Nur wenige Schritte abseits der tourismuszentren bleibt

man von aufdringlichen teppichverkäufern verschont: Seit

1999 führt der Lykische Weg als erster markierter Lang-

streckenpfad des Landes quer durchs Hinterland. Stellen-

weise scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein. Zu Fuß erschließen sich abgele-

gene Serpentinen, einsame Strände und jede Menge antike ruinen.

Way from kas to Antalya The south coast of Turkey offers more than just all

inclusive package deals. Just a few steps outside the tourism centres and one is

spared from pedantic carpet sellers. Since 1999 the Lycian Way, the country’s

first marked out long-distance hiking trail, has cut through the middle of the

Turkish hinterland. In places it seems as though time has stood still, and on foot

one discovers remote mountain trails, secluded beaches and many ancient ruins.

„Was willst Du denn damit?“ Skeptisch betrach-

tet der alte Mann meine Trekkingstöcke, runzelt

sein von der Mittelmeersonne gegerbtes Gesicht

und gibt mir zu verstehen, dass er die Stöcke

schon gebrauchen könnte – aber ein junger Mann

wie ich doch nicht!

Wanderer sind in der Türkei noch immer ein

ungewöhnliches Bild. Die Pauschaltouristen aus

Deutschland, Großbritannien und den Nieder-

landen zieht es vor allem an die Strände der Tür-

kischen Riviera. Und die Einheimischen gehen

nur zu Fuß, wenn es unbedingt sein muss, aber

ganz sicher nicht zur Erholung.

Trekking und Türkei – zwei Gegenpole, die erst in

den letzten 15 Jahren langsam zusammen finden.

In den 1990er Jahren hatte die Engländerin Kate

Clow den Küstenstreifen zwischen Fethiye und

antalya mit dem direkt dahinter aufragenden

Taurusgebirge als ideales Wandergebiet ent-

deckt: Weitgehend unerschlossen, nicht über-

laufen und sehr naturnah. auf ihre Initiative hin

entstand 1999 der „Lykische Weg“, der auf einer

Länge von über 500 km mit rot-weißen Farb-

Hikers in Turkey are still a rare sight. The beaches

of the Turkish Riviera mainly draw package tours

from Germany, Great Britain and Holland. The

locals may go by foot, but only if they absolutely

have to, and certainly not for rest and relaxation.

Trekking and Turkey – polar opposites that only

in the last 15 years have slowly begun to merge

together. In the 1990s Englishwoman Kate Clow

discovered the stretch of coastline between Fethiye

and Antalya, with the towering Taurus Mountains

as a backdrop, as the perfect place to hike: for the

most part unexplored, not overrun, and very close

to nature. In 1999 on her initiative, the “Lycian

Way” was developed, stretching over 500 km and

denoted by red-white markers – much in the sty-

le of the long-distance French hiking routes – the

Grand Randonnées.

Vier Wochen dauert es, die gesamte Strecke zu

laufen. Doch wer so viel Zeit nicht hat, kann sich

problemlos kürzere abschnitte aussuchen. Dank

der Küstenstraße sind alle Start- und Zielpunkte

der einzelnen Etappen gut mit öffentlichen Ver-

kehrsmitteln zu erreichen.

So beginnt meine Wanderung, als ich am frühen

abend in Kas aus dem Minibus steige. Das ehe-

malige Fischerdorf liegt etwa 180 km südwest-

lich von antalya. Hier gibt es antike Felsgräber

zu bestaunen und ein gut erhaltenes amphithe-

ater. In den verwinkelten Gassen mit ihren his-

torischen Häusern laden kleine Geschäfte zum

Stöbern ein. Nach einem türkischen Frühstück

mit Weißbrot, frischen Tomaten, Oliven und Feta

schnüre ich die Wanderstiefel und folge den rot-

weißen Markierungen über Felder und durch

Olivenhaine in Richtung Nordosten. Es duftet

nach Thymian und am Wegesrand brummen

It takes four weeks to hike the whole route. For

those who don’t have enough time, it is easy to

walk smaller sections. Thanks to the coastal road,

all start and endpoints of the individual stages

have good public transport links.

My journey begins as I get out of the minibus

in Kas in the early evening. The former fishing

village was founded on the site of ancient Anti-

phellus and lies about 180 km southwest of Anta-

lya. Here one can marvel at the ancient rock-cut

tombs, a well preserved amphitheatre and the

remains of a doric grave. In the winding allies li-

ned with historic houses, small shops invite you

to rummage through their goods. After a typical

Turkish breakfast the next morning with white

bread, fresh tomatoes, olives and feta, I lace up

my hiking boots and follow the red-white mar-

kers over fields and through olive groves, headed

northeast. It smells of Thyme and the bees buzz

on the edge of the path. The trail snakes past dre-

amy bays and without many inclines remains by

the sea.

auf dem Lykischen Weg vor über zehn Jahren

hat sich einiges getan. Inzwischen ist der „Lykia

Yolu“ wie der Fernwanderweg in der Landes-

sprache heißt, ein Begriff und man hat sich an

die bunt gekleideten ausländer mit den großen

Rucksäcken gewöhnt. Vielerorts sind neue Pen-

sionen und Zeltplätze entstanden, was die Tour

zwar etwas weniger ursprünglich, dafür aber

auch um einiges komfortabler macht. So kann

ich am Ende der Tagesetappe am „Purple House“

in aperlai ein kühles Efes-Bier genießen, wäh-

rend ich dem Meer dabei zuschaue, wie es an den

aus der Wasseroberfläche ragenden Steinsar-

kophagen lutscht. Unter diesen dunklen Fluten

müssen die Purpurschnecken herumkriechen,

denen das „Purple House“ seinen Namen ver-

fortable. It means at the end of the day’s stage I

can enjoy a cold Efes beer at the “Purple House”

in Aperlai while I look out onto the sea as it slaps

against the imposing stone tombs rising up from

the surface of the water. Somewhere, there in the

dark waters, purple snails are to be found, the

creatures from which the “Purple House” derives

its name. In ancient times, precious purple dye

was obtained from these murex snails.

