Bahadir Hamdemir und Stefan Kraus gründeten die VJ-Kunstgruppe MXZEHN mit dem Ziel Echtzeit-Video-performance als eigenständige Kunstform zu entwickeln. Das namensge-bende Instrument, der Panasonic WJ-MX10 Videomischer steht sym-bolisch für die Art der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung. Scheinbar ein solider Lastenesel aus der Frühzeit der Digitalisierung von Prosumer Homevideo Produktionen verwandelt sich der MX10 unter den Händen von MXZEHN in ein temperamentvolles Vollblut, welches das analoge

Videosignal an seine Grenzen und darüberhinaus trägt.

Eine MXZEHNPerformance begibt sich auf die Suche nach der – dem Gerät innewohnenden – flüchtigenSchönheit. Die Dramaturgie ist dabei keine Darstellung einer Suche nach dem heiligenGral, sondern der Zuschauer wird Zeuge der echten, sich in Variationen wiederho-lendenHeldenreise durch die unerforschten Bildwelten im inneren der schwarzen Box. EineSchönheit, die nicht durch die Ingenieure die-ses Gerätes vorge-sehen oder geplant wurde,sondern die sich erst in der Zweckentfremdung zeigt, im Moment der Störung, wenn der Videomischer unfreiwillig zum Videosynthesizer umgedeutet wird. Bilder, die aus einem solchen System gewonnen werden, sind keine Darstellung äußerer Objekte, sondern sie stellen ausschließlich sich selbst dar – moderiert durch die Künstler, deren virtuose Manipulationen der digitalen Wah-rheit bei aller Abstraktion sehr persönlich ist. Im Verständnis von MXZEHN ist Videokunst als kontinuierliche Veränderung eines dynamischen Signals von grundsätzlich anderer Beschaffenheit als filmische Bilder, die ihre Herkunft von Fotografie und Malerei nie verleugnen können. Mit dem Untertitel „25 Masterpieces per Second“ weisen MXZEHN auf diese Diskrepanz hin und lachen über einen Kunstmarkt, der sich nicht scheut für einzelne Bilder Millionensum-men zu zahlen, während eine MXZEHN-Performance Millionen von Bildern an einem einzigen Abend verschenkt und unwiederbringlich „versendet“.

Anlässlich ihres zehnten Geburtstags begeben sich MXZEHN mit der eigens für das e.werk-Festival entstandenen Performance und

Installation „ZEHN mal ZEHN“ ins Theater:

Im Maschinensaal des e.werks installieren die Videokünstler eine Mega-Videomaschine, für die sie die alten Helden aus den Lagerhallen holen und zu dem größten Analog-Digital-VJ-Setup, das Weimar je gesehen hat, verschalten. Zehn Leinwände und Monitore stellen verschiedene Schnitte innerhalb eines Kreislaufs dar, der an unzähligen Reglern ver-

stellt werden kann.

Zusammen mit den Komponisten Marc Sauter und Philipp Hiemann öffnen die Künstler Stefan Kraus und Bahadir Hamdemir der VJ-Kultur die Theaterbühne. Tagsüber ist „ZEHN mal ZEHN“ eine Installation und Besuchern zugänglich, die sich nun selbst – betreut von MX.PERTEN

an die Regler wagen und Bilder generieren können.

Bahadir ist Leiter der Videoabteilung des Deutschen Nationaltheaters in Weimar und Gründer der Videokunst Gruppe MXZEHN – 25 Mas-terpieces per Second. Als Videodesigner steht das Bewegtbild und seine Manipulation in Echtzeit - sei es analog oder digital - in den Kontexten Theater, Ausstellung und Rave im Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens. Seine virtuosen Improvisationen auf dem Panasonic WJ-MX10 sind das Herz der visuellen Welt von MXZEHN und werden seit 1999 bei Festivals und Ausstellungen in Europa gezeigt.

STEFAN KRAUSgeboren 1974 in Köln,

Stefan ist Designer und Gründungsmitglied von MXZEHN. Seit Ende der 90er Jahre verbindet er in seiner Arbeit Raum, Objekt, Projektion

und Klang zu synästhetischen Gesamtkunstwerken. Die Kontexte sind dabei ganz unterschiedlich: Ausstellung, Event, Konzert, Festival, Work-shop - für das gestalterische “Schweizer Taschenmesser” Kraus liegt die Herausforderung in der Verdichtung aller gestalterischer Möglichkeiten

zu einer Erfahrung für alle Sinne. Seine Arbeiten wurden u.a. beim Sundance Film Festival, Transmediale, ECAADE, Soundframe, Map-ping, Bauhaus09, Ev. Kirchentag Dresden und dem Kunstpreis der ev. Landeskirche Baden-Würtemberg gezeigt. Er gestaltet Preisverleihun-

gen, Festakte, Events und Stage Visuals sowie interaktive Installationen.

MARC SAUTERgeboren 1976 in Schwetzingen, Studium in Heidelberg, Mailand, Weimar: Philosophie, Ethnologie, Geographie und Mediengestaltung

Marc ist Komponist, Developper und Sounddesigner. Mit dem Elek-tronik Duo Seltsam und Strahler veröffentlicht er verstörende Meister-werke auf Source Records, mit der Sängerin Susann Hempel entstanden schaurig-schöne Interpretationen von Else Laskar-Schüler Gedichten und mit dem AV Projekt Bauhausmaschine begleitete er die Feierlich-keiten zum 90. Geburtstag des Bauhaus in Weimar. Seine Soundtracks verleihen Preisverleihungen (u.a. Jugend forscht 2012, Thüringer In-novationspreis), Festakten (u.a. 150 Jahre Bauhaus-Universität Weimar 2010) und Messeauftritten (Innovative Mobility@Salone Genf 2013) eine einzigartige Atmosphäre.

