Munich Airport Cardboard Model ConceptFollowing first stand-alone cardboard dioramas, we now expand our range of easy to build but visually highly detailed cardboard building sets. With this new concept, you decide the size of your airport terminal: if you would like to build Munich’s Terminal 2 close to its full size, you can add together all five sections. Should you only want to build a smaller airport, then you can for example simply connect the northern and southern ends of the pier – with this new concept it is up to you.Each set includes a fitting base plate on which the markings and streets are already printed. A simple introduction and detailed instructions with many tips is included.

In Zusammenarbeit mit Lufthansa wurden 1990 die ersten Flugzeugmodelle als exklusive Pro-dukte für den Bordshop der Airline produziert. Der Maßstab 1:500 entstand damals ganz prag-matisch: Das größte Flugzeug der Flotte, die Boeing 747-400 passte in dieser Größe perfekt in den Flugzeugtrolley. Im Februar 1992 präsen-tierte Herpa dann die ersten Modelle für den
Fachhandel. Schon damals setzten die Produkte Maß-stäbe in der Detaillierung – vor allem durch die Nutzung des Tampon-drucks bei der Gestal-tung der M o d e l l e . In rund 25 Jahren Mo-dellgeschichte
hat sich einiges getan: Heute werden Neuheiten und Exklusivmodelle in rund 40 Ländern vertrieben und leidenschaftlich ge-sammelt. Modelle von damals sind in ihrer De-taillierung kaum mehr zu vergleichen. Die erste Pan Am Airbus A310 kam damals mit ganzen elf Druckvorgängen aus – vergleichbar hat ein Modell heute im Durchschnitt rund 70 einzel-
ne Drucke. Zum Jubiläum der Herpa Wings im Jahr 2017 erscheint eine limitierte Kleinserie von Modellen aus dem Jahr 1992 nochmals als
modernisierte Kleinserie in einer Heri-tage-Verpackung.
Damit wollen wir uns bei allen bedanken, die Herpa Wings über die letzten 25 Jahre mit Leidenschaft, Vorschlägen und auch konstruktiver Kritik
begleitet und unterstützt ha-ben. Für die nächsten 25 Jah-
re haben wir noch viele Ideen und werden Sie auch in Zukunft mit immer
wieder neuen Sammlerstücken überraschen.
In partnership with Lufthansa, the first airplane models were produced as exclusive in-flight sales items for the airline in 1990. The 1/500 scale was chosen rather pragmatically: The lar-
gest aircraft type in the fleet at that time, the Boeing 747-400, simply fitted nicely into the trollies used on board. In February of 1992, Herpa then presented the first mo-dels intended for retail sales.Already back then, these new products set new stan-dards in terms of precision – greatly due to the use of pad printing for the decoration of the models. A lot has hap-pened in the 25 years since: Today, new releases and ex-
clusive productions are distributed to 40 coun-tries around the globe, and collected with great enthusiasm. The models from the early years cannot be compared to today’s products. The first Pan Am A310 had a mere eleven prints – in comparison, today’s models have an average of around 70 individual prints.To commemorate the anniversary of Herpa Wings, a small series of models from the original 1992 releases will be produced again as limited editions in a heritage box design.
We would sincerely like to thank everyone who has been “on board” and supported Herpa Wings throughout the last 25 years with passi-on, countless suggestions and also construc-tive criticism. There are quite a few ideas for the next 25 years and hope to be able to surprise you with new collectors’ items again and again.

For the passengers, in contrast, it was a pretty comfortable
journey, including a sliding window to the front, through which
they could communicate with the pilot, noise permitting. “In
the back, it is a bit like traveling in a carriage, you sit inside
while the pilot works outside. The cabin is furnished with seats
upholstered in cognac-colored leather and even heated, a
luxury we don’t have in the cockpit”, laughs test pilot Baumann.
The F.13 has an endurance of up to three and a half hours,
while humming at 170 km/h at low altitude, translating to a
range of up to 600 kilometers. Limited by rain or snow, the F.13
is a good-weather aircraft, only to be flown visually.
But then, extended flights are not on the drawing card. After
about thirty flight-test hours, the operators hope to achieve
certification from the Swiss civil aviation authority and its Euro-
pean counterpart EASA by mid-2017. The F.13 currently flying
is a unique copy, dedicated for display at air shows, but also
able to carry passengers. If someone, however, does crave his
or her very own F.13 – for the price of US$ 2.5 million – there’s
supposed to be a small-batch series produced in future. A
used private jet is available for half the price. After all, it has
always been a bit more expensive to nurture a taste for the
unique and to own a historic piece of aviation history.

