All open type vertical motors offered by U.S.Motors features a NEMA WPI enclosure asstandard. It is designed to minimize the

entrance of contaminants and airborne debriswhile protecting the internal components.Also, it is designed to prevent a 3/4 inchdiameter rod from passing into the motor.

A unique feature of U.S. Motors' WPI designis the motor's air flow pattern. Cooling air isdrawn in through the motor and exhausted insuch a way to avoid drawing any pumped fluidsinto the motor should the pump's packing sealor mechanical seal fail. Furthermore, corrosion

resistant screens and grills cover all openingspreventing snakes, rodents, etc., from enteringthe motor. This is our standard product foroutdoor service.

Product Overview

Our Weather Protected Type I (WPI)Holloshaft motors are constructed tominimize the entrance of rain, snow andairborne particles. Our enclosures exceedNEMA requirements because U.S. Motorshas built in the extra protection needed forrugged outdoor applications. The ventilationsystem is designed to provide optimumcooling to the thrust bearing and electricalcomponents and is available in all motor sizes.

These motors allow for easy pump impelleradjustment and maintain alignment of pumpbase to motor drive clutches. Steady bushingsare available to give the mechanicalcharacteristics of a solid shaft motor.

In our design concept, the high thrust verticalmotor is arranged into four functional zones -the top zone is small and light to assuresimplified access to the coupling area and

inspection of the thrust bearing. Below this isthe coupling area and the essential elementsof thrust bearings with a large weatherprotected air intake to cool the motor and thrustbearing.

Next, the center, or winding section, developsthe driving torque and includes the latestInsulife insulation systems. And below, themounting base is compact and designed formomentary upthrust of the pump.

The benefit of the four zone design is a motorwhich is more easily installed and serviced andwhich allow operator protection andconvenience.

Our non-reverse ratchet, The Ball-O-Matic, is without question the finest

ratchet available. The Ball-O-Matic preventsreverse rotation within 4.5 degrees of rotation,has unlimited depth setting and can be usedin explosionproof applications.

Our Inverter Duty product offers an InverterGradeinsulation system with superior pulseendurance to withstand the waveform stressesproduced by the PWM drives. In addition tothe pulse resistant magnet wire, our protectionsystem includes additional lacing on end turns,phase paper and additional dips and bakes.This system meets the stringent requirementsoutlined in NEMA MG-1, Part 31.

Many extra features, accessories and

manufacturing steps have been incorporatedinto our vertical motor designs to improve theoverall performance and greatly extend motorlife. Available modifications include specialaltitude, special ambient temperatures,special balance and copper bar rotors.Available accessories include currenttransformers, space heaters, lightningarrestors and protective devices for bearings,windings and vibration.

Vertical Holloshaft WPI

All vertical products are supplied with theInsulifewinding system. For low voltageNEMA frame products, the copper woundstator core is insulated with non-hydroscopicClass F or H rated materials, and is thentreated with polyester varnish for extramoisture protection. Vacuum pressureimpregnation (VPI) is an available option onframes 320 and larger.

Medium voltage form wound motors are

wound with Class F or Class H materials andare treated with two complete cycles of 100%solid epoxy VPI. This produces a minimum of6 mils insulation build. U.S. Motors does notmanufacture random wound medium voltagemotors for quality reasons. Our Eversealsealed winding system is an available optionfor form wound machines.

Another option available on our VerticalMotors is Inverter GradeInsulation System.U.S. Motors was the first motor company torecognize that the pulse width modulation(PWM) adjustable frequency technologyoffered substantial payoff in better equipmentcontrol and increased energy savings, but italso created new challenges for existing motorinsulation systems.
