It is with immense pleasure that I write this message at the time the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute welcomes the 19th batch of students being selected to follow its BAMS degree programme. These new students are fortunate to enter the Institute at a time it witnesses the outcomes of its rapid development in the recent past. According to the current trends in the world, one thing is certain – Ayurveda medical knowledge will be a key resource and will be highly sought-after within Sri Lanka and around the world. It is in this context that GWAI is taking every possible step to train you to be par with international Ayurveda practitioners, where you will be valued both for your specialized Ayurveda knowledge and your ability to research, communicate and solve problems in the field of health. PREAMBLE

Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute (GWAI) of University of Kelaniya, the successor Institute of Gampaha Siddhayurveda Medical College founded by renowned patriot traditional Ayurveda Physician Late Ayurveda Cakrawarti Pandit G.P. Wickramarachchi in 1929, was established by the Government Notification of Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 with effect from 1st March, 1995, as an autonomous institute to set patterns in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Ayurveda Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Ayurveda education.

The course leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) has been in existence since 1998. It mainly follows a disciplinary structure. However, since inception, GWAI has been constantly upgrading its course content in tune with the changing needs. Many alterations, which have taken place during the period of many years, have been reflected in the present curriculum document.

Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree programme is a professional degree in the field of Ayurveda Medicine developed as per the guidelines and benchmarks declared by World Health Organization and University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka.

The curriculum and Syllabus of BAMS degree programme leads to develop Ayurveda Medical Professionals, who are competent to practice independently in any setting of the community. The curriculum and syllabus have been designed not only to acquire necessary knowledge, clinical skills but also to improve professional attitudes so as to work as a member of healthcare team.

The structure of the curriculum covers philosophical background of Ayurveda, basic sciences, behavioural sciences, clinical sciences, community health and medical jurisprudence. Special attention is given to generate necessary language skills and skills in information and communication technology which have been identified as prime requirement for effective learning and practice of Ayurveda.

The content of each course unit has been organized to generate essential knowledge, understanding, skills and professional attitudes from fundamental theoretical aspect to practical aspect. BAMS degree programme is fortified with the introduction of research methodology and basic statistics leading to conduct a research project with the aim of generating enthusiasm in invention and development of the Ayurveda.

Norm reference method of evaluation is followed in assessing the student's performances instead of criteria reference method. Each component of the curriculum will be assessed continuously at mid-semester examinations and end-semester examinations.

All BAMS undergraduates are expected, at the successful completion of the programme, to have professional skills to approach indigenous medical practice with sufficient knowledge of basic principles of Ayurveda, required intellectual and practical skills in enquiry, clinical reasoning, critical thinking and decision making in accepted ethical and legal frame. In addition, the BAMS undergraduates are expected to have standard professional values, attitudes, behaviour and ethics so as to recognize as qualified Ayurveda Professionals.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. Internal Studentship: Any person registered in the BAMS Degree programme as a student of this Institute is deemed to be an internal student of the Institute. He/she is entitled to freely enter the premises of the Institute and to enjoy the facilities provided for students by the Institute.

2. Entry into the Institute premises: No student shall remain in the Institute premises after the regular hours except with permission from the Institute authorities. Once the Library is closed for the day, no student shall remain in any part of the Institute premises.

3. Ascertainment of Student Identity: It is imperative for a student to produce the student Identity card or the student Record book whenever called upon to do so by any Teacher, Officer or Security of the Institute.

4. Attendance at Lectures and Tutorial Classes: Any student, who fails to register himself/herself for the course of study for which he/she has been admitted, shall not be entitled to attend lectures and tutorial classes. Any student, who wishes to discontinue or suspend a course of studies at any time before or after the commencement of an academic year, should inform the Senior Assistant Registrar/Examinations, of such intention in writing.

5. Communication of Information: It is extremely important to read daily notices issued by the Institute regarding various matters relevant to students.

6. Certificates and Transcripts: Original certificates submitted at the time of registration and student transcripts can be obtained through the SAR/Examinations Division.

7. Forwarding Appeals: i. Appeals relating to deferment/postponement of academic activities on special

grounds shall be submitted to the Examinations Division and documents relevant to such appeals shall also be submitted.

ii. Appeals relating to inability to sit for examinations shall be submitted to the Examinations Division before the expiry of two weeks from the last date of such examinations. Appeals on medical grounds shall be made according to the prescribed format together with a medical certificate at the time of forwarding such appeal. Appeals not submitted as aforesaid will not be accepted. Medical Certificates shall be confirmed by the Institutional Medical Officer.

8. Students Discipline: The Director of the Institute shall be responsible for maintenance of discipline within the Institute. Students who commit acts of misconduct shall be dealt with according to rules and regulations made by the University Grants Commission in respect of student discipline from time to time.

THE BAMS DEGREE PROGRAMME

The BAMS degree programme is a fulltime course consisting of pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines running throughout a period of five years. Additional one year internship training in Government Ayurveda Hospitals is needed for registration at Ayurveda Medical Council.

Goals and Objectives of Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) Degree Programme The goal of the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery degree programme is to generate a competent Ayurveda Medical Professionals so as to provide effective and efficient services in development of physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of mankind by acting as a member of health team at primary, secondary and tertiary core levels.

Graduate Profile Upon successful completion of five academic years of BAMS degree programme, the graduate will be able to; 1. Diagnose and manage common health problems of the individual and the

community appropriate to his/her position as a member of the health team at primary, secondary and tertiary levels;

2. Be competent to practice preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative Ayurveda medicine in respect to the commonly encountered health problems;

3. Practice evidence based medicine, appreciating the rationale for different therapeutic modalities and be familiar with the administration of “essential drugs” and their common side effects;

4. Appreciate the psycho-social, cultural, economic, and environmental factors affecting health, and develop human attitude towards the patients/relatives, in discharging one’s professional responsibilities;

5. Be familiar with the various National Health Programmes, and the ways in which they are being implemented;

6. Acquire basic management skills in the area of materials, financial and human resources;

7. Demonstrate communication skills, both verbal and written to establish effective communication with the clients (patients, relatives, and general public), health team partners, and scientific community;

8. Practice medical ethics in patient care, service delivery, and research; 9. Develop attitude for self-learning and acquire necessary skills including the

use of appropriate technologies, for pursuing self-directed learning for a life time;

10. Demonstrate skills in generating new knowledge for the development of Ayurveda.

STRUCTURE OF THE BAMS DEGREE PROGRAMME The syllabus and curriculum structured on course unit system, which runs in academic semesters. The duration of a semester is 15 weeks. A course unit is a subject module bearing a credit value. A credit is a time based quantitative measure excluding the independent learning hours used in calculating the grade point average.

