From The Principal’s Desk

WELCOME Haere mai ki te kura o Bellevue and welcome to the following students and their families/whānau. Great to have you in the Bellevue Learning Community:

Jeeva Shah in Room 2 and Samuel Smedinge in Room 9.

This term we continue to promote takohanga or responsibility. By recognising and affirming others when we notice them doing the following things, we are helping them to grow their gift of responsibility:-

Always work hard to be the best we can be

Set a good example for others to see

Do our best for success

Accept responsibility for what we say and do

Do not blame others

Never give up

Follow through and finish what we start If we are demonstrating takohanga we are being accountable for the decisions we make, our personal actions and behaviours. Responsibility is not about blaming others or making excuses. It is about owning what we do and say. It is also about fixing up our mistakes and learning from these.

Bellevue Sports News

Each year the school undertakes a whole school emergency drill where we practice evacuating all the students and reuniting them with their parents or emergency release adults. This year our whole school evacuation is on Friday 3 November. While this practice exercise may be a little inconvient for some families/whānau, it is really important that the children, their teachers and our community know what to do if the situation should arise where we have to evacuate from the school. To help us be prepared for an emergency should it occur during school time, we need to have current contact numbers and release adults who can collect your child during an evacuation or evacuation practise. At your Three Way Conferences you will have been given the contact details we have for you/your family and the current emergency release adults you have listed. In an emergency these are the only people that we will release your child to. Please check these details carefully and let us know of any changes. We especially recommend that you have at least one emergency release adult who is on this side of the gorge, as in an earthquake it may be that people working in the city will be unable to get through the gorge.

To help us keep everyone safe in any emergency situation please check that the school has the correct emergency

contact numbers and release adults details for your child/ren. Please let us know of any changes that occur

throughout the year as this happens.

PSW Regional Sportsfest The Year 6 netball teams participated in the Netball Tournament of the Regional Sportsfest at Haitaitai courts yesterday. 'It was a very fun day with lots of sunshine. The girls got very tired as we had to play hard for five games. We realised that sport isn't just about winning but it is also about having fun. Yesterday was a great day because we got to play netball all day. Bellevue Flames were placed third in their section and the Bellevue Zebras were placed 6th in their section of the Year 6 grade.' By Maia and Annaliese A big thank you to all of the parents who supported on the day with transport, coaching, umpiring and supervision. Photo: Bellevue Flames with their third place trophy.

Remember that everyone needs to wear a sunhat when they are out-

side during Terms 1 and 4 at Bellevue School - even on cloudy days.

We also encourage children to wear sunblock and sunglasses to pro-

tect themselves from harmful UV rays during these summer months.

This message comes from our Regional Health Nurse:-

Be Sun Smart - slip, slop, slap and wrap

Research has shown that too much UV radiation causes sunburn,

which can lead to skin damage (including skin cancer) and eye

damage. Make sun protection a life-long habit, starting as young as

possible, to reduce your risk. In New Zealand from September to April,

even on cooler and/ or cloudy days, UV radiation levels can be high

enough to cause sunburn. Reduce your risk by using the slip, slop,

slap, and wrap steps recommended to protect your skin and eyes.

http://www.sunsmartschools.co.nz/teachers/curriculum-resources

Next year there will be Bellevue School sunhats available for purchase.

Play Pod Equipment

iwi = tribe, people (at a gathering) pronunciation = ee-wee Tokomaha ngā tāngata o tērā iwi. What a lot of people in that tribe. Ko Kai Tahu te iwi. Kai Tahu is the tribe. Ko Ngāti Hāmoa te iwi. I am Samoan.

Thank you

Special thanks to…

Murray Charlesworth who collected carpet from Carpet Court in Lower Hutt and delivered it for the Play Pod. Thanks to Carpet Court too. Ross at the local New World who donated a large number of amazing cardboard shapes and items for use in the production and the Play Pod; also to Anne Smith and Karen who did a few trips back and forth to collect these items. Kendra for her wonderful organisation of the Netball trip yesterday and to Mo, Jennifer, Jo, Kanoknart, Shirleen, Lisa and Sally Jobson for transporting, supervising, umpiring and coaching on the Netball trip yesterday.

Thank you to all the people who have started to bring along items for our Play Pod, and to the student council who approached local businesses to donate items. This week we have added a shell shaped sandpit, some more foam noodles, some large pipes, further large cardboard tubes and carpet off-cuts . Please note:- We are very keen to add to the items that enable our students to engage in creative play at lunch breaks. If you have items you no longer use that we could use in creative play on the hard court area during breaks eg: foam noodles, old pots/pans, tarpaulins, carpet squares, plastic tubs, dress ups, lengths of fabric… we would love to use these. You can look on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqi1KyJJeKg for how this works.

Bellevue School Golden Jubilee

Thank you to all the students, parents and staff who have been out collecting stones to enable all children to paint at least five stones to concrete into a colourful border along the side of our pedestrian entrance way to school. We hope to have this completed in time for our Jubilee celebrations. We plan to have a day or two where Feta and some adult helpers concrete in our students stone artworks once these are completed by our young artists.

Put this date in your calendar!
