Robert Parker W ine Advocate report by Neil M artin
So richtig Herzklopfen
South Africa: The Cape Crusaders
I am occasionally asked: what is the m ost exciting New W orld country on the scene at the m om ent. New
Zealand? Argentina? Chile? England? OK...m aybe not the last one.
The aforem entioned all contribute their clutch of outstanding wines...even England. But if I have to
give a single answer then I would reply: “South Africa.” Trust m e when I say that I would not believe if
som eone had predicted I would answer as such several years ago. I should offer som e reasoning to m y
argum ent.
You see, the unavoidable truth is that South Africa is a country beset by a jerem iad of woes: political
instability, conspicuous poverty, accusations of worker exploitation, the lingering stench of apartheid
and econom ic m alaise. On that last point, I have heard on several occasions that a worryingly large
num ber of wineries are discretely up for sale as financial reality sinks in, particularly for fair-weather
investors who m istakenly assum ed setting up a winery would be easy. Then there is the entrenched
apathy/prejudice against South African wines. Consum ers and journalists spent years m ocking the
m iasm a of reductive Pinotage wines and industrial fodder that clogged up superm arket shelves: both
tarnishing and stigm atising the country’s international reputation. And writing this report, it is true
that m any wines hovering around the ten dollar entry-level failed to m ake the grade. Even so, in m y
opinion they are generally far m ore acceptable and attest to an im provem ent in quality com pared to a
decade ago.
Against this backdrop, a new generation of winem akers are beginning to m ake their m ark; coalescing to
form what you m ight call a “m ovem ent.” These are winem akers in their twenties and thirties with the
fortitude, tenacity, talent and determ ination to realise their own vision of what South African wine can
becom e; what is required in order to create genuine world-class wines; young guns who have worked
vintages overseas and return arm ed with a global perspective. They use South Africa’s disadvantages to
their strength. They m ight not have the financial m eans to establish deluxe, ostentatious, gilded
wineries and a crack m arketing team to prom ote their wares. Instead they use their m odest m eans to
eke out high quality, individual, lim ited production wines that will hopefully find consum ers with
discerning, appreciative palates. They are waiting to be discovered.
I guess you could say that the seeds of this revolution were sown in Swartland by the likes of Eben
Sadie, Adi Badenhort and Chris M ullineux. Now their tenets are being adopted by young winem akers and
spreading the gospel to regions such as Hem el-En-Aarde, Elgin and that m ost traditional, conservative
of wine regions, Stellenbosch. This bodes well for South Africa’s future, but that is not to say it will be
an easy ride...far from it.
W ith the onslaught of so m any regions to cover for this publication, I intended to produce an
“interm ediary” report in 2012 and author a m ore com prehensive one thereafter, in order to keep South
Africa at the forefront of readers’ m inds. Lo and behold, this “interm ediary” report is host to nigh 500
wines! M ost of these were tasted at the office of W ines of South Africa in London and then, when I
attended the Cape Show in late Septem ber; I delayed the report so that I could include notes from m y
brief trip to the country itself. Alas, m y daughter donated her cold and rem arkably for the first tim e in
ten years, hopes of expanding the report were abruptly curtailed.
AC Swartland?
Before m y m etabolism crashed and burned, I did find tim e to spend a m orning concentrating upon
Swartland, to offers readers an overview of what is happening down there. I have excluded the wines of
M ullineux, which I nevertheless tasted blind in London, since there was an apparent conflict of interest
with a m utual friend. So I asked Robert Parker if he would kindly review them in m y place. Even without
Chris and Andrea’s superlative wines, Swartland rem ains a hotbed of innovation and ideas, even if I
would tem per enthusiasm by rem inding readers that it is an unforgiving, heterogeneous region of
terroirs that can be exploited by less quality-driven producers content to trade on this fashionable
nam e. In this respect, Swartland has parallels with Burgundy. Just because it says Cham bertin on the
label, doesn’t im ply the wine itself will m eet expectations. Ditto Swartland.
It was a fascinating exercise: taking a pew behind an old school desk at the Cape Show, each Swartland
producer com ing over and presenting their wines and giving m e an opportunity to discover m ore about
the winem aker. One of the hot topics being m ooted at the m om ent is the idea of an “AC Swartland.” A
m ajority of Swartland’s leading winem akers are bonded by tenets you m ight loosely term as “natural”
winem aking i.e. organic or biodynam ic viticulture, the eschewing of enzym e addition and m inim al new
oak (preferably none), sparing use of sulphur and judging by their appearances, obligatory beard, which
m ust be disconcerting to poor Andrea M ullineux. Readers should go to Sw artland Independent W ine
Grow ers to peruse the entire list of core values. I support such a m ove towards regulation. It lends a
region a philosophical dim ension when growers m ust abide by com m on rules that bind them together
and can potentially im prove quality if done the correct way. The question is whether they can shift this
m anifesto towards legal requirem ents when undoubtedly not every producer would com ply?