Orientation programme:

The orientation programme, which is conducted in the first three weeks before commencement of BAMS degree programme, is organized and fortified by introducing new components to motivate the students for initiation of self-oriented learning in a university environment. A well-structured unit of English for Medical Education and an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit leading to obtain national and international qualifications in English language skills and ICT skills using an advanced language laboratory and ICT resource centre have been introduced. The orientation programme also consists of other important units. All BAMS undergraduates will be guided for effective learning by introducing various techniques and strategies in the "Guidance for Ayurveda Medical Learning" course units. Library and Information Technology unit provides opportunity to be familiar with the library and acquisition of relevant information from wide range of resources. Medical Ethics and Professionalism will make self-esteem in practice of Ayurveda. Music, Yoga and Meditation for healthy learning will help the students to enhance their learning with mental and physical relaxation and Introduction to Advances in Ayurveda will motivate students for innovation. Level I of BAMS Degree Programme

Level I of BAMS degree programme starts after the completion of orientation programme and span within a period of two semesters (30 weeks of academic activities). The Level I of BAMS curriculum begins with a study of Basic Principles of Ayurveda in which philosophical background in Ayurveda will be given. Normal human body and its processes at the molecular and cellular levels will be taught comparatively in Mänavaçaréraracanävijïäna (Human Gross Anatomy),

Mänavaçarérakriyävijïäna (Human Physiology) and Biochemistry.

Level II of BAMS Degree Programme

Level II of BAMS degree programme starts after the completion of level I and span within a period of two semesters (30 weeks of academic activities). Molecular Biology, Genetics and Embryology will be presented concurrently building together the concepts of macromolecular and cellular interactions within tissues. Practical training will be given at relevant laboratories. Preclinical subjects are followed by para-clinical subjects of the degree programme where the

student receives a competency in the fields of Dravyaguëakarmavijïäna

(Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology), Ayurveda Pharmacy, Pathology, and Microbiology. Advanced courses in Sanskrit Language will be conducted at level II to enhance the language skills necessary for Ayurveda learning. Course Details

Level III of BAMS Degree Programme

Histopathology, Microbiology, Svastavåtta (Community Medicine), Forensic Medicine, Research Methodology and Medical Statistics will be taught during the period of two semesters of Level III. Practical training will be given at the relevant laboratories and institutional medicinal garden. Advanced courses in English Language and Information and Communication Technology will be conducted at level III to enhance the language and ICT skills necessary for Ayurveda learning. Level IV of BAMS Degree Programme

Level IV of BAMS Degree Programme consists of two semesters in which clinical training will be provided so as to be a competent Ayurveda professional. The student will be able to gain a thorough knowledge and skills in the fields of Käyacikitsä (Medicine), Shalyatantra (Surgery), Strée Roga and Prasütitantra

(Gynaecology and Obstetrics), Kaumärabhåtya (Paediatrics), Shäläkyatantra

(Creniootorhinolaryngology), Agadatantra (Toxicology) and Mänasacikitsä

(Psychiatry). Total 9 credits research project, which opens a new path for the student in Ayurveda education to acquire basic knowledge and skills in generating new knowledge, conducted during level IV and level V as a core component in this degree programme. Course Details

Clinical Training of BAMS Degree Programme Basically, the clinical training of BAMS degree programme will be provided at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital and extended training in selected Ayurveda Hospitals in different provinces. Students will rotate in 04 weeks clinical appointments in major disciplines and subspecialties during the level IV.

Teaching and Learning Methods The Institute use diverse teaching learning strategies including Lectures, Tutorials, Small group discussions, Integrated seminars (student centred), Clinical Training, Clinical lecture demonstrations, Field visits and Community projects. Teaching learning strategies have been shifted to more student centred and directed self-learning in the new curriculum instead of prominent didactic teaching.

Lectures Objectives will be made clear to the students at the beginning. Well-structured course materials and hand-outs will be given. All attempts will be taken to make the lectures more interactive rather than didactic.

Tutorials and small group discussions Tutorial questions will be given before tutorial classes and students are expected to provide answers by self-learning. Answers will be discussed in small student groups and feedback will be given.

Integrated seminars Student centred integrated seminars will be organized by departments to provide opportunities for problem oriented discussions in each discipline.

Community Based Medical Learning (CBML) programmes Integrated community based medical learning projects will be organized by the

departments to acquire necessary understanding, experience and skills in

managing health needs of the community. Student will have the opportunity to

develop soft skills via compassionate communication with the individuals of the

community.

Research Project Student research project is a core component of BAMS degree programme. Guidance on research methodology, Supervision and assessment of the research project will be done by the senior academic staff of the Institute.

ASSESSMENTS IN BAMS DEGREE PROGRAMME

Student's performances in all components of BAMS degree programme will be assessed continuously. Intellectual skills, Knowledge, Practical skills and attitudes will be assessed through the written, practical, viva-voce examinations, assignments, reports and presentations. The progress of research project of the BAMS Degree Programme will be assessed continuously.

At the end of BAMS degree programme the Grade Point Average will be calculated according to the accepted equation and classes will be awarded.

Provision for Re-Scrutinization of Marks and Grades of Undergraduates

Each student has the opportunity to request for re-scrutinization of marks and grades of subjects they have appeared at any examination. Re-scrutinization of marks and grades of subjects will be done according to the guide lines declared by the UGC Circular No. 978.

BAMS DEGREE BY-LAWS

GENERAL REGULATIONS

1) These By-Laws may be cited as the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) Degree By-Laws.

2) Subject to these By-Laws, a student may be awarded the Degree of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery, if she/he

a) has been admitted as an internal student of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute of the University of Kelaniya, and

b) has been registered as a student of the Institute for a period not less than 5 years, and

c) has completed to the satisfaction of the Senate, courses of study as prescribed by these By Laws and Rules and Regulations made there under, and

d) has completed all registered course units within the period of 10 academic years from the date of first registration, and

e) has paid such fees or other dues as may be prescribed by the Institute, and

f) has fulfilled any other conditions or requirements as may be prescribed by the Institute.

