The “ruhrbasics“ form the basis for the joint

approachFive subject areas will determine the development

of the Metropole Ruhr in the next decade: ruhrlines,

ruhrcities, ruhrexcellence, ruhrinvest and

ruhrevent .

Each theme is conceived in the regional context,

each project has a regional and local effect.

The ruhrbasics offer orientation for the

approximately 350 projects.

Konzept Ruhr is advanced regularly with regard to

its strategy and its projects.

In 2008, 17 towns and 4 districts of the Metropole Ruhr joined up with the district of Steinfurt to develop a strategy for dealing with the anticipated end of coal mining by 2018: Change as an opportunity

Content

Framework conditions for the change in the municipalities/sub-regions

Principles of joint action Areas of action for a co-ordinated strategy for all stakeholders Specific, local and regionally-oriented projects

Three central areas of action

Reuse + develop: The sites of the change Renew + invent: The technological transition Promote + support: The educational region Ruhr 2018

Change as an opportunity and its projects aim to work actively to preempt the phase after the end of coal mining for the Metropole Ruhr and the district of Steinfurt. An intermunicipal working group co-ordinates all activities. (Wandel als Chance 2010)

Metropole Ruhr | Overview of clusters

What are clusters?Economic fields in which particular economic strengths exist that contribute to regional growth, innovation and employment, networks and co-operation exist between research, development and companies that have distinct

innovative energy, new applications are tested, experiences exchanged and technologies and products developed and

marketed jointly.

Clusters in the Metropole Ruhr are energy, logistics, chemicals and healthcare.

What are cross-sectional technologies?Cross-sectional technologies are technologies whose areas of application are not limited to one specific industry, but that are used in all sectors.

Important cross-sectional technologies in the region are microsystem technology, nanotechnology and materials technology (so-called cutting-edge technologies) as well as information and communication technologies.

The Metropole Ruhr uses these cluster technologies to present itself in the competition for national and international locations.
