SUMMARY

Current position Researcher and Privat-Dozent at the Chair of Grassland Science (Lehrstuhl für Grünlandlehre) of the Wissenschaftszentrum Weihenstephan für Ernährung, Landnuntzung und Umwelt, Technische Universität München.

Presentation I graduated as Ing.Agr. (1996) and made a M.Sc. in Animal Production (1998) at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina). I spent one year at the Macaulay Institute (UK, 2001) as a fellow of The British Council. I got a Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences (2004) and the Habilitation in “Crop Production and Grassland Management” (2012) from the Technische Universität München. I received fellowships from the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, the INTA (Argentina), and the Fundación Antorchas and the British Council.

Scientific Expertise My work focuses on the physiology and agronomy of forage crops. I have developed two lines of research. On one hand, during my Ph.D. and subsequent Habilitation (2000-2012), I studied the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen storage in plants, its mobilization, and its use as substrates for growth and respiration. On the other hand, since 2007, I carry out studies on the role of temperature, nitrogen fertilization and grazing management a determinants of the balance between C3 and C4 species in natural grasslands of Argentina and Uruguay. In a third line of work, developed since 2009, I collaborate with colleagues from the EEA Balcarce of the INTA (Argentina) in diagnosing nitrogen deficiency in forage crops. In a fourth line of work, I collaborate with colleagues of the IFEVA FAUBA (Argentina) since 2012 in studies of the effects of multiple symbioses –mycorrizal fungi, endophyte fungi, and nitrogen fixing bacteria– on the establishment and function of grass/legume mixtures.

As a result of such a diversity of topics, I have acquired skills in a variety of methods and techniques. I am familiar with the use of stable isotopes of carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N), at natural abundance (e.g. to determine water use efficiency in C3 species, to quantify biological nitrogen fixation, to partition C3 vs. C4 carbon), as well as in labeling studies (e.g. to quantify nitrogen uptake, carbon budgets, allocation). I also know how to develop and apply compartmental models to analize isotope’s dynamics. Further, I have experience in the use of the Nitrogen Nutrition Index and SPAD to quantify nitrogen deficiency in crops, and in carrying out grazing experiments with controlled swards state.

Main activities: Research Associate: PI of a DFG/BMZ funded project (2007–2012), PI of a BMBF funded

project (2013–2015) Graduate and postgraduate teaching (Germany and Argentina) Students supervised: 2 PhD (in progress), 2 MSc, 5 undergraduates Private consultant for animal production systems (Argentina)

Publications & Citation metrics: I have published 27 articles (24 indexed in ISI’s Web of Science), and 4 book chapters. Over the last 7 years (2007-2013), my total number of citations increased from 31 to 302, and my h-index, from 3 to 11.

POSITIONS, EMPLOYMENT & FELLOWSHIPS 2005 – to date* Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, Technische Universität München

My job is to carry out independent research. Further, I teach ~110 hs/year: a course on Futterbausysteme for undergraduates, and on a course on The use of stable isotopes for graduates. My most important research project–“Ecophysiological mechanisms controlling the balance between C3 and C4 species in grasslands, with emphasis on responses to nitrogen loading”– was carried out between 2007 and 2012, and involved 15 people, including a MSc student, a PhD candidate, and a posdoctoral fellow. Currently, I work on the project “MULTISYMB: Ecosystem functioning with multiple symbiotic interactions: endophyte-grass-mycorrhiza-rhizobium-legume”, and I collaborate with students working in projects involving 13C-labeling, both at our Chair and in other institutions.

2007 – 2008 Profesor Libre at the Escuela de posgrado, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina). I was responsible for two courses for postgraduates while working in Argentina in the framework of a research project.

2001 Award for Postgraduate Studies, The British Council & Fundación Antorchas, The Macaulay Institute (Scotland, UK) An award to spend one year at The Macaulay Institute in Scotland (UK). I studied the influx of nitrate in mature vs. growing roots of a C3 and C4 grasses, and its response to defoliation.

2000 & 2002 – 2004

Doctoral fellow, Technische Universität München A study on the use of carbon and nitrogen for leaf growth in a C3 and a C4 grasses growing in hierarchically structured mixtures (i.e. C3- vs. C4-dominated): the response to defoliation, and the role of stores.

1998 – 1999 Private consultant for animal production systems (Argentina) Evaluation of alternative land-use options and design of specific cattle production systems in Argentina, including forecasted economical results and sensitivity to variations in prices and intensification level.

1996 – 1998 Fellowship for Initiation in Research, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina) A fellowship that financed my MSc. I studied the response to nitrogen fertilizer of tall fescue cultivars of temperate and mediterranean origin.

1995 – 1996 Fellowship for Students, Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA, Argentina) A fellowship that financed the last years of my undergraduate studies. I studied leaf growth of annual forage crops during winter.

1994 – 1995 Fellowship for Advanced Students, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina) A fellowship that financed my Ing.Agr. thesis on the grazing time and daily grazing pattern of cattle.

* On paternity leave (Elternzeit) during Aug 2008 – Jan 2009, and Aug 2013 – Dec 2014.

Ecophysiological mechanisms controlling the balance between C3 and C4 species in grasslands, with emphasis on responses to nitrogen loading (link). Jan 2007/Jan 2012. Financed by: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) & Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit (BMZ) (LA 2390/1-1) € 278.573.- This project involved two foreign counterparts: Dr. Mónica G. Agnusdei (INTA, Argentina) and Ing.Agr. Ricardo M. Rodríguez Palma (Facultad de Agronomía, Universidad de la República, Uruguay). Our aim was to understand the mechanisms that control the response of the balance between C3 and C4 species to nitrogen fertilization in the Río de la Plata grasslands. For this, I developed a facility to label in situ with 13CO2, which we used to measure carbon assimilation and allocation in plants of different species in experiments including fertilization and grazing treatments in subtropical and temperate grasslands. I supervised a MSc student (F. Murray), a PhD student (G.D. Berone), and a post-doctoral fellow (X.Y. Gong).

HIGHER EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS (Hochschuldidaktische Zusatzqualifikationen) I obtained the Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern (link) by completing a series of courses and activities within the Prolehre programme (link) that provide both theoretical background and practical experience on a set of teaching methods for different academic situations (small vs. large groups, lectures vs. workshops vs. seminars), including how to use body language and voice effectively, how to give constructive feedback, how to structure a course meaningfully, and how to lead discussions. I also learnt the basis of assessing students, particularly the importance of transparent evaluation criteria and valuation standards to ensure fairness of the grading, and the value of seminar papers as a learning opportunity for students and teachers. Arbeitseinheiten for each Themenbereiche (A/Didaktik, B/Rhetorik, C/Prüfen, D/Evaluation, E/Beratung, F/Lehrberatung, G/Hospitation. Arbeitseinheiten à 45 min). Kurstitel A B C D E F G

OTHER

Private Consultant on Animal Production Systems During 1999, I advised Ing.Agr. J. Fornieles (link) on the design of cow-calf and fattening operations at the ranches “Ea. La Isabelita” (cattle breeding and fattening of heifers), “Ea. Doña Juana” (fattening of heifers and steers), and “Ea. Los Ángeles” (cattle breeding), in the SE of the Buenos Aires province (Argentina). This work involved the analysis of alternative land-use options, designing specific animal production systems (forage production system and animal requirements), forecasting physical and economical results, and carrying out sensitivity analysis to variations in prices and in the level of intensification. For this, I created Excel sheets that allow to define forage resources, calculate animal requirements (based on ARC 1980), estimate the need of forage reserves, and highlight possible bottle-necks of the system in terms of forage quality and animal intake.