3) The examinations leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery shall be as follows:

a) Mid and End Semester Examinations of First & Second Semester of Level I

b) Mid and End Semester Examinations of First & Second Semester of Level II

c) Mid and End Semester Examinations of First & Second Semester of Level III

d) Mid and End Semester Examinations of First & Second Semester of Level IV

e) Mid and End Semester Examinations of First & Second Semester of Level V

4) These general regulations are applicable to all examinations leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery.

5) The course units/ subjects of this course and syllabus for the examinations leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery and forms of assessments in each examination shall be prescribed by the regulations made by the Senate of the University of Kelaniya.

6) Each of the examinations prescribed by these By-Laws and the regulations there under shall be conducted by a Board of Examiners constituted for the conduct of that examination.

7) Students are required to register for course units of two semesters of the particular level at the beginning of each semester. They should register course units aggregating minimum of 15 credits including all core course units of each semester to be eligible for the registration of the particular level.

8) A student must successfully complete all core course units of Level I, II and III to register in Level IV.

a) A student who fails to fulfill the above requirement will not be allowed to register for the Level IV. Such a student is required to repeat the year of study by attending all classes and practical sessions related to the failed course units, and pass the assessments in order to be eligible to enter the Level IV.

b) However, if any student fails to complete successfully a Level III core course unit or not appeared for a mid-semester or end semester examination of Level III core course unit with a valid excuse1 in the first attempt, will be given a temporary registration for the Level IV only for the following academic year.

c) In such a case the results of the Level IV should be withheld until successfully completion of the Level III core course units.

9) Marks obtained in each course unit will be graded according to the following grading system. A grade point value is indicated below is assigned to each grade.

10) Students should score at least minimum C grade for each course unit for successful completion of the course unit and if they fail to complete successfully a particular course unit, it will be indicated in the transcript as “absent” and a zero (0.0) grade point value will be assigned to it.

11) A candidate must have evidence of satisfactory participation of the relevant mandatory course works to obtain the grades of the particular course unit.

a) a minimum of 75% attendance is compulsory for course unit to consider the maximum achievement obtain by the student,

b) If the attendance at a course unit is greater than or equal to 50% but less than 75%, the best grade obtainable by the student will be C and,

c) If the attendance at a course unit is less than 50% the best grade obtainable by the student will be D whatever the marks she/he obtained at the determination of the grade point value.

d) If the candidate’s absence from mandatory course works/clinicals is covered by a valid excuse2, would be considered as her/his valid attendance.

12) Marks obtained for the mid semester examination in candidate’s first attempt will be taken into consideration for the relevant examination.

a) If a candidate has not appeared for a mid-semester/ end semester examination and has a valid excuse3, she/he must be allowed to sit the same examination in the subsequent year as her/his first sitting.

b) If a candidate has not appeared for a mid-semester/ end semester examination and has not a valid excuse4, she/he should sit the same examination in the subsequent year as a repeat candidate.

c) If a candidate has not appeared for a mid-semester/ end semester examination in her/his second attempt with or without a valid excuse hereafter she/he should consider as a repeat candidate.

d) If a candidate has not appeared for both the mid semester and the end semester examinations without a valid excuse she/he should consider as a repeat candidate.

e) The end semester results should be withheld until completion of the mid semester examination of the particular course unit.

f) The grading system to be used in the end semester examination must also be used for determination of grades in the mid semester examination.

13) A student who obtains a grade below C in a particular course unit, may re-sit the examination of that course unit in the following academic year for the purpose of improving the grade. However, the best grade obtainable by a student in this instance is C. In an event a student obtains a lower grade while attempting to get a better grade; she/he will be entitled to remain in the previous grade.

14) A student will be allowed five consecutive attempts to successfully complete a given course unit. Any student who fails to meet this requirement will not be eligible to graduate.

15) Grade point values and credit values of all registered Core course units, Compulsory course units and Elective course units excluding the Compulsory* course units of the BAMS degree programme shall be taken into account in calculating the final GPA.

16) Grade Point Average (GPA) is the credit weighted arithmetic mean of the Grade Point Values, which is determined by dividing the total credit-weighted Grade Point Value by the total number of credits excluding the credits of compulsory* course units. GPA shall be computed to the second decimal place.

17) A candidate shall not be eligible for classes, distinctions or medals unless she/he has taken the examination on the earliest occasion on which she/he is qualified to do so, provided that it shall be within the power of the Senate to declare, for some specified reason, that she/he is eligible for classes, distinctions and medals at a subsequent examination.

18) If a candidate is withdraws or absent for the entire examination at the first scheduled attempt, and a) she/ he has a valid excuse accepted by the Board of Management5, the

candidate may sit for the next examination as her/his first attempt.

b) she/ he does not have a valid excuse accepted by the Board of Management6, the candidate must sit for the next examination as a repeat candidate and shall not be eligible for classes.

19) A student may be granted permission to postpone a scheduled attempt at an examination on the basis of a valid excuse accepted by the Board of

Management7. The attempt at which she/he sits the examination after the

postponement shall be regarded as the attempt for which she/he has submitted a valid excuse.

20) In the absence of an excuse accepted by the Board of Management8, failure

to sit any due or scheduled examination shall be considered as an unsuccessful attempt at that examination.

21) A candidate who has been completed the all registered course units, will be eligible to award the BAMS degree and honours as follows.

a) Eligibility for the award of Bachelor of the Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree

To be eligible for the BAMS degree, a student must obtains

Accumulate grades of C or better in all core, compulsory and compulsory* course units aggregating to a minimum of 150 credits excluding the credits of compulsory* course units and

Obtain a minimum GPA of 2.00

b) Eligibility for the award of honours of the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree

i. First Class Honours A student who is eligible for the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree may be awarded a First Class Honours provided she/he

Accumulate grades of C or better in all core, compulsory and compulsory* course units aggregating to a minimum of 150 credits excluding the credits of compulsory* course units and

Obtains grades of A or better in course units aggregating to at least 100 credits from core and compulsory course units and

Obtains a minimum GPA of 3.70

ii. Second Class (Upper Division) Honours

A student who is eligible for the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree may be awarded Second Class (Upper Division) Honours provided she/he

Accumulate grades of C or better in all core, compulsory and compulsory* course units aggregating to a minimum of 150 credits excluding the credits of compulsory* course units and

Obtains grades of B or better in course units aggregating to at least 100 credits from core and compulsory course units and

Obtains a minimum GPA of 3.30

iii. Second Class (Lower Division) Honours A student who is eligible for the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree may be awarded Second Class (Lower Division) Honours provided she/he

Accumulate grades of C or better in all core, compulsory and compulsory* course units aggregating to a minimum of 150 credits excluding the credits of compulsory* course units and

Obtains grades of B or better in course units aggregating to at least 100 credits from core and compulsory course units and

Obtains a minimum GPA of 3.00

22) In case of pre termination of study or if a student does not satisfy the

minimum requirement to award the BAMS degree she/he will be considered to award the Diploma in Ayurveda Sciences upon a written request made by the student if she/he has successfully completed the Level III of the BAMS degree programme.