Meine nächste Station ist das malerische Fi-

scherdörfchen Üçagiz. In den letzten Jahren

hat es sich vom einstigen Geheimtipp zu einem

beliebten Hafen für ausflugsboote zur vorge-

lagerten Insel Kekova und den versunkenen

Unterwasserruinen vor der Küste entwickelt.

Von dort marschiere ich weiter nach Kale. Die

Stadt ist vor allem für die beeindruckenden Fel-

sengräber von Myra bekannt, die in die senk-

rechtabfallende Felswand geschlagen wurden,

ist aber auch ein wichtiges Gemüseanbaugebiet

und versorgt die Hotelburgen mit frischen To-

maten, Gurken und Orangen.

Trecker und Mopeds, stapelhoch mit Kisten be-

laden, tuckern an mir vorbei und der Geruch

von Holzfeuer mischt sich mit dem von Ziegen,

als ich mich wieder auf den Weg in die Lykische

Bergwelt mache. Irgendwo kläfft ein Hund,

In the last few years, it has gone from a secret tip

to a popular harbour for boat trips to the island

of Kekova and the sunken underwater ruins lying

off the coast. From there I march on to Kale. The

town is mainly known for the impressive rock-cut

tombs of Myra, carved into the vertical cliff wall;

Kale is also an important vegetable producer and

provides hotel guests all along the Turkish Medi-

terranean coast with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers

and oranges.

Tractors and mopeds stacked high with crates

chug past me and the smell of log fire mixed with

that of goats reaches me as I turn my back on the

town and head for the Lycian mountainside. So-

mewhere a dog is barking, a whining donkey is

trying to assert itself against the rumblings of a

diesel driven irrigation pump. A camel stares at me

lazily from its shed as I follow the path markers

between two green houses, which then snakes its

way up the hill to Zeytin. Before me lies one of the

loneliest sections on the whole route. A few goats

are all that I encounter as clamber past the ruins of

the church of Alakalise at around 1800m.

On the other side of the mountains lies the harbour

town of Finike. Here, it seems the Lycian Way

wants to apologise for the exertions of the last few

days. Without a single metre of incline, the route

takes me past the wide beach eastwards through

Karaöz to Adrasan, marking the southern most

outpost on the Lycian peninsula. After a another

day’s hiking I reach Olympos, where the ruins of

the once rich town are shrouded in shrubbery. But

no one really comes for that reason. From just a

few tree houses on the hippie trail, along which

flower children of the 1960s and 1970s travelled

from Europe overland to South Asia, the valley

has developed into a popular meeting place for

backpackers from all over the world.

Tree house camps jostle for position right up to the

entrance of the ancient ruins, and there is a festi-

ve atmosphere everywhere. Via the beach it is not

far to Çirali, where the eternal flames of the Chi-

maera, fuelled by natural gas since ancient times,

flicker out of the pitted ground.

At Çirali, the Lycian Way splits into two. The easy

route leads you along the coast via Kemer, Tekiro-

va and past the ruins of Phaselis with an impressi-

ve Roman theatre, hidden in a fragrant pine forest.

hinauf nach Zeytin schlängelt. Vor mir liegt

einer der einsamsten abschnitte der gesamten

Tour. Nur ein paar Ziegen kommen mir entge-

gen, als ich an der Ruine der Kirche von alakali-

se vorbei hinauf auf fast 1800 m Höhe klettere.

fenstadt Finike. Hier scheint sich der Lykische

Weg für die Strapazen der vergangenen Tage

entschuldigen zu wollen. Ohne einen einzigen

Höhenmeter folgt er dem breiten Sandstrand

nach Osten über Karaöz nach adrasan, das den

südlichsten Vorposten der Lykischen Halbinsel

markiert. Eine Tagesetappe später ist Olympos

erreicht, wo die Ruinen der einst reichen Stadt

im Unterholz verschwinden. aber deswegen

kommt kaum jemand hierher. ausgehend von

ein paar Baumhäusern am Hippie-Trail, auf dem

die Blumenkinder der 1960er und 70er Jahre

von Europa über Land nach Südasien unter-

wegs waren, hat sich das Tal zu einem beliebten

Treffpunkt von Backpackern aus aller Welt ent-

wickelt.

Bis zum Eingang an den antiken Ruinen reiht

sich ein Baumhauscamp an das nächste, über-

all herrscht ausgelassene Partylaune. Über den

Strand ist es nicht weit bis nach Çirali, wo, ge-

speist von Erdgas, seit dem altertum die ewigen

Flammen der Chimeira aus dem löchrigen Bo-

den züngeln.

In Çirali teilt sich der Lykische Weg. Die einfa-

che Variante führt am Meer entlang über Ke-

mer, Tekirova und die im duftenden Pinienwald

versteckten Ruinen von Phaselis mit einem be-

eindruckenden römischen Theater. Ich folge der

Gebirgsroute, die über den Tahtali Dagı-Sattel

unterhalb des 2.366 m hohen Gipfels klettert,

hier geht‘s lang it‘s this Way

um sich bei Gedelme mit der Küstenstrecke zu vereinen. Über Forstwege

und alte Trampelpfade erreiche ich den eindrucksvollen Göynük-Canyon.

Nun trennt mich „nur“ noch ein 1.500 m hoher Pass vom Endpunkt His-

arçandir. Der anstieg in engen Serpentinen kostet einige Schweißtropfen

extra. auf der anderen Seite geht es zunächst steil bergab und dann über

einen Feldweg nach Hisarçandir, wo ein großes Portal neben der Moschee

das Ende des Lykischen Wegs verkündet.

Noch ahne ich es nicht, aber hier beginnt der aufregendste abschnitt

auf meiner Reise von Kas nach antalya. Denn als ich mich gerade im

Teehaus nach einer Mitfahrgelegenheit in Richtung antalya erkundige,

hält ein Motorroller neben mir. Ein stoppelbärtiger Mittvierziger mit ei-

ner Filterlosen im Mundwinkel bietet an, mich mitzunehmen. Er klemmt

sich meinen Rucksack zwischen die Knie, bietet mir den Beifahrersitz an

und schon schießen wir die nicht enden wollenden Serpentinen hinab. Es

wird eine halsbrecherische Fahrt hinab in die altstadt von antalya, wo

die Strände der Türkischen Riviera auf mich warten.

