Opening sessionPositioning of wood construction: impact | developments | tendencies Moderation: Christoph Starck, LIGNUM – Holzwirtschaft Schweiz, Zurich (SUI)Truly sustainable and resource-conscious construction means building with the renewable material wood. Many advantages, such as lower primary energy consumption, the reduction of construction material and weight. As well as the high degree of prefabrication and the resul-ting shorter construction times, favour the use of wood. Furthermore, the legal framework in many countries are clearly changing in favour of wood. The material is increasingly being treated like any other cons-truction material. The single-family home is still important for building with wood, but multi-storey wood construction is on the rise. Another growth market, the densification of urban regions, could bring the industry to its limit. How must the wood construction sector position itself to master this growth in all future markets?.

Wood in the new architecture Moderation: Prof. Hermann Kaufmann, TU Munich, Munich (GER) Modern architecture increasingly pays attention to the traditional building material wood. Is this only a short-term trend or more? The speakers in this prologue are well-known architects, who are trend-setters through their work. What motivates them? What is the value they give to the building material wood in their work? And where do they see opportunities and obstacles? What are their experiences with regard to the planning process and how can it be optimized?

Pre-Conference Seminar IIIWooden house construction forum Organized by the European Federation of Timber Construction, Berlin (GER) Workplace 4.0: The new importance of professional qualifications Moderation: Hermann Atzmüller, Bundesinnungsmeister Holzbau Austria, Vienna (AUT)The dynamically advancing digitization in the workplace 4.0 and the simultaneous demographic change of society represent considerable entrepreneurial and social challenges for the woodworking industry. The labour marketability and flexibility of employees of all ages are becoming more important in digitized work processes. This requires a new understanding of „lifelong learning“ from employers and em-ployees. On the other hand, the increasing digitalization leads to new cooperation and business models. Digital building models enable to link planning and design knowledge more closely in an early phase of building development. New and lucrative market opportunities arise if a wood construction company has cross-sectoral competences.

Building industry in upheaval Moderation: Prof. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Köster,

University Rosenheim, Rosenheim (GER) Digitalization and Industry 4.0 enable billions of machines,

systems and sensors to be connected to each other and ensure a continuous flow of information and communi-cation. Also in the construction industry, and particularly in modular design, digitization using BIM is becoming increasingly important. Material lists and possible product variants must be pre-configured down to the last detail and production-ready to be able to benefit from the time, cost and quality advantages of modular design. A consistent and constant exchange of information between architects, planners, producers as well as end user plays a crucial role in realizing construction projects on time, on budget and with a low number of mistakes.

Timber structures – High performance timber structures occupy a special place in the construction industry and the general public. They inspire confidence in the performance of wood as a building material and document the wide range of its use.

Modularity and space modules Moderation: Ass. Prof. Dr. Tobias Schauerte, Linnaeus University, Växjö (SWE)

Globalization, migration, mobility, demographic and societal change challenge authorities, builders and planners. Intel-ligently designed, efficient and cost-effective, flexible and sustainable solutions are required. Modular construction does not necessarily mean building cheaply. The advantages of the modular design lie in the high degree of pre-fabrication, reduced noise and waste on the construction site as well as scheduling reliability.

Wood has been the focus of their careers. They have promoted wood as a sustainable construction material that will play a central role on the sustainability markets of the future.

19.30 Tribute to individuals with exemplary service to the wood construction industry

Komm.-Rat DI Herbert KultererAfter the death of company founder Jakob Hasslacher in 1958, his then 22-year-old grandson Herbert Kulterer took over his family’s company in the Drautal, consisting of a forestry section, a sawmill and a cardboard produc-tion. In the next 50 years, Herbert Kulterer turned the company into one of Austria‘s largest sawmills and an international player. After handing over the company to his sons in 2007, he is still a consultant and member of the supervisory board. Herbert Kulterer was co-founder of „proHolz“ as a leading representative of the trade association of the sawmill industry and member of several working groups of the Kärnten chamber of commerce and several other provincial councils and task forces.Laudatio: Gewerke D.I. Prof. Kurt SchwanerAlready during his studies, Kurt Schwaner was intensively involved with wood and its use in construction. After graduating in 1974, he worked at the engineering company Boll und Partner. With the goal of realizing independent projects, he founded his own engineering office together with his partners Hölzli and Nebgen. In addition to his engineering work, Kurt also developed the desire to pass on his pro-found knowledge to others. This desire led him to Professor Schunck in Stuttgart, where he worked as a scientific assistant alongside his freelance job. His next position was the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Holz” in Düsseldorf where he further developed and implemented his holistic approach to wood construction with the book series „Informations-dienst Holz“. Kurt’s appointment as professor at the University Biberach in 1996 and the management of the newly founded Ins-titute of Wood Construction was the result of his desire to pass on knowledge and investigate problems. His international research and teaching activities broadly promoted wood construction.Laudatio: Prof. Gerhard Bosch, Biberach (GER)

Timber structures – Wood structures are unique and different from any other structures from an environmental point of view. As a na-tural and renewable resource, wood has qualities that are vital to our survival. If wood as a building material did not exist, we would have to invent it. Accordingly, all stakeholders in the construction industry are called upon to ensure that wood plays a greater role as a const-ruction material than in the recent past.

Block A Guest Countries: Baltic States Moderation: Prof. Targo Kalamees, Technische Universität Tallinn, Tallinn (EST) The three Baltic States Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are part of the European Union. They have a good infrastructure, a high level of education, cultural affiliation with Scandinavia and central Europe as well as healthy economic growth. All three Baltic States have large forested areas and significant traditional forestry and wood indust-ries. Especially in Latvia and Estonia, these industries are important pillars of the domestic economy. In recent years, the industrial wood house construction sector has grown considerably and both coun-tries are the largest wooden house exporters in Europe.

Block CConcepts and constructions for multi-storey wood construction Moderation: Prof. Andreas Müller, Berner Fachhochschule, Biel/Bienne (SUI)Multi-storey wood construction has established itself in many countries, enabled by the high building quality and efficiency of the wood industry. All over the world, increasingly tall wood buildings are being build. In many countries, the building regulations have been adapted for this purpose. This newly created session accounts for this new structural category and will provide architects, engineers and builders valuable support in the demanding design and construction practice. Versatile concepts for multi-storey wood buildings – even high-rise buildings – are presented and discussed in detail. EpilogInternational architecture – Lighthouse projects in and with woodModeration: Prof. Wolfgang Winter, TU Vienna, Vienna (AUT)Lighthouse projects are to be noticed, they should surprise and show the creativity of architects in shaping the future, they should document the status and priorities of the builders and clarify societal demands on buildings. Such projects are often developed in architectural competi-tions and thus reflect the trends within juries, but also the general architecture community. Based on the results of three competitions from three different cultures, current trends in the use of wood in demanding architectural tasks are illustrated.

In France, in more than 20 locations in regional competitions, at least 10-storey wood projects with different uses were sought. In the USA, a 12-storey solid timber construction with mixed use was sought for Portland, a city with culture of building with wood on the west coast. In Sweden, one of the northernmost cities Skeläftä sought a design for a cultural centre, which was won by 19-storey wooden glass construction.