Special Note:

If any student is required to cancel the registration of an Elective Course Unit

after registration, she/he must cancel the registration of particular course

unit within the first two weeks from the commencement date of the

respective semester or within first two lectures by giving written request to

the Senior Assistant Registrar/Examinations using relevant format with the

recommendation of the relevant department head.

Dravyagunakarma Vignana (Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology)

The basic concepts and theories of Ayurveda pharmacognosy and pharmacology. The

details study on drugs of natural origin in perspective of Ayurveda and their actions on the

systems of the human body. This will function within the second and third levels of the

BAMS degree course.

Bhaisajya Kalpana (Herbal Pharmacy)

The basic concepts and theories applied in herbal pharmacy, understand and developing

skills on usage of appropriate instruments, equipment and utensils in preparation of drugs

and collection, preservation, strong, processing of materials used for the preparation of

herbal drugs in Ayurveda. The course functions in third level of the B.A.M.S. Degree

course.

Rasa Shastra (Mineral Pharmacy)

The basic concepts and theories applied in mineral pharmacy, usage of appropriate

instruments, equipment and utensils in preparation of mineral drugs and collection,

preservation, storing, processing of materials used for the preparation of mineral and

herbomineral drugs. The course functions in the second level of the B.A.M.S. Degree

course.

Currently the Department of Kaumārabhṛtya and Strī Roga functions through

three subject division:

B.A.M.S. students of level IV and level V follow lecturers and receive practical experience in the same subject area at Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital and Antenatal clinics at maternity home – Kalagedihena under five course units.

At present academic staff of this department consists of two Senior Lecturers, one Lecturer and two Probationary Lecturers. This department conducts three

Strī Roga (Ayurveda Gynecology) clinics and Bāla Roga clinic (Ayurveda Pediatric)

at Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Hospital for four days of the week. Academics in this department are doing research in its related fields and collaborative research with other disciplines as well. Cases of special areas like sub fertility (male and female), endometriosis, uterine fibroids, Bartholin cyst and

PCOD are treated at Strī Roga clinic. Shērshāmbu (Hydrocephaly), Mahāshīrsha

(Macrocephaly), Cerebral palsy and behavioral disorders, Nutritional disorders, Child hood constipation and Pediatric heart diseases other than the common skin

and respiratory problems are concern at Bāla Roga clinic. This helps to get more

clinical exposure to Ayurveda undergrads. Students, who are studying in their final year, engage themselves in research work specially clinical and analytical studies under the supervision of our department. We are supervising students who are in the level IV and level V of

BAMS undergraduates and postgraduate students (MSc, PGD) to do research work in our disciplines. We are also coordinating certificate courses (Ayurveda Beauty Culture Course and Ultrasound Scanning) to improve the BAMS student's knowledge and skills it is also to open up opportunities for related professionals. academic and non-academic staff of the institute. The centre consists of a main laboratory and is equipped with 100 computers, servers and other accessories. Opening hours The centre is open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm (except during lunch hour) on working days. The centre will be opened till 5.15 pm on working days and Saturdays if special request are made. Staff The staff includes Coordinator of the centre, two computer instructors, a Technical officer and a Labour. Services The main services provided by the ICT centre include:

1. Conducting all computer lectures and practical related to IT course units of BAMS program and Postgraduate course.

2. Conducting the Computer Literacy Course for undergraduates of the Institute.

3. Conducting special computer training programs and consultation services for academic & non-academic staff of the institute.

4. Providing and maintaining Internet facilities of all the departments and divisions.

5. Maintaining and developing the networks of the institute providing link to the departments and divisions.

7. Providing technical services and consultations to all the departments and

Guidelines for using the computer Center 1. The facilities of the centre can be used under the direction of the staff of the

ICT centre. 2. Students can obtain permission to use computer for self-training, data

analysis, completion of thesis etc. However, these services will be provided only if no other computer training program is being conducted at the centre.

3. Flash Drive & CD's should be used only with permission of the staff. 4. All users are requested to follow the instructions given by the ICT centre. 5. All users are required to make a record of arrival and departure at the

attendance record book maintained by the ICT centre. 6. All inquiries should be directed to Coordinator of the ICT Centre Internet & E-mail Facilities Internet facilities have been obtained through a leased line from LEARN. The facilities can be obtained by any student or a staff member of the Institute. These facilities can be obtained through the Network system of the Institute too. 01. LOCATION Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute Library has located in the Pandit G.P. Wickramarachchi Memorial Library Building. It is being developed as a Higher Educational Library that introduced with the establishment of the Institute. The main objectives of this Library are firstly, to provide resources necessary for

education and research in the fields of Ayurveda, Indigenous Medicine, Medical

Sciences, Health Science and other related disciplines. Secondly, to provide and

promote excellent and innovative Library Services. Thirdly, to develop the special

collections and to enhance electronic resources and fourthly, to automate library

02. ORGANIZATION

To fulfill its goals and above mentioned objectives, the library has organized as

Reference Section, Lending Section, Rare Books Unit, Periodicals Unit, ICT,

Research and Development Unit and Special Collections. As a subsidiary service,

there was establish and academic library inaugurating student centered,

renovated services, simultaneously being as an affiliated institute to the

University.

The Library collection contains of more than 32,400 Books and monographs

published in Sanskrit, Pali, Sinhala, Hindi, Bengali & English Languages. There

some academic journals in the periodical unit. All of the books arranged in the

Library are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC)

and catalogued in accordance with the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR-

2 R). The collection are being computerized by using the KOHA, open source

software package.

