Greetings to a l l ;1977 has got under with the usual fanfare# The political and ^ohbmio predictionsfor here are not very encouraging with expected r ises in'thfe" cbst of almost everything in the next few months. We have had a price freeze on and that ended Dec* %so practically everything will go up soon and some of i t -drastically# Most peopledon't seem too concerned with more spent for Christmasthan usual# Some of this wasbuying done with the idea tha t it was bet ter to go ahead before the increases# This

is th e real holiday boom now but tourist areas are repor ting for the f i r s t time inmany yeaxs that they have vacancies a t some of the popular resor t areas# The t ra f f icflow i s also down so perhaps the sqeese is start ing to affect some of the peopleMost are s t i l l taking 3"^ week holidays away from home# The weather has been prettygood during th i s Christmas, New Years time with mostly dry weather# It i s still no tvery--T-faim-SO"T~haven't* been swimming yet though the - res t of the family have been#Vfe-axe -^ad to b6"'pick3Hg"strawberries and greenr.beaias, onions, potatoes, andl e t tuce . The plums ^,bout a l l gone but they have been very good. The boys le f t on th6 i bicyc le t r ip on Dec. 6 and are now right a t the very southt ip of the South^.Is land# They have travelled about 1200 miles in 4 weeks. They havehad'tb'"replace, sc^e .spokes, and the rear t i res but l i t t l e trouble# They did get intoa few* dkysVjust be^fpre Christmas they they were riding into a twenty mile wind and i twas rainy aiid'cooi so tjiat was unpleasant# Now they are starting back up the westside* 6f'the'Sbiitl:^; island and hope to be back to Auckland by the end of this month. So far they have stopped, at four different families that we know sind will stop attwo. or three more so. they get some good food and res t occasionally. I t should be aneicperience'they will remember for a long time. Laurie is getting along quite wellby herselfV here, a t .,home.December was fair ly busy month here a t the church. On iDec. 5 we had a young man .. .here to tell, us.al^ut his trip to the Church of Christ mis3ioii field in Papua NewGuinea#He is'an,. ,^i.ec.trician so he spent several weeks there helping get their-electricalfsyst^s j^^ order. It is a wild rugged area and mostly pretty primitive/".. The jungle a4:^ .^ass grows rapidly but the soil is not really very productive. We had a planning meeting by the Church Eoard on Dec. ^ td plan the program for 1977This was a. general review of what has been done in the p^st and condsideration ofchanges that could be made to improve our outreach tc>' the community. I thought i twas a very positive meeting. On Saturday the 11th we had a pitch-in meal a t 5*30 pm.involving the Sxmday School children and their paren ts p lus ^yone else who wantedto attend# This was followed with a Christmas program. We had 85 present which waspre t ty good fo r us. There.,is the.*idea t ha t Sunday School i s only fo r children up toabout 12 so few adults take any part. We a re try ing to overcome that and have ana du lt c la ss but it. i s small . This was the f i r s t t ime in many yeaxs if ever t ha t thepro^am was a Christmas one but is was welli.xeceived. The next day there was adedication of a house pf one of the members which we took par t in as well as the.. r egular morning and evening services . The fol lowing wefek I had a wedding and po t h e rhouse ded icat ion p lus we had the Sherwood Smiths from Cincinnati Bible Seminary asour guests, from Friday night to Monday morning. He preached a t both of the Sunday services, on the 19th. On Christmas Day we had a church service a t 9O0 a.m. and thenhad lunch with one family and supper with another. V/ith a four day weekend l a s tweek and again th i s week everything cer ta in ly seems confused. Ue have so manyfamilies on holiday now tha t the l a s t two weeks we have only" had 5^ fon.the morningservice and a"bout 25 fo r the evening. For the whole year we ave raged 7^ of morningand ^5 of evening. We are being h it hard this summer with 1 gir l already moved to .Australia^ 1- soon to leave for Jingland and a family of U leaving in Felaruary forAustrsLlia.tve can' t replace these but we \tlll have -to seek fof others more diligently.\;6 have received a number o f l e t t e r s and cea:xis from d i f f e r en t ones dur ing t h i sChristmas season. \;e apprecia ted hearing from each oner. It was sad to hear of theaccident of Dennis Kerley. Some of th es e t hi ng s are d i f f i cu l t to understand andaccept but we must s t i l l continue to place our t rus t in the Lord. We' appreciated the =cards but I really ,question- i f they are worth the high pos tage . IMless you are send--ing a picture--ofsomething-i4-seems-bettor juo t to uoo an acrogrammo#\te-receiveda l e t t e r from Ruth's mother today saying it was 9 below zero w ith snow on the groundso tha t made me happy to be here where it is about 70 degrees, and a lawn tha t needsto be cut# The water si tuat ion sounds pretty bad fo r the Adrian -axea. That kindof si tuation threatens f requent ly but seldom actually develops. I wish you couldhave some o f ou r s s i nc e it r a i n s so o fte n h er e. Ours is now measured i n mi l l ime t e r sbut we had something close to 60 inches l a s t year. It does keep everything nice andgreen th e year around.I can ' t really .think of much of interest th is month so I will "just stop. We dopray for you a l l God's blessings during th is new yeat. Dear Adrian F r i e n d s ,Ue a r e sorry t o hear o f the bad weather you a l l have been having t h i s January. >.3poor as the television coverage i s h ere th ey have had some pictures of the U.S. Lastn i h t it was o f Ohio on the e a r l y news and then some on Buffalo, New York on thel a t e r news. It a l l made me glad I wasn ' t there i n i t ," e have had mostly good weather here this month with a small amount of rain. The temperatures are colder thanthey should be f o r the season but s t i l l nicer I have not ' y e t been swimming and probably won't unless i t warms up a b i t , Ruth and the kids have been a few times. Wea r e enjoying our s t rawberr ies y e t with about t hre e q ua rts every two days r i g h t new.We a l s o have l e t t u c e , onions, g re en b ea ns , cucumbe rs , a nd rhubarbs I have a hardtime growing tomatoes since it doesn' t get hot enough. Most of themr.are grown i nhot houses and.-they .are a common part- of the d i e t even a t 30-30 cents a pound.Gucumbers_are 16 cent s- a piece and then are so big and seedy we don*t l ike them. Most people eat a l o t of f r u i t and vegetables but it i s never cheap. The price freezewent o f f the f i r s t of January, so most things e i t h e r have or are going up. Cannedgoods about 3 cents a. can-and milk ^ cents a gallon i s an example. This ,means theunions are . crying for a 12 percent wage Increase for everyone and off* we will goagain .