I choose to follow the mountain route which climbs over the Tahtali Dagi

saddle below the 2366 m summit, reuniting with the coastal path at Gedelme.

I reach the impressive Göynük Canyon via forest paths and dirt tracks. Now

“just” 1500 m stand between me and the finish line at Hisarçandir. The path

climbs higher and higher and the steep serpentine ascent makes me sweat

more than usual. On the other side the trail descends sharply taking me over a

field to Hisarçandir, where a large gateway next to the mosque marks the end

of the Lycian Way.

I don’t know it yet, but the most exciting part of my journey from Kas to An-

talya is about to begin. When I ask in the tea house about catching a ride to

Antalya a motor scooter pulls up alongside me. A stubbled man in his mid 40s

smoking a filterless cigarette offers to take me. With no further ado he shoves

my backpack between his knees and shoots down the never-ending serpen-

tine road with me as a passenger. It’s going to be a breakneck journey to the

old town of Antalya, where the beaches of the Turkish Riviera await me.

roUtEThe Lycian Way stretches for more then 500 km along the Turkish Me-

diterranean coast from Fethiye in the west to Antalya in the east. To

complete the whole route, you should plan at least four weeks. Thanks

to the good transport connections, you can walk as many sections of

different lengths as you like.

ChArACtEristiCs Through its continuous changing between Taurus mountains and Me-

diterranean, the Lycian Way offers the complete spectrum from simple

beach walk to challenging Alpine stage.

BEst timEMid-September to mid-November is the perfect time as well as from Fe-

bruary to May. In summer it is too hot; in winter and spring the higher

sections often see snow.

ACCommoDAtioNIn the towns there are hotels in all price categories and in the last few

years guest houses have sprung up even in the smaller places. For the

more secluded sections, it is worth taking a tent. Please note: camping is

prohibited at historical sites by the Turkish Ministry of Culture.

strECkENvErlAUfDer Lykische Weg zieht sich auf einer Länge von über 500 km ent-

lang der türkischen Mittelmeerküste von Fethiye im Westen nach

antalya im Osten. Für die komplette Strecke sollte man mindestens

vier Wochen Zeit im Gepäck haben. aufgrund der guten Verkehrs-

anbindung sind aber auch beliebig kürzere abschnitte von unter-

schiedlicher Länge möglich.

toUrENChArAktErDurch seine Länge und den stetigen Wechsel zwischen Taurusge-

birge und Mittelmeer bietet der Lykische Weg die ganze Bandbreite

vom einfachen Strandspaziergang bis zur anstrengenden alpin-

etappe.

BEstE ZEitBesonders gut wandern lässt es sich von Mitte September bis Mit-

te November sowie von Februar bis Mai. Im Sommer ist es zu heiß,

im Winter und Frühjahr ist in den höheren Lagen mit Schnee zu

rechnen.

ÜBErNAChtUNgIn den Städten gibt es Hotels in allen Preisklassen und in den ver-

gangenen Jahren sind selbst in kleineren Orten einfache Pensionen

entstanden. Für die abgelegenen abschnitte empfiehlt sich dennoch

ein eigenes Zelt. achtung: an historischen Stätten ist Camping vom

türkischen Kulturministerium untersagt.

ose und Rafael zurren noch einmal das Seil fest, dann spurten sie los und schieben

unseren Korbschlitten den steilen Berg hinab. Die wortkargen Portugiesen tragen

runde, flache Strohhüte und sind ganz in weiß gekleidet, der Untergrund hingegen ist

grau, denn Schnee liegt keiner. Jose und Rafael haben die Holzkufen mit Seife einge-

schmiert, denn auf Madeira ist das ganze Jahr lang Rodelsaison.

Schnell verschwindet die Kirche ‘Nossa Senhora do Monte’ hinter uns, in der der letzte Herrscher

von Österreich-Ungarn begraben liegt, Kaiser Karl I von Habsburg. Monte liegt oberhalb der

Hafenstadt Funchal und bietet einen majestätischen Blick auf Häusermeer und atlantik. aber

kaum sind Jose und Rafael in voller Fahrt auf unser geflochtenes Gefährt gesprungen, gleiten wir

geschwind durch steile Kurven und enge Gassen mit Mauern aus grauem Naturstein, an deren

Ende immer wieder das Blau des Ozeans hervorschimmert. Bis zu 50 km/h erreichen wir, und an

manchen Stellen bekommt man es fast mit der angst zu tun. Zum Glück beruhigt uns die stoische

Ruhe und Erfahrung unserer Fahrer wieder – gerade bis zum nächsten Kreischer.

Die „carros de cesto“ haben eine lange Tradition. Schon vor mehr als 150 Jahren war ein bri-

tischer Gentleman es leid, die sechs Kilometer von seinem Wohnsitz in Monte nach Funchal

zu Fuß hinabzusteigen. Seitdem lenken die „Carreiros“ die Korbschlitten auf Holzkufen ins Tal

hinunter. „Toboggan“ nennen die Engländer das Gefährt, genau wie die traditionelle Rutsch-

attraktion auf dem Oktoberfest.

Zehn Minuten lang rauscht unsere „Seifenkiste“ auf Kufen durch ganz normale Straßen, an au-

tos und Passanten vorbei, der Hauptstadt entgegen. als wir im Vorort Livramento aussteigen,

zittern unsere Beine ein wenig. Jose und Rafael hingegen lächeln nur kurz, dann laden sie den

Schlitten auf einen Lkw. Die nächsten Rodler warten schon.

tOBOGGAN ride WitHOut SNOW Jose and Rafael pull the rope taut once more before com-

pleting a sprint start, pushing our wicker toboggan down the steep hill. The taciturn Portuguese duo

are sporting flat straw hats and are dressed all in white. Jose and Rafael have rubbed the wooden

skids with soap, because here, on snowless Madeira, sledding season is all year round.

