General Informa on From the desk of Father Barnes Are you looking for something more, for a be er way to live, now is the me! I feel like I am wri ng a self-help book! On a serious note, it can happen that our faith gets buried while the many tasks of life create a whirlwind of busyness. What if we were to flip that on its head and say that all of those tasks run the risk of being empty if we do not start with faith, making God number one on the priority list. Then proper perspec ve is given to the to-do list. Actually, when we take me out for our faith life and for prayer and for Mass every Sun-day, the to-do list goes much be er! But what does it take to realize this? It takes the faith to try it and the perseverance to s ck with prayer every day and Mass every Sun-day. If our faith life has been buried and we have been spiritually asleep for too long, Christ invites us to rise from the spiritual tomb. He rose from the dead for you and for me so that we can rise from spiritual sleep and from darkness. Last night….in the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, we saw how at the outset there was total darkness inside the church, this being the image of the profound darkness in which hu-manity was plunged without Christ, without the revela on of God …. And from the light of the Easter candle, symbolizing Christ, all the faithful received the light: the darkened church was now illuminated with the light of the Easter candle and the candles of all the faithful. It is the light the Church lets flood over the earth, submerged as it was in dark-ness (In Conversa on with God. Scepter. P. 315). Hence brothers and sisters, united with Christ our Light, we are transformed and become a light in the church and a light in the world. But if we bury the light God has given us, the Church and the world are that much darker, so not only is our life darker and emp -er, but the church and world as well. The pews so full on Easter but o en so empty the rest of the year weaken not only those who are absent, but the rest of the believing community as well. We need God first, but we also need each other and the witness of faith given by others. The good news is that Jesus Christ is risen indeed and He invites all of us to rise from sin to new life, to be a light through our union with Him. So if you are looking for a be er way to live, for something more, now is the me to make the decision to put Christ at the top of the priority list and keep Him there! God bless, Fr. Barnes

LNMV Religious Educa on: Classes held at the Catholic Educa on Center (CEC) home of Holy Cross Catholic School

Easter Break: No classes on Wednesday, March 30 Classes will resume: Wednesday, April 6 6:30 – 7:45pm First Communion Student Morning Workshop: 9:30am-11:00am April 2, 2016 This is a mandatory workshop for all our First Communion students. Students and parents will have a tour of the sanctuary & sacristy; they will also learn how to receive the Eucharist and lastly make their pew markers in the basement. This will be held at your parish church. Confirma on: Interviews for Confirma on students in Year 2 (10th Grade) will begin April 6 and con nue throughout April. Our 10th graders will be con-firmed at the Cathedral in St. Paul on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. R.C.I.A. Each year on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil, many are bap zed into the Catholic Church and join the bap zed seeking full communion with the Church. Parishes welcome these new Catholics through the Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults (RCIA). This year we welcome and congratulate Avery Ulmen who celebrated the Sacraments of Ini a on (Bap sm, Confirma on and First Eucha-rist) and Victoria Wenner and Jus n Keil who were welcomed into full communion. They have been part of the RCIA forma on class since September. Please support them in your prayers as a new member of the Catholic Church and our parish community. Our RCIA faith for-ma on classes will con nue into the period known as mystagogy, which means “interpreta on of mystery”, or “to lead through the mys-teries”. Mystagogy is the me of post-bap smal catechesis and a me to reflect on receiving the sacraments as well as ongoing forma on of the faith. The newly bap zed are called “neophytes,” from the Greek word meaning “new plant,” because the faith has been newly planted in them. As the formal catechesis draws to a close in the month of April, there is s ll much to learn as our spiritual life is a life-long faith journey. This is true for all of us as God calls us to grow in holiness and par cipa on in the life of the Church, which can help us to evangelize. This is a me to plant the seeds of faith in our work environments, in our families and community and invite others to consider the Catholic Church. May the seeds you plant grow into many “new plants” at future Easter Vigils! Q & A A er a ending the Easter Vigil for a friend's bap-sm, I was struck by the Litany of Saints. I was impressed by

