    Introduction

Vienna has a lot to offer its visitors! The sheer number of art, cultureand leisure activities available in this city often makes it difficult towork out which ones are the best. Considerations like, What are thebest places to go for good food and drink at affordable prices?,

Which sights are a must see?, or Whats the hottest club in the cityright now? often cant be answered without a certain amount ofinsider knowledge, making it hard not to get caught in the classictourist traps. This brochure, however, will help you avoid these places.

This brochure is no classic travel guide, but has been deliberately puttogether for people who are also interested in city life off the beaten

track. Of course, traditional tourist destinations have not been entirelyleft out of this guide, but it also provides alternatives: places the Vien-nese love to go to spend their free time. Also, what was important to uswas to make sure you get good value for money in these places.

The final decision about what to see and what to leave out in Vienna isup to you. In any case, we hope you have fun and enjoy your stay!

    Sightseeing

All of the large cities in the world are divided into different districts.Vienna has 23 of them, with the first district located right in the centreand the other districts fanning out from it. The individual districts havenames such as Innere Stadt (1st district) or Leopoldstadt (2nddistrict). However, in most cases they are designated by their numbers

and not by their names. Each municipal district has its special characterand atmosphere.So-called no go areas, which can be found in many cities, do notexist in Vienna!

Sights in the first districtVienna is quite rightly considered as a large open-air museum.

Numerous sights are conveniently located right in the city centre, i.e.in the first municipal district, which is the oldest part of the city.

A ride on the 1A bus line not only allows you to explore Viennasfirst district for little money, but also gives you the chance to gain agood impression of its residents.

    Off the beaten tracks

Vienna has a lot more to offer than its traditional tourist hotspots. If you leave the well-trodden tourist paths, you will discover manynew and interesting facets of the city. Anyone interested in getting toknow the true character of a city will often find it reflected in exactly

    these areas.

Old AKH (General Hospital) University Campushttp://campus.univie.ac.atThe grounds of todays university campus in Viennas 9th district known as the Old AKH originally belonged to what used to be theVienna General Hospital. Today, the campus accommodates parts of

the University of Viennas faculties of Arts and Social Sciences. Andsince university students dont just pursue their studies but also love toparty, a lively caf and restaurant scene has emerged in this area. Insummer, this pleasant oasis of green right in the heart of the city is theideal place to relax or have a picnic.

A more remote part of the campus houses the seemingly forgottenFools Tower, which was built in 1748. It was the first specialist facilityfor the mentally ill in Europe. Today it accommodates the FederalMuseum of Pathology and Anatomy. With its strict geometric shapeand lack of any adornment it belongs to Viennas less-knownarchitectural treasures.

Freihausviertelwww.einkaufsstrassen.at/freihausviertel (German)The Freihausviertel is an area located in the 4th municipal districtsurrounding Schleifmhlgasse and the neighbouring streets betweenWiedner Hauptstrasse, Naschmarkt and Karlsplatz. In the past tenyears, the Freihausviertel has become a flourishing part of Vienna, providing a home to the citys contemporary art scene. Galleries,

fashion designers, a unique flower shop, antique shops and a colourfulmix of bars, cafs and restaurants (see page 61) have turned the areainto a lively and vibrating neighbourhood! Its close proximity to theNaschmarkt also contributed to the areas upswing. The area was named after the so-called Freihaus, the oldest socialhousing complex in Vienna, which used to be situated there.

The Point of Sale, a great place for breakfast, is situated in theFreihausviertel (for more detailed information see page 59).

KarmeliterviertelThe Karmeliterviertel in Viennas 2nd municipal district has also experi-enced a boom in the past few years, resulting in a thriving gastronomicand cultural scene. MarketsNaschmarktwww.wienernaschmarkt.eu (German)Although Naschmarkt today is an attraction rather than a market, youcan buy anything there, from fruit, vegetables, bakery products, fish andmeat to international products from different countries. Nowadays, thenumerous gourmet temples increasingly outnumber traditional market

stalls, so that, due to its wealth of trendy eateries, Naschmarkt hasdeveloped into a hip hotspot of the city. If you want to experience theNaschmarkt as it used to be, grab a bite at Zur eisernen Zeit, a typicalViennese restaurant full of atmosphere and Naschmarkt nostalgia!

A must-see event at Naschmarkt is the flea market held everySaturday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Virtually everything is on sale here!

But be careful: All that glitters is not gold! If you dont watch out, youmay be easily cheated out of your money.

BrunnenmarktSomewhat less mainstream and less trendy, the multi-culti market inViennas district of Ottakring (16th municipal district) is a good alterna-tive to the increasingly commercial and stylish Naschmarkt. Its mix of artists and Turkish and Greek stall holders lend the market its uniquecharacter. If you want to venture into one of the rougher parts of Vienna, we recommend a visit to Brunnenmarkt. Also worth a visit:Viennas legendary Turkish restaurant Kent or Restaurant World(for further information see page 56 onwards).

Every year in mid-May, the area around Brunnenmarkt houses theSoho in Ottakring arts and culture festival (www.sohoinottakring.at).

    Nightlife

Whilst Viennas nightlife was something of a non-starter during the80s, the early 90s saw a small but first-rate clubbing scene develop. This was driven mostly by the success of Viennas electronic scene (forexample Kruder and Dorfmeister), which still dominates in many clubs. Here are some pointers to the most important clubs in the city!

Adriawien1., Donaukanal, Tel. 0660/312 47 03, www.adriawien.atEven though its not advisable to take a swim near this beach bar, this relaxed beach spot with its summerly atmosphere, cocktail bar andchill out music right in the city is predestined to brighten ones mood.

Arena3., Baumgasse 80, Tel. 01/798 85 95, www.arena.co.at (German)After its bloody decades as an abattoir, the time had come to makesomething out of the Arena. Originally taken over by squatters, theArena then became a semi-autonomous cultural center and since thenhas become THE cult location for punk, rock, hardcore, alternative, indie, ska, electronic and pretty much any music guaranteed to put youin the mood to party!

The water of the Danube flowing past the Badeschiff lookssomewhat uninviting when compared to the swimming pool on the topdeck. The bottom deck, in what used to be the barges hold, rocks to

    electro, techno and indie beats.
