Targeta getA laser hohlraum target, shown here, is a few‐millimeter sized cylinder that contains the fuel
l L b h i fcapsule. Laser beams are shown entering from the ends. Where the beams strike the hohlraum'swall their energy is a re‐radiated in the form of x‐rays (appearing as orange dots). The fuel forrays (appearing as orange dots). The fuel for inertial confinement fusion is contained in a small fuel capsule with a diameter of about a millimeter (approximately 0.5 mm for current experiments, 2
f i i ifi i i i d imm for next‐generation scientific ignition designs and ultimately 5 mm for full scale energy or defense applications).Fuel capsules are illuminated directly by laser p y y
beams or indirectly by laser or ion beams, and can be compressed or heated by either type of beams. The fuel capsule absorbs the beams
til th t f ienergy until the outer surface vaporizes explosively. The exploding material, firing like a rocket away from the deuterium‐tritium fuel, compresses the D‐T to 20 times the density of p ylead and 50 million degrees until it ignites in a fusion reaction.Credit: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
ELIELI would be the first infrastructure dedicated to the fundamental study of laser‐matter interaction in a new and unsurpassed regime of laser intensity: the ultra‐relativistic regime (IL>1023 W/cm²). At its centre would be an exawatt‐class laser ~1000 times more powerful than either the Laser Mégajoulein France or the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the US. In contrast to these projects, ELI would attain its extreme power from the shortness of its pulses (femtosecond and attosecond).