ENGLISHTEN by TEN

MXZEHN – 25 Masterpieces per Second is a german live video perfor-mance group based in Weimar. In celebration of the groups 10th anniver-sary founders Stefan Kraus and Bahadir Hamdemir entered the theatre. They took their collection of semi analogue video devices out of storage to wire them up into a big analogue-digital VJ setup and asked composers Marc Sauter and Philipp Hiemann to join them in the challenge to bring VJ culture (as in visual music) onto the theatre stage. In the performance TEN by TEN the group presents a piece that reflects not only their own process as artists but the artistic idea behing MXZEHN in general. Ten projection screens and television sets show different sections of the video circuit that circulates inside the setup and that can be manipulated – and thus performed live – on countless knobs and dials. The performance starts with a single signal, that is routed – step by step – through the de-vices of the collection. The last device in the chain is the first computer: A MXW FX server that – on the peak of the show – is performed through

the use of iphones.

For over ten years now, VJ Art group MXZEHN treats the moving im-age as a live instrument. Sophisticated technical arrangements are point of departure for virtuous improvisations. Analogue glitch and digital realtime compositing complement each other in the work of MXZEHN

which always centers around the live performability of their imagery.Often enough their light structures escape the pictoral frame and turn the whole room into an hallucinatory experience. MXZEHN avoid represen-tative imagery, which they believe to be used too much in everyday visual

communication to impose them on their audiences.Meaning lies solely in the eye of the beholder.

When Stefan Kraus and Bahadir Hamdmir founded MXZEHN, it was their goal to develop realtime video performance as an unique artform. The name giving instrument, the Panasonic WJ-MX10 video mixer sym-bolizes their artistic approach. Seemingly a solid a solid pack donkey from the early age of the digitalisation of homevideo production, the MX10 turns into a feisty thoroughbred under the hands of MXZEHN who pace

the analogue video signal to the limits – and beyond.

An MXZEHN performance explores the volatile beauty, intrinsic to the device. The drama is not a depiction of the quest for the wholy grale. In-stead the audience becomes witness to a real crusade through the unex-plored image-world sinside the black box. A beauty that was not forseen or planned by the engineers of the device and that reveals itself only in the moment of misappropriation: The moment of malfuntion, when the video mixer turns involuntarily into a video synthesizer. Images derived from such a system are no representaion of outside objects. They repre-sent nothing but themselves – introduced by the artist, whose virtuous manipulation of this digital truth is very personal, despite the abstract

imagery.

In MXZEHNs understanding, video art is the perpetual alteration of a dy-namic signal which is fundamentally different from the cinematographic picture that can never deny their photographic and tabloid descent. With the undertitle “25 Masterpieces per Second” MXZEHN laughs at an art market that literally throws millions at single pictures, while MXZEHN sheds millions of ephemeral pictures during a single MXZEHN perfor-

mance.

Technical InformationThe original performance was commissioned by Deutsches Nationalthe-ater Weimar for the Maschinensaal. The stage setup can easily be adapted to smaller or bigger rooms. As the Weimar configuration is the ideal, i send you a technical description for that. We are well aware that we will have to scale the setup down when we should be selected for the festival.On the stage we use 10 Bütec tables in the size of 2 to 1 meters. On each

table is a set of 2-4 vintage video devices (FBAS) devices.

Each tables output is the input of the next table in a cascading order.Only slightly higher than the seated audience is a platform with two small, black tables with iPods on them. On the top level, before the first table is another small black table for the MX10 that generates the source signal.

During the performance Baha and Stefan perform the tables sequentially and move until the last table, where they play on their current VJ Setup. Marc and Philipp stand on opposite sides of the last table. They stay in their place the whole time. On the peak of the show, Baha and Stefan leave the desk und go to small tables close to the audience, where they pick up two ipods and perform the signal with a tiny touch interface. After this, they slowly return to the tables and take them sequentially out of the mix,

until it is back to the one initial generator, the MX10.

VIDEOWe have all of this equipment on our own. Question is rather if its better to transport or to rent on location. This should be discussed individually.

VINTAGE DEVICES:Each Table with vintage devices has a Preview Monitor (tube) which shows the preview of the tables setup. There is a switch on every table, so the Output of the table can be routed to the FX Server capture when the table is put to use through the video artists.We use several Panasonic WJ MX10, a MX12, Title Generators, 2 Sony Color-Correctors, a Videonix MX-1, several Hama devices, Kameras and TV Sets

MEDIA SERVER:We use a MXW FX Server in a flightcaseWe capture 2 analogue FBAS Videostreams into the Server:1.) The MX10 on the last table2.) The Output from the tables setup.We use 2 Matrox TrippleHeads (VGA) and run 6 Outputs @1024x768 75Hz. One is used for preview, the other 5 Outputs feed the 5 projection screens. The Server is controlled via MIDI and wireless with Touch OSC by 2 iPods.

LIGHTS:Again, we did this at a professional theater, so we could use a lot of resources. The performance will also work on a smaller scale.

TABLES:Each of the tables was lit with masked spots from above.Further there were masked neon tubes on each side of each table, so they would throw cold light onto the artists upper body, arms and face from waist height upwards.The tables lighting is dimmed on when the video artists approach the table.It stays until the artists use the table for the second time:When they leave the table then, the tables lighting is dimmed of

PLATFORM:There are two spots on the platform in front of the audience,that light the small tables with the iPhones and the OSC performance by Stefan and Baha