The Treasure Hunt for “OVC”
One can detect a slight shift towards white grape varieties, which in the long-term can be South Africa’s
calling card (alongside their splendid Rhône blends.) There is a growing realisation that the country is
host to precious parcels of old (bush) vine Chenin Blanc (OVC) that is now producing exquisite, often
profound wine often at world-class prices...and without the spectre of prem ature oxidisation. If I were
to single out one wine that exem plifies what South Africa can achieve in 2012, then unquestionably it
would be Chris Alheit’s stunning debut: Cartology. Everything from the philosophical, terroir-driven
winem aker to the vines to the profound wine and even the packaging, attest to the pinnacles that can
be reached. I do feel that in order to get the m ost out of Chenin Blanc, it needs to be coupled with an
exacting, perhaps obsessive winem aker, preferably one who has adopted organic or biodynam ic
techniques. Although I am not a preacher for such practices, Chenin Blanc responds to a natural
approach that elevates varietals to a higher plane.
I asked Eben Sadie if he would kindly explain why that m ight be true from a technical standpoint. “The
higher the acidity of the natural m ust, the better the entire progress for no other reason other than pH
and the stability of all other factors,” he replied. “It is com m on knowledge that the higher the acidity
and the lower the subsequent pH, the better the working of SO2, in whatever m easure, be it very little
or m ore in a wine depending on the user/ vigneron. The reality is the SO2 m olecule just works better.
All wines in the world contain SO2, it is produced by the yeast even if it is 6 – 12ppm , however little.
The reality is that even if we could im agine a wine without any SO2, it will still be better preserved with
lower pH and higher acidity as even the O2 m olecule on that level luckily functions less well and the
entire process of oxidation. (unknown)And to get to this the usage of naturally higher acidity varieties
like Chenin just m akes that m uch m ore sense. (unknown)On the other hand (and this is often now
forgotten with the whole ‘I want to see no alcohol in the wine m ovem ent – the under 12% som m eliers’)
the reality is alcohol is also a preservative. And here again Chenin is am azing as it has dem onstrated,
like Riesling, that it has great levels of ripeness potentials from Savennières to Bonnezeaux styles.
Probably the m ost im portant point is that Chenin can produce both alcohol and acidity and that is the
preservation equation.
Then on skin ferm ents with white grapes, the skin to juice ratio in Chenin seem s perfect, as it is the
case probably with Palom ino and Clairette and it just works perfect in term s of tannin extractions and
the better pH again as a result after the skin m acerations, as with skin m aceration a lot of potassium is
absorbed from the skin and this starts the buffering effect of the pH and acidity form ula, but Chenin
m anages it m uch better than for exam ple Viognier, which is a com plete disaster in both instances with
skin ferm ents or flor oxidized styles.
All in all, it is a m atter of sem antics but Chenin is for sure the king of whites and it versatility never
seem to fail to am aze us as it produces glorious wines on the 45 degree parallel North in France and
glorious wines in the Cape on the 33 degree parallel South in South Africa. It is the true cham eleon of
white grapes and deserves the respect of world. Unfortunately unlike som e of the obvious m onolithic
varietals, you do need a brain to drink Chenin!”
W hile on the subject of Eben Sadie, at the last m om ent I had the opportunity to taste his rare “Old Vine
Series” bottlings. Suffice to say, if you think that South Africa cannot produce profound, intellectual,
individual wines then you really need to introduce you palate to these exquisite wines. They are not to
everyone’s taste. Indeed, I likened them to the wines of Lopez de Heredia in Rioja, since they are
uncom prom ising wines that never intend to appeal to everyone. But if you are seeking wines from
m eticulously sourced old vines that are natural and brim m ing over with personality, then you really
m ust try these wines and preferably share them with like-m inded wine-lovers.
I was also im pressed how som e of South Africa’s stalwarts are tweaking their style and m oving away
from the heavy-handed winem aking that has tended to dom inate previous vintages. W hether it is
M eerlust’s Rubicon 2008 or the Anwilka 2009, there is a discernible shift towards purer, m ore elegant
wines that show better balance and that oft-forgotten virtue, drinkability. Perhaps these winem akers are
observing and reacting to trends around the world or the new generation of “terroirists” – it does not
particularly m atter. W hat is clear is that South Africa’s wine scene is changing in a positive direction.
The question is when the rest of the world will not only take notice, but start giving this country that is
overdue.
As I m entioned, I will hopefully be returning to South Africa next year to conduct a m ore
com prehensive report and continues seeking out the “Cape crusaders” such as Chris Alheit, Craig
Hawkins and Alex Starey who will defined the future. I foresee a gradual winnowing of wineries that are
successful in either financial or qualitative term s that will be the basis for exciting wines over the
com ing decades.
