Description of the ServerNet Switch Cleaning the ServerNet Switch

8 - English A26361-K492-Z121-2-7419

Description of the ServerNet SwitchDer ServerNet-Switch verbindet drei oder mehr ServerNet-Knoten (bis zu 6 Knoten). Either the Xport (X network) or the Y port (Y network) is used at the ServerNet PCI Adapter (SPA) for thispurpose. An SPA-X link connects several nodes via their X port, an SPA-Y link connects nodes via their Yport.A ServerNet Switch may use only one SPA link type. High availability of the configuration can beachieved by using an X network and a Y network. ServerNet nodes are identified by means of theirnode ID.

Using two ServerNet cables ensures that you have an error-tolerant configuration, which will help toprevent cable faults. If, for example, the X cable fails, control switches to the Y network, automatically and transparentlyfor the applications. You must plan a separate ServerNet switch for the Y network.

In the actual ServerNet Switch version the SPA link is predefined as an X network; the node ID isset accordingly. The network is switched over using the X-Y switch in the ServerNet Switch. Whichnetwork is set is indicated by the LED on the front of the ServerNet Switch. The node ID depends onthe port used and is permanently set in the ServerNet Switch firmware (see also SWIFT testprogram).

Testing the ServerNet Switch Troubleshooting and tips

18 - English A26361-K492-Z121-2-7419

Troubleshooting and tipsIf you receive the message LINK DEAD when running the SWIFT program, check the following:

• The ServerNet Switch is switched on.• The ServerNet cable is correctly connected both at the node and at the ServerNet Switch.• The SPA is correctly installed on the node, the card is firmly inserted in the PCI slot (see also

Technical Manual for ServerNet PCI Adapter, SPAF Test).• The SPA port used (X or Y) corresponds to the network preset in the ServerNet Switch and to

the network selected in the SWIFT program (indicated in the top part of the SWIFT mainmenu).

• The settings of the ServerNet node IDs are correct.• You have specified the correct ServerNet ID when invoking SWIFT.• The ServerNet cable is not faulty - test by using an intact ServerNet cable.

If link is alive is displayed but running the external transfer test produces a non-zero errorcount, you should then check the following:

• The SPA is functioning correctly. Check this by running an internal loopback test (see chapter"Running the Internal Loopback Test”).

• The node is communicating with the ServerNet Switch. Check this by running an externaltransfer test for this node (i.e. enter the following after the DOS prompt: SWIFTxx localID0).

iErrors occurring on a specific node may be reported by other nodes included in thetest run.Once you have solved the problem, you should reset the error counter to 0. To dothis, strike any key to terminate the test run and enter E in the main menu to restartthe external transfer test.

A26361-K492-Z121-2-7419 English - 19

Running the Internal Loopback TestTo run an internal loopback test, enter I in the SWIFT main menu and note the screen output:

If there are no errors, the following is displayed for the local node: LINK ALIVE and Errors = 0. Ifhowever LINK DEAD or Errors > 0 is displayed, the SPA is faulty and you must replace it. In theinternal loopback test the message LINK DEAD/ALIVE does not refer to the external cable. Oncethe internal loopback test has run satisfactorily for about two minutes, strike any key to return to themain menu. In the main menu enter Q to quit the test.

Firmware Update Carrying out a firmware update

20 - English A26361-K492-Z121-2-7419

Firmware UpdateThe data for the ServerNet Switch firmware update and the DOS program for carrying out thefirmware update are shipped on a 3.5" diskette and can be ordered at the customer service. DieDateien müssen auf eine bootfähige Diskette kopiert werden. The update can be performed on anyserver which can be booted from diskette and which is connected to the ServerNet Switch.

If the ServerNet System Area Network (SAN) is operating both an SPA-X and an SPA-Y network, the firmware on both ServerNet Switches must be updated. The update program must then be runfor each ServerNet Switch. In the following the ServerNet Switch for the SPA-X network is referredto as the X ServerNet Switch, the switch for the SPA-Y network as the Y ServerNet Switch.

iIf firmware updating fails and, as a result, the ServerNet Switch no longer functionscorrectly, you should replace the ServerNet Switch. In this instance, please contactour service. It is not possible to use an old firmware update for purposes ofrecovery in this particular case.

Carrying out a firmware updateFirmware updating comprises the following steps:

Ê Select a node in the ServerNet cluster from which you want to carry out the firmware update.

You may select any node which has a ServerNet link to the ServerNet Switch to beupdated.

• To carry out the update for an X ServerNet-Switch, the node must be connected to theServerNet-Switch via the X port.

• To carry out the update for a Y ServerNet Switch, the node must be connected to theServerNet Switch via the Y port.

If a ServerNet Switch has a free port, a non-networked DOS system or a server not yet included inSAN management can be connected to the ServerNet Switch in order to perform the update. However, in both cases the system must be equipped with an SPA.

If an X and a Y network are operated in the SAN, it is advisable to connect the server to anX ServerNet Switch and to a Y ServerNet Switch.

In addition, the server must be configured so that it can boot from diskette.

Ê Shut down the selected node normally, i.e. exit all applications and then the operating system.

− If the node was part of the SAN, this operation affects the other nodes of the SAN as theycan no longer communicate with this node.

− If the node was added to the SAN for purposes of the firmware update and was notpreviously part of the SAN, the shutdown operation has no effect on the other nodes in theSAN.

Ê Switch off the node.

Ê Insert the diskette with the firmware update in the drive and switch the node back on again.

− The node boots from diskette. You are shown the MS-DOS prompt once the bootoperation has completed successfully.

− The firmware update cannot be carried out if the node does not boot from diskette.

Ê View the contents of the diskette by entering the dir command. Note that:

− the name of the firmware update program is FWUPvv, where vv indicates the version.− data is contained in the file LITv.hex, where v indicates the version.

This information is also included in the Release Note.

Ê Enter the name of the firmware update program, e.g. FWUP14

The licensing and copyright information is displayed.

Ê When prompted, specify whether an X or a Y network is to be updated.

− Enter X to update an X network.

− Enter Y to update a Y network.

The update program is terminated immediately if the SPA port used for the node does notmatch the setting at the ServerNet Switch (X port with an X ServerNet Switch, Y port with aY ServerNet Switch).

The update program tests the link between the SPA and the ServerNet Switch.

• LINK test O.K. is displayed if the link is functioning correctly.• Error: <error message> is displayed if the link is not functioning correctly. The update

program is terminated immediately. If this happens, check the cable connection between thenode and the ServerNet Switch and restart the update program.

Firmware Update Carrying out a firmware update

22 - English A26361-K492-Z121-2-7419

Ê When prompted, enter the name of the file containing the data, e.g. LIT8.hex

The update program updates the firmware of the ServerNet Switch and tests the link once again. This is indicated by the following messages:

Sending data (/)

Waiting for memory to update ...

Waiting for switch reset

Testing the ServerNet link.

Link test O.K.

The message Firmware update successful is displayed to indicate successful completion ofthe update operation.

Ê Once you have performed updating for an X ServerNet-Switch, repeat the same steps for the YServerNet-Switch, if available. To do this, start the firmware update program on the currentnode and select the Y network or find a suitable new node which is connected with aY ServerNet Switch.

Ê Once the firmware update has been correctly performed for both ServerNet Switches, removethe diskette from the drive and restart the node. If the node was connected to theServerNet Switch solely for purposes of the firmware update, do not forget to remove theconnecting cable to the ServerNet Switch.
