OPENING EVENTBuilding for the real estate and housing industries Moderation: Sandra Burlet, Lignum – Holzwirtschaft Schweiz, Zurich (SUI)Large-volume, multi-storey building with wood for the real estate and housing industries is spreading rapidly. As a result, wood construc-tion is increasingly competing with mineral-based construction for investment properties. To succeed in this market, it must assert itself in a direct comparison of economic indicators. Transparency increases the pressure to further simplify, digitize, standardize and industrialize wood construction in order to reduce costs. Industry 4.0 processes and procedures are in demand to maintain and expand the technical advantage of wood construction over the competition. The advantages in terms of better construction quality and shorther constructiontime are gaining weight. The ecological features, however, remain the ace for wood in the sustainability discourse and thus continue to have a strong impact on investors.

Pre-conference seminar IIPrefabricated housing forum Organized by the European Society for Prefabricated Housing, Bad Honnef (GER)

Market changes in the wood construction value chain. How will wood (house) construction change? Moderation: Georg Lange, Bundesverband Deutscher Fertigbau (BDF), Bad Honnef (GER) and Christian Murhammer, Österreichischer Fertighausverband (ÖFV), Vienna (AUT)For years, wood-based construction methods have been gaining market share and are thus asserting themselves against the obsta-cles. New players are appearing, especially those who were previously known for concrete and masonry construction. Beyond that, wood construction is receiving political support and so does serial produc-tion as it combines the core goals of modern politics: digitization, sustainability and rapid processing – all necessary ingredients for a climate-neutral future. The wood construction is ready for the tasks ahead and the necessary transformations.

Xaver Haas, Unternehmer (GER)The entrepreneur, born in 1948 and living Falkenberg, is one of the best-known personalities in the wood industry. Xaver Haas was the youngest carpenter to acquire the craft master‘s title in 1969. His com-pany of wood construction and wood products established European standards. He has contributed and continues to contribute to numer-ous committees and organizations in a leading position for the timber industry, such as Chair of the timber industry council. His achievements have received numerous awards, such as the Federal Cross of Merit, the Bavarian Order of Merit and the carpentry trade golden badge of honor.

Prof. Jürgen Krug, Technische Hochschule Rosenheim (GER) Born in 1941, the scientist studied architecture at the RWTH Univer-sity in Aachen. After working in well-known architectural offices, e.g. Behnisch & Partner and the construction planning for the 1972 Olympic summer games in Munich 1972, he founded the architecture office, KRUG GROSSMANN ARCHITREKTEN. From 1980 to 2006 he was a pro-fessor in Rosenheim what is now the Technical University, where he still teaches the master’s course in wood construction. In his career, he has realized well-known wood construction projects such as the Law Faculty building in Augsburg. He is still active today and is currently planning a tall wood building for mixed use in Mietraching / Bad Aibling.

TIMBER STRUCTURES – Wood structures are unique and different from other structures from an environmental point of view. As a natural and renewable resource, wood has qualities that are vital to our survival. If wood as a building material did not exist, we would have to invent it. Accordingly, all stakeholders in the construction industry are called upon to ensure that wood plays a greater role as a construction material than in the recent past.

Block A Exposed engineering structuresModeration: Prof. Dr. Philipp Dietsch, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Karlsruhe (GER) Modern manufacturing techniques not only allow simple, straight constructions but also arcs or free forms. These advances result in applications for exposed engineering structures such as visible roofs, towers or bridges. If the knowledge of constructive wood protection is appropriately taken into account when planning, structures are cre-ated in interaction with other building materials that are particularly attractive not only to timber engineers.

Block CFuture concepts for multi-storey wood construction Moderation: Prof. Andreas Müller, Bern University of Applied Sciences, Biel/Bienne (SUI)Multi-storey timber construction has been established worldwide with a large number of tall buildings with wood load-resisting sys-tems in recent years. Since the early days of multi-storey building with wood, individual pilot projects have now become consistently optimized construction systems. In addition to the required cost-ef-fectiveness, special attention is also paid to a high level of safety, durability and robustness. In addition to the planning security, many investors appreciate the aspects of sustainability and the profession-al planning and implementation processes, which reduce the risks compared to conventional construction methods, leading to excellent returns on the building.

08.30 Living wood – growing furniture? Presentations followed by a discussion forumProf. Dr. Jörg Müller, Universität WürzburgProf. Dr. Tobias Stern, Universität Graz

As a result of climate change, certain competing uses for forest and wood are becoming more evident. Which raw materials can be replaced by wood? Under what conditions does this make sense? What framework conditions have to be created? At the same time, climate change is creat-ing opportunities in our commercial forests that promote highly endangered species. It is all the more important to carefully consider the alternatives.

10.30 More diversity in the forest and more timber construction – does it fit together?

Presentations followed by a discussion forumProf. Dr. Rupert Seidl, Technische Universität München, München (GER)Prof.i.R. Dr. Alfred Teischinger

The climate is changing rapidly and societal demands on nature are also changing. As a consequence, the forest of the future will also change - it will become more colorful and diverse and contain a new spectrum of tree species. What does this mean for wood construction? Does more diversity in the forest mean less wood construction or is it an oppor-tunity for more diversity in construction? How can the forest and wood supply be brought into balance for the future construction? Experts will discuss the expected changes in the forest and the resulting technological challenges.
