WILD AT HEART

Launched in 1914, Cartier’s iconic Panthère

line owes its enduring success to founder Louis

Cartier and jeweller Jeanne Toussaint’s shared

fascination with the power of the panther, in

which they found the inspiration for some of

the celebrated jewellery house’s most beautiful

pieces. It remains one of Cartier’s emblems

today, and after more than a century a piece

of jewellery from the Panthère collection

makes just as strong an impact. In 18-carat

yellow gold, dotted with black lacquer and set

with two tsavorites for eyes, this ring is playful

yet classic, and is a great way to add a little

personality to your look without compromising

on elegance. mkh

VIVA VERSACE

Düsseldorf just got a little more fashion

forward, as Versace has opened its frst

standalone store in the city. Designed by

Donatella Versace in collaboration with British

architect Jamie Fobert, the boutique covers

an area of 540 square metres and is designed

to blend the opulence and traditions of Italy

with the vibrant modernism of Versace today.

Marble mosaic foors pay homage to Byzantine

churches of the ninth century, contrasting

with ultra-modern Perspex walls and shelving

units and combining to create a truly luxurious

atmosphere, bringing a little bit of Italy to

Düsseldorf. With prêt-à-porter collections

of menswear, womenswear and accessories,

this store has the best selection of Versace

goods in Düsseldorf, as well as one of the city’s

most unique design concepts. hl

INVESTMENT PIECES

Uwe van Aferden is described as a

menswear department store, but in fact it’s

much more than that. As well as an impressive

range of menswear, the shop boasts a selection

of art and furniture. In 2012, the company

also created a magazine, The Heritage Post,

dedicated to lifestyle, craft and heritage

fashions. From upcycled furniture to frame-

sewn leather shoes, Uwe van Aferden has a

great range of products that get more beautiful

with age. One example is the leather brand

Butts and Shoulders, stocked since last year.

Made of 100% natural vegetable-tanned

leather, all Butts and Shoulders bags develop a

unique patina when used, touched and exposed

to sunlight. As fashion trends come and go ever

more rapidly, Uwe van Aferden ofers a novel

alternative: investing in something you love

and watching it improve over the years. th

QUALITY TIME

Porsche Design embarks on a new

chapter with the launch of its frst timepieces

developed completely in house. The brand

has had a horological department since 1972,

but until now pieces have been created in

collaboration with renowned watchmakers.

The new models, the Chronograph Titanium

Limited Edition and the Timepiece No1,

are designed using the same principles that

Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche

applied to the very frst Porsche Design watch:

optimal readability, technical perfection,

high-quality materials and true functionality.

They are also exceptionally comfortable

to wear. Limited to 500 pieces each, these

striking matte black pieces are sure to become

collector’s items. hl

DOROTHEE RETURNS TO DÜSSELDORF

Designer womenswear label Dorothee Schumacher, previously known just as Schumacher, was recently rebranded with the full name of its designer and founder to mark the 25th anniversary of its launch, which took place in Düsseldorf. The city’s new fagship store will house the full collection of ready-to-wear clothing and accessories, and provides a relaxed environment designed to feel like a walk-in-wardrobe. Nude, gold and copper tones combine to create a warm and feminine interior while artwork selected by the designer herself adorns the walls to add a personal touch. Plentiful mirrors make mixing and matching outft selections an easy and enjoyable experience. Customers are invited to take time to relax on the sofas in the accessories lounge and enjoy a cofee in the entrance area; this really is a home away from home. glDorothee Schumacher,Trinkausstrasse 7, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 8606 2050,dorothee-schumacher.com

TIMELESS STYLE

Real style never goes out of fashion, as the creative minds behind Italian luxury maison Bulgari truly comprehend. This is why the Bulgari Bulgari line of jewellery remains timeless as it emerges season after season – and why it outlasts many items on the market. Still, it can do no harm to add a little variety, and admirers of this simple and elegant collection can now fnd two new versions of the beautiful reversible ring. Those who love rose gold can now take home a version featuring mother of pearl on one side and pavé diamonds on the other, while the onyx and mother of pearl ring is available in classic yellow gold for the frst time. mkh

DESIGN FOR LIFE

Visitors to Düsseldorf will defnitely

notice a new feature on the city’s skyline:

the architectural triumph that is Kö-Bogen.

A mixed-use development, the building is

home to a wealth of premium fagship stores

belonging to some of the world’s best-loved

brands, from Armani to Zegna. As well as

familiar names, the shopping centre is home

WU’S THE BOSS

Jason Wu’s second outing for Boss is

a confdent assertion of the brand’s new

direction. Having made its name as a

menswear brand famed for its precise tailoring,

Boss is now a strong player in womenswear too.