The church of ‘Nossa Senhora do Monte’ quickly vanishes behind us, where the last ruler of the Aust-

ro-Hungarian Empire, Charles I, is buried. Monte lies above the harbour town of Funchal and offers a

majestic view out over an ocean of houses and the Atlantic. No sooner have Jose und Rafael jumped

on our woven vehicle, than we are swiftly sliding through steep curves and narrow allies, the blue of

the ocean gleams below. Reaching up to 30 mph, it is a little scary in places. Luckily we are comforted

by the stoic calm and experience of our drivers – at least until the next bend.

The “carros de cesto” have a long tradition. More than 150 years ago, a British gentleman was vexed

at having to brave the six kilometres from Monte to Funcahl on foot. Ever since, the “Carreiros” or

basket toboggans have been navigated down the valley.

For ten minutes our “soap box” on skids slides through normal streets, past cars and passers-by to-

wards the capital. As we hop off in the outskirt town of Livramento, our legs are trembling a little.

Jose and Rafael smile briefly, then load the sled onto a truck. The next sledders are already waiting.

Strand mit insel BeACH WitH iSLANd Porto Santo has something neighbouring

Madeira does not: a never-ending beach of the finest sand.

Crystal clear water, clement temperatures and a magnificent beach: Porto

Santo is an almost paradisiacal summer destination. Not least for couples

and families, in need of a recuperative holiday by the sea. In the dunes, small,

inviting locales can be found dotted around. The sand is also believed to have

healing properties. The Hotel Porto Santo has started offering first sand

treatments in its Geomedicine Centre & Spa.

With its bizarre volcanic landscape, Madeira’s rougher sister is also great for

hiking. The 517-metre-high Pico do Facho offers a wonderful view. In the

west, on the south-facing slope of Pico de Ana de Ferreira, visitors can glimp-

se Porto Santo’s imposing basalt cliffs.

For watersports fans, the turquoise blue tides of the Atlantic offer surfing,

diving and sailing. Unlike Madeira, Porto Santo is flat, making discovering the

island by bike an attractive alternative.

Bekannt ist das Königreichs für seine langen Strände um agadir und die kulturellen Rundreisen

„La Place“ sind nichts für schwache Nerven – aber dafür von mystischer Kraft. Und im Labyrinth

der Souks, auf dem 20 Hektar großen labyrinthischen Basar, wird auch das Shopping zu einem Fest

der Sinne: Textilien, Schmuck oder Lederprodukte, Holzarbeiten, Gewürze, Teppiche oder Eisenwa-

ren haben ihre eigenen Bereiche. Überall drängen Mopeds und Eselskarren, es riecht nach Dung

und Kräutern und abgasen und Tee. Die wichtigste Shopping-Regel lautet hier: Niemals am ersten

Tag einkaufen gehen und stattdessen erst mal ankommen in der anderen Welt, runterkommen.

Ruhe und Entspannung jenseits der Märkte bieten klassische Luxushotels wie das „La Mamounia“

– oder auch Golfplätze wie der „Royal Marrakech Golf Course“ von 1923, am Fuß des majestätischen

atlasgebirges. Denn Marokko hat – und auch das wissen nur wenige – eine fast hundertjährige

Golf-Tradition, mit heute 21 Plätzen. Weiter weg vom Trubel des Djemaa el Fna kann man wohl

jewellery, leather goods, woodwork, spices, carpets

and iron goods all have their place. Mopeds and

donkey carts swarm everywhere, it smells of dung,

herbs, exhaust fumes and tea. The most important

rule for shopping here is never go shopping on the

first day, rather arrive in this other world and accli-

matise first. Away from the markets, peace and re-

laxation can be found at classic luxury hotels like “La

Mamounia” and on golf courses such as the “Royal

Marrakech Golf Course”, dating back to 1923 and

situated at the foot of the majestic Atlas Mountains.

Morocco has – truly one of its best kept secrets – an

almost 100-year golfing tradition, today boasting 21

facades and its colourful flea market are still known to many from the eponymous film. Notting Hill

really dazzles in summer, when the world famous carnival dances its way through the streets. With

Calypso, steel drums, Caribbean food, crazy costumes and lots of bare skin, Europe’s biggest street fes-

tival celebrates the diversity of world capital London. 50,000 artists transform the streets on 24 and 25

August into one big party for the approximately 2.5 million spectators. Aside from the carnival, Notting

Hill is a well situated neighbourhood, one where you can experience a piece of authentic London off the

beaten track. It’s most famous for Portobello Road with its Saturday antique and flea market. The res-

taurant scene is also colourful ranging from two Michelin starred “The Ledbury”, the Caribbean “Rum

Kitchen” to rustic pub “Sun in Splendour”. No wonder then that Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant fell in love

in “Notting Hill“.

Selten war die auswahl so verführerisch wie in der altstadt von Ibiza: „Rochenflügel mit zerlas-

sener Butter und Kapern“ oder „Gegrillte Seeteufelmedaillons auf Safransoße mit konfitierten

Zwiebelchen“? El Olivo oder La Oliva? Hüben oder drüben? Wenn an der Placa de la Vila die zwei

angesagten Restaurants El Olivo und La Oliva um Kundschaft buhlen, gibt es immer den gleichen

Gewinner: Den Gast. „El Olivo“ ist das Original, und bietet direkt an der massiven Stadtmauer Tapas

und eine rustikale, regionale Küche mit Pfiff; „La Oliva“ gilt als Kopie, ist aber auch schon seit 1985

am Platze. Die Küche ist einen Tick moderner und mischt Mediterranes mit asiatischen Einschlä-

spoilt for choice as in the seductive Ibiza old town: “skate wings with melted butter and capers” or “medalli-

ons of monkfish in saffron sauce with onion confit”? El Olivo or La Oliva? This side or that? When the two

most popular restaurants El Olivo and La Oliva try and lure in passers-by at the Plaça de la Vila,, there is

really only one winner: the diner. “El Olivo” is the original and offers Tapas and rustic, regional cuisine with

a twist, located directly at the massive city walls. “La Oliva”, while being a copy, has still been there since

1985. The cuisine is slightly more modern and is a mix of Mediterranean and Asian influences. One really

can’t do much wrong at the cobblestoned Placa with its grand gateway. Both restaurants are French run,

both are reached via the train bridge winding along the massive walls of the old town (a UNESCO World

Heritage Site since 1999) and through the narrow allies. The Nostra Senyora de las Neus cathedral crowns

Goethe, Gropius, Liszt und Bach – um große Namen ist die kleine Stadt Weimar nicht verlegen. auf

einem Trip ins Herz Thüringens lässt sich deutsche Geschichte wie unter dem Brennglas erleben.

