1 St.MarysTheColleagueitselfisaquitesmallone,whichcreatesaveryfamiliaratmosphere.Ienjoyedgoingtherebecauseeveryonewasveryfriendlyandhelpful.Iwasreallyhappythatthecolleaguesupportedussomuchinorganizingthings.
1.1.1 PEThecoursesIlikedbestwerethePEcourses.Onecoursewasnetball;itwasthefirsttimethatIhaveheardaboutthatsportatall.Itremindedmeonbasketball.Theballyouplaywithissmallerandthebasketwhereyouhavetothrowtheballintohasnoboard.Everyplayerhasaspecialpositionandanareawhereheisallowedtomove.Atthebeginningitwasalittlebitcomplicatedformetogetalltherulesinmymind,butassoonasyougotit,it’saverycoolgame.
EveryMondayinthemorningIjoinedswimming.Thewaterinthepoolwasreallywarm;itfeltlikeinabathtub,Iwasalwayslookingforwardtoit.
1.1.2 IrishCulturalLandscapeOneofthetheoreticalcoursesthatwasmyfavorite.NowIknowallthestuffaboutIrelandintheveryearlydays.Howthepeoplegotthere,whentheyarrivedthereandwhatadaywaslikeinthelifeofahumanintheStoneAge.TherearealotofoldmonumentsalloverIreland.It’sinterestingtogetanideawhattheymighthavebeenfor.TheearlysettlersofIrelandwerealreadyveryskilledinartanddifferentkindsofcraft.Theycreatedthingsthatwereamazing.Ilikeittolearnaboutthingsthatarenot100%sure,forexamplewhyhumansbuiltthestonemonuments.Sothereisalittlespaceforfantasy.
1.1.3 IrishHistoryAlotofquestionsIhadaboutNorthernIrelandhadbeenansweredinthiscourse.Ithinkit’sgoodtoknowaboutthehistoryofthecountryyoulivein,evenifitisjustforsomemonths.Thehistorystillaffectsthepresent,soit’sinterestingtoknow,whytherearewallsinBelfast,whytherearepeoplerunningaroundwithBritishflagsandwhythepeopleliveindividedsocieties.
1.1.4 UnityinDiversityHerewehadthepossibilitytowatchfilmsaboutsocialaspects.Intheseminarswecouldtalkaboutingroupsandthendiscussitwiththeteacherandtheclass.HalfoftheclasswasIrishstudentsandhalfwereErasmusstudents,sowehaddifferentviewsofdifferentcultures.Thefilmswereshowninthelanguagewherethefilmwasfrom,soIunderstoodatleastonefilm,theGermanone.Nojustkidding.

2 TravellingandexperiencesWealmostdidthewholenorthcoastfromCastlerockuntilFairHeadandwehadtripstoDonegal,Cork,KerryandDublin.Wereallysawalotofniceplaces.
2.1.1 Castlerock:Castlerockisasmallvillageattheseaside.IthasanicebeachandyoucanwalkalongthecoasttoMussendenTemple.CastlerockwasourfirsttripoutofBelfast.WewereveryimpressedhowgreenIrelandis.AustriaforexampleisalsoverygreenbutnotasgreenasIreland,allthecolorsofthenatureareverybride.Wearrivedatthebeachandthefirstthingwesawweredolphins20minfrontofthebeach.ThatdaywasaperfectstartforagoodtimeinIreland.

2.1.2 Portrush
PortrushisthemostfamousplaceforsurfinginNorthernIreland.Atnightyoucanfindcoolbarsandnightclubsthere.ItissaidthatthereisthebiggestnightclubofIreland(Kelly’s).Portrushhasabeachtothewestandonetotheeast.It’sverynicetohaveawalkfromEastStandtotheendofthebeach(Whiterocks).Thereisasurfshopintowncalled„Troggs“,whereyoucanrentsurf–andbodyboard(5–10₤/day)andwetsuits(7₤/day)fromApriltoNovember.2hourlessonsareforaround25₤.

Iwentthereafewtimesofsurfing.IbroughtallmysurfstufffromAustria,soIdidn’thavetorentit.Irelandisreallygoodforsurfing.Ididn’texpectthatgoodcondition.Thewavesareclearandnotverymessedup.Iwassurprisedhowmanypeopledosurfing,evenattemperaturesofunder10°C.ItwasthefirsttimethatIsurfedunderrainbows.SometimesIevenforgotaboutcatchingwaves,becausethewholethinglookedsofascinating.Whenyouwanttosurfthereandbringyourownstuffyouneedawetsuitofatleast5mm,glovesahatandsocks,otherwiseitwouldbesofreezing.