We have been sorry to hear of the unjuries and i l lnesses and pray tha t you are a l lon th e way to recovery. We do remember you in our prayers regularly. We are a l lhaalthy and getting bigger and f a t t e r depending on the age invo lved . Lau rie hasgrown a l o t !ii the past few months and begins to look l ike a young lady. The boysare now both over six foot. They got back" from their bicycle t r i p l a s t Friday. Theytraveled right around the south tip of the country and back up for a total distanceof somewhere over 2200 miles. I t took them 8 weeks by th e time they stopped and didsome sight seeing. Some of that country i s pret ty mountainous so they have comeback pretty f i t / Ricky took several pictures and of course they have several experiences to t e l l about so i t has been quite a suihmer for themo Kirk went back toschool today and Laurie begins tomorrow. Ricky doesn't begin t i l l about March 1.Kirk is now the equivalent of a high school senior. Laurie would be a sophomore andRicky begins xmiversity. He was able to pass his examination so he will receivefree education and $18 per week from the government for going. He. plans to enrollas an ophtometry studentEverything here at church goes into recess dur ing the summer holidays so thisweek we begin again. Tonight i s board meeting and tomorrow night we begin havingprayer meetings in different houses with four meetings going on a t once. Next Sun-day^he Sunday-School begins so Ruth-iias-been busy organizing that since she is theSupt . now. We put out some material to the homes today so a l l should be ready now.She has also become more Involved in the Opportunity Shop run by the- church so sheis well occupied. Now that everything i s goi^g again I will be back to my usualr o u t i n e .We spent a week at Wellington this month which was interesting. Weather wise i twas not so nice since i t rained nearly every day. I t was pretty going down and coming back so that helped a lot. We stayed vrith the LaFollettes and the Fouts wereup from Mataura so we had aiio ther American reunion. While we were there they had thestrongest earthquake for quite some time so we were Impressed by their efforts toentertain us. I t knocked dovm a few telephone poles and disrupted some piping butthat vias about al l . We didn' t see any of the damage. You may have seen In theTimes or Newsweek where they had bad floods down there a few weeks ago just beforeChristmas. We saw some of t h a t and was i n one of the homes which had been i n thepath of a mud slide. Much of this soil i s unstable clay and rock so slides arefrequent and then in areas where housing has been built on the side of the hills i tis r e a l l y t r e a c h e r o u s .An Australian Church- of Christ tour party worshipped with us early in the monthand then had lunch with us a t the church. I t was I nt er es ti ng to v i s i t with them. Most wete from West Australia which i s a dry country. Large numbers of Australianscome over every;-year but most a re not Chr is tians so we don't see them. No passport~s~~xequired between "Uie' t w coufi trifc;s and the fare i s about $300 round trip so theexchange is common. Several young people from various Churches of Christ aroundthe country attended a Youth Convention in Tasm^ia this year and most either touredb e f o r e o r after t h e C o n v e n t i o n 0By this time next year we should have been back to see you and returned here onceagain. Time seems to be passing more rapidly each year so perhaps I am beginningto get older. At least their are more grey hairs beginning to show up. Our prayersgo with you.