Los geht es im Barock: 2014 feiert die Stadt der Dichter und Denker mit dem „Bach-Jubiläumsjahr“

die Musik von Vater und Sohn der Komponisten-Dynastie mit thematischen Stadtführungen

ist eigentlich ein Park, in welchem eine Stadt liegt“, wie es der autor adolf Stahr vor 150 Jahren

formulierte. Zum Beispiel zu Goethes Wohnhaus am Frauenplan, in dem er bis 1832 lebte. Drei

Landschaftsparks reihen sich am Flüsschen Ilm aneinander, der bekannteste von ihnen ist der

Goethe-Park. So schlendert man durch die kleine Universitätsstadt, die viel studentisches Flair ver-

sprüht, vorbei am Nationaltheater, in dem 1919 die Weimarer Republik begründet wurde. Direkt

gegenüber landet man am Gründungsort der Klassischen Moderne, denn hier blühte in den frühen

1920er Jahren das von Walter Gropius gegründete Bauhaus auf. Noch ist das für 2018 geplante, große

Bauhaus-Museum nicht fertig. Im kleinen Bauhaus-Museum am Theaterplatz finden sich aber

auch heute schon stilsichere Inspirationen für die eigene Wohnung, von der Kugellampe bis zum

Tee-Service – fast 100 Jahre alt und noch immer zeitlos schön.

with Baroque: 2014 is the Bach jubilee year and

will see the town of poets and thinkers celebrate

the music of the composer dynasty with themed

because “Weimar is actually a park in which lies a

town”, as author Adolf Stahr put it 150 years ago.

Perhaps to Goethe’s house am Frauenplan, where

he lived until 1832. Three country parks lie next

to each other along the river Ilm, most famous is

the Goethe Park. Winding one’s way through this

university town full of student flair one comes

across the national theatre, where in 1919 the

Weimar Republic was founded. Directly opposi-

te is the birthplace of Classic Modernism: in the

early 1920s this is where Walter Gropius founded

the Bauhaus school. Today in the small Bauhaus

museum am Theaterplatz one finds inspirations

for the home from the Kugellampe to the tea set –

almost 100 years old but timelessly beautiful.

Tümmler, der Gemeine Delfin,

der Streifendelfin und der

Rundkopfdelfin. Leider gehen

ihre Populationen jedoch zu-

rück, so dass sie in die Liste der bedrohten

Tierarten aufgenommen wurden. Tierschützer

haben daher im vergangenen Sommer in Grie-

chenland ein einzigartiges Projekt zur Erfas-

sung und Beobachtung von Delfinen initiiert

– ein Projekt, bei dem sich auch Freiwillige für

den Schutz des beliebtesten aller Meeressäuger

engagieren können.

– Nördliche Sporaden aktiv, der im Norden von

athen liegt. Betrieben wird es von der MOm/

IHellenic Society for the Study and Protection of

the Monk Seal, einer gemeinnützigen griechi-

schen Organisation für den Schutz von Meeres-

und Küstenlebensräumen, die sich vor allem

um den Schutz der vom aussterben bedrohten

Mittelmeer-Mönchsrobbe bemüht.

Das NaDP ist jedoch ein selbstfinanziertes Pro-

jekt. Freiwillige sind daher herzlich eingeladen,

sich dem Forschungsteam für eine Woche an-

zuschließen und aktiv bei der täglichen For-

schungsarbeit auf dem Meer und beim Erfassen

und Verarbeiten wichtiger Daten zu helfen. Die

Teilnehmer fahren auf dem Forschungsschiff

“IFaW-Odysseia”, einem 13 Meter langen tradi-

tionellen Kaik in Holzbauweise, speziell umge-

rüstet für die Bedürfnisse der Organisation. Die

„Odysseia“ ist seit 22 Jahren das Herzstück der

Forschungsarbeit von MOm, und Kapitän Kos-

tas, geboren und aufgewachsen in alonissos,

erzählt gerne Geschichten von seinen abenteu-

ern auf See.

Teilnehmer an dem Projekt brauchen keine Vor-

kenntnisse in Meeresbiologie oder Forschungs-

methoden. Ein wichtiger Teil des Trainings ist

die Identifikation von Fotos. Die Stichproben-

studien unterscheiden Tiere anhand spezieller

Markierungen auf dem Körper.

Das Projekt findet in der atemberaubenden Sze-

nerie des Meeresnationalparks alonissos statt,

einem der größten Meeresschutzgebiete Euro-

pas. abgesehen von den Delfinen kann man

dort noch andere seltene und bedrohte Tierarten

antreffen, wie die Mittelmeer-Mönchsrobbe,

den Cuvier-Schnabelwal, und sehr selten auch

andere große Meeressäuger wie Pottwale.

alonissos ist die einzige bewohnte Insel auf

dem Gebiet des Nationalparks. Sie ist mit hohen

Sträuchern und Bäumen typischer mediter-

raner arten bewachsen, wie Erdbeerbäumen,

Eiben und Pinien. Entlang der Küste liegen

zahlreiche wunderschöne, teils noch unbe-

rührte Strände mit kristallklarem Wasser. Das

Safari auf SeeIn Griechenland trifft Tierschutz auf Tourismus

Tauchen ist dort erst seit 2011 erlaubt. Der un-

berührte Meeresboden ist reich an Flora und

Fauna, außerdem liegen dort einige historisch

sehr wertvolle Wracks – ein wahres Taucher-

paradies. Zahlreiche Fußwege laden ein, die

Schönheit der Inselnatur zu erkunden.