03. ORGANIZATION OF LIBRARY SERVICES

Student centered library services have organized in the library building in

accordance with the development plan and implemented them according to the

code of library statutes. The library services were organized as expectations of

the objectives and goals of the library as the following manner.

04. MEMBERSHIP

The registered membership of the Library is about 600 members in quantity and

the membership is given to the categories of (a) Internal Students (b)

Postgraduate Students (c) Academic Staff (d) Non-Academic Staff and to (e)

Senior Executive Staff.

The approved Statute of this library is successive to that of the University

Libraries and as a guideline, main important Rules and Regulations of the Code of

Statute has enumerated below:

N.B. - Library shall be closed on public holidays & on special holidays of the University.

The Library would be closed down on Public Holidays & in the Special Holidays of

the Institute. This Time Schedule would be extended during examinations season

that would be noticed as requirements of the Readers.

06. MEMBERSHIP FOR INTERNAL STUDENTS

Membership is given to all new entrants registered as Internal Students at the

Examination Division when applied from the library office after ending of the

Foundation Course.

External Students or special readers are to be allowed to enter the library only

after getting the Director's approval and permission.

07. ENROLLMENT

Library Tickets are issued to all categories of registered members according to the

Library Rules. New entrants after proving the identity, by presenting Identity

Cards with the duly filled application form, at the Readers' Services Officer, would

receive the relevant library tickets with the membership itself.

These tickets are property of the G.W.A.I. It should not be transferred to anyone

else. If they are lost, it should be reported to Librarian with immediate effect. A

sum of Rs. 15.00 is charged to issue a duplicate.

09. RENEWAL OF LIBRARY TICKETS

Readers should be produced their library tickets to the Readers' Services Officer

for renewal their tickets yearly. If not they are unable to get lending facilities as

issuing lending books is upheld. If a Reader lost his/her library tickets, new copies

of the same (after three months notice at once a time in the same year) re -

issued according to the Library Rules.

10. ARRANGEMENT OF BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

Library books are arranged systematically in accordance with the Classification &

Call Numbers of them. For searching books, if you prefer open access, you are

recommended to reach the books by direct approach. If you are willing closed

access, first use the Library Catalogue for searching the required book, and then

approach the Racks. When selecting books, don't replace the order of the

arrangement of them. (Please refer Rare Books with the permission of an

authorized officer in the Section.) Readers are informed that the Permanent

Reference & Rare Books are to be used only in the Library. They are not

permitted to be referred outside the Library. The classification system used in the

11. ISSUING OF LIBRARY BOOKS

When presenting library tickets with the Institute ID, Lending books are issued

from Lending Section for a duration of 14 days only. The due date of returning

would be entered on the Book Slip. If the book wanted further, after 14 days, the

due date could be extended for another 14 days. (This is limited to once.) The

reader who borrowed the books should bear responsibility for them. So it is

his/her duty to protect the borrowed books attentively.

S.R. Books are issued after 1.00 p.m. and they should be returned to the Library

on the following day before 10.00 a.m. unless the books returned as prescribed,

he/she is surrendered to a penalty according to library laws.

Late Charges Lending Section - Rs. 2.00 (For a Book, per day)

Reference Section - Rs. 5.00 (For a Book, per day)

A receipt would be issued for each payment. All payments should be done at the

Account Department. In case of lost books, a new copy or new edition of the

same would be accepted by the library. If not, levies would be charged as a fine

including a three fourth of the value of the lost book plus 25% surcharge with

binding charges or related fees if any.

13. SECURITY PROVISIONS

During the period of being in the library, students are required to keep with them their ID or student’s Record Book issued by the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute. If it needed for inspection, they should be produced before an officer. Readers are advised that having meals, smoking and using mobile phones in the library is completely prohibited. Please switch off them when you entering into the library. Bags & Baggage, Umbrellas, Private Books, Practical Work Books, Files and parcels are not allowed to carry into the Library. They must be kept in the Baggage's Counter at the owner's risk. When leaving away from the library, be kind enough to present borrowed SR books & Lending Books to the Security Officer and wait a minute until he/she get note down the details in the register about them. In the library, avoid interrupting to others, protecting the silence and avoid shouting loud & friendly speaking, discussions, sound reading and sound walking. They are completely prohibited and accept the responsibility to keep & maintain full silence & calmness in the library with consideration. Maintaining discipline, good conduct & manners, abiding to law, take care of resources & obedient to Library Staff is thoroughly expected from all the readers. Violations of library law is a convictable offence. The Library Staff is always ready to do their best to support and help the readers in using library books and resources and any necessities. Senior Assistant Librarian earnestly requires the readers to send him any suggestions and views by them in cause of development of library services as necessary.

EXAMINATIONS & STUDENT WELFARE DIVISION

Senior Assistant Registrar

All the matters regarding internal examinations are conducted by this section. This division deals with the announcement of respective examinations and the rules, regulations and instructions. Rules and Regulations Related to the Written Examinations (Schedule - 01)

1.01 Candidates should be in the vicinity of the examination hall 15 minutes

before the commencement of the question paper and should enter the

examination hall only when the supervisor gives them permission to do so.

1.02 As soon as the candidates enter the examination hall, they should seat

themselves in the seats bearing their index number. The seat cannot be

changed except with the special permission of the supervisor.

1.03 No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination hall 30 minutes

after the commencement of the examination. Once the examination starts,

candidates are not allowed to exit from the examination hall in the first 30

minutes of the examination. Any candidate may leave from the hall after

handing over the Answer Script to the supervisor, but no candidates are

allowed to leave the hall in the last 30 minutes of the examination.

1.04 All candidates should bring their admission cards to the examination hall, along with their Student Identity Card/Student Record Book.

1.04.01 Candidacy of those who fail to submit the said documents is liable to be cancelled.

1.04.02 If the candidate does not have the admission form, she/he should furnish a statement signed according to the format supplied by the supervisor in order to sit the examination. The candidate should produce the required documents to prove identity when she/he sits the next examination paper.

1.04.03 If this happens to be the last and the only paper the candidate is sitting, the aforementioned documents should be shown to the AR/ SAR of the Examination Division, on the next working day.

1.04.04 If the Student Record Book/Student Identity Card is lost during the examination, a second copy/ identity card should be obtained from the AR/ SAR of the Examination Division.

1.04.05 If there is a difference between the name that appears in the Student Record Book/Identity Card and the Admission Card, a Certificate obtained from the AR/ SAR of the Examination Division confirming the above should be produced. In case of failure to submit such a certificate, the National Identity Card, or a recently taken photograph certified by an authorized person should be submitted.

