Prag ist eine kalte Stadt im Winter. Es ist kalt, schmutzig, und manchmal einfach rau. Es kann auch angenehm sein, sogar begrüßend, aber nur für den richtigen Preis. Ich war während „Interterm“ mit einer Gruppe Studenten von einer anderen Universität dort. Die beste Methode dahin zu fahren ist über München, mit dem Zug. Es ist fast immer billiger nach München zu fliegen als direkt nach Prag, die Hauptstadt der Tschechischen Republik.

An irgendeiner Stelle im Zug kurz bevor wir Prag erreichten wurde ich aufgeregt einen neuen Ort zu besuchen, irgendwo ganz neu. Ich fühlte mich immer noch etwas unruhig, weil ich die lokale Sprache nicht konnte. Voller

Hoffnung und nervösen Erwartungen, kam ich mit den anderen Studenten aus dem Zug, und wir folgten zusammen unserem Professor, bis wir endlich im Hotel waren.

Am Vorabend gab es in Prag viel Schnee und Eis, und deswegen war es gefährlich zu fahren. Wir sahen sogar einige Autounfälle. Auch die Leute waren ziemlich unfreundlich, wahrscheinlich wegen des kalten Wetters.

Die Fußwege waren schmutzig, denn sie kümmerten sich nicht darum; es ist zu gefährlich zu fahren. Nachdem wir das Hotel verlassen hatten wurde sofort klar was es in Prag zu mögen gibt. Trotz der unhöflichen Leute, des schlechten Wetters, und des Drecks gibt es

eine Sache die alles ablöst; Prag ist total anders! Es ist gar nicht wie Paris, oder Berlin, oder London, oder Madrid, oder Amsterdam, oder Rom, oder Wien.

Diese Städte sind unter der EU homogenisiert worden, eingedrungen worden, und teilweise auch amerikanisiert worden. Heutzutage sind sie einfach „plain vanilla“, schöne europäischen Städte. Prag ist nicht so. Prag ist ganz anders.

Algunos piensan que las papitas son una botana que sólo se usa con salsas frías como crema y especias y salsa de tomate o con queso que se calienta. Pero lo que es costumbre aquí en los estados no es el fin en México. Aparte de usar lo que es costumbre aquí en América hay una solución más rápida: las salsas como chamoy y salsa picante. Estas salsas no están tan espesas como las a que estamos acostumbrados. Estas dos salsas son bien líquidas y es más fácil ponerlas directamente sobre las papitas en vez de poner la salsa en un plato hondo separado. Se agregan estas salsas a las papitas porque les dan aún más sabor. El chamoy es un tipo de mezcla que tiene un sabor agridulce que se hace de fruta, tal como ciruelas, con especias y vinagre. Es bien delicioso con papitas que tienen muchas especies. Es fácil encontrar salsas picantes aquí pero no hay salsas tan deliciosas como las salsas picantes de México. Las salsas picantes son muy líquidas también pero pican más que las salsas aquí. Estas salsas son perfectas para usar con papitas más sencillas sin especias. Las papitas son una botana bien popular, y es normal que desde los niños hasta los abuelos coman papitas con salsa. Las papitas con estas salsas son botanas deliciosas que se pueden preparar cualquier día.

thicker substances like sour cream with certain spices, tomato salsa, and warm cheese dips. Sauces that are customary to have with chips here in the United States are not the same in Mexico. Apart from the time it takes to prepare these dips there is a faster solution: they are the sauces referred to as “chamoy” and hot sauce.

These sauces are not as thick and can be considered very runny. They are not put into a bowl for dipping but are poured directly onto the chips. This adds to the taste of the chips when you eat them. “Chamoy” is a type of sauce that is tangy and typically used on chips that already have plenty of spices already. This sauce is made through pickled fruit such as plums along with other spices and vinegar.

Another type of sauce is the hot sauce. It is easy to find hot sauce here in the states but it is nowhere near as delicious as the hot sauce they provide in Mexico. The sauce is also runny but it has much more kick to the flavor. It is considerably spicy and typically used on plain chips without many spices added. These chips with sauces are very popular snacks, and anyone from kids to grandparents enjoys this delicious delight.

Prag ist ursprünglich, mittelalterlich und es hängt durch ein Gewinde an seiner unbeschädigten Geschichte und Kultur. Doch natürlich gibt es an jeder Ecke einen McDonalds und in jeder Straße einen Starbucks. Aber wenn das eine amerikanisierte Stadt zeigen soll, ist Prag genau die gleiche Stadt wie Kansas City.

Prag war einmal das Zentrum der Gesellschaft Europas. Prag war eine Handelstadt und eine wichtige Stadt für Politik, und die Altlasten von damals sind immer noch zu sehen, von der berühmten Prager Burg wo der Prager Fenstersturz stattfand bis zum alten Marktplatz wo Kaufmänner des Mittelalters ihre Produkte verkauften. In Prag gibt es auch genug Museen mit verschiedenen Themen, wofür man Prag besuchen würde. Es gibt ein Museum für Kommunismus, ein Museum für mittelalterliche Folter, ein Museum für Sex, und auf jeden Fall auch Museen für Geschichte und so weiter. Es ist eine interessante Stadt, egal ob man durch die Museen und Kaufhäuser und Galerien bummeln will, oder einfach lieber durch die altmodischen, gebeugten, unvoraussagbare Feldsteinstraßen wandern möchte. Die Straßen sind manchmal am Anfang breit genug für eine Parade und am Ende zu eng für einen Taxi. Doch, Prag ist eine Stadt mit einem besonderen Humor.

