The pictures in this book were created on my three trips to Venezuela between April 2008 and July 2009. Over a period of more than two months I was privileged to attend the rehearsals and concerts of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra in Caracas, as well as those of many small children’s orchestras at numerous music centres (the núcleos), and to take photographs of their work.

On each occasion I was moved afresh by the seriousness and pride with which the children carried their musical instruments to their lessons. There they learn to concen-trate and to lend each other support. They learn how to express their feelings in music, they acquire self-confi -dence, they are able to structure their work and pursue their own goals. They are part of a massive movement throughout the country. This movement is changing a whole society, and is a way out of poverty and hopeless-ness. This is the sound of the future.

The Hilti Foundation supports the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela by providing it with fi rst-class concert instruments. In the course of the Lucerne Festival 2008, Michael Hilti, President of the Foundation Board, gave conductor Gustavo Dudamel the fi rst stringed instruments for his orchestra.

A good book, an exciting fi lm, an expressive picture – there are plenty of cultural masterpieces that can touch us at a deep level. And yet, all the same, there are differences.

One such difference was revealed to me through my encounter with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Ve-nezuela. Only rarely have I come across such passion in young people, combined with discipline and happiness. Never before had I sensed such dedication, and at the same time such a will to make music, as I felt with these young students of Venezuela’s núcleos, the local music schools. This enthusiasm, élan, and the fun felt by these children and young people as they took their place in the orchestra, not only fascinated me, it also stirred me at a deeply emotional level. Anyone who has ever had the opportunity of hearing the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra in concert will understand what I am talking about.

The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra is the top of a a net-work of orchestras in which more than 265,000 children and young people take part, most of them coming from socially disadvantaged Venezuelan communities. The 200 or so young musicians of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra are now giving delight to music lovers all over the world, and making even conservative audiences in big concert halls jump out of their seats. Their conductor Gustavo Dudamel has risen from the ranks, and yet he is one of those rare and exceptional talents to appear on the musical scene in recent years. He is easily idolised, but he supports and holds the whole thing together. He doesn’t just know how to strike the strings of a musical instrument to make them sound as they never have befo-re. He also knows how to touch the strings in the souls of the children and young people so as to awaken in them the very same passion for music.

Foreword by Michael Hilti

Direction and speed: Gustavo Dudamel focuses the energy and brings these young people’s enthusiasm to breathless and harmonious heights.

For the Hilti Foundation it is both an incentive and an honour, to be able to contribute to this project, by giving these young people the opportunity of developing skills, self-confi dence and a sense of responsibility through their active orchestral music-making. These are qualities which will be invaluable to them in their passage from childhood to a life as responsible adults.

Gustavo Dudamel

I cannot really quantify my gratitude for this beautiful project we are sharing with the Hilti Foundation. This collection of instruments will not only contribute to the improvement of our music making, but the resonance will be heard in concert halls, masterclasses and educational activities around the globe as we embark on our future tours, thus extending the gift of music everywhere, and for the years to come. The orchestra is full of enthusiasm and I thank the Hilti Foundation from the bottom of my heart and look forward to many years of fruitful collabo-ration.

The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra is playing its way out of the Venezuelan slums and into the world. With new instruments, the Hilti Foundation is helping to keep the miracle of Venezuela moving on.

At last her time has come: Angélica Olivo seems to be playing Prokofi ev’s Violin Concerto no. 1 as if her life depended on it – and Claudio Abbado is moved. The 16-year old violinist has been practising eleven hours a day, day in day out, for two years. And now the great conductor wants to help her with what is at once the most important and at the same time the most diffi cult task for any artist – developing her talent, fi nding her path. For the concert on Valentine’s Day 2009 a new violin was put into Angélica’s hands – made by Madrid violin-maker Laurent López, and modelled on a Ruggeri. It belongs to the collection of the Hilti Foundation, which is sponsoring the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Vene-zuela to the tune of three million US dollars.

An exceptional talent«We had a cup of tea together in Lucerne once, and I asked myself why the orchestra didn’t have a sponsor yet», says Egbert Appel, Managing Director of the Hilti Foundation, recalling his fi rst meeting with the conductor Gustavo Dudamel. That was in the summer of 2007. 26 years of age at the time, Dudamel was already a super-star in Venezuela – one who had achieved what all aspire to. The frizzy-haired musician from the provincial town of Barquisimeto has played his way to world fame. Today the man who directs his orchestra by using his whole body and a lively repertoire of gestures is widely viewed as one of the world’s most gifted and fascinating conduc-tors. His mentors – Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim and Sir Simon Rattle – praise him to the skies. Rattle and Abbado conduct the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra regularly.

A good musical groundingWith superior instruments, young people are going to play even better, thought Egbert Appel. And so the Hilti Foundation commissioned professors of music to go looking for double basses, celli, violins, violas and bows in selected studios and workshops of Madrid, Rome, Lucerne, Berlin and London. On the way they happened upon a violin made by the Italian violin-maker Lorenzo Ventapane, dating from about 1845. This is the inst-rument which the leader of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra, Alejandro Carreño, now uses. «The aim is to get new instruments for all the musicians», Appel says. That the orchestra exists at all is the result of «El Sistema». Behind the scheme lie 34 years of idealism on the part of musician and politician José Antonio Abreu. In 1975 he got eleven young people from the slums to make music in a garage. In a short while they had grown into hund-reds.