1.05 During the examination, the admission card or the relevant part of the

admission card should be handed over to the invigilator after signing the

form in the presence of the invigilator, by the candidate. Subsequently, the

candidates should sign in the due place of the admission card at each

session of the examination.

1.06 The candidates should bring only the necessary instruments such as pens,

pencils, bottles of ink, erasers, rulers, geometrical instruments, colored

pencils which are legally permitted to be brought for their use. In addition,

the candidate should be responsible not to bring into the examination hall

any sort of document, note or an instrument which could be improperly

used. Specifically, the candidate should not keep mobile phones,

calculators or other electronic communication equipment or any other

technical equipment with her/him during the examination.

1.07 The candidate should promptly produce any document, object or any

instrument which is near her/him or in her/his care as and when the

supervisor asks for it.

1.08 Candidates are prohibited from asking or exchanging anything, conversing

or copying from any other candidate or any document. No assistance of

any sort should be obtained from another candidate/person. Copying from

another candidate or encouraging or assisting another candidate to copy is

strictly prohibited.

1.09 Only the writing books and papers issued for the day should be used for

writing answers to the questing paper. It is the candidate's responsibility to

check whether the date stamp bearing the valid date and the invigilator's

signature are placed on the books or/and the answering sheet. If the frank

of the valid date with the signature of the supervisor or invigilator is not

placed on the answering books and papers such stationery should not be

used to write the answers. It is the responsibility of the candidate to inform

the supervisor as soon as possible, and get the papers with the valid date

and signature.

1.10 The required stationery to write answers (i.e. writing paper, graph papers,

drawing papers, ledger papers etc.) will be issued to candidates as and

when necessary. Tearing, scratching, folding, crushing or destroying any

paper or book supplied to the candidate is prohibited. Only the stationery

supplied by the supervisor or invigilator should be used, all the stationery

and instruments supplied to the candidate (used/unused) should be left on

the desk and should not be taken out of the examination hall.

1.11 Before starting to answer the question paper, the registration number of

the candidate and the name of the examination should be written in the

due place of the answering sheet. The index number of the candidate

should be written in all papers used for answering the questions. No

candidate should write her/his name or any symbol of identification on the

answering sheets. Writing someone else's index number on one's

answering sheet is deemed misconduct and an examination offence.

Answering sheets without the registered number or illegible number will

be rejected.

1.12 The paper used for rough work and other writing papers should be

attached to the answering sheet. Irrelevant parts or mistakes made on the

answer sheet should be crossed out. Rough work should not be done on

the admission card, time table, question paper or Student Record Book.

Candidates who do not follow these instructions shall be deemed to have

breached the rules of the examination.

1.13 Candidates should behave in the examination hall, without disturbing the

supervisor, invigilators and other candidates. Silence should be preserved

in and out of the examination hall. Candidates will not be allowed to go out

of the examination hall temporarily except in an emergency situation. In

such situations, permission can be granted to go out temporarily with the

invigilator. The supervisor possesses the authority to expel those who do

not follow the aforementioned instructions. Talking with others except

with the supervisor or an invigilator in the examination hall at the time of

examination is completely prohibited. The attention of the supervisor or an

invigilator can be obtained by raising one's hand when a question arises.

1.14 Candidates should be suitably dressed for the exam, so that their attire

should not conceal their identity.

1.15 No candidate should reproduce a field book or a field programme or a

thesis as a whole or a part done by another. Only answers written by the

candidate herself/himself should be included in the examination.

1.16 The candidates should stop all work as soon as the signal to stop the

examination is given by the supervisor. The supervisor/ invigilator bear the

right of notifying the Examination Division about disobedient candidates if

these instructions are not followed.

1.17 No candidate should permit another to sit the examination on her/his

behalf, and no candidate is permitted to sit the examination on behalf of

someone else.

1.18 Candidates should be aware of the fact that the supervisor possesses sole

powers to question or to take statements from a candidate regarding any

matter that has arisen in the examination hall. The candidate cannot refuse

answering questions or signing the statement.

1.19 If the supervisor is convinced that a situation which leads to cancellation or

postponement of the examination has arisen, the supervisor will take steps

to report to the due authorities immediately having stopped the

examination and collected answer sheets immediately.

1.20 Candidates should hand over their answer sheets to the supervisor or an

invigilator themselves. Candidates should stay in their seats till the answer

sheets are collected. Answer sheets should not be handed over to workers

or any other person in the hall for any reason. A candidate does not have

the right to ask for the answer sheet once it has been handed over, for any

reason whatsoever.

1.21 No candidate can take her/his or someone else's answer sheets out of the

examination hall.

1.22 Candidates should be responsible not to keep any document or note or

equipment in their possession, which can be misused at the time of

examination. Further, candidates should not try to use any equipment or

document or note improperly. All candidates should be responsible not to

engage in examination misconduct and to avoid any such act which will

lead to suspicion of being engaged or engaged in examination misconduct.

1.23 In marking answer sheets, when more questions than the stipulated

number of questions are answered, only the due number of answers

according to the respective order of answering will be marked. E.g. the last

answer is not marked when an additional question apart from the due

number of questions is answered. Moreover, the examiner possesses the

authority of identifying an answer or part of it which is not needed to be

marked.

1.24 Sitting the examination by all candidates registered for the examination is

mandatory. If the candidate does not appear for the examination, she/ he

should seek permission of the Board of study and the Board of

Management within the relevant period of time, having submitted a

written appeal to the Appeals Board with acceptable reasons for not sitting

the examination with written proof. If a candidate cannot appear for a part

of examination, she/he should immediately inform of this in writing to the

SAR of the Examination Division and relevant proof sent within 48 hours,

via registered post.

1.25 If a candidate is not sitting the whole examination or a part of it due to

medical reasons, a Medical Certificate should be obtained having reported

to the Medical Officer of the Institute before the examination commences

or within the period of time the examination is being conducted.

1.26 If a candidate who has not sat the whole examination or a part of it has not

obtained the approval of the Board of study and the Board of Management

following the aforementioned instructions, sitting the said examination in

the next instance would be deemed as sitting a repeat examination.

1.27 If a candidate has not obtained approval of the Board of Study and the

Board of Management for not sitting the complete examination, she/ he

will not be entitled to get a class in completing the degree.