Freiwillige zahlen 850 Euro. In der Gebühr ent-

halten sind fünf Forschungstage, Frühstück

und Mittagessen meist an Bord des Forschungs-

schiffs, Versicherungsschutz für die Zeit des

aufenthalts an Bord, und die Trainingssemi-

nare. Studenten erhalten Rabatt. Sehr günstige

angebote gibt es für Gruppen von vier bis fünf

Personen oder für längere aufenthalte, sofern

Platz an Bord zur Verfügung steht. Die Teilnah-

me am Northern aegean Project kann auch als

Teil eines Unternehmensprogramms für Um-

weltschutz und soziale Verantwortung statt-

finden. Die Kosten liegen dann bei 950 Euro/

Person.

Delfine zu fotografieren gehört zur Projektarbeit. anschließend werden

die Fotos verglichen um zu sehen, welche Delfine identisch sind und eine

genaue Zählung der Exemplare im Meer zu erhalten. Insgesamt eine

fantastische Erfahrung, die ich jederzeit empfehlen würde.

The project work involves photographing dolphins. Afterwards, the pictures

have to be matched to see which dolphins are the same to get an accurate

count on the number of dolphins in the area. Overall the experience was

awesome and I would definitely recommend it.

Currently, there are four species of dolphins living permanently

in the seas between Gibraltar and Beirut: the bottlenose dolphin,

the short-beaked common dolphin, the striped dolphin and the

Risso’s dolphin. Sadly though, their populations are declining, so

they have been included on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Spe-

cies. That’s why last summer a unique project for the recording

and monitoring of dolphins was initiated in Greece – a project that

invites volunteers to help protect the most beloved of all sea mam-

mals, the dolphin.

The Northern Aegean Dolphin Project (NADP) is set in the wider

area of the National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Spora-

des, north of Athens. It is run by MOm/Hellenic Society for the

Study and Protection of the Monk seal, a Greek environmental

non-profit organization, acting towards the protection of the ma-

rine and coastal environment, focusing on the critically endange-

red Mediterranean monk seal.

Since the NADP is a self-sustained project, it happily accepts peo-

ple willing to join the research team for a week. This means that

you can be actively involved in daily field surveys at sea, as well

as collecting and processing important data. Participants get to

sail on the “IFAW-Odysseia”, a 13-metre-long, traditional wooden

caique, specifically modified in order to accommodate the

organization’s research efforts. The “Odysseia” has been the heart

and soul of MOm’s research activities for the past 22 years and

its Captain Kostas, born and raised in Alonissos, is constantly

sharing stories and adventures from the sea!

Participation in the project does not presuppose prior knowledge

of marine mammal biology or research technique protocols. One of

the main things that participants will be trained on is the process of

photo identification. These sampling studies use special markings

on the body of an animal to distinguish it from other individuals.

The project takes place amongst the breath-taking scenery of the

National Marine Park of Alonissos, one of Europe’s largest mari-

ne protected areas. Apart from dolphins, there are other rare and

endangered species to be encountered, such as the Mediterranean

monk seal, the rarely seen and little known Cuvier’s beaked whale

and – on rare occasions – other larger cetaceans such as the sperm

whale.

The island of Alonissos is the only inhabited island within the

marine park. It is covered by the high bushes and trees typical of

Mediterranean flora, such as arbutuses, yews and pine trees. Ac-

ross the island there is a large number of beautiful beaches with

crystal-clear waters, some of which still remain untouched. Scuba

diving has only been allowed since 2011. The untouched seabed

rich in flora and fauna, along with the wrecks of great historical

value, is ideal for avid scuba divers. There are also many footpaths

to explore the island‘s natural beauty.

I was fortunate to come across almost every species of dol-

phins. We had the chance to visit natural reserve areas and

dive into crystal clear waters where no human intervention

existed. After a long day, the Greek night life followed which

would include Greek restaurants with live music, concerts,

traditional fiestas and bars.

Volunteers pay 850 euros, a fee that covers the five-day sur-

veys, breakfast and lunch usually on-board the research ves-

sel, accommodation, partial insurance while on-board and the

training seminars. Student discounts apply, whereas very eco-

nomical offers are provided for groups of four and five people

or for longer periods of participation, provided that there is

room available for consecutive weeks. The Northern Aegean

Project can also be included in the agenda of companies under

their Corporate Social/Environmental Responsibility scheme,

at 950 euros/person.

n den Urlaub mit dem Flugzeug? Das galt lange Zeit als un-

erschwinglicher Luxus. anfang der 1960er Jahre unterneh-

men zwar schon rund 17 Millionen Deutsche pro Jahr eine

Urlaubsreise, aber nur zwei Prozent davon leisten sich einen

Flug. Doch in Zeiten des Wirtschaftswunders wird Fliegen

bei den reiselustigen Deutschen immer beliebter. Von Jahr

zu Jahr steigen die Passagierzahlen, viele Reisveranstalter

und Reisebüros entstehen. Lufthansa und Condor bekommen Konkurrenz

durch neue Fluglinien wie atlantis, Paninternational und Bavaria.

Einer, der die Zeichen der Zeit früh erkennt, ist 1969 noch Vorstands-

assistent bei der Bremer Großwerft Weser aG. Der junge Dr. Hinrich

Bischoff beobachtet den Niedergang der Personenschifffahrt – und hat

eine Idee: als eine Delegation aus den Vereinigten arabischen Emiraten

nach Bremen kommt, um über den Bau neuer Tanker zu verhandeln, ent-

wickelt Bischoff für die araber Pläne für den aufbau einer eigenen Flug-

gesellschaft. Doch das Projekt zerschlägt sich. Erst Jahre später münden

seine Ideen in der Gründung der Fluglinie Emirates.

The dream of fLyIng. SINCE 1979 MILLIONS OF PASSENGERS

EVERY YEAR FLY WITH GERMANIA ON HOLIDAY AND TO VISIT

FRIENDS AND FAMILY. HOWEVER, THE AIRCRAFT WERE NOT AL-

WAYS FLYING UNDER THE NAME GERMANIA.

Flying on holiday? For a long time this was considered an exorbitant luxury.

