    IR-Helikopter Rex-X Nano RtF

    Best.-Nr: 20 66 66

Important Information Version 04/10IR Rex-X Nano Helicopter RtF

    Item-Nr: 20 66 66

Dear Customers,The Rex-X Nano helicopter is operated with an infra-red light remote control. The

transmission range is approximately 8 meters, which is adequate for indoor opera-tion. However, sunlight or light from fluorescent tubes falling on it directly can in

principle, lead to a reduction of the transmission range or to faults.

Further, Channel balancing is described in Chapter 10 d) of the operating instructions

manual. Correct is: The blue LED described in this Section should go off after

successful channel balancing, and it should flash when the helicopter is in flight.

We thank you for your attention to this matter.

    Zeer geachte klant,

    a) Auswechseln der Rotorbltter

    2. Intended UseThis product is an electrically powered model helicopter which is controlled by infrared signals using the remote

control unit included in the delivery. The model is intended for indoor use only. The model helicopter is pre-assembled

and ready to fly and is delivered with built-in remote control and drive components. The product must not become damp or wet.

The product is not suitable for children under 14 years of age.

Observe all safety notes in these operating instructions. They contain important information regarding the

    handling of the product.

You alone are responsible for the safe operation of the model!

    3. Product DescriptionThe double rotor IR electric helicopter Rex-X Nano is equipped with two counter-rotating main rotors and is ready to

fly. Thus, there is no torque around the yaw axis and the model does not need a tail rotor for lateral stability. The upper

main rotor has rotor blades with a fixed angle of attack and a swivelling joint that can be stabilised using a turning

centrifugal weight. The lower rotor also has a fixed angle of attack and is not controlled or stabilised.

Lifting and lowering the model is effected via a common modification of the number of revolutions of both main rotor

blades. Steering around the yaw axis is effected by means of different revolutions of the two main rotors. Additionally,

the helicopter has a horizontally attached tail propeller to tilt the model forwards or backwards in hover flight to makeit possible to fly forwards or backwards.

For operation, 6 mignon batteries (e.g. Conrad item no.: 652506, please order 6x) are required.

Please use batteries only instead of rechargeable batteries for operating the IR transmitter.

    7. Notes on Batteries and Rechargeable BatteriesDespite the fact that handling batteries and rechargeable batteries in daily life nowadays is a matter of fact,

there are still numerous dangers and problems involved.

Ensure that you observe the following general information and safety measures when handling batteriesand rechargeable batteries.

Keep batteries/rechargeable batteries out of the reach of children.

Do not leave any batteries/rechargeable batteries lying around openly. There is a risk of batteries being swallowed

by children or pets. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately!

Batteries/rechargeable batteries must never be short-circuited, disassembled or thrown into fire. There is a danger

    of explosion!

Leaking or damaged batteries/rechargeable batteries may cause acid burns when coming into contact with skin.

    Use suitable protective gloves.

Do not recharge normal batteries. There is a risk of fire and explosion! Only charge rechargeable batteries intendedfor this purpose. Use suitable battery chargers. Batteries (1.5V) are meant to be used once only and must be

    properly disposed of when empty.

Please observe the correct polarity when inserting batteries or connecting the charger (observe positive/+ and

negative/-). Wrong polarity may damage the transmitter, the airplane and the rechargeable batteries. There also is a

    risk of fire and explosion.

Always replace the whole set of batteries. Do not mix full batteries with half-full ones. Always use batteries/recharge-

able batteries of the same type and manufacturer.

Never mix batteries and rechargeable batteries! Therefore, only use batteries for the remote control transmitter.

If the device is not used for a longer period of time (e.g. storage), take out the inserted batteries of the remote controlto avoid damage from leaking batteries.

    Attention!

Switch off the helicopter after flight. Do not leave the helicopter switched on when you do not use it (e.g.

during transport or storage). Otherwise, the flight battery may be fully discharged and is thus destroyed/

    unusable!

Never charge the enclosed flight battery immediately after use. Always let the flight battery to cool down in the

helicopter until it has reached room or ambient temperature again.

Only charge intact and undamaged batteries. If the external insulation of the rechargeable battery is damaged or if

the rechargeable battery is deformed or bloated, it must not be charged. In this case, there is immediate danger offire and explosion!

Never damage the flight battery covering, do not cut the foil cover, do not probe the rechargeable battery with sharp

objects. There is a risk of fire and explosion!

Never recharge the flight accumulator in the helicopter unattended.

Disconnect the helicopter from the charger (remote control transmitter/USB cable) when it is fully charged.

    9. Setting up the TransmitterIn the operating instructions, the numbers in the text always refer to the figure opposite or the figures within

the section. Cross-references to other figures will be indicated by the corresponding figure number.

    a) Inserting the batteries

The power supply of the transmitter requires 6 mignon

batteries (e.g. Conrad Item No.: 652506, please order

    6x).

Proceed as follows to insert the batteries:

Remove the screw from the battery compartment lid

    (1) at the back of the transmitter and remove the bat-

tery compartment lid (2).Insert the batteries observing the correct polarity ac-

cording to the note in the battery compartment (3).