1.28 A candidate who fails to obtain a Medical Certificate from the Institute Medical Officer due to unavoidable circumstances should submit a valid Medical certificate obtained from the District Medical Officer of the candidate's residential area, a Consultant Physician or Government Ayurveda Hospital. The certificate must be certified by the Medical Officer of the Institute within 14 days from the due date of the examination. Medical Certificates issued by Western, Ayurvedic, or Homeopathy doctors in private practice are not accepted.

Examination Irregularities (Schedule - 04)

1.06 Improper behavior of disturbing the examination activities

1.07 Employing somebody else to sit the examination on one's behalf or sitting the examination on someone else's behalf.

1.08 Getting to know or trying to know the contents of a question paper through improper means

1.09 Encouraging, supporting or getting assistance to commit an examination irregularity

1.10 Influencing the examiner or other examination officers improperly

1.11 Not following or obeying the orders or instructions of the supervisor or disputing with the supervisor or the staff serving in the examination hall.

1.12 Taking mobile phones or technical gadgets of any sort in to the examination hall

3.0 Punishments for malpractice in Examinations. 3.01 Having unauthorized documents

Prohibition to sit examinations conducted by the Institute for a maximum

of two years or/ and sentence of other punishments according to the

recommendation of the Board of Management.

3.02 Copying / Plagiarism

Cancellation of candidacy and prohibition of sitting other examinations

held by the Institute for a maximum of three years or/ and sentence of

other punishments according to the Board of Management.

3.03 Having notes on the palm or any other part of the body or garments

Cancellation of candidacy and prohibition to sit examinations held by the

Institute for a maximum of three years or/ and sentence of other

punishments according to the Board of Management.

3.04 Cheating

Cancellation of candidacy, and prohibition to sit Institute examinations for

a specified period, and imposition of other punishments according to the

Board of Management.

3.05 Taking stationery items out of the examination hall

Cancellation of candidature and prohibition of sitting examinations

conducted by the Institute for a specified period of time decided on by the

Board of Management.

3.06 Misbehavior of causing disturbance in examination hall

Cancellation of candidacy and prohibition of sitting any examination in the

3.07 Impersonation

If a person sits the examination using another person's index number, or

allows another person to impersonate her/ him, it is a serious offence. In

such a situation both persons are punished. If the other person who has

sat the examination has not registered as a student in the Institute, the

normal laws of the country will be used punish her/ him.

In the case of a registered student, cancellation of candidacy and

prohibition of sitting Institute exams for a minimum of 5 years and

maximum of 10 years; and any other punishment imposed by the Board of

Management will be upheld.

3.08 Finding out contents of question paper or attempts to find the contents

of the question paper in an illegal way before the examination

Cancellation of candidacy and/ or any other punishment imposed by the

3.09 Supporting malpractice in examination or getting help of someone for

4.0 Compulsory Punishments All the candidates must be aware that according to the will of the Board of Management, all or several of the following compulsory punishments can be imposed:

Any misconduct/ malpractice/ misdemeanor or fault not discussed in this

session, but deemed to be malpractice by the Board of Management, will

be discussed and punishment meted out according to the decision of the

Board of Management.

6.0 Appeals made by the students who have been recommended to be punished for malpractice at examinations

Students who have been punished for malpractice at the examinations,

can forward their appeals to the Director. After directing it to the

committee investigating examination irregularities, the Director can ask

the committee to assemble and consider the relevant appeals and make

recommendations to the Board of Management.

In such cases, the decision taken by the Board of Management after

considering the recommendation of the Committee Investigating

Examination Irregularities will be the final decision.

Appeals against punishment can be made by the student within 14 days of

the receipt of the letter sent by the Administrative Officer of the

Examination Division informing her/ him of the punishment.

Candidates have no right to appeal after 14 days of receiving the letter.

STUDENT WELFARE DIVISION

The following student affairs are under the student affairs section. Student Affairs

1.1 Facilities provided for the students

1. Administering and maintaining the student hostels and canteens.

2. Dealing with matters related to calling in applications for the

hostels, selection of the hostellers and providing accommodation.

3. Providing financial assistance and scholarships.

4. Issuing train season tickets.

5. Facilitating the activities organized by students such as meetings

with guest speakers, seminars, dramas, films, etc.

6. Coordinating funds of the student organizations.

1.2 Scholarships 1.2.1 Mahapola Scholarships

Students who are eligible for this scholarship will receive a monthly sum of money, approved by the Institute/University Criteria, for a period of 10 months within an academic year.

1.2.2 Bursaries

University will call in for applications to select the students who are most suitable for bursaries those who do not receive Mahapola scholarships or any other scholarship can apply for this. Bursaries of approximately Rs. 3900/-, Rs.4000/- per month are awarded to students in need of financial assistance.

1.2.3 Piyasili Wickramarachchi Jayasekera Scholarship This scholarship is awarded in memory of Dr. G.P. Wickramarachchi the founder of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, by his

Note: The Director of the Institute can suspend a scholarship or award temporarily or permanently in the following instances.

Allocation of hostel places and rooms At the beginning of each academic year, student hostel committees headed by the warden and Senior Asst. Registrar/Student Welfare are appointed for each hostel. Hostel rooms are allocated by the warden/sub warden. Hostel facilities will be provided only for the students who are studying level one and level five. Students of other academic years will be considered on the basis of facilities available. Admission fee to the hostels is Rs.35/-. In addition a hall fee of Rs. 1200/= per academic year has to be paid at the beginning of each year. Except for medical reasons certified by the University/Institute Medical Officer students are not allowed to deposit hostel fees at a reduced rate for any other reason. The hostel fees have to be paid in full from the date they have been informed of their selection of hostel accommodations. If hostel fees are not paid on the required date an additional 25% fee will be charged. Although selected for hostel accommodation students may not be taken in to the hostel until the fees are paid. Students selected for hostel accommodation should occupy hostel on the date they are informed to do so. A student who does not report to the hostel within 7 days, will be replaced by another by student. The full time sub warden's duties include maintaining inventories for each room, supervision of cleaning, coordinating maintenance of buildings, maintenance and checking of student registers, checking on hostel security and unauthorized occupants, preventing and reporting on ragging in hostels. Hostels run by the Institute.

4. Female students should be in their rooms after 7.00 p.m. and male students

should be in their rooms after 10.00 p.m. They should also respect the

privacy of others.