Theyhavealltheinformationandarereallycooperative.SometimespeoplefromBelfastareheadinguptothecoastforsurfing,whocangiveyoualift.
2.1.3 DunluceCastle:FurtheronthewaytothewestthereisDunluceCastle.YouwalktherearoundanhourfromPortrush.Ithinkit’sreallyworthwalkingthatdistance,becauseonyourwayyoucanseealotofnicecliffs.Theroadalwaysgoesalongthecoast,soyouhavealotofgreatviews.Whenyouareluckyyoualsomightseeanelephantonyourway.
BeforegettingtotheCastlethereisaplatformwithagoodviewonit.Ithinkthecastlelooksmuchmorespectacularfromthedistance.Whenyoupassitandthenlookbackitlooksthebest,becauseyouseethecastleandinthebackthebeautifulcoastlineuntilPortrush.Amantheretoldmeastrangestoryaboutthiscastle.DuringabigstormwhenDunclescastlewasinhabited,thekitchen,whichwasbuiltrightattheedgeofthecliff,brokeintotheocean.Sincethatdaythecastlestartedtofallinpieces,becausewhat’sacastlewithoutakitchen,themansaidwithasmile.

2.1.4 PortballintraeInthebeginningofOctobertherewasanevent“surfersagainstpollutedocean”wereItookpart.WemetatPunkerrybeachandcollectedallthewastewefoundatthebeach.Ithinkit’sagoodideatokeepthebeachesclean.Ipickedup2,5kgtinyplasticpieces.Imetalotofcoolpeoplethere.Theonewhocollectedmostwastewonaprice.Unfortunatelyitwasn’tme.Thepricewasthicksocksforthecoldweather.IgottheinformationaboutthateventfromtheQueensuniversitysurfclub.
2.1.5 Giant’sCausewayGiant’sCausewayisprobablyoneofthemostfamoustouristattractionsinIreland.It’sreallyveryimpressive,butalsoaplaceofmasstourism.WhensomebodycomestoNorthernIrelandhehastoseeitatleastonce.Whenyouseethesymmetrical,hexagonalstonesraisingfromthegroundyoucan’tbelievethatnaturemadethis.Itlookslikeawaybuiltoftisstonesleadingintotheocean.Scientistssaythatmillionsofyearsago,therewerehugevolcaniceruptionsandaftertheywereover,thousandsofstrange-lookingcolumnsappearedonthecoastofCo.Antrim.

It'ssaidthattheCausewaywasbuiltbyagentlegiant,FionnMacCumhain,orFinnMcCool.Evenlegend,though,hasitscontrastingaccounts.Inonetale,FinnwassaidtobeinlovewithaladygiantwholivedontheScottishislandofStaffa,andthathebuilttheCausewayinordertosafelybringherhometoIreland.Infact,there'sasimilarthoughsmallercollectionofthestrangecolumnsonStaffa'scoastline,andgeographically,IrelandandScotlandwereoncemuchcloserthantheyaretoday.
2.1.6 WhiteParkBay:AfterthesteepcliffypartofthecoastawidesandybaycallWhiteParkBayappears.Wewerethereonasunnywarmday.It’sperfecttorelaxorwalkalongthebeach.YoureachitwhenyoutakethebusfromColerainetoBallycastle.

2.1.7 RopeBridgeThenextbigtouristspotistheropebridge,whichyoucanalsofindonmanypostcards.Fromtheparkingspaceanicewayalongthecliffsisleadingtotheropebridge,whichconnectsthemainlandwithasmallrockyisland.

2.1.8 FairHead
MyfavoritespotinNorthernIrelandwasFairHead.FormeitreallyrepresentstheNorthernIrishlandscape.It’squitealongwalktherewhenyoustartfomBallycastle.Ittookus4hourstothetopofFairHead(withalotofstops).Butit’sdefinitelyworthwalkingthissmallpathalongtheshoretothebigcliffs.It’snicebecausetherearealmostnopeoplewalkingthistrack.Sometimesyoucan’tevenseethepath,becauseit’ssocrooked.IwasatFairHead3timesandonetimewesawasealintheocean.ItwasthefirsttimeinmylivethatIsawoneinnature.
TherearetwosmalllakesattheplateauofFairheadwhichperfectlyfitintothelandscape.
2.1.9 GlenariffForestPark.GlenariffforestparkisnearWaterfoot.Ithinkthenicestplacethereistheglenariffwaterfall.Inautumntheforestlooksmagicalbecauseofallthedifferentcolorsoftheleaves.