Then attach the battery casing lid and screw it back

    on.

    29

    b) Switching on the Transmitter

Slide the function switch (see figure 1, item 2) from the

left position OFF to the right position ON.

The Power LED (1) and four LEDs in the upper area of

the LED display ring (2) are lit.

If you move the control lever for the pitch function (see

figure 1, item 8) upwards, the 3 LEDs in the lower left

of the LED display ring (3) will start to flash.

When the control lever for the pitch function is back in

the lower position, the four LEDs in the upper area of

the LED display ring (2) will go out, and the three LEDs

in the lower left of the LED display ring (3) are lit con-

    tinuously.

The transmitter is now ready for operation.

If the control lever for the pitch function is now pushed

all the way to the top again, all LEDs of the LED dis-

play ring will light up depending on the control lever

    position.

    Attention!

If the 3 LEDs in the lower left of the LED display ring start to flash during operation, the inserted batteries

are weak and must be replaced.

    Figure 3

    30

    c) Operation of the IR Transmitter

Hold the IR transmitter in both hands and operate the two control levers with your thumbs. It is important that your IR

transmitter diodes are always targeted at the model to achieve best signal transfer.

    10. Operation of the Model Helicoptera) Charging the Helicopter Battery

The flight battery in the helicopter can be recharged via the transmitter or the included USB charging cable.

    Charging via transmitter:

Ensure that remote control and helicopter are switchedoff (also see section Switching on the Helicopter).

Slide the charging cable duct cover (see figure 1, item

    6) open downwards and remove the charging cable

    (1) from the transmitter.

Connect the plug connector (2), which is protected

against polarity reversal, to the charging socket (3) of

    the helicopter.

Then switch on the transmitter. The charger LED (see

fig. 1, item 9) and the power LED (see fig. 1, item 3) will

    light up.

When the charger LED goes out, the charging process

is completed and the charging cable can be removed

from the helicopter and replaced in the transmitter.

If you want to charge the helicopters re-

    chargeable battery through the transmitter,

the transmitter must not hold any recharge-

    able batteries.

The rechargeable battery of the helicopter

cannot be charged due to the too low volt-age in the transmitter (batteries= 1.5V/cell,

    rechargeable batteries = 1.2V/cell)!

    Figure 4

  • 8/8/2019 Small helicopter manual

    32/81

    31

    Charging via USB cable:

To avoid unnecessary strain on the batteries in the

transmitter, you may also charge the helicopters flight

battery using the included USB cable.

Connect the plug connector of the USB charging cable

to the helicopter.Connect the USB plug (2) of the charging cable to a

free USB port of your computer.

If the red control LED (3) for the charger electronics in

the USB plug lights up, the charging process is com-

pleted and the charging cable can be removed from

    the helicopter and computer.

For photo-technical reasons, the USB charging cable is illustrated in the wound-up state. Before first use,

the cable retainer should be opened and the cable unwound.

Do not connect the charging cable to a USB hub without a separate power unit (e.g. a keyboard USB port,

etc.), because these will not provide sufficient current for charging.

The operating system does not recognize any new hardware after connection, because the USB port is

    only used for power supply.

Please observe that the USB ports of your computer/notebook are usually only active when the computer/

    notebook is switched on.

Therefore, we recommend to only connect the charging cable to a computer/notebook that is switched on.

    Figure 5

  • 8/8/2019 Small helicopter manual

    33/81

    32

    b) Checking the Rotor Blade Retainer

To allow the four main rotor blades (1) to automatically

orient themselves at a 180 angle to each other during

flight, the blade retainer screws (2) reaching into the

blade retainers from below must not be tightened too

firmly. If you pitch the model helicopter to the side by 90, the

rotor blades must be able to fold downwards on their

own as illustrated in the figure.

    Attention!

Do not loosen the fastening screws too

much; if you do, the tracking of the rotor

blades will no longer correspond, and the

blade tips will run at different heights.

    Caution!

Use the included screwdrivers for tighten-

ing screws and ensure that you do not use

excessive force. The threads or the screw

    material may be damaged otherwise.

    c) Checking the Centrifugal Weight

The centrifugal weight (1) must be easily movable, just

    like the main rotor blades.

Manually move the centrifugal weight up and down on

one side (see arrows in figure 7) and ensure that the

two attached ball joints (2) can be moved easily.

The mechanics must run smoothly, but should not haveany play in their bearings.

    Figure 6

    Figure 7

  • 8/8/2019 Small helicopter manual

    34/81

    33

    d) Switching the Helicopter on

Slide the channel selection switch (see figure 1, item 10) into the desired position (A, B or C). For the concurrent

operation of up to three models in one room, each helicopter must use a different channel. Only this prevents them

from being affected by the wrong remote control.

    Switch on the transmitter first.

Slide the control lever for the pitch function (see figure 1, item 8) all the way up and let it return to the lower position.