There is something for every occasion within

this collection. Need a razor-sharp shirtdress

for daytime? Check. Want a diaphanous lilac

gown for a formal event? Double check. Wu

keeps silhouettes streamlined, often with a

narrow belt emphasising the waist. Speaking

of accessories, gladiator sandals are also given

the Wu treatment, with clean lines and a

simple zip bringing them sharply into the 21st

century. Of course, no Boss collection would

be complete without at least one black suit and

Wu does not disappoint. A fawless one-button

afair with white contrast seams, the suit has

been modelled without a shirt to play up the

femininity of a plunging neckline. Here is

androgyny done exactly the right way. th

FRESH START

This season, Prada’s menswear ofering

delivers a masterclass in ‘less is more’.

Designer Miuccia Prada has adopted a

conservative aesthetic, yet with a distinctive

freshness. An emphasis on clean lines,

sharp silhouettes and classic cuts avoids

any suggestion of overcomplication and

provides a fresh twist on contemporary

menswear. Fine tailoring details include

highlighted stitching and razor-sharp trouser

pleats, and the collection also includes cross-

strap sandals and leather overcoats. All these

elements combine into one of the most

German brands are fast becoming synonymous with streetwear

sneakers and leather backpacks. Those looking

for something more directional – and a little

more afordable – are sure to be impressed by

DRMTM (pronounced ‘dream team’). The

label was founded in 2006 and creates cutting-

edge clothing collections for the youthful

non-conformist; its pieces are known for their

bold slogans.

The brand’s latest collection, High Life,

takes its inspiration from the 1990s, an era

that strikes a chord with DRMTM’s brand

Rap music and urban culture in general have been a great influence on DRMTM’s spring/summer 2015 collection

manager Mark Smith. ‘We grew up in the 90s

and there was too much greatness in that era

to put it into one sentence,’ he says. ‘To make

it brief: Wu-Tang Clan, Game Boy, MTV

raps, LA Gear, Michael Jordan, Los Angeles,

Starter and so on.’ Rap music and urban

culture in general has been a great infuence

on DRMTM’s spring/summer 2015 collection;

bucket hats and dark denim feature understated

diamonds and dollar signs while sweaters and

baseball caps are emblazoned with Bel Air as

a tribute to Will Smith’s classic television show,

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

DRMTM is happy to commend its

contemporaries. ‘We are friends with many

of the guys from German and Austrian

streetwear brands like Wemoto and Beastin,’

Smith explains. ‘Inspiration for our collections

comes from diferent sources, though.’ As well

as 1990s American pop culture, DRMTM

owes much of its success to its hometown.

‘Düsseldorf is a great city,’ Smith explains.

‘It’s neither too big nor too small, which means

that you pretty much know all the relevant

people from all kinds of businesses – that’s what

makes Düsseldorf a great place for networking.’

Despite the growing popularity of

streetwear in Düsseldorf, for Smith it could

have come much sooner. ‘Düsseldorf has always

been a fashionable city so it just makes sense.

I think the question is rather “Why so late?”’

DRMTM, which is stocked at Snipes stores, is

now going from strength to strength and Smith

is considering a womenswear range. ‘With

all the corporates around it’s a really tough

environment but we are defnitely thinking

Souq recently celebrated its second anniversary.

The store originally opened as a temporary

pop-up, but co-founders Jojo Koomson

and Maryam Hajji felt Düsseldorf needed a

dedicated streetwear store. ‘The thing is, all

the major cities look alike,’ says Koomson. ‘If

you go to London, Hamburg or Stockholm you

will always fnd the same shops. I think people

are fed up with chain stores. People want to

be more individual and less alike.’

Souq’s covetable collection of trainers

from labels such as Nike SB, Vans and New

stand out from the crowd. The boutique’s

on-line, through blogs, magazines and music

videos and we get a lot of feedback, which is

really import,’ Koomson explains. ‘Because

Düsseldorf is such a fashionable city and a lot

of tourists visit every year we have a really big

community overseas.’

Souq’s online presence is impressively

vast for such a specialist store and the shop

has thousands of followers on Instagram

and Facebook, all keeping up with the latest

launches. But to experience Souq properly,

you have to pay a visit to the store itself.

‘We’ve heard from our customers that the

Lef: La Berlinoise collection by Kaviar Gauche, spring/summer 2015

‘Our collections are based on contradictions. We love women who are chic and feminine yet still have a sense of rebellion.’ The designers behind Kaviar Gauche have been breaking fashion rules since they set up the label in Berlin 10 years ago. In fact, the brand entered the international style world through an act of rebellion, when Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and Johanna Kühl debuted their collection with a guerrilla catwalk show on the street outside Parisian concept store Colette in 2004.