Der Kalte Krieg war für Prag kein Fest, und in den folgenden Jahren des Kommunismus hat die Tschechische Republik deswegen viel ökonomisches Pech gehabt, wie auch viele ehemalige sowjetische Länder. Aber für die

Amerikaner ist Luxus leben der größte Vorteil! Es gibt Klubs, Kneipen, schicke Restaurants, und extravagante Geschäfte, alle mit einem schönen Wechselkurs. Man kann ungefähr vier Liter lokales, weltbekanntes, echt tschechisches Bier für ungefähr sieben Euro kaufen, wenn man einen Sonderpreis irgendwo auf der Hauptstraße findet. Das ist vielleicht nicht so überraschend, aber wenige

von uns haben genug feines Bier geschluckt um pingelig zu sein. Außer der billigen Getränke kann man auch eine schöne Mahlzeit mit vier Gängen für ungefähr zwölf Euro kaufen, wenn man ein schlecht verstecktes Restaurant aussucht, irgendwo in der Innenstadt. Prag ist auch eine feine Kunststadt. Es gibt Theater, Kirchen voller Gemälde und Skulpturen, Galerien mit

täglichen Ausstellungen, und es gibt Konzerte fast jeden Tag des Jahres. Übrigens, ist es in Prag fast unmöglich sich zu langweilen, weil es in der Stadt so viel zu tun und sehen gibt.

Meine Reise nach Prag hat mich mit so vielen schönen Erfahrungen und Bilder gelassen, und ich hätte gern für alle meine schöne Zeit dort zweimal so viel Geld ausgegeben. Sie ist eine Stadt mit etwas für jeden, aber sie ist nicht die Lieblingsstadt von jedem. Wenn man den Glanz von Paris, oder die Geschichte von London, oder den Lebensstil von Amsterdam, oder den einfachen Aufbau von Berlin, oder die Biergarten von München sucht, wird man enttäuscht sein. Prag ist eine eigene Art von Stadt, einzigartig und unbeschädigt, und sie wird bald vom EU Einfluss aufgesaugt werden. Bald wird sie eine weitere Stadt auf der Liste sein. Also sehen Sie Prag sobald Sie können, aber seien Sie vorsichtig.

is cold, dirty, and at times just plain rude. It can be hospitable, even welcoming, but only for the right price. I was there during Interterm with a group of students from another school. The best way to get to Prague is not directly, but via Munich, Germany. It is almost always cheaper to fly there and take a train to Prague, the capital of neighboring Czech Republic, than to fly to Prague directly from the United States.

At some point on the train, as we approached our destination, I grew excited about visiting a new location, some place different. Still, I couldn’t help but feel uneasy about visiting a country where I had no grasp whatsoever of the language. Full of hope and nervous expectation, I stepped off the train with my fellow students, and together we fumbled our way out of the train station, all the while following our professor and not stopping to look around until we reached our hotel. The day before, a cold front had dumped snow all over the city, making roads hazardous (we witnessed several wrecks while we were there), people grouchy (due to the sub-freezing weather, no doubt), and sidewalks dirty (they don’t bother clearing the snow because it’s too dangerous to drive). After leaving the hotel for sightseeing, it was immediately clear what there is to

love about Prague. Despite all the bad weather, nasty people, and messiness, there is one simple thing that redeems it all; Prague is different! It isn’t like Paris, or Berlin,

or London, or Madrid, or Amsterdam, or Rome, or Vienna. Those cities have been invaded and besieged by westernization and homogenization under the European Union. Those cities are just plain vanilla, beautiful European cities. Prague is something else. It is primal, it is Medieval, and it is hanging by a thread to its unspoiled culture and history. Of course there is a McDonalds on every corner and a

Starbucks on every street, but if that is the mark of a westernized city then clearly Prague is just the same as suburban Kansas City.

Prague was once the center of all important business in Europe. It used to be a center of trade and of politics, and the relics of that era remain, from the famous Prague Castle where the Defenestration of Prague took place to the Old Town Square where middle age merchants sold their goods. There are also enough museums to cover just about every topic for which one would want to visit the city. There is a museum of Communism, a museum of medieval torture, a museum of sex, and of course museums of history and so on. It is an interesting city, whether you want to walk through museums and shops and exhibits, or whether you prefer to just wander through the ancient, winding, unpredictable, cobblestone streets that are sometimes wide enough for parades at one end and too

narrow for cars at the other. Indeed, Prague is a city with a sense of humor.

The Cold War was not particularly friendly to the Czech Republic, and in the aftermath of Communism the country has suffered economic hardship, as have many former Soviet republics. For Americans, living the high life in Prague is the silver lining! There are clubs, bars, fancy restaurants, posh stores, all with an incredible exchange rate. You can get about a gallon of local, world famous Czech beer for about ten dollars if you find a drink special in a bar off the main strip. That might not impress you, but few among us have tasted enough fine beer to be picky. Besides the cheap booze, you can get a classy four-course meal in a nice restaurant for about $15, if you search for a hidden gem away from the downtown. Prague is also a city of the arts. There are theaters, churches full of paintings and sculptures, galleries with daily exhibits, and there are concerts almost every day of the year. Needless to say, it is difficult to be bored when there is so much to see and do.

My trip to Prague left me with so many fantastic snapshots and memories, and for as much enjoyment as I had I would have gladly spent twice the money. It is a city with something for almost everyone, but it is not everyone’s favorite city. If you are hoping for the glamour of Paris, or the history of London, or the lifestyle of Amsterdam, or the simple layout of Berlin, or the biergartens of Munich, you will be disappointed. Prague is its own kind of city, unique and unblemished, and soon it will be overrun by EU homogenization. Soon, it will be just another city on the list. So see it while you can, but be prepared.
