's red and has thorns.' 'Do you mean a rose?' 'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?'

secured a number of partnering commitments from the Michigan Depart-ment of Natural Resources, enlisted the assistance of fisheries biologists from the state TU council & Northern Michigan University, and have completed an aerial photographic reconnaissance of the Big West Branch sub-watershed that will serve as our initial project area. In the near future, we will get our waders in the water to install devices to mon-itor water temperature and to assess impairments to the sources of cold water and streambed composition in those tributaries that are so essential to the reproduction and vitality of trout populations. By the fall, when the waters cool again & when we plan on sponsoring another fish stock-ing on the main stem of the Escanaba River, we hope to estimate the number of brook trout in feeder streams of the Big West Branch using hydrostatic shocking so as to begin to understand where the watershed is today, what it is capable handling in terms of healthy fish populations, and how we might improve the fishery in a durable way. It will proba-bly be a buggy & laborious process yet I predict that, along the way, the women & men in our partnership will use other, more exciting means of sampling the existing trout population. And you are invited to join in the fun as well. In this newsletter you will also find an update on our Salmon in the Classroom program, information on other chapter events, and invita-tions to attend fundraisers for other affiliates in our regional harbor of the Great Lakes. So, yes, there are lots of fun and productive times ahead. Those trout in the current—the ones that tremble as we approach yet find the wherewithal to laugh behind our backs—have little idea of just how much fun we have working in their fishy interests. Let’s rod-up and teach them a thing or two at the end of April!

SIC is preparing for the

release!! Our participat-ing schools report good survivability of the salm-on this year and the kids are doing a great job tak-ing care of their charges.

The fish are in the 2-3 inch size range and eating as much as they can. FWCTU is working with the schools to schedule their re-lease dates ~ approximately May 1st. This year’s schools include Bothwell, Negaunee Middle School, Gladstone Middle School and Gilbert Elementary School. If you would like to join us for the salmon release and see the excitement generated by SIC, please call or email Bob Jensen, 906-228-3052/[email protected]. We'll keep you advised as the schedule is set & hope you can attend one or more of the schools fish releases.