Since then, Kaviar Gauche has shown twice in Paris, as part of the main schedule: its spring/summer 2015 show was ‘successful and sensational,’ say the designers.

‘Showing in Paris is quite diferent to Berlin,’ they add. ‘In Paris, we have to convince an international audience that may have never heard of us before. In Germany, you could ask an unfashionable elderly woman in one of the smaller towns and she would probably know who we are.’

The current Kaviar Gauche collection is a culmination of the designers’ influences and inspirations

It’s true to say that Kaviar Gauche is well-known worldwide and that its typical clientele is far more glamorous than the average German granny. Strong, beautiful and talented women are the target audience for the label, and its fans include Heike Makatsch and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The label’s aesthetic is ‘feminine avant-garde with a modern glamour, combined with elements of rock ’n’ roll’, and the designers say they would love to see Keira Knightly and

52 | F E AT U R E S

Joséphine de la Baume wearing their creations. For spring/summer 2015, the women have

produced a collection that can be seen as a culmination of all the experiences, infuences and inspirations they have shared in the last decade. The collection strikes a perfect balance between masculine and feminine styles: expect feminine silhouettes paired with opulent oversized elements and fowing volume with displaced shapes, executed in a palette of

intense yet soft colours.Inspiration comes from a range of sources

but Berlin is a constant presence in the label’s pieces. ‘Besides the people who infuence our working process and our designs, our beloved city Berlin gives us moments, impressions and ideals which conduct the style of Kaviar Gauche,’ says Kühl. ‘But even so, diferent cities, especially Paris, also deliver moments and ideas which are responsible for our

inspiration.’ The label commemorated its long association with Berlin during its 10th anniversary celebrations, holding a special show in the city: ‘It felt right to do this in Berlin so we were able to invite a lot of people who were believers and supporters from the very frst moment.’

Since graduating in fashion design from Esmod in Paris, Kühl and Fischer-Roehler have become known for the efortlessly chic nature of their work. The label’s name is taken from a French expression. ‘It’s based on “gauche caviar”, which can be translated into Champagne socialist. It pretty much

describes our design and consumer philosophy,’ Fischer-Roehler explains. Kaviar Gauche’s collections often feature an intriguing interplay between textures, transparency and volume, helping to create a look that combines cool seduction with modern glamour. Couture detailing and the incorporation of luxury fabrics add a touch of exclusivity.

The label’s wide recognition within Germany can be attributed to a series of high-profle collaborations. In 2008, Kühl and Fischer-Roehler produced an exclusive collection for the Karstadt group, featuring 1970s-inspired dresses, tunics and blouses; they launched a shoe range for Görtz in 2010 and produced a limited-edition cosmetics bag for natural beauty company Dr Hauschka.

A shared understanding forms the basis of any partnership: ‘It just needs to be a ft. The other company needs to be convinced

by our aesthetic. Otherwise it will not work,’ the designers explain. ‘Of course it is still a co-operation and you cannot ignore the partners’ wishes, but they have to trust us. The projects that have been based on these principles were very successful.’

Collaboration is something Kühl and Fischer-Roehler excel at, having worked together for 10 years with minimal creative

diferences. ‘Of course, sometimes we have diferent opinions, but it is quite rare as we trust each other.’

The infuence of two creative minds may account for the duality that has become a trademark of the label; the spring/summer 2015 collection plays with contrasts, pairing casual drapery with strong geometric shapes to great efect.

It’s a winning formula and the label shows no sign of a loss of momentum after reaching its 10th anniversary. ‘We are planning to expand on the international market,’ the designers confde. ‘Licence deals are being sorted out right now and we are planning to open more mono-label stores; our stores have been very successful.’

It seems that Germany’s fashion rebels are becoming respected members of the global style community kaviargauche.com

When it comes to drinks, Düsseldorf is known

frst and foremost for altbier, a top-fermented,

copper-coloured ale. Unsurprisingly, there are

plenty of breweries in the city, many of which

date back hundreds of years, where visitors can

sample the local tipple, which is clean-tasting

and aromatic, with a creamy head. ‘Alt’ in the

name translates into English as ‘old’ – altbier is

one of only a handful of traditional German ales

and is among the world’s oldest beer styles. It

is so closely identifed with Düsseldorf that it’s

also known as Düsseldorfer Alt.

