TFILAH SKILLS – Individual Coachings für RABB und KANT RABB-AGK Rabbiner Jona Simon, Kantor Jochen Fahlenkamp KANT-AGK Kantor Simon Zkorenblut RABB-ZFC Rabbinerin Gesa Ederberg Wöchentliches Kantorencoachings für KANT-AGK (15 x 60 Minuten) Cantor Professor Dr. Eliyahu Schleifer Cantor Dr. Josée Wolff Cantor Azi Schwartz Cantor Simon Zkorenblut Cantorial coaches concentrate on enriching the semester topic’s repertoire of the students and deepening the musical interpretation of selected compositions. Coaching lessons are an integral part of the vocal training for singers and they are given as individual lessons. They are distinguished from voice lessons in that they do not deal with vocal techniques, but with the song repertoire and its art of performance. The teacher works with the student on the music that the student is required to sing, guiding the student into all the intricacies that render the performance professional, artistic and exciting. Cantorial Coaching lessons concentrate on traditional synagogue chants, artistic cantorial recitatives, and songs, which are related to the repertoire that is studied in class during the semester. In addition, the coaching teacher works with the student on the music that he/she needs for the services while officiating as student-cantor. During the coaching lessons, the emphasis is made on understanding the sacred texts, their liturgical function and their religious and emotional meaning. The coach guides the student in the proper way of singing the repertoire according to the tradition of the Jewish cantorial style and encourages the students to find his/her individual expression for each liturgical piece of music.

Sie dürfen dort u. a.

Rabbiner Prof. Dr. Walter Homolka WILLKOMMEN & SHIUR: AUF DEN SCHULTERN VON RIESEN [E] Donnerstag, 10.11.2016 (18:00 – 19:30 Uhr)

Rabbiner Edward van Voolen PRAKTIKUM, EINE EINFÜHRUNG / INTERNSHIPS AN INTRODUCTION [E] Mittwoch 07.12.2016 (17:30 – 19:00 Uhr) Internships are an essential part of the rabbinic and cantorial training at the College. An internship ideally creates a balance between the personal academic development and the spiritual growth of the student on the one hand, and the expectations of a congregation on the other side. This introduction starts with the many challenges and opportunities in Germany and Europe. We discuss the ways internships are planned and realized and look at the support the College offers. We talk about the specific goals we need to formulate in the process, for ourselves, for the communities we serve. And last but not least, we start to open the window towards the future: what sort of Judaism would we like to shape, what vision do we have?

Cantor Prof. Dr. Eliyahu Schleifer THE CALLING OF THE CANTOR [E] Donnerstag, 08.12.2016 (11:00 – 13:30 Uhr) Like the German verbal noun “Ruf” the word calling has two meanings: 1. The cantor’s calling to the congregation 2. The cantor being called to the service of God and the community (compare Ruf and Beruf) a similar verbal noun in English is a vocation. The seminar will begin with a short non-conventional prayer session and will contain discussions on the following topics:

“Know before Whom you are standing”: Facing God and the congregation Relationship of the cantor with other leaders of the congregation: The Rabbi and the lay

leaders

Prof. Dr. Admiel Kosman THE POSITION AND FUNCTIONS OF A RABBI IN RABBINIC LITERATURE [E] Donnerstag, 26.01.2017 (18:00 – 19:00 Uhr) Using a number of texts from Rabbinic literature, we will discuss the development of the office of rabbi over the centuries.

The cantor’s role as leader, teacher, and mentor The cantor’s role as pastor and hand-holder When there is no rabbi in the congregation: The cantor as the main spiritual leader.

It prepares the students to read the Torah portions in the synagogue services of Weekdays, Shabbatot and Holy Days and creates the foundation for teaching the chants to Bar/Bat-Mitzvah students. Special emphasis is laid on the correct pronunciation of the Hebrew sacred texts and the proper chanting of the Torah portions.

