    As the long summer days wind down, we have begun preparations or the Fall academic activities. Arrange

    or the C dopm Co, now in its 3rd year, are complete, thanks to the Course Co-C

    Drs. Scott LeMaire and Eric Kimchi. T 18 Fm of sc rc Co, chai

    Dr. Siobhan Corbett, promises to eature outstanding speakers on a variety o topics. Based on eedback

    prior courses, the course organizers have expanded the panel discussions to acilitate an interactive, pro

    solving approach to many issues acing young academic surgeons. I urge you to bring your questions, pro

    and success stories so that we may all learn rom each others experience.

    I am also proud to announce that arrangements have been made to present a combined version o botcourses in conjunction with the 48 a M of W afc Co of so (W

    in 2008. Tanks to the generous support o our industry partners and the leadership o the AAS and W

    the inaugural Fundamentals o Surgical Research and Development Course is scheduled or early Feb

    2008 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Te Development Committee and Dr. Ben Nwomeh have worked ver

    to realize this goal. We are grateul or their eorts and look orward to a productive collaboration wi

    West Arican College o Surgeons.

    As a direct result o the eorts o the Membership and Inormation echnology Committees, our C

    approved a new initiative in collaboration with the Society o University Surgeons and the American C

    o Surgeons to combine our eorts on medical student and resident recruitment to Academic Surger

    rst o these eorts will be the design and production o an educational DVD to capture the myriad r

    to choose academic surgery as a career. Committee Chairs, Drs. Peter Nelson and Jeery Upperman, be congratulated or their tireless eorts to move this project orward.

    At the strategic retreat in June, our Council approved the creation o two AAS International V

    Proessorships to acilitate collaboration between AAS members and our international colleagues who m

    interested in academic surgical projects. Te Royal Australasian College o Surgeons and the aiwan Su

    Society have expressed interest in partnering with the AAS in this regard. I am delighted that the Nomi

    Committee chose Dr. Scott Lemaire and Dr. Daniel Albo as the inaugural AAS visitors to RACS an

    aiwan Surgical Society, respectively. I have no doubt that they will both represent the AAS ully.

    By now abstract submission or the Academic Surgical Congress in February 2008 is complete, an

    Recorder, Dr. Albo, has reported almost a 20% increase in the abstract submission rate or the meetin

    judging by the quality o abstracts, I anticipate another outstanding meeting. I look orward to seeing y

    abstracts or oral presentations during the 2008 ASC. Te abstracts will be allocated to the appro

    session (plenary, parallel or quick-shot) session based on abstract scores. Tese abstracts will be rev

    by the Program Committee in a blinded ashion together with all other abstracts submitted to the

    At a minimum, a quick-shot oral presentation will be GUARANEED or abstracts submitted by

    Medical Students to ensure their participation in the program. In addition, the abstracts receiving t

    10 scores will be re-presented by the medical students as a quick-shot during a special AAS Outsta

    Medical Students session where they will be competing or an award including a certicate, a

    check and a special mention on next years ASC program. Te AAS leadership will be in attenduring this special session.

    ellowship is awarded to candidates who have made outstanding contributions to the art and science o s

    and allows the candidate to personally present their newer techniques and innovations to surgical coll

    in countries around the world. Each year two to ve surgeons are selected to receive the raveling Fello

    Dr. Olutoye has visited hospitals in the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam and will travel th

    to South Arica and Nigeria.

    England, Scotland and the United States so that surgeons rom around the world could be brought to

    to exchange ideas and techniques regarding surgery. Te aim o the Association is to oster the exchan

    knowledge among distinguished surgeons in countries where English is reely spoken.

    Dr. Olutoye is Associate Proessor o Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department o Surgery at B

    College o Medicine and Co-Director o the exas Childrens Fetal Center in Houston, X. Dr. O

    completed his medical school education in Nigeria and received his Ph.D. in Anatomy rom the Vi

    Commonwealth University. Dr. Olutoye completed his general surgery residency at the Medical Coll

    Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, Virginia and his residency in pediatric surgery at the Childrens Ho

    o Philadelphia. Dr. Olutoye has done postdoctoral research ellowships in the Wound Healing Labo

    at the Medical College o Virginia Hospitals as well as the Center or Fetal Diagnosis and reatment

    Childrens Hospital o Philadelphia. Dr. Olutoye has specialized clinical expertise in etal surgery, cong

    diaphragmatic hernia and management o complex wounds.

    Dr. Olutoyes research interests include understanding the role o the etal inammatory response in s

    etal wound healing, development o animal models o congenital anomalies, in utero correction o

    congenital malormations, and the study o endothelial-leukocyte and endothelial-tumor cell intera

    with a goal to better understand the mechanisms o tumor metastasis. Dr. Olutoyes research on Selec

    Fetal Wound Healing is unded by the NIH, and previously by the Amos Medical Fellowship o the R

    Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr Olutoye is a Fellow o the American College o Surgeons and o the Am

    Academy o Pediatrics Section on Surgery. He is a member o the Association or Academic Surge

    has served as the Baylor College o Medicine institutional representative to the AAS since 2005 and

    the Committee on Issues.

    Tis award is open to medica l students rom under-represented minorities. As part o the Association o

    Academic Surgerys mission to increase diversity in our membership, we are pleased to oer the second

    annual AAS Student ravel Grant. Tis award will include a $500 stipend, hotel accommodations, and

    registration or the Academic Surgical Congress in Huntington Beach, CA. It will be presented to a

    medical student rom an under-represented minority. We are soliciting nominations rom departmen

    chairs and clerkship directors. Eligible candidates should submit an essay and a letter o support rom

    their chairperson or clerkship director. Te essay should be no more than 300 words in length and ocus

    on the candidates commitment to becoming a leader in academic surgery. Te deadline or RECEIP appla 11:59 p nvb 1, 2007.

    Awarded every even year

    Te intent o this award is to provide an eligible Resident or Fellow who has completed at least two years

    o postgraduate training in a surgical discipline the opportunity to spend two years in ull-time research

    or clinical studies with an AAS member. Te award o $15,000 per year or two years may be used or

    salary support or or the direct-cost expenditures o the research. Te award is to be expended solely or

    the purpose o the sponsored research. Funding or the Award will begin July 1, 2008. Te deadline or

    Te AAS Executive Committee would like to congratulate Dr. Daniel Albo and Dr. Scott LeMaire

    or receiving the rst AAS International Visiting Proessorship Award! Dr. Albo will be attending the

    aiwan Surgical Association meeting and Dr. LeMaire will be attending the Royal Australasian College

    o Surgeons meeting. In exchange, both the SA and RACS will be choosing representatives to attend

    the ASC meeting on behal o their respective societies. Te visiting proessorship award was designed to

    urther oster the AAS international relations and to learn more about what other countries are working
