The fortress is the landmark of the city of Mozart and also the largest completely preserved citadel in Central Europe. Tours of the medieval State Rooms (including the Golden Hall), the romantic courtyards and various museums (such as the Fortress Museum) are strongly recommended. Since 1892, Fortress Hohensalzburg has been easily accessible from the Festungs- gasse using Austria’s oldest Cable Railway . www.salzburg-burgen.at St. Peter‘s Cemetery St. Peter‘s Cemetery is one of the oldest and most enchanting cemeteries in the world. It serves as the final resting place for many notable personalities, artists, scholars and merchants including Santino Solari (architect and builder of Salzburg Cathedral), Nannerl Mozart (Mozart’s sister), Michael Haydn (composer and brother of Joseph Haydn). The early Christian Catacombs hewn out of the rock face of the Mönchsberg are a special attraction, as are the monastery church, bakery and vaults. St. Peter’s Abbey is believed to be the oldest monastery in the German speaking regions. www.stift-stpeter.at Salzburg Cathedral Probably the city’s most significant and most monumental example of sacral architecture is also a focus of religious activity. This impressive northern alpine early baroque building features a magnificent façade and a splendorous dome. Its origins are closely linked with the growth and development of this spiritual principality. Destroyed, rebuilt and expanded due to fires, it is a tribute to the power and independence of Salzburg’s archbishops. Sights worth seeing: The Cathedral Museum and the Excavations Museum. www.salzburger-dom.at Residenz The magnificent archiepiscopal residential palace served as the seat of Salzburg‘s prince-archbishops from 1120 onwards. The impressive early baroque building acquired its present-day appearance at the end of the 16 th century. Open for public viewing, the State Rooms were the entertaining rooms and apartments of Salzburg‘s prince archbishops, and feature several priceless frescos, paintings, tiled ovens, as well as the Residenz Gallery – which showcases European art of the 16 th to the 19 th centuries. At the heart of square there is the Residenz Fountain, the largest baroque fountain north of the Alps. www.residenzgalerie.at Mozart Square Mozart Square is dominated by the statue of Mozart, designed by Ludwig von Schwanthaler and ceremonially unveiled in 1842 in the presence of Mozart‘s sons. Mozart‘s widow, Constanze von Nissen, did not live to see the unveiling. Excavations uncovered a precious Roman mosaic floor with the inscription: ‘hic habitat (felicitas), nihil intret mali’ (here dwells happiness, may no evil enter). The poet Georg Trakl was born in the ‘Schaffner House’ on the adjoining Waagplatz. St. Michael’s Church stands in the westernmost corner of the square and is the oldest intact church in the city. Salzburg Museum The museum for art and art history is housed in the magnificently renovated New Residenz on Mozart Square. Here valuable objects of art, aesthetic presentations, interesting facts and multimedia installations all blend into a homogeneous whole. The Panorama Museum is located right next door and features a unique panoramic painting (circumference = 26m) by Johann Michael Sattler. It shows the city of Salzburg and its environs around 1829 and every day it is also the gathering point for tours taking in Salzburg’s world-famous sounding of the Carillon from the archiepiscopal palace. www.salzburgmuseum.at Museum of Modern Art One museum – two buildings. Salzburg‘s Museum of Modern Art consists of two buildings in two spectacular locations: The Rupertinum is situated in the old part of town and is a baroque city palace built by the archbishops in close proximity to the Festival Hall and the cathedral. It has been adapted for the purposes of presenting modern art. The museum on the Mönchsberg enjoys a prominent position overlooking the old city and its new, modern architecture was custom-built for housing large-scale exhibitions and collections in an international context. www.museumdermoderne.at Collegiate Church Fischer von Erlach‘s masterpiece is one of Europe‘s most important sacred buildings and represents a synthesis of the major architectural systems. Building commenced in 1696 and the church was consecrated in 1707. Salzburg residents and visitors meet in front of the church on weekdays at the so-called ‘Green Market’, a colourful market offering fresh produces, flowers and traditional crafts from different regions in the province of Salzburg. www.kollegienkirche.at Mozart‘s Birthplace Leopold Mozart and his family lived in the building at no. 