the list and was wondering: why do we pray the Litany? The chan ng of the Litany has always been one of my favor-ite moments of the Rite of Bap sm. The Litany reminds us of the long history of faith that is the real fabric of our church. And if you know the story of just a few of those saints' lives, you get a feel for the struggle and the courage and the faith that comes down to us through the ages and is actually the founda on of our own faith. The saints are models of fidelity to the Gospel, of determi-na on and of faith, hope and love. We are part of that com-munity of faith and by chan ng the Litany we make the memory of the saints present. It is the church universal and the church of all ages in which we are bap zed. With that same church we share in the Eucharist and we are the body of Christ. Each of us takes our place within the church and carries on the mission and work of Jesus in community with all the faithful: past, present and future. The Litany is but a sampling of the great men and women whose holiness and faith is our heritage. Chant proudly! Liturgical Publica ons, Inc.

Everyday Stewardship I had been offering a seminar for a group of pastoral leaders from several churches and we were talking about parish brand-ing. More and more these days parishes have created a brand or logo that represents who they are as a community. Some mes the image depicts something from their grounds or inside their church. Other mes the image includes a slogan or a statement of a milestone the parish community has reached. We were talking about what might make a good logo for their individual communi es when an older gentleman spoke up and expressed what he thought should be on every Catholic Church logo: a crucifix. He said that image speaks to who we are as Catholics. He lamented that too many Catholic parishes that he has visited use a basic cross in their branding imagery and to him that was ignoring who we are as Catholics. Even though we did not all agree that a crucifix could or should be on every parish logo, everyone did pause for a moment and think about his point. Most Protestant communi es have removed the corpus from the crosses they use in worship and other church spaces. I have heard many mes over the years from non-Catholic friends that Jesus is now risen from the dead and there is no need to depict him dead on a cross. Also, some will refer to their understanding of a biblical prohibi on of graven images. Many just do not get why it means so much to us. Does it mean so much to us? Does it mean that much to you? For many good stewards the crucifix serves as an example of the ul mate sacrifice of love for another; a sacrifice for you. Catho-lics do not diminish Easter by emphasizing the Crucifixion. And the Jesus we follow, even though risen from the grave, bears those wounds of love to this day. So tell me: what does that crucifix mean to you? Liturgical Publica ons, Inc.

Would you and your family like to bring up the Gi s to Father Barnes during Mass?

What an honor it is to carry the wine and hosts to the priest at Mass for consecra on! Any occa-sion can be a me to serve as a Gi Bearer: a birthday, an anniversary, or just a "happy day." Or maybe you would like to bring up the gi s on the memorial of a loved one.

Gi Bearers ac vely par cipate in the celebra on of the Mass by presen ng the gi s of Bread and Wine at the altar and require no special skill or permanent ministerial duty, and yet it is a beau ful and significant part of the Mass performed by lay people. We have a sign-up book in the back of church where you can register you or your family.

No Need to Pledge?

The story is told of a wise pastor who went to get a hair cut. The barber, who also happened to be a parishioner, took the opportunity to tell the pastor all the reasons why the barber was not going to complete his stewardship pledge card.

“I don’t think we should have to promise to give money to God. We should give what our heart tells us at the me. I like to be able to just put in the collec on whatever I have that week.”

The pastor listened carefully and a er his haircut he handed the barber $1 for the $10 haircut, saying, “I like to give what my heart tells me – just whatever I have in my pocket at the

me.”

“Father,” the barber protested, “I can’t pay my rent, take care of my expenses and run my business successfully if everyone would do that.”

“Neither can God,” the pastor replied.

If you have not yet completed your form, please do so. There are forms in the back of church along with a box to deposit your forms. You may also complete your Stewardship form on our parish website.

It is very important that we hear from all of our families so that we may strengthen and grow our ministries here at St. Nicho-las. The Stewardship Commi ee will be following up with all families who do not turn in their forms so please do take me to do this today.