Music as a life chanceIn a calm voiceover, Abreu speaks about «El Sistema» in a documentary fi lm. «Today we are struggling, with the resources of art, for a new generation of children and young people», he says – explaining the unique network of children and youth orchestras which now gives more than 265,000 children an everyday structure and purpo-se in life. His objective was to offer young people from depressed areas and socially disadvantaged families dignity, self-confi dence and a life without drugs or vio-lence – through the practice of music. The result was a national movement of music schools. At the top of the pyramid is the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezu-ela. Wherever the orchestra plays – and it is now in great international demand – Beethoven, Mahler and Schubert sound more impetuous than usual, for each and every one of the nearly 200 members of the orchestra plays as if it were a matter of life and death.

Discipline and securityThe national music schools have various different levels, catering even for the very youngest – who have their own «paper orchestra», practising with cardboard stringed instruments. «El Sistema» sets the tones of the violin against the vicious cycle of drugs, violence and degrada-tion.

On a better course: The children are proud to take their instruments to music lessons.

«With music the children also experience discipline, it gives them confi dence and security, they learn to be responsible and considerate» says Dudamel, himself a child of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra. He was just ten years old when his friends took him along to an orchestral rehearsal. «El Sistema» gave him a violin, and one day he made it to the conductor’s desk.

Wrong notes are betterThe young violinist Angélica Olivo is now studying at the conservatory in Caracas, having moved with her entire family from an impoverished district of Barquisimeto. «The project combines culture, education and social develop-ment – that is what makes it important for us», says Egbert Appel. It was in a music school adjacent to a racetrack, he says, that he discovered how much enthu-siasm for music even three-year-olds can develop by beating time on a drum – with their mothers in atten-dance. The government of Venezuela has realised that with children and young people the important thing is what you put into their hands. Give them a knife, and it is downhill all the way. Give them a violin, and in the worst-case scenario they are only going to play out of tune.

There are many different kinds of help. The most humane is the kind that makes people independent and enables them to stand on their own feet. The most beautiful is the kind that makes them happy and contented. I have been experiencing both kinds for two years now in working with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel.

The work of the Hilti Foundation is based on the four pillars of social, cultural, entrepreneurial and educational support. Every one of these four aspects may be found in the Foundation’s sponsorship of these young musicians.

It is of central importance for us that the members of the orchestra should be able to develop their own talents – with responsibility, discipline and commitment – and so communicate their love of music to people all over the world. We are proud and grateful that our instruments and our support have been able to make a contribution to this.

Welcome to this book, which with its intense images gives an idea of the work of our National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras. It was created in 1975 as a major project of social action through music. Under «El Sistema» musical education – and, in particular, the coll-ective practice of music, in choirs and orchestras – has turned out to be an effective tool for bringing about pro-found changes in society – providing a context in which the experience of art may generate in children and young people a love of beauty, respect for others, a vision of the future and a sense of civic responsibility.

Values

by Maestro José Antonio Abreu

Valores

Maestro José Antonio Abreu

I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Hilti Foundation for having honoured its promise, given to the children and youth of Venezuela, in the most exemplary way.

This project came into being at the start of 2008. After two years of partnership we have succeeded in consoli-dating the harmonious relations between the Hilti Foun-dation and our «El Sistema», based on the agreement of our fundamental values. We both emphasise solidarity, the love of community, aspiration to excellence, team-work and the principle of collective responsibility. These shared values have given rise to respect and mutual gratitude with the common object of fostering and play-ing music and so struggling to build a better future.

Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra, the summit of our musical System, is grateful to the Hilti Foundation for its generosity in providing so many of its young mu-sicians with valuable instruments. To our young people these instruments mean a great leap forward into the future, a new challenge in their efforts to reach perfec-tion and a powerful impulse that launches them towards fabulous horizons.

Right from the beginning I have insisted that the idea of «culture for the poor» cannot mean a poor culture. Today we can reassert, with greater emphasis than ever, our conviction that children of few or limited resources deserve to have the best instruments, the best teachers and the most advanced technology put in service of their musical education. The invaluable support of the Hilti Foundation confi rms the soundness and the nobility of this supreme principle.

The project that the Hilti Foundation is developing with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is a great thing. The quality of the new instruments this organisation has placed in our hands contributes greatly to the professional growth of all of us musicians of the Venezuelan Orchestral System, and will inspire and project us towards world class performances in the future.

The sound of each one of these instruments brings a very special shine to our repertoire. This motivates and pushes us to improve our technique in order to be on par with every single instrument which the Hilti Foundation provides. It is almost a point of honour for a musician who receives an instrument to work hard and intensely and demonstrate to the colleagues in the section – and the whole orchestra – that he deserves the trust that has been placed in him.

For me, it is a great honour to have the opportunity of playing on a marvellous violin built by Lorenzo Ventapane about 1845 in Italy. Thanks to it, I have been able to ex-tend my range of tonal colours considerably. I have great respect for this instrument, not only for the very long history it bears, but also because I’ve come to discover it has its own authentic personality.

It would be a beautiful thing if every day more and more companies were to trust in the transforming power of music and be inspired by this project, which the Hilti Foundation has undertaken with such generous dedica-tion in support of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.