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on January 27 th , 1756. Today Mozart‘s birthplace is a museum. Famous exhibits include the violin Mozart played as a child, his clavichord, portraits of the Mozart family, their correspondence and original items of furniture. The ‘Getreidegasse’ boasts elaborate guild signs, ornate portals and idyllic arcades, and lies at the heart of Austria‘s most beautiful ‘shopping centre’. www.mozarteum.at The Festival Halls The main venue for the annual Salzburg festival. This complex includes the Large Festival Hall – designed according to plans drafted by Clemens Holzmeister and one of the largest halls in the world; the House for Mozart – previously the smaller festival hall; and the Rocky Riding School venue – originally built in the side of the mountain in 1606-1607 by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich as a summer riding school and stables. From 1925 parts were opened for use by the Salzburg Festival. Standing opposite there is the University founded in 1622. This features the newly renovated Large Lecture Hall ; an authentic venue for performances of Mozart’s works and one of the most famous concert halls in the world. www.salzburgerfestspiele.at Mirabell Palace The palace was a gift contracted by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in honour of Salome Alt. Today the palace houses the offices of the city authorities. The ‘Angel Staircase’ leads up to the Marble Hall, previously used for representative functions, and where Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl often played. Today it is considered one of ’the most beautiful wedding halls in the world’. The Mirabell Gardens also feature numerous enchanting attractions, such as the fountain, the amusing ‘Gnome Garden’, wonderfully arranged flowerbeds, a maze and the ‘Hedge Theatre’. www.stadt-salzburg.at Mozart’s Residence The first documentary record of the house at no. 8 Makartplatz appeared in 1617. W. A. Mozart lived here from 1773 to 1781. The rooms of the former Mozart family home on the first floor now house a museum dedicated to the history of the house and Mozart’s family. Original fortepiano. The Holy Trinity Church ‘Dreifaltigkeits- kirche’ further up the square is the most important example of sacred architecture on the right bank of the old city and was the first architectural creation from the feather of the great baroque master builder, Fischer von Erlach. www.mozarteum.at Linzer Gasse The ancient Linzer Gasse begins at the ‘Platzl’ by the ‘Staatsbrücke’ and runs along the foot of the Kapuzinerberg offering both shade and protection. It has not lost any of its hustle and bustle over the centuries and is still one of Salzburg‘s most popular shopping streets. Stefan Zweig Weg winds its way up the Kapuzinerberg beginning at no.14 Linzer Gasse, past six Stations of the Cross, through the Felix Gate to the Capuchin Monastery established in 1599. The diversity of fauna and flora is still evident on the Kapuzinerberg thanks to the untouched nature and closeness of the woods offering countless paths and wonderful views of the city of Salzburg. St. Sebastian The history of St. Sebastian‘s Church dates back to Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach who had the church built from 1505 to 1512. The church is adjoined by St. Sebastian‘s Cemetery, designed around 1600 in the style of an Italian campo santo. It is the final resting place of Mozart’s father, Leopold, Mozart’s wife, Constanze, her second husband, Georg Nikolaus von Nissen and the ‘father’ of modern medicine, Paracelsus. The most magnificent grave of all, the chapel of Gabriel, is the mausoleum of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. Hellbrunn In 1612 Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus ordered master cathedral builder Santino Solari to build what is to this day one of the most splendid examples of renaissance architecture on the northern side of the Alps – the summer residence palace in Hellbrunn and its spacious park. The world famous trick fountains, mysterious and mystical