– Use of furnaces and sensors
– Use of calibration instruments– Test and control means
AOIP offer:– CALYS 150 and PHP 601 / SHP 601
– DATALOG / SA 32 and TC 6621

AMS 2750 profile: US standard for heat treatment
Origin: US standard for heat treatment, included in the NADCAP*
 Current version: AMS 2750 – D, since September 2005
 Field of application:
AMS 2750 applies to all manufacturers and sub-contractors working for the aircraft industry
Large target: All companies using parts that need to be heat treated (mainly metal parts)
The standard defines the way heat treatment must be performed and more precisely:
– The use of furnaces, sensors and other instruments:
 Different furnace classes
 Different types of authorized sensors
Different levels of instrumentation (number of sensors)
 Different types of calibration instruments
– The test and control means:
Two regular and frequent obligatory tests:
SAT - System Accuracy Test / TUS - Temperature Uniformity Survey
The frequency of SAT and TUS is defined according to the furnace class and the level of instrumentation
* See Appendix I: NADCAP overview
-
AMS 2750 requirements: Use of furnaces and sensors
According to AMS 2750 requirements, thermocouples must be calibrated before first use, then every three or six months.Considering the high recalibration frequency required, companies concerned by AMS 2750 must have their own calibration equipment and / or appoint service companies.
6 different furnaces classes based on the minimum requirements for temperature uniformity Authorized sensors: Thermocouples (Beyond 80°C, Pt100 are not suitable for heat treating )
(Appendix III: Sensor calibration required by AMS 2750)
5 levels of instrumentation determine the number of controls performed on the furnace:(Appendix IV: Levels of instrumentation defined by AMS 2750)
– LOAD control: Temperature sensor placed on the surface of the part being heat treated– MIN/MAX temperature control: Sensors placed at the upper / lower temperature area– SAFETY: One SAFETY sensor at the upper temperature point of each area, to prevent
from overheating– REGULATION: One REGULATION sensor for each area– RECORDING: Recorder or acquisition system to save data from REGULATION sensors
Objective: Guarantee thermocouples are always in good working order and deliver correct values with accuracy below the maximum permitted error.
Method: Determine the frequency of calibration, the instrument used for the calibration and the maximum permitted error according to the type of thermocouple used and the use.
-
AMS 2750 requirements: Use of calibration instruments
Authorized instruments: (Table available on Appendix V: Authorized calibration instruments)Objective: Define the suitable instruments implied in the process of heat treatment and theirminimum required calibration accuracy.
AOIP program covers two types of instruments authori zed by AMS 2750:

No consideration of CJC in AMS 2750: calculation of calibration accuracy is made without CJC.The standard has been published by an American Institute, and thus with the 0°C reference.
These instruments shall be calibrated by NIST or an equivalentnational standard organization, or against standards whose calibration is traceable to NIST or other recognized national equivalent
Calibration of AOIP instruments fully complies with AMS 2750
-
AMS 2750 requirements: Test and control means
Two type of tests performed on furnaces:
SAT: System Accuracy Test
Objective:
Control and certification of the accuracy of data acquisition and control of the system over time
Method:
- Comparison in situ of data recorded with data read on the calibration instrument in order to define temperature gradients and check if they are acceptable
= Localized test of accuracy
TUS: Temperature Uniformity Survey
Objective:
Determine the work zone of a furnace
Method:
- Measure the furnace temperature variation with individually monitored thermocouples inside the furnace before and after temperature stabilization
- Compare the result with the authorized deviation from setpoint
- Apply the test standards set in AMS 2750 for calibration frequency and accuracy
= Acquisition of temperature from different sensors over a certain period of time
The periodicity of SAT and TUS is clearly defined according to the furnace class and the level of instrumentation (Detailed information on Appendix II)
According to AMS 2750 requirements, SAT / TUS must be performed up to once per week .
-
AOIP offer: CALYS 150 and PHP 601 / SHP 601
The standard sets following:The calibration of field test instruments, SAT / TUS sensors, load sensors, and controlling, monitoring, or recording sensors shall be performed by a secondary standard instrument with a minimum accuracy of: ± 0.2°C or ± 0.05% of reading, whichever is greater.
For calibration: Full compliance of CALYS 150 For sensor control: Full compliance of PHP 601 / SHP 601
For every thermocouple used and over the whole range of temperature,
--- CALYS 150 and PHP 601 / SHP 601 are better than A MS tolerance ---
No consideration of CJC in AMS 2750: calculation of calibration accuracy is made without CJC.The standard has been published by an American Institute, and thus with the 0°C reference.

AOIP offer: DATALOG / SA 32 and TC 6621
The standard sets following:The calibration of monitoring, or recording instruments, and the control of SAT / TUS performance shall be performed by a field test instrument with a minimum accuracy of: ± 0.6°C or ± 0.1% of reading in °F, whichever is greater.
For TUS: Full compliance of DATALOG / SA 32For SAT: Full compliance of TC 6621
Over the whole range of temperature,
