Let’s just state the obvious here. We Mikkeli people are all superhumans. You think I’m joking? Just think about it.

We study hard and take education very seriously. We take part in various after school activities. We are members of various clubs and participate in the acti-vities they offer.

Our priorities include exercise, eating clean and kee-ping up a healthy lifestyle. We help each other in every circumstance.

We do party, but for goodness sake, we NEVER let it affect our sleeping pattern or schoolwork. And we do all that so efficiently and with such grace!

Don’t you agree? Just take a look at my average Wed-nesday!

8:00 am Five more minutes please!8:20 am Why did I have to sleep so long? Now I’m already late!9:00 am *Eats breakfast while simultaneously doing makeup*9:17 am *Biking faster than contestants in Tour de France* WHY CAN’T I EVER WAKE UP ON TIME? This morning? At nine. The online lecture starts at 9:30. Okay, I can make it.

See? Just amazing.

I seriously feel like my brain is incapable of adjusting itself to this terribly hectic Mikkeli lifestyle. Hopefully this jet lag will wear off eventually. If your struggles are similar to mine, take a look at this issue’s articles. I sure will. •

Linh Tran, who has the highest GPA amongst the 15s, doesn’t try to learn new things by heart. She has a more effective technique – she tries to create mea-ningful connections between new information and the knowledge she already has. Tran favors mind maps, finding text-to-text connections, and trying to conne-ct the text book concepts to real life examples. Sounds more fun than just trying to remember a bunch of in-dividual sentences, eh?

Time management is one of the most usual issues Mikkeli students suffer from, as our curriculum is very hec-tic. Tuukka Vettenranta, the former chairman of the Probba board, encou-rages prioritizing. He says that there is never too little time, it’s only a mat-ter of priorities. Not everything has to be – or can be – done perfectly, just do the best and most efficient job you possible can in the given time you have.

“Do something today so you don’t have to do it tomor-row” was one of Anna Garant’s tips. The former mas-ter of ceremonies prefers setting goals for the future to make studying more meaningful. She also recom-mends scheduled study sessions and highlights the

importance of breaks, teamwork of study buddies, and getting rid of distractions (never study with your pho-ne, never). Marja Elonheimo, who is a planning officer and a team leader of learning services in Otaniemi campus, has a more scientific twist on learning. She emphasizes the importance of motivation: if you are interested in what you are learning and enjoy it, you’ll have the motivati-on to learn new things in a deeper, more organized le-

vel. Strategic learning leaves engrams in your long-term memory, where you can retrieve that information later.

When you’re externally motivated to learn a particular subject, you may be studying only for the grades. Howe-ver, this only leaves more superficial engrams in your short-term memory,

which means you’ll forget the things more quickly. Re-member to recognize your motives, as it helps you to change unwelcomed study patterns.

When you have prioritized studying over Netflix and are about to open your textbook, remember to find connections between concepts, ditch your phone, and think about your motives. These tips may up your stu-dying game to the next level. •

The Desired FiveTop Tips from the Learn How to Learn -workshop

Text and picture by Aino Saarelainen

Aiming for a higher GPA? Look no further. In February, the BScBA 16s’ class representatives or-ganized a learning workshop. The event featured our own students’ study tips, as well as a guest speaker’s lecture. Here are the best guidelines combined.

”Do something today so you don’t

have to do it tomorrow.”

Meet the New BABU Board

For a short but (hopefully!) memorable personal description, I found those five phases would portray me best: (1) An extroverted introvert. (2) A creative maverick. (3) An aspiring economist-to-be. (4) A down-to-earth dreamer. (5) A full-time life-lover.

- Felix, Advisor

The new board of BABU, Mikkeli’s own business club, has been chosen, so it’s time to get to know the board better through these short introductions. Remember to keep an eye out for their upcoming events!