grottos, figures animated by water and hidden jets all around the palace, are enjoyed just as much today as they were back then by the Archbishop and his guests. The ‘Monatsschlösschen’ villa is now home to the Folklore Museum. www.hellbrunn.at Salzburg Zoo Salzburg Zoo is situated at the southern end of Salzburg in the immediate vicinity of Hellbrunn Palace. The Zoo houses around 800 wild animals and 140 species from all over the world on a 14 hectare landscape in an authentic and generously sized natural open air environment. The zoo’s unique topology offers a sheer rock face on one side and leads down in various places to the woods and flood plain below where both domestic and exotic animals bask and play, from the Alpine ibex through to the banded mongoose. There’s also a section where children can pet and stroke animals such as ‘woolly pigs’, peacock goats and other such creatures. www.salzburg-zoo.at Salzburg Foundation art projects The Salzburg Foundation is a private initiative active in encouraging the display of art in public areas. Every year since 2002 a well- established international contemporary artist has been selected to provide works for a project in the city of Salzburg. Previous artists include Anselm Kiefer (2002), Mario Merz (2003), Marina Abramovic (2004), Markus Lüpertz (2005), James Turrell (2006), Stephan Balkenhol (2007), Tony Cragg (2008), Christian Boltanski (2009) and Jaume Plensa (2010). In 2011 the project will be rounded off with a display of the works of three Austrian artists – Brigitte Kowanz, Manfred Wakolbinger and Erwin Wurm. www.salzburgfoundation.at Stiegl Brauwelt in Salzburg – Europe’s largest ‘Adventure Brewery‘ Austria’s largest privately owned brewery has been brewing beer in Salzburg since 1492. Top quality and a love of tradition have always been close to their hearts. Beer enthusiasts can discover a whole range of facts, figures and fascinating background information among the 5000m² of the Stiegl world of brewing. When was beer first brewed? Which nation drinks the most beer? Answers to these beer-related questions and lots more besides can be found at the Stiegl Brauwelt centre – Europe’s largest beer and brewery exhibition. A beer tasting session featuring several Stiegl beers is included in the museum admission fee. www.brauwelt.at Maria Plain, pilgrimage church and communication centre Maria Plain at the northern end of the city of Salzburg has been a popular destination for pilgrims since the 17 th century. The basilica built in 1674 by Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg is the village of Bergheim‘s most famous landmark, a popular place for excursions, and also offers visitors a stunning panoramic view across Salzburg to the Alps beyond. W.A. Mozart was inspired here to compose the famous ‘Coronation Mass’ in honour of the holy Virgin Mary. The Calvary pilgrimage route on this hill features 15 wayside shrines erected in 1705. www.mariaplain.at Salzburg Open Air Museum The 50 hectare open-air museum is located in the Untersberg nature reserve in Großgmain and features 100 original tools and machines from past ages of agriculture, handicrafts, trades and early industrial production. A 7 kilometre network of walks and trekking routes draws together over 600 years of rural history. The pleasant ride to the various parts of the museum on the historical 2 km railway is included in the admission fee and is the latest attraction at the open air museum. Those seeking culinary pleasures and refreshments can look forward to a visit to the cosy museum restaurant, ‘Salettl’, with its very own beer garden and railway station stop. www.freilichtmuseum.com Untersberg The Untersberg is the subject of many a legend and is a popular destination for excursions offering a variety of hiking paths, a ski slope, a cycling circuit, challenging climbing tours, fascinating ice caves and rustic timber lodges around the summit. The mountain‘s primary attraction is its wonderful natural environment. The all-year-round suspension cable car service takes visitors from the valley station in Grödig / St. Leonhard, just outside Salzburg, to the stunning peak at 1853m. On a good day there’s a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding alpine scenery. www.untersbergbahn.at Date of issue: May 2011 | Subject to change without notice! Fortress Hohensalzburg

