Biodiesel has been used for many yearsin Germany in agricultural machines,regional railways, private cars and taxis.Plants in Austria and Italy produce
biodiesel.A mixture of methyl ester and mineral oildiesel is available in France and theCzech Republic. Production of biodieselis also an attractive proposition in de-veloping countries where supplies ofmineral oil can be problematical.
In Europe, rape has established itself asvirtually the only renewable raw material
for the production of biodiesel. First,because of the price andsecond, the oil extractedfrom other oil seeds con-sists primarily of longerchain fatty acids whichlimit the extent to whichthe biodiesel can be usedduring the winter or suchoil seed is not cultivatedin adequate quantities.One hectare of rape yieldsaround 1300 l rapeseed oil
or the same quantity ofbiodiesel. Producers are
also attempting to make biodiesel fromthe used fat from frying operations.
