So wouldn’t it be nice tohave an intelligent receiv-er that gets to know yourviewing preferences? As amatter of fact, TC Unterh-altungselektronik AG offers just that and has given itthe name Fernsehfee. Whata strange-sounding name, you may think, and for non-

German-speakers it maywell have a funny ring to it,but what it actually means istelevision fairy, and that de-scription quite neatly sumsup what this box can be foryou. To make things a biteasier for our internationalreadership, we’ll use Tel-eFairy for this receiver, theEnglish name introduced bythe manufacturer itselffor its Fernsehfeedevice. The

rst version of the TeleFairywas introduced in TELE-au-diovision 01-02/2014, andnow the manufacturer haslaunched the next genera-tion of this intelligent re-ceiver. While many featuresand functions have beencompletely revamped forthe new model, it still focus-es on viewers of German-language TV channels. So to

be fair, it is best matched toASTRA 19.2 East reception.

At rst contact, the moststriking feature of the Tel-eFairy 2.0 is its truly elegantappearance. The whole de-vice has a smartly designedand very organised look andfeel – perhaps a taste ofwhat is to follow? The frontpanel is made up of two sta-tus LEDs, an On/Standbybutton and the IR receiver. And that’s it. It’s a slightlydifferent story for the backpanel, which features allnecessary connection op-tions such as DVB-S2 signalinput, three RCA jacks forstereo audio and video, anRJ45 network port, HDMI

output, WiFi antenna and asocket for connecting theexternal power supply unit.A total of four USB ports aswell as an SD card readerare available so that theTeleFairy 2.0 can also shine

as a PVR receiver or mediaplayer for externally storedmultimedia content. ThoseUSB ports and the card slotare all located on the leftside of the box.

The remote control thatcomes with the device sits inyour hand quite pleasantly, comes with an unusually thindesign and boasts a clearlylaid out and labelled array

of buttons. An in-depth usermanual can be downloadedfrom the manufacturer’swebsite in PDF format, whilebasic information for set-ting up and using the box isavailable from a quick guidethat is shipped with the Tel-eFairy 2.0.

Right after switching onthe TeleFairy 2.0 for therst time an installation wiz-ard pops up to guide youthrough the initial set-uproutine. It is here that werealise for the rst time thatwhile the TeleFairy 2.0 maywell be equipped and pre-pared for international mar-kets, it obviously focuses onthe German-speaking coun-

tries. Nonetheless, the listof available on-screen lan-guage options is impressive, and once you have selected ‘your’ language, the wizardproceeds to size, aspectratio and resolution of theprovided video signal. Therange of options is extensiveand has both conventionalTV panels and beamers inmind.

The TeleFairy 2.0 requiresan Internet connection towork properly, which is whythe next step of the set-upsequence deals with provid-ing the relevant network ac-cess parameters. Since theAndroid operating system isat the core of this receiver

the whole range of adjust-ment and setting options isavailable: No matter wheth-er it’s manual IP address al-location or the (much moreconvenient) DHCP distribu-tion system, WEO, WPA orWPA2 encryption or manualSSID input in WiFi mode, theTeleFairy 2.0 is as exibleas you need it to be. Quiteunexpectedly, this receivercan also be connected toWiFi networks in the 5 GHzrange, which means you canenjoy signicantly higherdata transfer rates withcompatible network infra-

process, the manufacturerrecommends looking forsoftware updates to makesure the TeleFairy 2.0 runson the latest software re-lease and gives you all avail-able features and functions.Once that is done, thereis only one last thing youshould do: Create a Tel-eFairy/Fernsehfee account, which can be accomplishedeither from a PC by access-ing the manufacturer’s web-site, or right with the Tele-Fairy 2.0 box.