Originally built in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard, a comprehensive programme of structural developments was overseen by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519). The fortress is the landmark of the city of Mozart and also the largest completely preserved citadel in Central Europe.Tours of the medieval State Rooms (including the Golden Hall), the romantic courtyards and various museums (such as the Fortress Museum) are strongly recommended. Since 1892, Fortress Hohen salzburg has been easily accessible from the Festungs-gasse using Austria’s oldest Cable Railway.www.salzburg-burgen.at

St. Peter‘s Cemetery

St. Peter‘s Cemetery is one of the oldest and most enchanting cemeteries in the world. It serves as the fi nal resting place for many notable personalities, artists, scholars and merchants including Santino Solari (architect and builder of Salzburg Cathedral), Nannerl Mozart (Mozart’s sister), Michael Haydn (composer and brother of Joseph Haydn). The early Christian Catacombs hewn out of the rock face of the Mönchsberg are a special attraction, as are the monastery church, bakery and vaults. St. Peter’s Abbey is believed to be the oldest monastery in the German speaking regions.www.stift-stpeter.at

Salzburg Cathedral

Probably the city’s most signifi cant and most monumental example of sacral architecture is also a focus of religious activity. This impressive northern alpine early baroque building features a magnifi cent façade and a splendorous dome. Its origins are closely linked with the growth and development of this spiritual principality. Destroyed, rebuilt and expanded due to fi res, it is a tribute to the power and independence of Salzburg’s archbishops. Sights worth seeing: The Cathedral Museum and the Excavations Museum.www.salzburger-dom.at

Residenz

The magnifi cent archiepiscopal residential palace served as the seat of Salzburg‘s prince-archbishops from 1120 onwards. The impressive early baroque building acquired its present-day appearance at the end of the 16th century. Open for public viewing, the State Rooms were the entertaining rooms and apartments of Salzburg‘s prince archbishops, and feature several priceless frescos, paintings, tiled ovens, as well as the Residenz Gallery – which showcases European art of the 16th to the 19th centuries. At the heart of square there is the Residenz Fountain, the largest baroque fountain north of the Alps.www.residenzgalerie.at

Mozart Square

Mozart Square is dominated by the statue of Mozart, designed by Ludwig von Schwanthaler and ceremonially unveiled in 1842 in the presence of Mozart‘s sons. Mozart‘s widow, Constanze von Nissen, did not live to see the unveiling. Excavations uncovered a precious Roman mosaic fl oor with the inscription: ‘hic habitat (felicitas), nihil intret mali’ (here dwells happiness, may no evil enter). The poet Georg Trakl was born in the ‘Schaff ner House’ on the adjoining Waagplatz. St. Michael’s Church stands in the westernmost corner of the square and is the oldest intact church in the city.

Salzburg Museum

The museum for art and art history is housed in the magnifi cently renovated New Residenz on Mozart Square. Here valuable objects of art, aesthetic presentations, interesting facts and multimedia installations all blend into a homogeneous whole. The Panorama Museum is located right next door and features a unique panoramic painting (circumference = 26m) by Johann Michael Sattler. It shows the city of Salzburg and its environs around 1829 and every day it is also the gathering point for tours taking in Salzburg’s world-famous sounding of the Carillon from the archiepiscopal palace. www.salzburgmuseum.at

Museum of Modern Art

One museum – two buildings. Salzburg‘sMuseum of Modern Art consists of two buildings in two spectacular locations:The Rupertinum is situated in the old part of town and is a baroque city palace built by the archbishops in close proximity to the Festival Hall and the cathedral. It has been adapted for the purposes of presenting modern art.The museum on the Mönchsberg enjoys a prominent position overlooking the old city and its new, modern architecture was custom-built for housing large-scale exhibitions and collections in an international context.www.museumdermoderne.at

Collegiate Church

Fischer von Erlach‘s masterpiece is one of Europe‘s most important sacred buildings and represents a synthesis of the major architectural systems. Building commenced in 1696 and the church was consecrated in 1707. Salzburg residents and visitors meet in front of the church on weekdays at the so-called ‘Green Market’, a colourful market off ering fresh produces, fl owers and traditional crafts from diff erent regions in the province of Salzburg.www.kollegienkirche.at

