appearances are not deceiving. THe Surface iS SenSuaL. All the experiences we acquired as we became acquainted with the material world in our childhood days are encoded in the picture of a surface. We see and literally feel the rock-hard texture of stone, see and hear the clinking clarity of glass, see and smell the fresh grain of wood. When we look at a ma-terial, all the moments and all the physical and sensual experiences that we encountered with the material and which we need in order to have a sense of ourselves well up inside us again. This has nothing to do with something being genuine, like real wood, for example. Genuine is a rational, notional category, at best a moral one, but by no means one that is aesthetic and thus sensual. It is about the sensual experiences stored in the optical information, which come to mind with the picture of the material and are verified by the surface. For example, coloured surfaces are purely surface phenomena, yet their impact can be highly sensual.Sensual perception is not only widely underestimated, it also goes astray in our increas-ingly economised and science-driven world, which as a result loses its creative motor and the power of feelings to reveal the world and values. Surface Book is dedicated to counter-acting this trend and assuring that the surface – in the broadest sense – finds its rightful appreciation.