At the start of the 1960s already around 17 million Germans per year could af-

ford a holiday, but only two percent of these could afford a flight. But in the

time of the Wirtschaftswunder flying became increasingly popular with the

travel-happy Germans. From year to year passenger numbers rise, many tour

operators and travel agents begin to crop up. Lufthansa and Condor encounter

competition from new airlines such as Atlantis, Paninternational and Bavaria.

In 1969, one man who recognised the signs of the times early on is still assistant

to the board at Bremen-based Großwerft Weser AG. The young Dr. Hinrich

Bischoff observes the demise of passenger shipping and has an idea. When a

delegation from the United Arab Emirates comes to Bremen in order to negoti-

ate the construction of a new tanker, Bischoff develops plans for the Arabs to

found an independent airline. But the project falls apart. Only years later do his

ideas flow into the foundation of the Emirates airline.

As the popularity of long sea journeys continues to rapidly decline, Bischoff

attempts to realise his plans in Germany. With lots of vision and effort, he

succeeds in convincing the chairman of shipping company Hapag-Lloyd

that the plane is the mode of transport of the future. In September 1972 the

Hapag-Lloyd airline was founded. Hinrich Bischoff remained CEO until lea-

ving the company in 1976. Three years later, now active as a lawyer and art

expert, he drew the attention of many when he acquired the ailing Cologne

airline “Special Air Transport” (S.A.T.). For a symbolic single Deutschmark he

took over from the Turkish owners three Caravelle SE-210 machines but also

financial liability to the tune of 30 million D-Mark.

At this time it was still too risky for small and mid-size travel agencies to book

a whole plane. This gap in the market was filled by Bischoff. First with his

three small planes, transporting passengers from the Cologne-Bonn airport

via Barcelona to Majorca. Bischoff has experience and good connections

with TUI. It took him three years to restore the business. In 1985 the dollar rate

fell to 1.85 D-Mark and with it the price of kerosine, meaning that all German

airlines could profit from this. In this positive market situation, Bischoff foun-

ded Germania Fluggesellschaft mbH 1986, whereby the approval of operation

was transferred from S.A.T. to the newly founded sister company Germania.

Früher war Fliegen ein Luxus für wenige. Dann kam der Flugtourismus auf. Mit der Germania starten seit 1979 jährlich Mil-lionen von Passagieren in die Ferien, zu Freunden und Verwandten oder in atem-beraubende Metropolen. Die Maschinen waren jedoch nicht immer unter dem Namen Germania unterwegs.

Da die Beliebtheit langer Seereisen weiter rapide abnimmt, versucht

Bischoff, seine Idee in Deutschland umzusetzen. Mit viel Vision und

Engagement gelingt es ihm, den Vorstand der Reederei Hapag-Lloyd zu

überzeugen: Die Reise der Zukunft ist die Flugreise. So wird im September

1972 die Hapag-Lloyd-Fluggesellschaft gegründet. Hinrich Bischoff wird

Geschäftsführer, bis er dem Unternehmen 1976 den Rücken kehrt. Drei

Jahre später macht er wieder von sich Reden: Bischoff, inzwischen als an-

walt und Kunstsachverständiger tätig, kauft die marode Kölner „Special

air Transport“ (S.a.T.). Für eine symbolische D-Mark übernimmt er von

den türkischen Eignern drei Maschinen vom Typ Caravelle SE-210, aber

auch Verbindlichkeiten in Höhe von 30 Millionen Mark.

Zu dieser Zeit ist es für viele mittlere und kleinere Reiseveranstalter zu

riskant, ein ganzes Flugzeug zu buchen. In diese Marktlücke stößt Bi-

schoff, der zunächst mit seinen drei kleinen Fliegern Urlauber vom Flug-

hafen Köln-Bonn über Barcelona nach Mallorca bringt. Bischoff verfügt

über Erfahrung und gute Verbindungen zur TUI. Er benötigt drei Jahre,

um die Gesellschaft zu sanieren. als 1985 der Dollarkurs von 3,46 Mark

auf 1,85 Mark fällt und zudem der Kerosinpreis sinkt, profitieren alle

deutschen Fluggesellschaften. In dieser positiven Marktsituation gründet

Bischoff 1986 die Germania Fluggesellschaft mbH, wobei die Betriebsge-

nehmigung der S.a.T. auf die neugegründete Schwesterfirma Germania

übertragen wird.

Today, Germania, with its base in Berlin, transports 2,4 million holiday-

makers and business travellers annually. Germania flies to 141 international

destinations in Europe, North Africa and western Asia. Last year a subsidia-

ry, Gambia Bird Airlines Ltd., was founded in West Africa.

Back to the year 1987, when the first Boeing 737-300 bearing Germania’s

name took off. As Germania did not receive permission for domestic flights

from the Federal Ministry of Transport in Bonn, a cooperation was entered

into with German Lufthansa AG. A wet-lease contract ensured that for five

years two Germania 737-300 would fly for Condor, complete with the co-

lours and design of the customer. Germania aircraft were also used on Con-

dor charter flights from Berlin to Beirut.

This means that there are many passengers who have flown with Germania

without knowing it, for instance as a passengers with LTU and dba

(later airberlin). Maersk Air and Delta Air. But also the passengers who flew

with the Hapag-Lloyd Express (HLX) (later TUIfly) flew with Germania

machines. HLX was a constant eight-year cooperation between Germania

and TUI.

Heute verfügt der Reiseveranstalter alltours über 211 Reisebüros, weltweit

über 1.900 Mitarbeiter und arbeitet eng mit Germania zusammen.

den Hotels. Wir haben mit den Gästen das öffentliche Transport-

netz genutzt, also Linienbusse und Fähren.“

„alltours hat das Inselhüpfen auf den Kykladen erfunden.“

Griechenland angeboten. alltours war der erste Veranstalter mit

größte Veranstalter von Gay-Reisen. Erst später kamen Portugal

und Spanien als Destinationen hinzu.“

woran erinnern sie sich gerne?

„Die Vollcharter aus Hamburg mit unseren Partygästen waren

immer schnell ausgebucht. Die Bordcrews rissen sich darum, auf

diesen Flügen zu arbeiten, so gut war die Stimmung an Bord.“

was ist ihnen wichtig?

