The New Urtext Series for Piano Teaching

Die neue Urtext-Reihe für den Klavierunterricht

Volume 2

Haydn – Mozart – Cimarosa

Band 2 enthält u.a.

Volume 2 combines some of Haydn’s easiest piano sonatas with pieces from Mozart’s London Sketchbook and lesser-known sonatas by Cimarosa. These complement Haydn’s and Mozart’s works, both stylistically and technically.

• Bach, Menuett in G (BWV Anh. 116)• Mozart, Menuett in F (KV 5)• Schumann, Wilder Reiter (op. 68/8)

Urtext Primo – a perfect approach to learning piano repertoire

With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition bridges the transition from piano tutor book to reper-toire studies. In many of the piano methods used internationally, this moment arises somewhere after two to three

years of learning. This is a moment when young pianists are able to play some of the following works:

• Bach, Menuet in G (BWV Anh. 116)• Mozart, Menuett in F (K. 5)• Schumann, Wilder Reiter (Op. 68 No. 8)

Taking this level of attainment as a starting point, each Urtext Primo book offers selected works by three different composers whose works students and adult learners might find useful in their own studies. The pieces’ range of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo series from many other anthologies.

Selection of repertoireThe selection of repertoire in each Urtext Primo book is based on a thematic idea that links the three com-posers whose music is featured. The repertoire takes into account not only pieces from the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons.

Volume 3 consists of well known keyboard works by Beethoven and lesser known music by Schubert and Hummel. In addition to Beethoven’s indispensable ‘For Elise’ the volume also presents lesser-known pieces such as Hummel’s highly educational and eminently playable ‘Six pièces très faciles’ and his delightful ‘Tyrolienne variée’.

The final section of the commentary contains aRepertoire chart in which the current pieces have been graded into three categories, from A (the easiest) to C (the most difficult) such as the Repertoire chart in Urtext Primo volume 3.

Sonata in dC. 9 D. Cimarosa

Practice Tip Often, the melodic line can give an indication of how to articulate unmarked notes, for instance in Schubert’s Ecossaise D 679/2 (in this case with an upbeat) as shown above.

Domenico Cimarosa was born in 1749 in Aversa in the kingdom of Naples. He received his musical training between 1761 and 1771 at the city’s Conservato-rio di S. Maria di Loreto. Cimarosa be-came a skilled performer on the violin and the keyboard, as well as an able sin-ger and towards the end of his musical education began to distinguish himself as a capable composer. His talent as a composer of operas soon became known throughout Europe.

Cimarosa’s widespread popularity even-tually led to his employment as Maestro di Capella at the court of the Russian Empress Catherine II in St. Petersburg.

In 1792, Emperor Leopold II appointed him as the successor of Antonio Salieri in Vienna. Until 1796 Cimarosa made frequent travels between Vienna and Naples, until in 1796 he again settled in Naples. But political unrest in the aftermath of the French Re-volution led to a precarious situation for the composer. Known for his republican views, Cimarosa was arres-ted in 1799 and spent four months in prison. He only narrowly escaped the death penalty, thanks to influ-ential supporters such as Lady Hamilton, who acted on his behalf. After his release from prison Cimarosa settled in Venice, where he died in 1801.

Cimarosa’s significance for the music of his time should not be underestimated. His operas were regu-larly staged in the opera houses of all major European cities. His operatic oeuvre was compared to that of Mo-zart. As Esterházy’s Kapellmeister, Haydn conducted 12 of Cimarosa’s operas, and in 1789 Mozart wrote an insertion aria for Cimarosa’s opera ‘I due baroni’. A much lesser known fact is that, besides his extensive operatic output, Cimarosa also wrote almost 90 key-board sonatas, the latest of which are in close styli-stic proximity to Mozart’s dramatic musical language.

Brief Profiles of the threeFeatured Composers

This introduction will guide students to a better under-standing of the composer’s life and work and is parti-cularly helpful for familiarising them with not so well-known masters such as Domenico Cimarosa, featured in Urtext Primo volume 2.

Domenico Cimarosa

Practice Tip At times, it is possible that the notation of a musical effect may imply a particular way of playing it, without making this necessarily obvious at first sight. It makes musical sense to arpeggiate the bass chord and the notes of the first quaver of Scarlatti’s sonata K. 32, and a comparison between the composer’s notation and a written-out performed version illustrates why it may have been easier to imply such a reading, rather than notate it.

Practice Tips

The commentary that accompanies each book is written to support the development of musical, historical and piano-specific knowledge, as an awareness of these elements can only be helpful to musical learning and performing. This includes suggestions on:

• The score• Tempo• Touch and articulation• Dynamics• Ornaments and embellishments

Extract from the practice tips‘In performing 18th century music on a modern piano it is necessary to strive for a balance between the historical sound ideal and the characteristics of the modern piano. Performance practice on a modern instrument tends to advise a lighter touch for the left hand in order to not impair the clarity of the melodic line. Furthermore, the pedal should be used sparingly and the dynamics should never fully exploit the entire range offered by the modern concert grand.’

Volume 5

Chopin – Liszt – Hiller

Jahrhun-derts.

Volume 5 of the Urtext Primo series shows that even great virtuosos were able to write easy pieces. It brings together perhaps the two best-known keyboard personalities of the 19th century: Frédéric Chopin und Franz Liszt. Technically accessable, the pieces compiled here nevertheless have all the flavour of the harmony and pianistic texture so typical of these two composers. And playing ‘real Liszt’ can do much to increase a beginner student’s motivation. The third composer of this volume is Ferdinand Hiller, also a famous 19th century piano virtuoso to whom Robert Schumann had dedicated his piano concerto. As in some works by Liszt and Chopin, Hiller’s com-positions too contain echoes of folk music. His ‘Irländisches Lied’ (Irish song) featured in the present collection is, in a way, a piece of 19th century ‘world music’.
