What are clusters?Economic fields in which particular economic strengths exist that contribute to regional growth, innovation and employment, networks and co-operation exist between research, development and companies that have distinct

innovative energy, new applications are tested, experiences exchanged and technologies and products developed and

marketed jointly.

Clusters in the Metropole Ruhr are energy, logistics, chemicals and healthcare.

What are cross-sectional technologies?Cross-sectional technologies are technologies whose areas of application are not limited to one specific industry, but that are used in all sectors.

Important cross-sectional technologies in the region are microsystem technology, nanotechnology and materials technology (so-called cutting-edge technologies) as well as information and communication technologies.