Those who prefer something stronger

may also be interested in another Düsseldorf

tradition; Killepitsch, the local liqueur, is a

heady concoction made from 98 types of herbs,

The city is also home to many elegant

bars where excellent cocktails and a great

atmosphere are the order of the day. So, whether

it’s an occasion for celebration or just for a quiet

drink, pull up a seat at one of Düsseldorf’s

historic breweries or bustling bars and get a real

1. Hofgarten

Reputed to be Germany’s first-established public park,

Hofgarten is popular with those looking for a quiet moment

away from the bustle of the city. Its extensive meadows

make an ideal venue for an al fresco bite to eat.

2. Nordpark

The Nordpark combines spectacular fountains, a Japanese

garden and an aqua zoo. Don’t miss the lily gardens or the

impressive landscaped flowerbeds.

3. Südpark

The Südpark is Düsseldorf’s biggest park, meaning there’s

plenty of opportunity to find your perfect spot. Take a stroll

along one of the many picturesque paths and enjoy the

varying horticulture of these much-loved gardens.

BUCHERER

Heritage watchmaker H Moser & Cie and

fne jeweller Bucherer have a lot in common.

These independent companies from

German-speaking areas of Switzerland

were founded in the 19th century and

so it is natural that they are long-time

collaborators. Their most recent project –

an addition to the existing Venturer line

– is the Venturer Small Seconds Bucherer

Edition. In white gold and with a 1960s

convex design, the watch is inspired by

H Moser & Cie’s historic pocket watches.

Be sure to seek out this watch while in

Düsseldorf, as it is exclusively available

in Bucherer boutiques in Germany,

Switzerland and Austria.

Bucherer,

Königsallee 26,

40212 Düsseldorf,

+49 (0)211 328083,

WEMPE

Wempe is on a mission to keep watch

lovers happy with the latest addition to

its Zeitmeister line. The new fagship style,

the Wempe Zeitmeister Glashütte i/SA

Chronograph Mondphase Vollkalender,

combines two of the most popular

horological features of previous styles, a

chronograph and a full calendar including

moon phase rank to chart the lunar cycle.

Other highlights include a 24-hour display

and a pleasingly practical date display made

up of a circle of dates that surrounds the

dial. Once completed, each timepiece must

undergo a rigorous 15-day testing procedure

and is only approved if it reaches Wempe’s

exacting standards.

MY NEIGHBOURHOOD: ANDREJ UROŠEVIĆ

Andrej Urošević is the man behind Andrej’s Oyster Bar & Restaurant, which serves some of the best fsh and seafood in Düsseldorf, delivered fresh every morning. He shares his favourites from the city’s Oberkassel and Niederkassel districts with Isabella Redmond Styles

‘You’re most likely to fnd me in Oberkassel and Niederkassel. It’s my favourite area of the city as it’s the most picturesque and it’s also where I live and where I grew up.

‘For food, I love to visit the Dorfstube

restaurant as it’s the most authentic and best German restaurant in town, as well as the buzzing Brasserie Hülsmann

and Stollmann, a butcher and delicatessen that’s defnitely best.

‘When it comes to fashion, Gretchen, which is known for its handbags and leather

accessories, is one of Germany’s most exciting young fashion labels.

‘I spend most of my time at my restaurant – I’m practically married to it. However on a rare night of, I like to visit the Capella Bar & Cigar Lounge * p.74 at the Breidenbacher hotel, because it has the best selection of fne cognacs, armagnacs and cocktails in town. The wine list is also huge and the kitchen is open until late, which is very convenient for me after we close.

‘When I have friends to visit, I like

to take them on a stroll about Oberkassel and Niederkassel, then head across the bridge to the Old Town where we make our way to the famous Königsallee, Düsseldorf’s most fashionable street. Then it’s on to the MedienHafen, via Carlstadt, a gentrifed part of the Old Town, through the park and along the pond by the Ständehaus

museum. The television tower is a must-see. The view from the top of it is my favourite in the city – go up there and you will understand why.

I love to walk along the river banks of Oberkassel and Niederkassel and go fshing down by the river Rhine. It’s very relaxing and fsh doesn’t get much fresher than that. That is, if I manage to catch one!

‘The orangery and the adjacent park in Carlstadt are hidden gems that I’d quite like to keep to myself.

‘I’ve also just discovered our local bakery and cheese shop Le Salonard on Luegallee. It’s where we source our cheese for the restaurant.’

42: Take It To The Streets

Загляните в наш магазин и судите сами». michalsky.com, mcmworldwide.com, drmtm.com, souq-store.com

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)

Smith

Snipes

Maryam Hajji

Koomson

Kaviar

Gauche

Alexandra

Keira

Fischer-