LEYNEN EASTERN STYLE II & I II: Do 16.02.2017 & (16:30 – 18:30 Uhr) I: Fr 17.02.2017 (10:00 – 12:00 Uhr) Prof. Dr. Judith Frishman We will learn to leyn from the Torah according to the East-Ashkenazi tradition. The various patterns involved will be studied and applied to biblical texts. We will practice together, individually and in pairs. By the end of the session, students will independently be able to break down a text into the various combinations of ta'amim and subsequently piece these together as a whole. The students will practice leynen from either the Parashat haShavu’a or a Torah portion that they have been asked to leyn in the synagogue service in the coming weeks.

Rabbi Eli Reich HALAKHAH FOR WEEKDAY [E] [BS] Montag, 13.02.2017 / Dienstag, 14.02.21017 /Montag, 20.02.2017 / Dienstag, 21.02.2017 We shall focus on Jewish religious practice, as related to Weekday Prayer as well as to practice in general. The course will deal with practices that structure Jewish religious life, both in their traditional formulation as well as their possible contemporary re-interpretations. Our sources for the unit are both classical and contemporary, Halakhah and Aggadah. We shall explore the following topics:

Waking up, Morning Prayers & Rituals Halakhah, Mitzvah, and Minhag Torah Study: How, What, and Why? Practices of a Religious, Spiritual, and Ethical Life Being Jewish in a Secular, Postmodern, and Post-Secular Age The Individual, the Community, and the World

Dr. Jeremy Schonfield LITURGY: UNDERCURRENTS OF DAILY JEWISH PRAYER [E] [BS] 15.02.2017 /16.02.2017 /22.02.2017 The prayer book is nearly always read for its surface meaning and accessed with the help of translations and commentaries. This module will argue for a more challenging approach. We will begin by discussing how nothing is obvious about prayer, especially the use of ritually repeated language to communicate with God. It will then explore some of the liturgy’s submerged messages. These will be discovered by identifying the original contexts of embedded citations from Tanakh and rabbinic writings, and by applying rigorous literary analysis to the prayers themselves. Users of the prayer book tend to assume that they know the texts well, but most of the underlying meanings of the liturgy that will emerge in the course of our study will be wholly unfamiliar. The goal of the module is to identify core narratives implicit in the prayer book, and to study the gaps that haunt every attempt to understand worship.

Students are asked to read the weekday liturgy in Hebrew before the beginning of the term, using a traditional Ashkenazi prayer book with a translation if necessary. We will focus on the morning, afternoon and evening services and the grace after meals. These will form the starting point of discussion.

Students should also read Dr. Jeremy Schonfield, Undercurrents of Jewish Prayer (ISBN: 978-1-904113-00-3) (Oxford and Portland, Oregon: Littman Library of Jewish Civilization, 2006), at least chapters 4, 5, 9 and 11, and preferably the whole book. This introduces the approach being used and the themes to be discovered in the preliminaries to the morning service. Discussion in class will identify those of the other daily services.

MODUL BIBEL UND RABBINISCHE TEXTE Prof. Dr. Shani Tzoref MIQRA 28.10.2016 /04.11.2016 /11.11.2016 /18.11.2016 (Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg) /25.11.2016 (Rabbinerin Gesa Ederberg) /09.12.2016 /16.12.2016 /06.01.2017 /13.01.2017 /20.01.2017 /27.01.2017 (Rabbinerin Gesa Ederberg) /03.02.2017 Freitag (9:00 - 12:00 Uhr) The custom of conducting a weekly review of the Torah portion (שנים מקרא ואחד תרגום) recorded in b.Berakhot 8a creates a brilliantly effective pedagogical and experiential structure for a serious encounter with biblical texts. The value of this engagement was recognized by the most influential of modern Jewish Biblical pedagogues, the late Prof. Nechama Leibowitz, whose Question and Answer method was popularized through her personal interaction with students around the world (via http://www.nechama.org.il/pages/). In this course, we will use "Nechama"'s gilyonot as a springboard for close reading of the biblical texts and an introduction to traditional Jewish exegetes, particularly medieval commentators. We will ask not only the now-conventional question "What is bothering Rashi" but also: what "bothers" us as readers, and what strategies have Jewish readers developed for addressing such questions. Students will be encouraged to identify and describe lexical, morphological, sociological, theological, and literary features that catch their attention and to examine how such questions are addressed critically in Biblical scholarship.
