1. GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1. AustriaThe democratic republic of Austria is a federal state with 9 provinces: Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna. The overall area of Austria amounts to 83,858 km2 and the population numbers about 8 million inhabitants. Austria is a member state of the European Union and of the United Nations.

1.2. The City of SalzburgThe city of Salzburg, capital of the federal province with the same name, is situated in a basin surrounded by limestone mountains to the south and to the west, and by hilly country with many lakes to the north and east. The city was the centre of an ecclesiastical principality for almost a thousand years. The architecture of the city is largely characterized by magnificent buildings and large squares in the old town centre created during the Baroque period. During the 20th century Salzburg became renowned as a festival, art and congress city and also an important centre of business, transport and administration. The city has about 150,000 inhabitants. The favourable geographical situation of the city of Salzburg as an axis linking north and south can be traced back historically to the 8th century. It goes without saying that contacts with the European area are fos-tered; the idea of bringing the nations of Europe together has a centuries’ old tradition in Salzburg. Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, the geniuscomposer who was born here, travelled from his home town to cities such as London, Paris, Milan, Naples, Prague and Mannheim and introduced a European dimension into musical life in Salzburg. In the following century music festivals were organized at irregular intervals which culminated in the founding of the Salzburg Festival in 1920. Salzburg thus opened itself not only to the whole of Europe but also on an international scale. Fostering and promoting encounters, and cooperationin the fine arts were thereby further intensified and became more international.

2. MOZARTEUM UNIVERSITY SALZBURG

2.1. The History of the Mozarteum University SalzburgThe Salzburg Cathedral Music Association was founded in 1841 to-gether with the Mozarteum educational institution. The statutes at that time stated that “the Mozarteum is the institution founded by the Cath-edral Music Association for the dignified preservation of the memory of Mozart for all time in the city of his birth and where music is to be taught and practised.” Forty years later the school was taken over by the Inter-national Mozarteum Foundation which had set itself the aim of creating an academy of music, publishing Mozart’s entire works and building a concert hall, as well as setting up a library and archives. From 1910 to 1914 the “Mozart House”, designed by the architect Richard Berndl in the style of late Munich historicism, ornamented with motifs from the local Baroque tradition and art nouveau, was built in the Schwarzstrasse 26-28. The building combines teaching and archive rooms, two concert halls: the Great Hall and the smaller Wiener Saal.In 1914 the Mozarteum was granted the status of a conservatoire sub-ject to public law. The artistic profile of the institution was dominated for decades by Bernhard Paumgartner. He supervised the transition of the Mozarteum to an institution supported by the state. In 1953 it was transformed into an academy of music and dramatic art; in 1970 it was raised to the status of a high school of music and dramatic art. In 1998 it achieved university status and became the Mozarteum University Salz-burg.The Mozarteum is a university of the arts: music, drama and the visual arts are taught. Various courses are offered, leading to diplomas, Bach-elor and Master degrees as well as doctoral studies in 13 departments. Besides the many different kinds of artistic activities the departments are also dedicated to academic research and developments in educational theory. About 1,500 students from all over the world are taught annually by about 400 lecturers. Many graduates of the Mozarteum University achieved worldwide re-nown, for instance Herbert von Karajan, Thomas Bernhard, Thomas Zehetmair and the Hagen Quartet, to name just a few.

3.6. Medical CarePlease check whether your health insurance in your home country is also valid in Austria. If not, you must take out health insurance in Austria. We recommend taking out insurance in Austria even if your health insur-ance is valid in Austria because it makes the bureaucracy much easier. For foreign students from countries which are members of the European Union it is sufficient to bring a European Health Insurance Card. In case of need this has to be submitted to the relevant doctor.

Guests from other countries with which there is a social insurance agreement with Austria can have a care certificate issued from their health insurance in their home country. With this care certificate you can collect an Austrian certificate of illness from the Salzburg Gebiets-krankenkasse which can then be submitted to the relevant doctor. In the case of private insurance it is important to check whether it also covers health services in Austria.

The Salzburg Gebietskrankenkasse offers the possibility of taking out health insurance (individual student insurance and voluntary individual insurance). In case of interest please apply directly to the Gebietskran-kenkasse:Address: Engelbert-Weiss-Weg 10, [email protected].: +43 / (0) 662 8889-0