    Hay. 1 , 1977Dear Adr ian Fr i e nds ,Dad i s n ' t sick or anything i t s j u s t tha t he forgot whether or not he had wri t teno r n o t and I o f f e r ed t o do i t so he s a i d I cou l d .

VJe had 87 a t church t h i s morning. There were around about 16 teenagers whichwas pre t ty good because severa l have dropped out la te ly but they seem to be s ta r t ingto come back aga in .

Next week-end i s our family camp. Ue are expect ing around for ty people to bethere a ll or part of the time. Ross Hayward who was over in America last year isgoing to be the speaker. Our May holidays begin this Friday from school. We justhad our exams and now we ge t a two V7eek break.

There was a youth t r ip to VJellsford where v/e met with some o f the kids from thereand went to a cave which contained glow worms. It was on somebody pr iva te propertywith the bulls . I t was pitch black inside the cave and the guys that knew the wayaround ran o ff and l e f t everybody else to t ry and fig ure o ut how to go. There was abarbeque af ter we came out and then we came home mud packed from a l l the slipping ands l i d i ng we had done i n th e cave .

The boys p la ye d a no th er game of club b as ke tb al l h ut they d idn ' t spoi l the i r goodrecord . They have p la yed about s ix o r seven games and haven ' t won one ye t . Kirks tar ted playing a t school on Friday. They won thei r game. He and the other Americanon the team were the high scorers* The o the r American i s an exchange s tuden t fromTenn e s s e e .

Mom and Dad have gone fo r a walk to the beach. I th ink its a b i t cold fo r t h a tbecause the wind i s b lowing and it has been raining off and on a l l day. I giiessi t s get t ing ready for school tomorrow.

    I*m kni t t ing a scar f r igh t now to match the mittons and hat I made l a s t year .It seems l ike everyone in New Zealand knows how to kni t . They don ' t a l l during thesummer bu t as soon as it s t a r t s to cool o ff everyone drags ou t t h e i r kni t t ing andg e t s to work on it.

I have to go to the den t i s t tomorrow so I have to ge t out of school during 6thperiod and walk down to the Bay. I t ' s funny how you never notice the holes in yourteeth but the dent i s t sure does. He sends for you every s ix months for a check-up^n t i l you get out of school. This par t of the government plan .

Rick 's been having a b i t of t rouble get t ing to school because of the busses being on str ike. They raised the fa i rs but the guys are s t i l l on st r ike . The Sucklanddrivers don' t want to be but they have to str ike with the union so they have l i t t l echoice. He has been going with one of the boys from the s t r e e t up. This worksou t okay unless the l ec tures end a t d i f f e r en t t imes then they have the bother ofwai t i ng fo r each o t h e r .

Kirk and I walk to school unless we can get one o f otir f r iends to give us alift.

Daddy i s in charge of a junior camp during the second week of t he hol id ay s.They d idn ' t think there were going to be many kids but know it looks l ike theremay be quite a few af ter a l l . Mom's going to be the cook and I 'm jus t going. Theboys are staying a t home I think. They haven ' t made up thei r minds yet .

    I 'm not going to read th is because i f I did I probably couldn ' t mail it sohere it i s for the Adrian Newsletter. Should give a dif fe rent insight of l ive inNS t h a n u s u a l .