Of course I am excited to join the new board with my amazing teammates. As I will be in charge of tailoring the detailed plans for our upcoming events, I am ea-ger to receive your feedback and sugges-tions so that we can improve altogether. Let’s roll to work. - Rachel, Content Manager

My main passions include philanthropy, travelling and learning new languages. I am very excited for the next year being a part of BABU. - Elsa, Logistics and External Coordinator

I am dedicated to make you know BABU events and want to join! - Franklin, Marketing Manager

I am proud to be a responsible, funny, and energetic advisor. - Noah, Advisor

On March 1st, the corridors of the campus were filled with Babas from various generations, when the annual event Career Day took place. A group of alumni returned to their good old school to tell the students about what they have done after having gra-duated from Aalto.

The range of companies represented was diverse – Ro-vio, Alma Media and OP among others. The presentations that I listened to were Vainu.io, L’Oréal, Accenture and Unile-ver.

A t h e m e that was brought forth

in all of the four presen-tations was marketing. For

example, Miikka Jokela from Vainu.io presented pro tips on

how to make a successful career in marketing. Among other thin-

gs, Jokela mentioned that you should start blogging, learn to code, and most

importantly: fake it till you make it.

Minna Martikainen from L’Oréal highlighted the im-portance of effective team work, as well as the signi-ficance of knowing what your customers really want from you and your products.

Julia Romanuyk, who graduated from Mikkeli only few years ago and currently works at Accenture, point-ed out in her presentation that Mikkeli times taught

her many skills that have been crucial in her career so far. For example, the three-week module system taught Ro-manuyk to learn fast and work hard. What is more, according to Romanuyk, Mikkeli teaches excellent

networking skills, which are essential in today’s la-bor market.

The fourth presentation was from Unilever, Jonna Sa-lonen and Juho Mikkonen as speakers. In their pre-sentation, in addition to introducing what it is like to do marketing at Unilever, Salonen and Mikkonen tal-ked about the advantages of working in a big corpo-ration. The career opportunities are vast, and you get an opportunity to influence globally, but also locally. •

8HIIT, plyometrics, and jump-training are one of the best and most effective ways to both increase your muscle mass and explosive strength as well as burn fat and speed up your metabolism at the same time. In this workout all of them are incorporated. A lot of different jumping exercises to get your blood (and ideas for the essays) flowing and some isolating exercises for the glute-muscle to really hunt down that pump. You can do this workout either at home or outside. A little fresh air never bad, right?

Do 10 reps of each exercise, have a 10 second break in between exercises and repeat the whole thing four times. Do this workout once or twice a week and add extra challenge as you get stronger.

Jumping JacksA perfect classic exercise to pump some blood to your muscles and get the sweat dripping! Repeat 10 times.

You’re home for about an hour or two, and in that time you need to make yourself something to eat, do homework, change your clothes, and get out of the door. In other words, you have finished afternoon classes at 4pm and you have to be somewhere fun at 6-7pm.

Here are some quick and easy food recipes for those busy days. Enjoy!

12Saimaan Juomatehdas

A Brewery from the Shores of Savonia Text by Annu Pelkonen and Aino Saarelainen

But how did the success story of Saimaan Juomatehdas begin?

When Finland joined the European Union in 1995, restaurants were granted the ability to brew their own beers. Restaurateur Pertti Oksa seized the opportuni-ty, and after studying craft beers he was able to start his own brewery in Mikkeli. The microbrewery’s name was Naapuri. In 2002 Oksa acquired Saimaan Panimo Brewery, and then proceeded to open a joint brewe-ry-restaurant Bruuveri in Kamppi, Helsinki in 2006.

In 2011, the brewing company underwent many chan-ges. The name changed to Saimaan Juomatehdas and the product range was clarified, revamped, and the company begun nationwide distribution.

From 2010 to 2012, the production of beer doubled, totaling in 400 000 liters per year. As Saimaan Juomate-has’ business grew larger, the facilities in Lappeenranta started to get too small. Thus, the company built a new factory in Mikkeli in 2013. In the process, Saimaan Juo-matehdas widened their product selection from beers to siders. In 2016, the new factory produced approxi-mately 1,5 million liters of product per year.