A TeleFairy account justfor watching TV? What’s thatall about? OK, to understandwhy this is required weneed to look at how the sys-tem works in the rst placeand how it can deliver realbenets to its users. Thesedays, it’s hard (or rather:impossible) to keep track ofTV schedules, new showsand lms, reruns and whathave you. The diversity ofthe current offering is sim-ply overwhelming, so youneed a little helper to ndthe shows and broadcaststhat are right for you. And

ual broadcasts. These datathen form the basis for veryaccurate predictions as tohow popular a future broad-cast will be with the aver-age viewer. Using this pre-diction, the manufacturermakes a rough pre-selectionto identify particularly inter-esting broadcasts. So far,so good – but we all knowthat statistics is a sciencethat not always reects indi-vidual circumstances. That’swhy a TeleFairy account letsyou dene certain genresthat you particularly like.So if sports isn’t really youcup of tea and you’d muchrather while away in front ofthe telly watching suspensemovies, then you just let theTeleFairy know and it willtake into account your hab-its and preferences when itrecommends something toyou next time.

And it gets even betterthan that: When you look atthe remote you’ll nd twounusual buttons, one with asmiling face and one with asad face. Press one of thosebuttons while watching ashow you like (or dislike) togive your TeleFairy an ideaof your TV preferences. Themore often you use thosebuttons, the better your boxgets to know you and themore suitable its future rec-ommendations will become.

this is preciselywhere there Tel-eFairy concept en-ters centre stage.TC Unterhaltung-selektronik AG,the manufacturerof this receiver, has access to ahuge database ofviewership num-bers and ratinggures for individ-

Still, the question remainswhich way the box presentssuggestions to its users.Answer: In a pretty smartway. It sorts the channellist according to how closelythe currently shown eventsmatch your individual pref -erences. So when you sitdown in front of the TV aftera hard day’s work and turnon your TeleFairy the rst

channel on the list is the onethat most likely broadcastssomething that you’re keento watch, and on the bottomof the channel list you’ll ndthe channels you wouldn’ttune into anyway. So thelower the channel number, the better the content – foryou and you alone, that is.

Truly great stuff, but theremight be many of you outthere who love the conceptin principle, but still go like ‘what’s the point of knowingthe channels with the con-tent I love, only to nd thatthey are right in a commer-cial break when I tune in?’The good guys at TC Unter-haltungselektronik AG know

all about those worries andhave come up with a hugelypractical ad blocker. When-ever the TeleFairy detectsa commercial break on agiven channel, that channelis skipped when zapping. When you’re already watch-ing channel and a commer-cial break kicks in, the Tele-Fairy either mutes the audio, switches to the next channelthat is compatible with yourviewing pattern or launchesthe web browser so that youcan kill time surng the net.As soon as the commercialbreak on the original chan-nel is over, the box bringsthat channel back on screento make sure you don’t miss

a thing – unless you decidethe newly suggested chan-nel is even more interestingand you stay hooked to thatchannel with a simple touchof a button on the remotecontrol.

How does the ad blockerwork from a technical per-spective? Not based onan automatic detection ofcommercials, as might beassumed, but on manualmonitoring by TC Unterh-altungselektronik AG staff, which covers 99% of rel-evant channels for the Ger-man-speaking market. At

So we know that the Tel-eFairy takes care of sort-ing the channel list all byits own, but can we also ex-pect the same level of con-venience when it comes to achannel search? You betcha!

eters are always kept up to date by themanufacturer.

When the TeleFairy 2.0 is turned onyou won’t see a TV channel right away, but rather the Android homescreen, from which the TeleFairy TV app canbe launched. Why’s that? Because theTeleFairy 2.0 is so much more than justa TV receiver, thanks to its Android op-erating system that calls the shots inthe background. Jukebox, video player, web browser, e-mail client and millionsof Android apps are at your ngertipswhenever you need them. That’s whythe choice is yours when you turn on theTeleFairy 2.0. And while we’re speakingof choice, you may of course choose tostart with TV reception rather than theAndroid home screen – simply tweaksome of the setup options and considerit done.

So let’s look at the TeleFairy app tostart with. It offers you two options, namely switching to the previouslywatched channel or to the channel thatmight be best suited to your interestsat the moment. A touch of a button isall it takes to bring the desired chan-nel on screen. While watching a chan-nel, the on-screen menu is split up intotwo sections: The left section displaysthe main menu including full access tothe channel list, the EPG, all recordedevents and a range of settings, whilethe actual channel list is shown in theright section of the screen. To bringsome structure into the vast channeloffering, different categories such asNews, Sport, Films, Entertainment, HDetc. are used. And here, too, all chan -nels are sorted dynamically, whichmeans a channel that currently broad-casts a football match can be foundin the Sport category, while the samechannel will appear in the News catego-ry when its evening news are on.