Instrumente, ich hätte gern noch einige mehr, um genauer und
präziser fliegen zu können“, sagt Oliver Bachmann. „Etwa ein
Vario meter, das mir die Steig und Sinkrate anzeigt, oder ein GPS
zur Positionsangabe, das fehlt alles, aber es passt eben nicht in
ein so altes Flugzeug.“ Immerhin gibt es zwei Dinge, die heute in
der Luft gänzlich unverzichtbar sind: ein Funkgerät und ein Trans
ponder. Aber statt eine Fülle an Instrumenten abzulesen, verließen
sich Piloten vor rund hundert Jahren eher auf ihre eigene Sinnes
wahrnehmung: „Ich kann aus eigener Erfahrung sagen, man hört
die Geschwindigkeit, und man spürt sie in der F.13. Das ist schon
sehr ungewohnt, aber wir hatten bisher immer gutes Wetter, und
daher war das kein schlechtes Gefühl. Ein bisschen wie beim
Auto fahren im Cabriolet“, so der Testpilot. Das offene Cockpit war
damals Teil der Philosophie – „vermutlich um eine größere Verbin
dung der Piloten mit der Natur herzustellen. Sie konnten den Wind
spüren und wussten daher, wie schnell sie etwa waren, wegen der
Geräuschkulisse. Dieses Flugzeug wurde viel mehr nach Gefühl
geflogen als nach Instrumenten“, weiß Oliver Bachmann.
Die Passagiere dagegen haben es sehr kommod, inklusive Schie
befenster nach vorn, durch das sie mit den Piloten kommunizieren
können – wenn der Lärm es zulässt: „Hinten ist es ein wenig wie
Reisen in der Kutsche – man sitzt drinnen mit großem Komfort,
während die Piloten vorn draußen arbeiten. Die Kabine ist mit ge
polsterten, cognacfarbenen Ledersitzen ausgestattet und sogar
beheizbar – einen Luxus, den wir vorn im Cockpit nicht haben“,
lacht Testpilot Bachmann. Immerhin bis zu dreieinhalb Stunden
kann ein Flug in der F.13 dauern, während sie mit 170 km/h in
niedriger Höhe dahinbrummt, bis zu 600 Kilometer weit am Stück.
Bei Regen oder Schnee geht nichts, die F.13 ist ein Schönwetter
Flugzeug, das nur nach Sichtflugregeln geflogen werden kann.
Reiseflug ist allerdings auch nicht vorgesehen. Nach etwa 30 Flug
stunden hoffen die Betreiber bis Mitte 2017 auf die Zulassung
durch das schweizerische Bundesamt für Zivilluftfahrt und die eu
ropäische Flugsicherheitsbehörde EASA. Die derzeit fliegende F.13
ist ein Unikat, das vor allem auf Flugschauen gezeigt werden soll,
auch mit Passagieren an Bord. Wer allerdings unbedingt gern sei
ne eigene F.13 hätte – für die Kleinigkeit von 2,5 Mio. USDollar pro
Exemplar soll sie in Kleinserie produziert werden. Einen gebrauch
ten Privatjet bekommt man schon für die Hälfte. Aber es war ja be
kanntlich immer schon etwas teurer, einen besonderen Ge
schmack zu haben und ein historisches Sammlerstück zu besit
zen.

COLLECT!
Um die kompletten Konstruktionspläne für die F.13 zu gewinnen, recherchierte Rimowa aufwändig in Archiven in Deutschland, Frank-reich, Großbritannien und der Schweiz. Entscheidend war aber die vom Pariser Luftfahrtmuseum in Le Bourget gebotene Möglichkeit, ein dortiges F.13-Ka-Originalflugzeug ausführlich per Laser zu vermessen, um die Daten in moderne Konstruktionssoftware zu übertragen..
To get the entire construction plans for the F.13, Rimowa scoured archives in Germany, France, the UK, and Switzerland. Decisive, how-ever, was the possibility offered by the Paris aviation museum in Le Bourget to extensively measure an F.13-Ka original plane by laser, to then process the data by modern construction software.

Junkers utilized tubing of various diameters for the support structure. The replica was made the same way as the original.
