The following 12 cello duets have beentaken from a contempory print, now in

the possession of the editor. The original titlereads:

Since the second cello part is no more diffi-cult than the first, it will be found that theseduets also adapt themselves very well togroup playing. Their gayety and folksong likecharacter permit them to be both instructiveand at the same time musically enter taining. The rather sketchy bowing and fingering indications, in the original edition, werecompleted by the editor, who also added thedynamics. The tempos of each movement, printed in parenthese, should only beregarded as suggestions.

Otto Huttenbach

Twelve progressive Duetts for 2 Violin cellosExpressly composed for the use of Beginners by Joseph Reinagle op. 2

Printed and sold by Proston at his Wholesale Warehouses, 97 Strand, London

Joseph Reinagle was born at Portsmouth inEngland, in 1762. His father, who came

from Germany, was “household trumpeter tothe king”. His son Joseph studied cello withSchetky, and violin with Aragoni and Pinto. He began his musical career as concertmasterin Edinburgh. But, after the death of his brot-her, a very talented cellist, he turned com -pletely to the cello. He moved to Lon don,and there performed one of his cello concertoswith great success. In 1784 (Eitner,Quellenlexikon and Bibl. and hist. Dict. ofMusicians [1825]; according to Fétis, Biogr.univ. only in 1789), after the commemorationof Handel in Westminster Abbey, in whichReinagle participated, he went to Ireland, under the patronage of Lord Westmorland. Two years later he returned to London, where he played as solo cellist in Salomon’sconcerts, under the direction of Haydn. Hethen had the honour of enjoying Haydn’sintimate friendship, and receiving more use-ful hints in composition. After his successfulconcerts in Oxford, Reinagle was asked byLord Abingdon and other musical amateursto reside in that city. He died there in 1836.