A green or red dot indicates whethera channel is currentlyin a commercial break(red) or not (green). This makes select-ing the right channeleven easier, becauseyou can skip all red dot

channels, so to speak. The manufacturerhas set great store by

the EPG function of its TeleFairy 2.0,and it shows. A total of three differ-ent modes are available: The TeleFairyEPG can show channel schedules forup to three weeks in advance and col-our-codes all listings according to howwell they match a user’s interests andpreferences. The TV Pilot, on the oth-er hand, sorts all listings according togenres, so that you can choose a cat-egory rst and then select an eventin that category. And then there’s thestandard DVB EPG which presents allprogram information that is transmit-ted by the individual channels via sat-ellite. This is the variety you get withall conventional satellite receivers aswell.

No matter which EPG mode you pre -fer, any type allows marking an eventfor recording right from the EPG, butit wouldn’t be the TeleFairy if it hadn’tan extra treat in store: Not only doesit support easy recording on a USBmemory stick or external USB harddisk, you can also rst record a broad-cast locally and then have it convertedinto an MP4 le that is saved onto yourpersonal Google Drive account. Al-ternatively, you may opt for a service

such as www.onlinetvrecorder.com,which does not require the TeleFairyto be switched on at all. Instead, thisweb service will take care of every-thing and the recording will be avail-able from its online storage using theTeleFairy, a tablet PC or smartphone.Sounds great and works nicely, and wewere even more impressed by the factthat the ad blocker is on alert here too, either marking all commercial breaksfor convenient skipping, or interrupt-ing the recording during those breaks.Truly great stuff!

During everyday use the TeleFairy2.0 was a tough device to beat and, quite frankly, created an excellent rstimpression. Its crystal-clear video andfully lip-synced audio never give riseto criticism. Channel switching, on theother hand, takes a little more than onesecond and sometimes tested our pa-tience, particularly as we experiencedoccasional image freezes for a shortmoment after switching to a new chan -nel. This might have to do with syncingvideo and audio, because the image al-ways turned perfect after syncing.

We had another issue with satel-lite conguration, which caused some

15 minutes of active use, followed by 15 minutes in standby mode.

    ● Innovative, target-oriented and reliable concept for suggesting

programs that meet individual users’ preferences.

    ● Integrated ad blocker.

    ● Excellent hardware components. No effort was spared, as can

be seen by 5 GHz WiFi reception, for example.

    ● Regular software updates make sure this box benets from

    continuous improvement and enhancement.

    ● Millions of apps can be downloaded and used thanks to the

Android operating system running in the background.

    ● Conguration and adding of satellite entries does not work reli -

ably. It is not possible to make more than one recording at a time

and whenever a recording is taking place it is not possible to switch

to another channel on the same transponder.

headache when we tried toreceive other orbital posi-tions than the popular Euro-pean ASTRA 19.2° East andHOTBIRD 13° East satellites.

The TeleFairy either refusedaltogether to download addi-tional channel lists for otherorbital positions, or when itdid, this caused ASTRA andHOTBIRD to disappear fromthe list. DiSEqC congura-tion, too, was more demand-ing than we had expectedand requires some technicalunderstanding of the matter, even though the OSD displaysuggests that the TeleFairyis capable of automatic DiS-EqC detection. Accordingto those on-screen inserts,DiSEqC protocols 1.0, 1.1,1.2 and 1.3 should be sup-ported. We did not, however,

nd a way to set up a DiS -EqC motor.

On a positive note, userscan individually allocate spe-cic commands and func-

tions to buttons on the re-mote control, so we are notforced any longer to put upwith the operating ow de-signed by the manufacturer.Instead, the remote controlcan work just like users wantit to. In addition, the Tel-eFairy 2.0 scores highly withall its extended features andfunctions, and of course allthose neat little tools likelanguage selection, subtitlesor OSD teletext are alwaysat your ngertips.

