less difficult. It is like catching and ·depicting the typical expression of a human countenance. Genius puts in its work there. I do not atempt such an analysis. 1 f [ merely mention three of the fe'atures of the Wake Forest spirit, three of the "pP.rsonal traits" of Wake Forest, I should like it remembered that, when they combine with one another and with others unmentioned, they produce, like chemicals, compounds having properties not present in the components. 'fhe peculiarity appears for the most part ·only in the combination.

'fhe first of these· featlires is . loyalty,-loyalty to the. college and loyalty to one another. You 1·nay meet a Wake :b,orest man in Oregon or Maine, in France or China, but you will not wait long to learn where he got his college training. It is ·not so much that he is proud of his Alma Mater, though that is true. It is rather that he hardly thinks of himself apart from his college. He is himself an extension of the college consciousness, so that wherever be is there is Wake Forest.

Another feature of Wake For-: est is the habit and tradition of work. T am not saying that frivolous rattle-brains ue\rei· co1;ie to~· this college, or that loafers never kill hei·e the time of others as well as their own. It is the general momentum of the pl~ce of which I speak, the serious-mind edness under · which the mass moves, the tonic drive in the atmosphere. ·This wholesome tradition of work goes a good way toward explaining the position of leadership which Wake Foresters 'hold in the public life of .North Carolina and the South.

Democracy is the third feature of the Wake :b,orest '' expre-:;sion." No fraternities disintegrate the unity of the student body. Every man stands in his own shoes. 'fhe snob invariabl~· gets his tail feathers plucked. You land where your merit ancl ability carry you. Good birth and good manners are ~xcellent in themselYes, but a \V akc Fot·:•:,t man needs to add_ other items to that inventory. Through many years the college has sought to make the life of its students congenial, generous, and clemocra· tic. Fellowship is the great worcl of the college community, fd~

lowship. between students and . students, between studoots and teachers, fellowship on th~ .. basis of brotherhood in the pursuit· of the best. it makes the llappines~

ating _class of an accred!~ed sec~ondary scho·ol in North Carolina. Unlike the essay contests he~d by the other colleges of_ the State, this contest allows a school to submit more than one essay if it desires .to do so; and unlike the Declamation Contest l1eld here it is open to 'girls. The provision is made that if the first prize is won by a girl, she will .place the scholarship at the disposal of the principal of her school to be given by him to some w·orthy male member of the graduating class.

The essay, containing not more than seven hundred words and written on the subject mentionerl above, must be submitted to MJ'. Reid on or before April 20. E~says must_ be accomp~nied by a certificate from the principal of the school stating that the essay is the work of the senrler and that the sender is a bona fitle member of the graduating· dasf::. says must be accompanied by a the secr~tary and submitted to a committee consisting of President William Louis Poteat and Dr. Benjamin F. Sledd and Pro-_ fessor S. A. Derieux of the English Department, who will determine the winners of the three prizes.

In order to aid the contestants in the preparation of the essays, it is suggested that the essays be·