Dear Friends ,iiay has come and gone which means for us there has been a school holiday (2 weekt>for ICirk and Laurie, three weeks for Ricky) and now everyone is back to the noormalroutine. The f i r s t week of the holdiay was beautiful sunshiny, weather up to a nicetemperature every day. The water i s nice and calm every day so . I even got out earl jone morning about 6:30 and vrent fishing. Ue caught 9 nice red snapper ranging from

about k pounds to about 7 pounds. There were four of us and I got one so that wasabout norraal. Me had some of it fresh and some as smoked fish, sp we have done quitewell. Besides that it was a beaut i ful day ,t o be out . The second week was muchcolder and some rain and now we have been haying qui te a lo t . of rain and st rong wind;Since this i s the beginning of th e w in ter season it is to be expected. I t i s niceto hear about you r warm weather and growing gardens, l/e do s t i l l have some goodcabbage and cauliflopjer plus some scrawny broccoli.Prices here have really been skyrocketing this month. The government has con trol ,on a l l prices and wages but .th is month was the end of one type of control and manythings went up. The report was that yesterday there were to be 100 increases in footitems. Some of them can be quite big such as ;an increase of 1 dollar per 4 ounce ja ;of ins tan t coffee. Some of the housewives have orgsnized a boycott of some items .where they th ink the company is making too much profit but i t hasn't amounted tomuch. Like everyxjhere there i s discontentment with one sector t hink ing the other i soutdoing them so we are.Jiaving lo t s of industr ia l disputes and work stoppages.I t all helps one to realize the futil i ty of placing too much emphasis on the th ingso f this wor ld .IJe have had two camps involving the church this month. The f i rs t weekend was afamily camp just for our congregation. About 45 took part in this and were pleasedwith i t . Our guest speaJcer was a preacher from Christchurch. He talked about theChris t ian home and the church. This i s an annual event fo r us now and has been wellreceived. The weather was beautiful a t tha t time which aliiays helps. This speakerwent on north to see some of h is r el at iv es and then came back tbrough the next weekand held a one n i ^ t meeting a t the church with about 50 rpesent. The second campwas a junior camp for kids from 9"*13* I"'' was combined with the Otera church ofChrist so we had 13 kids from there and 12 from here. Ruth did the cooking withLaurie's help and the other preacher and myself led the studies. I t was quite anexpT?i.ence and one where you wonder how much you have taught but you hope something. One thing w learned was that kids that age here are never qfi iet. They are notrequired to be quiet at school so i t is hard to get them s t i l l for Sunday School orchurch either. Some of th ese k id s axe from completely nonChristian homes so wehope we had an influence on th^. Host of the ones from here come to Sunday Schooland to our after school program so we have more opportunity to teach and influencethem. So many of our teenagers have not come up through the Sunday School so theirBible knowledge is minimal. This causes Ibhem to be easily misled into all kindsof denominational errors. :Ve hope that with enough time and error some of this canbe avoided fo r the ones coming up now. Each Sunday night of th is month we have been seeing one of the Visualized BibleSeries put out by the noninstrumental people. They are explicit and I think welldone. Our attendance only run 30-35 tu t I think they have been Tjorth while, ]!e havea couple of people who saw them who are not members. Even for the old time membersthere is a need to be reminded particularly since there is so much trend away fromthe definite Bible teachings anymore. When the majority of the people of the areatliinks one belief is as good as another it is diff icul t to teach young people that *the Scr ip tu re s a re the only rule of fa i th and pract ice.Kirk had his f i r s t basketball game for the school season l a s t week. I went towatch but it was not a very good game. The school they played is a new one with moreyounger players. The f inal score was 70 to 21 and could have been worse i f the coachhere had wanted to be mean. Kirk got 28 points so he was pleased. He is the captaino f th e team t h i s year .I4y-folks seem-to-have^ sett led-v^y-well a t

