WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Helping your child become a writer by:• Readingtothem3to5bookseveryday.

• Takingthemplacesthatwillfeedtheirimagination eg. the park, the playground, the farm, the zoo, the snow, the beach, the local library or the Henty Field Days. Talk to them about the experience.

• Encouragingthemtodrawandtalkingtothemabout their drawings.

• Showingthemhowyouwrite(withapen,onthe computer, on the phone).

• Teachingthemhowtowritetheirnameandif they are interested, write other people’s names.

• Encouragingthemtowriteandgivingthemreasons eg. cards, invitations or recipes.

• Drawingwiththem.

•Drawingwiththemandaddinglabelstosome of their drawings.

•Loadingfreedrawingappsontoyour‘hand held’ computer for them to use.

You can support your child by:

•Encouragingthemtotalkaboutthethings that interest them in the books you read to them.

•Encouragingthemtotellyouabouttheirday e.g. Who did you play with in the sand pit at preschool today? What stories did the teacher read to you? Did you learn any new songs?

•Encouragingthemtotalkastheydraw.

•Lettingyourchildseeyouwriteandtalking to them about the different purposes for writing.
