In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the biennial World Cultures Festival, we have gathered artistic gems across the globe, leading our audience to a world of charming cultures that knows no boundaries.

Tango Buenos Aires kicks off the Festival with The Song of Eva Perón, a spectacular tango performance which portrays the legendary life of the First Lady of Argentina through flamboyant and passionate dancing. Shanghai Yue Opera House will conclude the Festival with its graceful rendition of classical plays and two new productions, Empresses in the Palace and A Poet’s Lament. Tango and Yue opera might seem disparate in style, yet they both exude elegance and gorgeousness which never fail to mesmerise.

The Festival features a strong line-up of exciting programmes. The folk dances of the Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili display a perfect mix of agility and strength. Street dance group Jinjo Crew injects cultural elements of Korea to their ingenious dances. Winner of six Grammy Awards, The Chieftains performs classical Irish folk music and impresses the audience with its brilliant improvisation. In her début concert in Hong Kong, African diva Angélique Kidjo celebrates our shared humanity and embraces the world with her powerful and lustrous voice. Concerts and drama featuring Hong Kong arts groups put local flavour into this cross-cultural event.

Apart from stage performances, the Festival also offers an array of extension activities including exhibitions, pre-performance talks, sharing sessions, workshops, salon series talks, writing award scheme, outdoor performances and street dance battle to facilitate the appreciation of world cultures.

I sincerely invite you to be part of the extravaganza and embark on a journey to the world of exquisite arts!

Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo, born 1960, is from the nation of Benin. The BBC included her in its list of the African continent's 50 most iconic figures. The Guardian listed her as one of its Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World. She is also the first woman to be listed among The 40 Most Powerful Celebrities In Africa by Forbes magazine. She now resides in New York.

Her musical influences include Afropop, Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, jazz, gospel, and Latin styles; as well as her childhood idols Bella Bellow, James Brown, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Miriam Makeba and Carlos Santana. She has collaborated with Alicia Keys, Branford Marsalis, Ziggy Marley, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Bono, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg.

By the time she was six, Kidjo was performing with her mother's theatre troupe. As a teenager, she was already making records, with success first on the national radio and then all over West Africa. The continuing political conflicts in Benin led her to relocate to Paris in 1983.

While working various day jobs, she studied music at the CIM, a reputable jazz school in Paris. Dutch jazz-frontman Jasper van't Hof included her as the central star in his successful Afro-Latin-jazz band Pili Pili and soon she engaged herself in a solo career in Paris. She was then discovered by Island Records. This led to a series of

albums that regularly landed her at number one in the international world music charts and harvested her two Grammy Awards for best world music album and several nominations.

In 2004, she performed in Rome at the concert We are the Future in front of 400,000 people, along with Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, Andrea Bocelli, Herbie Hancock and other international stars. In 2005, she appeared at the Africa Unite Live in Addis Ababa, a concert to celebrate the late Bob Marley's 60th birthday, and she was a featured speaker at the conference of African Unity (now African Union) held along with the concert.

She remained faithful to the music of her native region, and yet at the same time adopted a wide array of other styles, especially Afro-American styles like those of Brazil, reggae and jazz from the USA, making her one of the most versatlile artists in contemporary music.

Being such a visible artist, she is frequently approached for good causes, and readily involves herself, like with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Oxfam’s Fair Trade Campaign, Africa for Women’s Rights and the Seal the Deal climate campaign. As UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, she travelled to different countries in Africa. In 2007, she established the Batonga Foundation, which seeks to provide secondary and higher education for girls in Africa.

Afropop is a general name for African popular music. The term emerged while many parts of Africa were moving towards independence from their former colonisers and were developing identities of their own.

Most contemporary genres of African popular music build on cross-fertilisation between indigenous styles and American blues, jazz, Cuban salsa, rumba, Brazilian samba and Jamaican reggae, hence bringing back musical genres that derived from musical traditions taken from Africa to the Americas by slaves.

Thus to the African audiences, Cuban popular music sounded both familiar and exotic.

A definite breakthrough of Cuban music in Africa was in 1974 when the Fania All Stars performed in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at the 80,000-seat Stadu du Hai, in a festival held on the occasion of the heavyweight boxing match between the legendary Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

The Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab plays in a basic salsa style with congas and timbales, but with the addition of Wolof and Mandinka instruments and lyrics. However, as a next step Youssou N’Dour bended Senegalese music into the new, spiritual direction that he is known for, the mbalax.

In the early 20th century a different genre called highlife emerged in Ghana. This genre incorporated traditional Ghanaian melodies and harmonies, as well as main rhythmic structures of local music, and married them with jazzy horns and multiple guitars derived from Western music. Also, highlife soon spread over a wide region especially Nigeria.

Nigerian singer and orchestra leader Fela Kuti took highlife as a starting point, adding elements of contemporary Western pop and jazz to create a style that lay the foundation for the so-called Afrobeat style, a combination of highlife with funk.

In the 1960s, Angélique Kidjo’s native country, Dahomey, as Benin then was named, had a vibrant music scene, being on the crossroads of a lot of musical influences, like highlife from Ghana and Nigeria, Congolese rumba, American soul and French popular music.

Another Afropop icon was Miriam Makeba from South Africa, for Kidjo a main musical hero. Coming from the state that still suffered under apartheid (racial segregation and discrimination), many of her songs revolved around the notions of freedom and equality, but musically she developed a particular style.

So Afropop runs through the continent, having many local varieties. These varieties easily defy borders, which often were the borders drawn by colonial powers, and in this continent with its growing self-awareness, easily traveled from one side to the other.