Slide the helicopter function switch (see figure 4, item 4) from the front position OFF to the rear position ON.

The helicopter electronics now performs internal gyro attunement for approx. 5 seconds and learns the transmitter

control signals. During this time, a blue LED (1) flashes on the electronics board behind the function switch.

When attunement is completed, the blue LED (1) is lit

permanently and the helicopter is ready for operation.

The alternatingly flashing LEDs to the right and left of

the cabin cowling (2) serve purely optical purposes on

    the helicopter.

During the attunement process, the model helicopter must not be turned or moved, and no other IR remotecontrol transmitter should be operated in direct proximity of the model.

    Important information!

Before starting to fly your model helicopter, you should take note of the following information first.

    Figure 8

  • 8/8/2019 Small helicopter manual

    35/81

    34

    e) Basic Information Relevant to the Control of Model Helicopters

Before you fly your model, you should first familiarize yourself with the control possibilities open to you and thereby be

able to fly safely. The indoor helicopter is controlled with the aid of the two control sticks on the transmitter. The

    following functions are available:

Pitch FunctionWith the pitch function you can control the flying height of the helicopter (see figure 9). For control, the left control lever

(also see figure 1, item 8) is used. It can be moved upwards from the lower position, into which it returns due to a

spring. Since the angles of attack of the rotor blades are not modifiable, setting the flying height is effected via a

common speed modification of the two rotors.

If the control lever is in the lower position, the motors and the rotors stop. If you push the control lever upwards, the

rotors start up and increase their speed according to the position of the lever. When the control lever reaches the

centre position, the helicopter should hover.

    Figure 9

    Tail Function

As the helicopter is equipped with two counter-rotating rotors, there is no torque around the yaw axis (rotor shaft). The

helicopter does not need a functional tail rotor for lateral stabilization. To allow the model to turn around the yaw axis

(rotor shaft), the two main rotors run at slightly different speeds and the model begins to turn (see figure 10). The tail

function is controlled with the right control lever (see figure 1, item 5). If the lever is pushed slightly towards the left, the

tip of the fuselage turns towards the left. If you steer towards the right, the tip of the fuselage turns likewise towards the

    right.

    Figure 10

  • 8/8/2019 Small helicopter manual

    36/81

    35

    Nod Function

The nod function allows you to move your model helicopter forwards and backwards (see figure 11). For this, the

helicopter tail is equipped with an electric motor and a horizontal propeller. Depending on the rotational direction of the

tail propeller, the helicopter tail is pushed upwards or downwards. In hover flight, with the helicopter standing horizon-

tally, the tail propeller is not running.

This is also controlled with the right control lever (also see figure 1, item 5). If you press the lever slightly forward, thetail rises and the model flies forwards. If you pull the lever towards the back, the tail drops and the model flies back-

    wards.

    Figure 11

    f) Practical Flight Advice for the First Start

Even though the model can fly in the narrowest of spaces, for the first test flights we recommend using a free space

    of about 3 x 3 m.

The support should be flat (tiles, parquet flooring, or similar) to allow you to determine even before take-off if the

model tends to drift off in a particular direction.

Place yourself exactly behind your helicopter. As long as you can see your model from behind, it will react to the

control commands: right, left, forward, backward exactly as you see it. Whereas, if the cockpit of the model points

towards you, it reacts exactly the opposite way from your steering commands at the transmitter.

    g) Trimming the Helicopter

Push the pitch lever (see figure 1, Item 8) carefully forward and observe the response of your model. Shortly before the

helicopter starts hovering, you can already determine in which direction your model wants to move.

If the helicopter fuselage tip tries to turn to the right, reduce the speed and turn the trim wheel for the tail function (see

figure 1, item 4) gradually downwards.

Push the pitch lever carefully forward and check if the adjustment was sufficient. Keep repeating this procedure until

the helicopter no longer has any tendency to turn to the right.

If the fuselage tip turns to the left, carry out a trim adjustment upwards.

    11. Maintenance and CareClean the exterior of the model and the remote control only with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Never use abrasive cleaning

agents or chemical solutions as these could damage the surfaces of the casings.

    a) Replacing the Rotor Blades

Observe the rotational direction of the rotor when re-

    placing the main rotor blades.

The rotor blades of the upper rotor are marked A, the

rotor blades of the lower one B.

Do not overtighten the fastening screws of the rotor

blade retainers (also see figure 6).

    b) Replacing the Tail Propeller

If required, the tail propeller (1) can simply be pulled

off of the motor shaft upwards manually.

When putting on the replacement propeller, ensure thatthe propeller is not skewed which would bend the mo-

    tor shaft.

Regularly check all screw connections of your helicopter for tight fit. All moving parts have to be easily movable but

there should not be a clearance in the bearing.

When replacing mechanical parts use only original spares available from the manufacturer.

The spare parts list is located on our Internet page www.conrad.com in the download section to the respective product.

You can also order the replacement parts list by phone. For contact information, please refer to chapter 1. Introduc-

tion at the beginning of these operating instructions.

geur.
