GISNEWSLETTER April 18, 2018 Mathematik Olympiade 2018 – Ehrung der Rechen-Asse der GISNY

Zum ersten Mal nahmen Schüler der GISNY an der Mathematik Olympiade teil. In zwei Runden

qualifizierten sich sieben Schüler der Klassen 5, 6 und 7 für die Landesrunde im Februar, in der sie in

einer (Klasse 5) bzw. zwei (Klasse 6 und 7) fünfstündigen Klausur/en knifflige Rechen- und

Logikaufgaben lösten. Vor den Osterferien konnten nun die Ergebnisse verkündet und die Teilnehmer

geehrt werden:

1. Platz: Max Wolfensberger (Klasse 5a)

2. Platz: Christina Seibert (Klasse 5b)

Den 3. Platz teilen sich:

Mathis Lübbert (Klasse 6)

Lasse Kucka (Klasse 6)

Helena Seibert (Klasse 7a)

Leo Brömme (Klasse 7a)

Lukas Reuschle (Klasse 7b)

Ab Klasse 8 können Schüler mit besonderen Leistungen im Landesfinale zum Bundesfinale nach

Deutschland eingeladen werden – vielleicht ist im Schuljahr 2018/19 ein Vertreter für die GISNY dabei?

Mathematics Olympiad 2018

For the first time, GISNY students participated in the Mathimatics Olympiad. Students from grades 5, 6,

and 7 qualified for the state finals in February, after taking a 5-hour exam solving tricky math and logics

problems. Before the spring break we honored the winners:

1. Place: Max Wolfensberger (Gr. 5a)

2. Place: Christina Seibert (Gr. 5b)

3. Place: Mathis Lübbert (Gr. 6), Lasse Kucka (Gr. 6), Helena Seibert (Gr. 7a), Leo Brömme (Gr. 7a), Lukas

Reuschle (Gr. 7b)

Congratulations! Winners in grade 8 and up become eligible for the national finals in Germany – perhaps

in 2018/19 GISNY will have a participant!

GISNEWSLETTER April 18, 2018 Track & Field News

The track team had their first home meet before the vacation. They competed in a dual meet against

the New York School for the Deaf and earned their first victory! The team faced tough competition, but

dominated overall. Our high school boys took first place in the 100m, 800m, 200m, and the 4x200

relay. Our high school girls won the 800m taking first and second place and were strong competitors in

the 200m where they earned second and third. The next meet is on Thursday at the Red Hook track in

Brooklyn. Go GIS!

Chess Team Update

Congratulations to the GIS Girls Chess Team for

winning 6th place in the K-3 Section of the NY State

All Girls Chess Championship 2018 (NEST+M

School, New York, NY) on Sunday, April 15th! Anja,

Viraya and Anaïs represented the school and did

very well! It is the first time that the GIS team

participated in this event. There were more than

270 girls playing, from schools all over NY.

Anja has made the Top 100 USA Girls’ List by the

United States Chess Federation (uschess.org). She

placed 72nd out of 100 of all the girls in the US for

her age (7 years old).

I would also like to congratulate the boys! On

Saturday, April 14th, Thomas won 1st place

(Championship) and Xavier won 3rd place (Reserve) in Brunswick School (Greenwich, CT). On Sunday,

April 15th, Thomas won 3.5/4 games to place 7th in the Hunter Chess tournament (Hunter College, New

York, NY). The Hunter chess tournament is one of the most competitive in NY, and was attended by

almost 400 players.

Thomas and Xavier are currently the top Grand Prix leaders for the fifth and fourth grades, respectively.

For the GIS trophy count, we currently have 21 team trophies and 34 individual trophies for this

school year.

The Glass House – New Canaan

Das Glass House wurde von dem berühmten Architekten Philip Johnson errichtet und diente ihm lange Jahre als Wohnhaus. Inspiriert von Mies von der Rohe, hatte Johnson großen Einfluss auf Architektur, Kunst und Design der zweiten Hälfte des 20.

Jahrhunderts. Besichtigen werden wir neben dem Glass House auch die Painting Gallery mit moderner Kunst aus Johnsons privater Sammlung und den Skulpturengarten. Wer sich in das Thema einlesen möchte, kann das gerne unter www.theglasshouse.org tun.

Beginn/Treffpunkt:

• 08:30 Uhr Auf dem GISNY Parkplatz. Wir fahren mit privaten PKWs.

• 10:00 Uhr Die geführten Touren beginnen um 10.00 Uhr bzw. um

10.20 Uhr (2 Touren à 13 Personen)

• $40.00 per Person

Max. Teilnehmerzahl: 26 Personen; es gilt das “first come, first served”-Prinzip.

The Glass House – New Canaan

The Glass House was built by the famous architect Philip Johnson. It was also his residence for many years. Inspired by Mies van der Rohe, he influenced significantly architecture, art and design during the second-half of the twentieth century. In addition to the Glass House, we will also visit the Painting Gallery with Johnson’s collection of modern art and his stunning sculpture garden. Please check out the

Meeting point:

• 08:30 am GISNY parking lot (Partridge Road). We will carpool

• 10:00 am Guided tours will start at 10:00 am and at 10:20 am (2 tours,

13 people each)

Cost:

• $40.00 per person

• Max. group size: 26 participants. Registration will be on a “first come, first

served” basis.
