Als Ansatzpunkte bieten sich Ernst Mach, Wilhelm Jerusa- lem oder Tadeusz Kotarbi ński an. Der unverwechselbare Charakter verschiedener euro- päischer Traditionen (vor allem in Mitteleuropa,Großbritannien, Skandinavien, Frankreich, Italien und Polen) soll hervor- gehoben werden. Eine eigene Sektion wird Frank P. Ramsey gewidmet werden. The purpose of the workshop is to identify and reassess different forms of “European pragmatism”, and how they interacted with American pragmatism. Natural starting points are Ernst Mach, Wilhelm Jerusalem, or Tadeusz Kotarbi ński. The distinctive character of various national European traditions (esp. in Central Europe, UK, Nordic Countries, France, Italy and Poland) will be high- lighted. A superficial look at the con-tents of Arthur Pap’s workwould lead one to think that italmost defines what was considered to be analyticphilosophy in the periodimmediately following WWII.However, Pap was always apersistent if friendly critique ofanalytic philosophy and oflogical empiricism, and hisviews show the influence ofboth neo-Kantianism andpragmatism. Given Pap’s trai-ning at Yale under Cassirerand at Columbia under Nagel,these influences are com-pletely expected. They do,how-ever, complicate ourunderstanding of the develop-ment of analytic philosophy inthe period and make Pap’svoice rather distinctive.
David J. Stump is a philoso-pher of science at the Univer-sity of San Francisco and theauthor of Conceptual Changeand the Philosophy of Science:Alternative Theories of the APriori. He is co-editor, withPeter Galison, of The Disunityof Science and co-editor andco-translator of a new editionof Henri Poincaré’s Scienceand Hypothesis.

He is alsoHonorary Professor of Philo-sophy (as of 2018) at theAustralian National Universityand co-director of thePhilPapers Foundation. He isinterested in the philosophy of mind (especially conscious-ness) and the foundations ofcognitive science, as well thephilosophy of language, meta-physics and epistemology, andmany other areas.