The CEO Answers

Jussi Laukkanen, the CEO of Saimaan Juomatehas, started his career in the company while he was a stu-dent, by doing both bachelor’s and master’s theses for the company. Laukkanen gave an interview for Bulle-tin, answering everything we wanted to know about the company and his career.

How did you end up at Saimaan juomatehdas?

As a student, I had a list of attractive companies that I was interested in working for. When I was doing my bachelor’s thesis, I called Pertti Oksa, the former ow-

ner and CEO of Saimaan Juomatehdas, and showed my interest in helping the company develop its brand stra-tegy. I managed to schedule a meeting concerning my thesis, and after the discussion we agreed on the topic of my thesis.

After my bachelor’s thesis, I got a request to do my mas-ter’s thesis for the company, and when I finished my masters, I was offered a job. I have moved forward on my career one step at a time.

What kind of skills do you need in your job?

In my opinion, you can succeed with various different skills. Usually people who are in manager positions tend to be outgoing, ambitious and they handle uncer-tainty well. The managers want to take - and delegate - responsibilities, and they must be able to make deci-sions under pressure.

One particular skill, which will help you in your career, is self-knowledge. I think knowing your own streng-ths and weaknesses, so you can use your strengths in your favor and improve your weaknesses. In addition to the skills mentioned earlier, the ability to motivate and improve you employees is vital while building a successful organization.

What is it like to manage a brewery?

Fascinating, motivating, and rewarding. It has taught me a lot.

Saimaan Juomatehas, a Mikkeli-born company, is a pioneer in the Finnish brewery industry. The family business specializes in high-quality beers and siders made from natural and ecological Finnish ingredients. In addition, the company supports green values and local production. No wonder their products have won various awards both in Finland and abroad.

”The ability to motivate and improve you employees is vital while building a successful organization.”

Page 13: 1 BULLETIN II/2017 - Probbaprobba.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Bulletin-2-2017-2.pdf · Step back and come back up, bring your leg to the front and squeeze your glutes. Repeat 10x

13While we expanded the business to its current sta-te, there were both successes and failures. During the process, the most important thing has been the trust in our vision, and the ability to learn from our mistakes. In smaller companies, you both get to do and have to do a lot of different tasks, which broadens your know-how effectively. However, this also means that there might be no time to focus on very detailed things.

The will to succeed has driven our company to reach higher and higher goals. It is gratifying to work with a motivated team, and we have managed to build a wor-king community that is genuinely proud of its work and products.

What is your typical day at work like?

I try to balance my weeks in a way that I spend two days a week at the brewery. During those days I attend mee-tings, try to solve every day problems, and urge thin-gs forward. I try to an office day without any meetings once week, so I can focus on specific things for a longer period of time. For the rest of the days I have meetings and I also take care of mundane tasks. In general, my days are filled with a few meetings, several phone calls and numerous e-mails.

Is it easy for a microbrewery to enter the market, gain visibility and get a customer base?

The local companies seem to be entering the market quite effortlessly, as long as they sell products and their brand is good shape. It could cost anything between hundred thousand to couple of million euros, depen-ding on the scale of the market.

As many new breweries have entered the market in recent years, the competition has increased. Getting national visibility has become harder. Nowadays there are also multiple microbreweries who don’t have their own equipment, and their production is outsourced to subcontractors in Finland and Europe. At least from our company’s point of view, there is much more supply than there is demand in the craft beer market.

What kind of opportunities does Saimaan juo-matehdas offer to business students?

During the last few years, students have done several theses for us, both bachelor’s and master’s.

What three tips would you give a student for their fututre career?

1. It’s good to think about your interests while studying. Choose courses according to your interests and keep on track of the companies in those intriguing areas of business. 2. Don’t be afraid to throw yourself into new situations and tasks that are out of your comfort zone. It teaches

you a lot. 3. It’s easier to network while studying t han

during a busy working life. Live your student life to the fullest! •

”We have managed to build a working community that is

genuinely proud of its workand products.”
