From The President

Greetings Shipmates. Sherry and I are looking forward to seeing you this September. It seems

like it has been two years since Sacramento.

We have been plugging away at Anchor Engineering. I actually got to incorporate some

sustainable concepts into a few of the Sub Divisions I have designed lately. Cities are slow to get on the

band wagon but persistence prevailed. We are getting to use grassed swales instead of having to channel

the storm water in concrete pipes. I have to keep the velocities below 5 feet per second to prevent

erosion but have been able to do so on every design so far. This allows more water to soak in and

replenish the water table.

Congratulations to Barrie Gibson on his recent hospital ordeal. Welcome back. We were

worried.

I hope you are all making plans to be in St. Louis. It should be a good visit. See you all there.

Dreams of happy days when just a kid. A couple of my boys are gone

‘OK, OK, Yeah! Whatcha say?” And wandered down to you.

“Its eleven-thirty, and I’ve got the MID?” Although I don’t approve of it

Feels like I’ve been awake a year There’s nothing I can do.

Like I’ve got a hang-over from beer;

Sleepy, not enthused about a thing But I’ll tell you-while they worked for me

Eyes keep closing, fumbled my shoestring; Nothing was too hard,

I wonder if civilians ever know They always jumped to my command

How lucky they are to have no MIDS to go Every man was starred.

“Where in the Hell’s my other sock?”

Can’t wash, all the washrooms are locked. I really hate to lose them Dave,

Got to conserve fresh water, you know, As they were tried and true.

They don’t save any MIDS watches though, I know they will work as hard down there

0900 – 1500 – St. Louis City Tour ($65.00 per person)

Enjoy a guided tour of St. Louis with a professional Discover St. Louis guide sharing

all that St. Louis has to offer. Take in Laclede’s Landing, a revitalized 19th century

warehouse district with cobblestone streets and cast-iron street lamps. Enjoy the

St. Louis downtown area including views of the Gateway Arch; the Old Courthouse;

Busch Stadium, home of the beloved St. Louis Cardinals; Union Station; local

neighborhoods of Soulard and Lafayette Square. Visit and tour the Gateway Arch

and take a tram ride to the top for breathtaking views of St. Louis and surrounding

areas, including the Mighty Mississippi River, or enjoy the movie option “Monument

to a Dream,” which chronicles the Arch construction. Enjoy lunch at Favazza’s

Restaurant located in the famed Italian neighborhood known to locals as “The Hill.”

Lunch will be chicken parmesan served with salad, Italian bread, dessert and coffee,

tea or water. Round out the day with a guided tour of the Cathedral Basilica housing

over 83,000 hand laid mosaics on its ceilings and walls and a drive through the Gem

of St. Louis, Forest Park. Home to the 1904 World’s Fair, Forest Park today boasts

the St. Louis Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum and the MUNY theater. Cost is $65

This evening, step into another world when you arrive at Roemer Topf German

Restaurant. Located in the quaint German community of Mascoutah, Illinois, you will

be amazed at the décor and the staff. The group will enjoy a special variety meal

with schnitzel, wurst and chicken breast along with red cabbage, sauerkraut and

three delicious German desserts. While dining, and after, you will enjoy an

accordionist in lieder hosen who will play and lead the group in a fun sing-a-long.

at Pearl Harbor 70th

Memorial. I attended and Represented the USS

CHICAGO CA29 after all these years, when I heard the USS PATTERSON called out I made it a point

to find the shipmate and asked him about the night June 1942 when both ships approached ship to ship

and in a pitch black night were trying to signal the correct recognition signal. It was a scary moment if

they were friend or foe. Lucky after we fired on the Patterson and they fired on us it was over and we are

USS PATTERSON DD392 (right) and USS BLUE DD387 (on the left alongside), removing crew from the

I want to notify you of the death of USS CHICAGO Chief Petty officer James Monroe Sims on February 25

2012. - he was my cousin and he cherished the days in the Navy and often attended reunions and was secretary

of the reunion group for many years. He kept a picture of the ship on a wall in his house forever.

Thank you all for your prayers. Surgery was on the 15th

of February, went very well.

I was discharged on the 21st of February and I am at home recuperating. I will go back to Chicago on 8 March

for a post op check up. I am getting around cautiously but am really glad to be home. My son Chris and his wife

take good care of me and I sit around and do my exercises and stuff while they are at work. God bless you all.

Editor; Barrie had lung surgery.

I did not get one comment about the photo on page 5 of the Winter News Letter. I said there were two SC-1

aircraft in the photo. Wrong, there are three. After the war, the aircraft and catapults removed and the ships

were converted to helicopters by 1949.

I have had several inquiries about Commanding Officers of CA136 and CG11. Here is what I have found.

Thank you for the opportunity to include my request in the upcoming issue of the USS Chicago’s Newsletter. Following is my draft request:

History researcher seeks information about the experience of Chicago crewmembers during the Pueblo Crisis of 1968 for prospective writing project. There is little information available in the public domain on the details of the naval response to the seizure of the Pueblo, including timelines of what ships were where at the start of the crisis, when they arrived in the Sea of Japan, what the operations of the ships were once there, when they departed, and any lessons learned from the experience. Appreciate sharing of any recollections about this crisis that would help build a picture of what the Chicago and her crew did, insights about the ship’s capabilities at the time, operations in the Sea of Japan, life aboard, dealing with the weather, thoughts about involvement in the crisis, the North Koreans you might have faced, prospects for escalation, etc. Also welcome is any information on other Navy vessels, aviation and shore stations involved in the response and their operations, as well as anything about (South or North) Korean or Russian military/naval involvement and activities noted during the Chicago’s participation in the crisis.

The above photo was taken at Mare Island Shipyard, Vallejo California on 14 December 1942 before repair of

battle damage.

The circles mark the locations of some of the 45 shell hits she received on 13 November during the Battle of

Guadalcanal. During the day prior to the night surface gun battle, a Japanese torpedo aircraft crashed in to her

after superstructure, killing 35 men.

The night engagement resulted in 189 killed, wounded or missing.

CA38, that analyzes every hit, photos and charts of the ships location.

The poem TO DAVY JONES—FROM UNCLE SAM, by J. D. Byers was written two weeks after The Battle

of Guadalcanal, in Noumea, New Caledonia, a forward support base where ships stopped for emergency repairs.

The photo on the next page was taken in Sydney where the CA29 had a temporary bow installed for her trip to

Mare Island Shipyard, Vallejo, California. This damage occurred on 9 August during the Battle of Savo Island.
