Thomas Berquist is in the main stream now publishing a book about sports injuries and sport related injuries. I have ‘mixed feelings’ about this book. Positive is the highly educational set-up, the overall good quality of the illustrations even without the seemingly- inevitable upside-down reproduction appearing in so many other books and the excellent drawings by John Hagan. Chapter one is on epidemiology and categories of sports injuries and contains useful information not offered by other texts. Chapter two discusses imaging techniques and does not contain very much news for the radiologist. Chapters three through eleven are anatomically oriented and begin with - usually few - introduction lines connecting the chapter to the title of the book. After that there is a consistent and relevant discussion about anatomy, imaging modalities used in that region, pathology and sometimes brief excursions to the ther- apeutical consequences. Chapter twelve is a highly recom- mended ‘bonus’ on stress fractures. Lay-out of the book is very handsome and references are up to 1991. So how about my previously-mentioned ‘mixed feelings’? While reading I had the impression that some pieces of text and illustrations looked familiar and I took my often con- sulted Imaging of Orthopaedic Trauma and Surgery by the same author from the book shelf and found out that I was right. Apart from the already appraised drawings and the first chapter this book contains very few things that are new. In my opinion the author is duplicating too much of his own work. So who should buy this book for $125.00? I think it is an excellent book for the non-radiologist - sports related - phy- sician be it a GP, (orthopaedic) surgeon, emergency physician or even physiotherapist. Radiological departments, residents and libraries should buy the above mentioned Imaging of Orthopaedic Trauma and Sur- gery (second edition 1991) for a few dollars and a wealth of information more and/or acquire the new Lee Rogers ‘bible’. This small format book in the German language deals with these imaging meth- ods and handles with arthrography, sonography, CT- arthrography and MRI of the shoulder. The book does not deal with conventional radiography for the shoulder. The list of references is adequately arranged for each chapter and each imaging modality, respectivily. The book gives a basic, but good overall picture of the current diagnostic possibilities concerning shoulder pathol- ogy and can be recommended to radiologists, orthopaedics and surgeons dealing with the shoulder joint. Imaging of Sports Injuries Berquist, T.H. Kricum, M.E., Series Editor Aspen Publication 1992 ISBN: o-8342-0296-4, US $ 125.00

The reviving interest by the radiologist in the imaging of trauma is reflected by a flood of new books on this topic.

The diagnostic approach to pathology in the shoulder region has changed considerably in the past few years, because of the development of new imaging modalities. This small format book in the German language deals with these imaging meth- ods and handles with arthrography, sonography, CT- arthrography and MRI of the shoulder.

In the tirst chapter each imaging modality is briefly de- scribed. Impingement syndrome with rotator cuff tear and shoulder instability and luxation are discussed in more detail.

In the other chapters tendinitis calcarea, capsulitis adhe- siva, pathology of the long biceps tendon, trauma and arthritis are summarized. All chapters are illustrated with good quality images with comprehensive legends. The authors describe the indications for each imaging modality based on both their own experience and a review of the literature. The book does not deal with conventional radiography for the shoulder. The list of references is adequately arranged for each chapter and each imaging modality, respectivily. This enables further lit- erature search and reading of specific subjects.

The book gives a basic, but good overall picture of the current diagnostic possibilities concerning shoulder pathol- ogy and can be recommended to radiologists, orthopaedics and surgeons dealing with the shoulder joint.