Mozart‘s Birthplace

Leopold Mozart and his family lived in the building at no. 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on January 27th, 1756. Today Mozart‘s birthplace is a museum. Famous exhibits include the violin Mozart played as a child, his clavichord, portraits of the Mozart family, their correspondence and original items of furniture. The ‘Getreidegasse’ boasts elaborate guild signs, ornate portals and idyllic arcades, and lies at the heart of Austria‘s most beautiful ‘shopping centre’.www.mozarteum.at

The Festival Halls

The main venue for the annual Salzburg festival. This features the newly renovated Large Lecture Hall; an authentic venue for performances of Mozart’s works and one of the most famous concert halls in the world.www.salzburgerfestspiele.at

Mirabell Palace

The palace was a gift contracted by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in honour of Salome Alt. Today the palace houses the offi ces of the city authorities. The ‘Angel Staircase’ leads up to the Marble Hall, previously used for representative functions, and where Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl often played. Today it is considered one of ’the most beautiful wedding halls in the world’. The Mirabell Gardens also feature numerous enchanting attractions, such as the fountain, the amusing ‘Gnome Garden’, wonderfully arranged fl owerbeds, a maze and the ‘Hedge Theatre’.www.stadt-salzburg.at

Mozart’s Residence

The fi rst documentary record of the house at no. 8 Makartplatz appeared in 1617. W. A. Mozart lived here from 1773 to 1781. The rooms of the former Mozart family home on the fi rst fl oor now house a museum dedicated to the history of the house and Mozart’s family. Original fortepiano. The Holy Trinity Church ‘Dreifaltigkeits-kirche’ further up the square is the most important example of sacred architecture on the right bank of the old city and was the fi rst architectural creation from the feather of the great baroque master builder, Fischer von Erlach.www.mozarteum.at

Linzer Gasse

The ancient Linzer Gasse begins at the ‘Platzl’ by the ‘Staatsbrücke’ and runs along the foot of the Kapuzinerberg off ering both shade and protection. The diversity of fauna and fl ora is still evident on the Kapuzinerberg thanks to the untouched nature and closeness of the woods off ering countless paths and wonderful views of the city of Salzburg.

St. Sebastian

The history of St. Sebastian‘s Church dates back to Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach who had the church built from 1505 to 1512. The church is adjoined by St. Sebastian‘s Cemetery, designed around 1600 in the style of an Italian campo santo. It is the fi nal resting place of Mozart’s father, Leopold, Mozart’s wife, Constanze, her second husband, Georg Nikolaus von Nissen and the ‘father’ of modern medicine, Paracelsus. The most magnifi cent grave of all, the chapel of Gabriel, is the mausoleum of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich.

Hellbrunn

In 1612 Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus ordered master cathedral builder Santino Solari to build what is to this day one of the most splendid examples of renaissance architecture on the northern side of the Alps – the summer residence palace in Hellbrunn and its spacious park. The world famous trick fountains, mysterious and mystical grottos, fi gures animated by water and hidden jets all around the palace, are enjoyed just as much today as they were back then by the Archbishop and his guests. The ‘Monatsschlösschen’ villa is now home to the Folklore Museum.www.hellbrunn.at

Salzburg Zoo

Salzburg Zoo is situated at the southern end of Salzburg in the immediate vicinity of Hellbrunn Palace. The Zoo houses around 800 wild animals and 140 species from all over the world on a 14 hectare landscape in an authentic and generously sized natural open air environment. The zoo’s unique topology off ers a sheer rock face on one side and leads down in various places to the woods and fl ood plain below where both domestic and exotic animals bask and play, from the Alpine ibex through to the banded mongoose. There’s also a section where children can pet and stroke animals such as ‘woolly pigs’, peacock goats and other such creatures.www.salzburg-zoo.at