A special feature we par-ticularly liked was the so-called Web button on theremote control, which can

be used to call up additionalinformation on the currentlyshowing broadcast. Usingthis option users are pro-vided with all kinds of de-

tails on actors starring in amovie, additional broadcasttimes and much more. Onceagain, a single touch of abutton is all it takes to marka future screening time forrecording. And speaking ofrecording an event, timeshift viewing is available atany time and allows pausingthe currently showing eventand continuing again at yourconvenience.

Thanks to the TeleFairy2.0 supporting FAT, FAT32and NTFS as le systems forexternal storage media it isno problem to record longevents as a single le, which

the TV screen that is con-nected to the TeleFairy. Wethink that’s a pretty coolidea.

The new TeleFairy 2.0 isbased on the Android 4.2.2operating system, whichmeans you don’t only havethe TeleFairy App at yourdisposal, but also a wealthof other Android features.Need some examples? OK!

Use almost any audio or vid-eo le with this receiver andyou’ll notice that playbackwill work awlessly. Showyour latest holiday picturesto friends and family usingthe built-in image viewerwhich can even access pho-tos that are stored onlineon the Flickr or Google Plusplatforms. But Android is notall about fun and entertain-ment, it also offers the toolsyou need for some seriouslyproductive business: E-mailclient, web browser, note-pad, task management andso on.

The list is more or lessendless and for each task athand you will probably nd

dozens of little helper appsavailable for download fromGoogle Play Store. If you cannd it there, it will work withyour TeleFairy. In general,it makes sense to use a de-vice like that with a wirelessmouse and keyboard to re-ally squeeze out every dropof enjoyment from all thoseapps. All you need to do isconnect the receiver forthe wireless devices to oneof the available USB ports. No need to install driversor run setup software, yourmouse and keyboard willwork right away. Better still, you’ll be amazed how muchmore fun you’ll have com-pared with using the remote

control alone. But make nomistake aboutit, the remotecontrol that comes with theTeleFairy is a really handytool with a range of approxi-mately seven metres and areception angle of around 60degrees. So it will success-fully send your commandseven while you’re roamingaround the living room.

In case you get sick andtired of all those differentremotes lying around onthe coffee table you mayas well opt for the Ad FairyApp for Android to controlyour TeleFairy. It offers the

entire channel list and alsoindicates whether or not achannel is in a commercialbreak. Simulating the origi-nal remote control on yoursmartphone display, this appworked wonderfully duringour test and seems to be avery worthwhile alternativeto the standard remote con-trol.

    With its TeleFairy 2.0 TC

Unterhaltungselektronik AGhas made a great producteven better. It’s the verycapable hardware that feelsmost improved over its pre-decessor in everyday use. Thanks to the Dual CoreARM Cortex A9CPU, whichhas 1GBDDRRAM und 4GBNAND Flash at its disposal, there is a genuine perfor-mance boost, and with theintegrated 1080p Full HDchipset this latest version ofthe TeleFairy is t for the fu -ture when it comes to videooutput. But it’s also the lit-tle details that should not beswept under the carpet, likethe built-in WiFi chipset thatis fully compatible with su-

perfast 5 GHz network. It’sreassuring to notice that TCUnterhaltungselektronik AGhas gone to great lengthsand has spared no effort tomake the TeleFairy a verycapable device.

Nonetheless, hardwarealone is pointless if it is notmatched to innovative soft-ware. The two combinedmake up the winning teamthat is the TeleFairy 2.0.The number of televisionchannels broadcast via sat-ellite has reached a stagethat makes it difcult formost users to stay in theknow of which channel isshowing what and when. The TeleFairy 2.0 can be

regarded as your personalassistant, guiding you rightto the channels and showsyou like and making surethe time you spend in frontof the telly is enjoyable andworthwhile, rather than acomplete waste. It tookonly a few days into our in-depth test for the TeleFairyto learn about our interestsand viewing habits, so thatwe can thoroughly conrmthat the suggestions we re-ceived were always to ourliking and left us lazing awayon the couch with a smile onour face.

can then easily beedited on a PC andsaved onto a DVD,for example. Eachregistered Tele-Fairy user also geta personal e-mailaccount with [email protected] format whichcan be used likeany other e-mailaccount and is ac-cessible directly on