„Urlaub muss für Familien bezahlbar sein. Deshalb haben wir

auch Kinderfestpreise eingeführt. Diese Idee haben inzwischen

alle Veranstalter kopiert.“

haben sich die gäste verändert?

„auf jeden Fall. In den vergangenen Jahren sind die Gäste viel

anspruchsvoller geworden. Wir haben uns mit unserem angebot

darauf eingerichtet. In den 70er-Jahren fragte kein Gast nach

der anzahl der Hotelsterne. Heute wählen die meisten Kunden

anlagen mit vier oder mehr Sternen.“

Mr. verhuven, what was it like in 1974 as you opened your

travel agency for the Greek tourism market?

“1974 was by no means a good year to go on holiday in Greece. The

first trips fell exactly during the Cyprus crisis. War between Greece

and Turkey threatened. There were tanks in Athens and we were

right in the middle with our guests.”

so you started out in the middle of a catastrophe?

“Many hotels closed down. There was also the oil crisis, meaning

high surcharges for the expensive aviation fuel. Those aren’t exactly

good conditions for starting out.”

As a pioneer of Greek tourism you had to learn the hard way?

“Yes, but now I know Greece like the back of my hand. In the 1970s

there were no private busses for transfers to the hotels. We just used

the public transport with the guests, i.e. busses and ferries.“

Which idea are you particularly proud of?

“alltours invented island hopping on the Cyclades.”

then Greece became very popular?

“Into the 80s we only offered trips to Greece. alltours was the first

operator with a separate Greece catalogue. In addition we were the

biggest operator of gay trips. Portugal and Spain came later.”

What happy memories do you have?

“The full charter from Hamburg with our party guests was always

booked up very quickly. The cabin crew staff fought over who would

get to work these flights because the atmosphere on-board was so

good.”

What is important to you?

“Holidays must be affordable for families. This is why we introduced

fixed prices for children. This idea has since been copied by all of the

other operators.”

Have the guests changed?

“Certainly. In the last few years guests have become much more

demanding. We have adjusted our offer accordingly. In the 70s no

guest would ask how many stars a hotel has. Nowadays most guests

only choose hotels with four stars or more.”

Heute befördert die Germania mit Heimathafen Berlin-Schönefeld jähr-

lich 2,4 Millionen Urlauber und Geschäftsleute. Sie steuert 141 inter-

nationale Destinationen in Europa, Nordafrika und Westasien an. Im

vergangenen Jahr wurde zudem in Westafrika eine Tochtergesellschaft

gegründet, die Gambia Bird airlines Ltd..

Doch zurück ins Jahr 1987, als die erste Boeing 737-300 mit dem Fir-

mennamen Germania in den Himmel steigt. Da Germania keine Geneh-

migung für innerdeutsche Flüge vom Bundesverkehrsministerium in

Bonn erhält, schließt sie 1988 eine Kooperation mit der Deutschen Luft-

hansa aG ab. Ein so genannter Wet-Lease-Vertrag regelt, dass fünf Jah-

re lang zwei Germania-Boeing 737-300 für Condor unterwegs sind: mit

Beschriftung und der kompletten Bemalung in den Farben des Kunden.

Germania-Maschinen werden dabei auch bei Condor-Linienflügen auf

der Strecke Berlin – Beirut eingesetzt.

So gibt es viele Menschen, die schon mit Germania geflogen sind, ohne

es zu wissen – etwa auch als Fluggast von LTU und dba (später airberlin).

aber auch viele Passagiere, die von 2002 an mit Hapag-Lloyd-Express

(HLX) über den Wolken unterwegs waren (später TUIfly), flogen mit

Germania-Maschinen. Denn HLX war eine acht Jahre währende Koope-

ration zwischen Germania und TUI.

One of Hinrich Bischoff’s strengths was his ability to develop new business

ideas: Germania was the first German airline to market the body of its air-

craft as advertising space to companies such as Siemens. But also the col-

laboration as charter or split charter with renowned travel agents paid off

– above all with Schauinsland, Thomas Cook, TUI and alltours (see page 37)

Following the German reunification in 1991, Germania moved to Berlin-

Tegel. In the following summer Germania received the commission for the

so-called ”civil service shuttle“ for politicians, and ministry representa-

tives commuting between Bonn and Berlin. After this, Germania moved

its air traffic, maintenance and finally its administration to the airport

in the capital. Not scared to experiment, Germania tried its hand at bein-

ga discount airline in summer 2003 for around two years. But the brand

Germania Express, gexx, did not prove to be particularly lucrative.

Rumpf ihrer Flugzeuge als Werbefläche für Firmen wie etwa Siemens.

ten Reiseveranstaltern lohnt – unter anderem mit Schauinsland, Thomas

Cook, TUI und alltours (siehe Seite 37).

Nach der Wende zieht es Germania 1991 nach Berlin-Tegel. Im darauf-

folgenden Sommer erhält die Fluglinie den Zuschlag für den „Beamten-

Shuttle“ für Politiker und Ministeriale, die zwischen Köln-Bonn und Ber-

lin-Tegel pendeln. Daraufhin verlegt Germania Flugbetrieb, Technik und

anschließend Verwaltung an den Hauptstadtflughafen. Experimentier-

freudig tritt Germania ab dem Sommer 2003 rund zwei Jahre lang auch

als Billigfluggesellschaft auf. Doch die Marke Germania Express, kurz

gexx, die Flüge zum Festpreis anbietet, erweist sich als nicht sonderlich

lukrativ.

3.650 Sitzplätzen. „Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir mit der größten Germa-

nia-Flotte aller Zeiten in den Sommer starten“, sagt Oliver Pawel, Chief

Commercial Officer (CCO).

Es kommen auch ständig neue Destinationen hinzu: Im Winter 2014/

2015 startet die Germania erstmals auch von Flughäfen wie Hamburg,

Frankfurt oder Dresden zu klassischen Urlaubszielen in der Sonne. Die

Germania ist die einzige deutsche airline in Privatbesitz und erfreut sich

eines vorzüglichen Rufes. Sie erhielt 2010 das IOSa-Sicherheitszertifikat

der IaTa und gilt als eine der sichersten airlines weltweit.