2.1.10 TheDarkHedges.OnceIwatchedapageintheinternetabouttheplacesyouhavetogobeforeyoudie.TheDarkHedgeswereoneofthoseplaces.Thisiswhywewentthere,anditreallylookscool.Whenyouwalkthisstreetyoufeellikethetreeswanttograbyou.
ThisbeautifulavenueofbeechtreeswasplantedbytheStuartfamilyintheeighteenthcentury.ItwasintendedasacompellinglandscapefeaturetoimpressvisitorsastheyapproachedtheentrancetotheirGeorgianmansion,GracehillHouse.Twocenturieslater,thetreesremainamagnificentsightandhavebecomeoneofthemostphotographednaturalphenomenainNorthernIreland.
2.1.11 TravellingtoDonegalWerentedacarfortwodaysandwenttoDonegal.Thedrivewasfunnybecauseitwasmyfirsttimesince3yearsthatIdrovearightdrivencar.MymainproblemwasthatIalwaysactivatedthewindscreenwasherinsteadofblinking.Iwasalsoabitirritatingthatyouhavetochangegearswiththelefthand,butwereachedourdestinationwithoutproblems.
2.1.12 SlieveDonegalCliffsWhenwegottheretheweatherwasverycloudy.Bigraincloudswerepassinginthedistanceovertheoceandroppingbigamountsofrain.Theatmospherewasreallyapocalypticandperfectlyfittedtothemassivecliffs.IfeltlikeIwasinthefilm“braveheart”.Onourwaytothecliffswesawalotofsheepstandingattheveryedgeinfrontoftheabysm.ThisiswhyIcalledthesuicidesheep.Weclimbeduptherocksuntilwefoundthatverycooloverhangingrock,thatlookslikethe“lionkingrock”.Whenyoustandonitandinfrontof,besideandunderyouisnothingexceptairyoufeellikethekingoftheworld.Icouldhavespenthoursatthisplace,becauseitwassuchanepiclookout.Unfortunatelywesawbigraincloudsjustcomingourway,soweescaped.

Tofollowingnightweall(5persons)sleptinthecarrightinfrontofGlencolumbkillebeach.Thenightwasnotverycomfortable,butitwasacooladventureandnowwhenIthinkbackitevenfunny.

2.1.13 MalinBay:EarlynextdaywewentontoMarlinBay.ThesunwasshiningandIwasjustaperfectmorning.Downatthebeachwesawthousandsofjellyfishwhowerewasheduptothesand.Becauseoftheheavyrainthedaybeforetherewerealotoflittlewaterfallsfallingoverthecliffsintotheocean.
2.1.14 ArdaraBeachOurnextdestinationwasArdarabeach.Onourwaywepassedawaterfallwerewehadalittlepicnic.Thebeachwashugeandtherewerebigsanddunes.Thestreetsinthatareawereverysmallandthespeedlimitsextreme.Youwereallowedtogo50milesonastreet,whereitwasalreadyhardtodrive

with30miles.Everymilesheepappearedonthestreet.Theyaresofunnybecausewhenyouhunk,Itakesthemsomesecondstorecognizethattherewassomething.Thentheyraisetheirheadsandnoticethatyouarethereandthentheyrunawayinpanic.
BeforewehadtogobacktoBelfastwequicklyhadalookatMackoght.Thismountainlookslikeavolcanoandonthetoptherewasalreadyalittlebitofsnow.AfterthesetwodaywerecognizedthatTwodaysaretoolesstoseeallthebeautifulplacesofthatarea.

2.1.15 Music&NightlifeIrelandisreallyalandofgoodmusic.DifferenttoAustriatherearelocalartistsplayingtraditionalmusicinnearlyeverypub.Sometimestheyplaymusicfromthecharts,butinanIrishway.Thatreallysoundscool.Somanypeoplehereplayinstruments.
Iwaslucky;becauseIsaw3ofmyfavoritebandsliveinlimelight.LimelightIacomplexoutofLimelightone,limelighttwoandinbetweenthereisKate’sbar.It’sacoollocation,withabigprogramofgoodbandsplayingthere.PeopletoldmethatitisthemostexclusiveclubinBelfast.
WhatIseeastypicalIrishareallthenicepubs.Whenyouentersuchanoldpub,youreallycanimaginehowitwaslikealongtimeago.
AltogetherIhadanawesometimeinIreland.IthinkIwasthebestdecisionIcouldmaketocometoNorthernIreland.Itravelledalot,IsawsomanyniceplacesbutwhenIlookatthemap,therearestillsomanyplacesIhaven’tseen.ThisiswayI’lldefinitelycomeagain.SometimesIrelandremindedmeonthesouthofAustraliaandTasmaniawithallitsuntouchedlandscapes.AsIarrivedIexpectedmuchmorerain,buttheweatherwasquiteniceallthetime.Ithinkthereweremoresunnydaysthanrainyones.WhatIlikedbestwasthat,wheneverwemadeatriptheweatherwasnice.IalsohavetosaythattheIrishpeopleareveryfriendly.Wewereatalotofplaceswherepeoplejuststartedtellingusoldstoriesormythsaboutplaceandit’sreallyinterestingtolistentothem.
ThethingInoticedonmytripswasthattherearehardlynofieldswereplantslikesweetcorn,grainoranythinglikethisisplanted.Thefarmedareasaremostlyforanimalslikesheepandcows.IAustriaforexampleit’stheotherwayaround.