5. Accommodation should not be provided to any outsider without permission

from the warden / sub warden.

6. Items in one room should not be moved to another without permission from

the warden / sub warden.

7. Furniture should not be left out in the balcony or outside the rooms exposed

to sun and rain.

8. When a room is occupied by more than one student, each of these students

are individually, and as a group, responsible for the protection of property in

the room. Students will be charged for loss, damage or destruction of

property.

9. Students should not keep any items that belong to the hostel in his/her

room, other than items given to him/her for his/her personal use.

10. Keys and other items given to hostellers should be returned to the warden /

sub warden when they leave rooms for vacation or on completion of their

stay in the hostel.

11. Supply of keys to replace lost keys and repair of broken keys are the

responsibility of the hosteller.

12. Students are not allowed to enter hostels during vacation.

13. Hostellers should not enter the hostel after taking intoxicants and bringing in

to the hostel of such intoxicants is strictly prohibited.

14. Hostellers who violate hostel rules and regulations may lose their hostel

accommodation.

Electrical appliances 1. Students are not allowed to keep kettles, electric cookers, irons, table lamps

etc. without prior permission from the Warden / Sub-warden.

The Warden/Sub-warden should get such items inspected by a university electrician before granting permission for their use.

Leave 1. No hosteller should leave the hostel before 6.00 am without the permission

from the Warden/ Sub Warden. Female students should not leave the hostel after 7.00 p.m. Male students should not leave the hostel after 10.00 p.m. without the permission from the Warden/ Sub Warden.

2. When returning to the hostel after taking leave the hostellers should handover their leave pass to the Warden.

Ragging Ragging in any form is prohibited in hostels or in the Institute premises. Collection of money from new entrants and participating or organizing any activity to harass the new entrants is not permitted.

Ragging, destruction of University/Institute property, forcible occupation of buildings, acts of violence and intimidation are now punishable as serious criminal offences by a special law known as the Ragging Act passed by Parliament in 1998. Unions/ Associations Students should not form any union or association in the hostels without permission from the warden or sub wardens. No speaker should be invited for lectures or meeting to the hostel without prior permission from the warden or sub wardens. Visitors 1. If required, a warden/sub warden has the authority to order a visitor to leave

the hostel at any time if the visitor misconducts himself/herself. 2. Female students should not allow any male visitors to enter their rooms

without permission from the warden/ sub-warden. Male students should not allow any female visitors to enter their rooms without permission from the warden /sub warden.

Clothes and cleaning of clothes 1. Clothes should not be spread on windows, doors, balconies or on furniture

for drying. 2. Clothes should not be left soaking in basins in bath-rooms. Lights Lights should be switched off when leaving rooms/ bathrooms/toilets. Garbage Garbage should be disposed only the bins provided, and it should not be left in corridors or thrown to the garden. Silence Silence should prevail in the hostels from 9.00pm to 6.00 am. All the students who accept hostel accommodation must follow the instructions given above.

Warden and Sub Wardens have the authority to punish those who violate these rules and regulations, in the following manner. a) charge a fine and /or b) Suspend for a hosteller from using the hostel facilities for a said time. If such

a punishment is given it should be recorded in his/her personal file and the parents or guardian should be informed.

STUDENT CENTRE Facilities are available for students in the same area in the canteen premises of the institute. Student may use this for resting or for engaging in indoor recreation activities during their free time. Canteen opening hours Weekdays/ Weekends 07.00 a.m. - 06.00 p.m. Dinner order must be submitted to the canteen before 02.00 p.m. MEDICAL CENTRE The institutional Medical centre provides and coordinates all health requirements of Institutional students. It is open from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. during week days except public holidays. The medical forms for all new entrants are issued from the medical centre. Completion of this form is mandatory for all students. It also provides treatments including dental care. When a student is absent from an examination or from tutorials, practicals or clinical sessions a medical certificate issued from the medical centre or a medical certificate issued by a qualified medical practitioner has to be certified by the Institutional Medical Officer before it is accepted. The Unit supports the Institute in producing capable and employable Ayurveda graduates who are empowered to contribute positively to the development of Ayurveda sector. The Unit organizes workshops, seminars, Ayurveda clinics and entrepreneurship programmes from time to time to develop abilities and skills vital for BAMS undergraduates to cope with the needs of current Ayurveda sector and to develop life-long learning ambitions. In addition, BAMS undergraduates who are looking forward to career opportunities in private sector including tourists’ hotels and other Panchakarma therapy centers will be benefited from the Unit by making them aware of these opportunities as well as by providing them with necessary guidance for placement.

Facilities for Sports and Cultural

Sports activities are organized by the Sports Committee. Every undergraduate is entitled to the facilities provided by the Institute and should make best use of such facilities.

The Institute has a gymnasium in which facilities for indoor games such as Volleyball, Netball, Table Tennis, Carrom, Chess and Weight Lifting etc. This gymnasium is open for students to use from 08.00 a.m. to 07.00 p.m. on weekdays. Students are also encouraged to go to the Kelaniya University and get involved in sports activities at the main campus.

Organization of sports activities at the main University is done by its Physical Education Unit. Sports conducted by the physical Education Unit include Volleyball, Badminton, Football, Netball, Hockey, Elle, Table Tennis, Cricket, and Carrom etc. BAMS students also can participate the training programmes in these events. Every year a special programme is conducted to introduce sports activities for new entrants. All new entrants are requested to fill in New Entrant's Sports Information form and submit it to the Director, Physical Education Unit.

Information and instructions of sports programmes and trainings can be obtained from the Career Guidance Division in the students Centre Building. Facilities for sports in the main campus are being expanded and at present two playgrounds, a gymnasium, fitness Investigation Unit and a complete Exercise Unit are being run under the supervision of the Physical Education Unit.

GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI AYURVEDA TEACHING HOSPITAL

Gampaha Wickramarachchi Sidhayurveda Medical College was established in 1929 by Ayurveda Cakrawartipandit G.P. Wickramarachchi with the aims of improving Ayurveda Medicine and provided treatment freely. In 1984 it was upgraded to the hospital and on 27th February, 2008 it was affiliated to the Department of Ayurveda. At present this hospital has four wards that can accommodate 120 patients. In addition there is an out patients department and a pharmacy.

This Ayurvedic Teaching hospital provides Teaching and training facilities to undergraduate Medical students of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute.
