ten Metalls versprechen.

For 40 years a research has been carried on a
new form of raw material, the so-called metal
foams. The procedure is similar to the one of mak-
ing bread. Metal powder is mixed with a propellant, pressed into a compact preparatory product and then
foamed by the procedure of heat treatment. The re-
sulting material has numerous advantages in relation
to traditional solid materials. It is more inflexible for
example and shows a more proportionate deforma-
tion caused by a different distribution of energy. So
far not much was known about metal foams because
of the expensive process of manufacturing. But since
new procedures have been invented in the last 15
years, new metallurgical methods are available
nowadays, which promise a better quality of the
foamed metal.

clear layer of aluminium foam have been developed.
This procedure is protected by patent.
The procedure goes like this:
The powdery metallic raw material is mixed in-
tensively with a propellant (for example titaniumhydroxide). The resulting mixture is compressed
and, when needed, worked up by transformation.
The compression is caused by axial pressing with
heat. As far as the exterior is concerned the resulting
material is not different from the original one. The
interesting thing is only that this metal can be
foamed. By heating the mixture roughly above the
melting- point the metal is melted, the gas of the
propellant is set free and in this way the foaming
occurs. The melting fusion expands and develops a
half-liquid foaming consistence. After the expansionhas reached the desired temperature, the foaming
procedure is stopped by cooling below its melting-
Generally the procedure to obtain foam products involves 4 basic steps:
• melting the desired aluminium alloy;
• transferring the molten material to the foaming box;
• injecting gas to form liquid foam;
• solidifying the liquid foam into desired shape.

point. In this way the foaming structure is stabilized
and a highly porous raw material is produced which
has a proportional structure of pores. This prepara-
tory material is laminated by a special procedure soas to obtain sandwich tinplate. In this way highly-
porous aluminium foam is produced by layers free
of pores only by using conventional tin materials.
So far the procedure has been successful for alu-
minium alloy, tin, zinc, bronze, brass and lead. It has
been proved that aluminium and its alloys are more
interesting for the research because of the wider
spectrum of appliance.
Properties of Metal Foam
Due to their highly porous structures, foams have
a high specific stiffness. Aluminium foam shows
good mechanical damping and sound insulation
properties. Metal foam provides excellent energy
absorption features at the higher strength level as
compared to foamed polymers. The wide range of
service temperatures and the flammability of the ma-terial are important advantages. Finally, the material
is easily recycled.

Oktober 1998 in Gra-
verfahrens, Joachim Baumeister, vom IFAM ver-
liehen.
verfahren eingesetzt. Dabei werden
während des Erhitzens zwischen
500 und 1000 hochauflösende
Röntgenaufnahmen gemacht, die
den Schäumprozeß in seiner zeitli-
chen Entwicklung abbilden. Alumi-
niumschaum findet gegenwärtig
Anwendung in verschiedensten Be-
chenstruktur anpassen.

The Future of Metal
Foams
At present experts are
working on the refinement
of the production. They
want to expand their
knowledge about the be-
haviour of foaming and develop foams with a morehomogeneous structure of pores. In order to control
the behaviour of foaming, a certain procedure of X-
rays is applied. During the procedure of
heating roughly 500 and 1000 X-ray photo-
graphs are made which show the temporal
development of the foaming procedure.
At the moment aluminium foam is used
in different fields, for example in car indus-
try, space industry, navigation and railway
industry where the quality of damping and
the reduced heat conductivity is used above
all for refrigerating lorries. Even in the field
of medicine metal foams can be applied. It
has been proved that metal foams can adapt
to the structure of bones because of their
porosity. This knowledge can be used in the
field of dental implantations. Generally,
experts show interest in applying as many
qualities as possible of the aluminium foams because
they are still rather expensive at present.
