Scott Klein - Prediction for 2014: Scooped by Code http://www.niemanlab.org/2013/12/scooped-by-code/
„You can be a good journalist without being able to do lots of things. But every skill you don’t have leaves a whole class of stories out of your reach. And data stories are usually the ones that are hiding in plain sight.“

Getting the data
Typische Stories in Daten (1)
• Top of the pops/flops: who is top or bottom?
• ‘Holding up a mirror’ - or ‘the face behind the
figures’: what does the data tell us about ourselves as a country, industry or region?
• A freak occurrence/unusual change: what
changed in the data from one time or place to another - and why?
Typische Stories in Daten (2)
• A claim debunked or supported: does the data
support claims being made by a politician, ‘expert’ orpundit?
• Trend: what’s going up or going down?
• Postcode lottery: are people in different places
getting different treatment or access, or being chargeddifferently?
Typische Stories in Daten (3)
• “Juking the stats”/“No accountability”: is the data
reliable or complete? Or is someone trying toprevent people seeing it? Or is it not even collected in the first place? Why not?
• Victims, Winners and Losers: what’s the impact of
that data in real life? What are the human stories -including reaction to the data itself?
Typische Stories in Daten (4)
• Things happen together: does one thing go up
when another thing goes up? Or does one thing go down when another goes up, or vice versa? Note thatthis does not mean causation.
• “It’s not working”: if someone made a change in
the past about how things were done, has it had the impact that was promised?