Dear Adrian Fr iends ,A touch of spring is in the air so many people have been out working in theirgardens and cleaning the yards. I even planted a couple of tomato plants lastMonaay but since i t has been colder with showers every few minutes so that hascooled some of my enthusiasm. The ground is still wet and cold so most stuff ivillhave to wait another nionth or so. Ruth is v/orking today in changing the ChurchOpportunity Shop over to summer stuff but a coat still feels mighty good. Isuppose for you school has started once again and the first football game should

be about this Friday night, 'winter is not too far behind that and xiith the comingof winter we will also be expecting to come and see you. liinter will arrive firstsince i t is probable i t v/ill be mid January before x*;e arrive at Adrian. Ourschedule is a bit flexible but not much since we will only have six weeks and severajplaces we want to go to. Other than the thought of the cold weather v/e are lookinciforward to th e v i s i t .This month was the annual business meeting of our congregation. This is a timeV7hen new officers are elected for the coming year. This year we have one newdeacon to replace a man who resigned recently. The other officers remained thesame. It is also a time for reports from each organisation of what they havebeen doing during tlie year including their financial report. There is actuallya little booklet mimeographed out to show all tliis and the meeting is fairlyformal. There is a time for new business and general comments so i t can belengthy some years. This time was not too bad although there was some timewasted on trivial items such as hov/ the flowers v/ere to be taken care of.General attitude of the congregation is fairly good right now with a desire tobecome more evangelistic in the community. We have had internal problems but theseseem about sorted out so i t is possible to concentrate more on evangelism. Doorot door evangelism doesn't seem to accomplish much so we will be working more inthe area of advertising special events and also in promoting the Sunday School. Our youth program is also badly in need of revitalizing so that will be a major-concern this year. Like all congregations there is never a time to s it s ti ll . Aboutthe time i t looks like things are going good i t can fall apart i f you do not work atThere have been several church activities during the month, lie had a pot luck

supper and farnily service the first Sunday night that was well attended. One familywas farewelled back to Australia on that Sunday. Acouple of sports evenings wereheld and then four teams entered a District indoor bowls competition. Thereare four on a teani so our family entered and found out we didn't do too v/ell at theforeign game. It was an enjoyable evening. There was a District youth camp thismonth that Ricky and Laurie attended. Some parts of i t i^ere good and some marred bythe conduct of some of the youth. This week we have had a team of students fromWoolwich Bible College in Sydney, Austialia with us for a couple of days. They areover here on a tour to encourage new students. We enjoyed the visit with themand bade them farewell yesterday to go on south. Hext v/eek Dr. Lewis Foster fromCincinnatti Bible Seminary is to be with us for a couple of nights and speak forout Sunday night service, his wife and daughter are with him. He is presently aguest lecturer at Uoolwich and took tlie opportunity to come over and visi t NewZealand. This is the school holiday period for New Zealand and Australia. Thekids get three weeks off now and then for back for their final term. Many peopletravel somewhere during this time which is hard on church attendances. We have tv;of^.ilies in Fiji and one up north plus there have been others gone for a shortertime. All wil l return back to normal next weekend.I vi7as sorry to hear of the death of David Casey. He had so much ta lent that i twill be a great loss to the Church as well as to his family. Life goes on and sinceour residence on earth is but temporary we must expect sickness and death. We canthank our God for the promise of a glorious life eternal for His people. As servantsJesus each of us ought to be thankful for every opportunity to serve.Sometimes we look at others and think v/e are overworked compared to them but whatwe should be looking at is how we compare \jith our Lord and then wi^vwin aivmyc:h um b l e .I believe the Church Growth emphasis has a lot to comment i t . Acongregationmust plan to grow and evaluate how this can take place before i t will grow. Aslong as we are simply str iving to hold our own i t is a losing battle. If youhaven't read them I would suggest getting a hold of same of the books of PaulBenjamin and Win Am. There a re quite a few books out and a few films on ChurchGrowth tha t wre well worth examining.

    Our prayers are with you a l l .Hub e r t

Dear Adr ian Friends ,l:e thought about you when t he r epor ts came out about the heavy rains and flooding

    i n Kansas City but l a t e r found out you were fortunate and d i d n ' t get tha t kind ofrains. I t was in the papers here and even a l i t t l e b i t on the TV. Mostly what weget of Stateside news on TV i s jus t small f i l l e r items but anything big i s reportedalthough frequently without any pictures. R i ^ t now the Prime Minister of NewZealand i s i n Hevr York f o r the I n t e r n a t i o n a l Monetaary Fund meeting so h i s a c t i v i t i e sare reported here although you are probably not even aware he i s over there . He i sone ofthose who seems to j u s t open his mouth and l e t f l y Without doing much thinkingabout what he says so frequently he i s in c on fl ic t with some one. I suppose the maina c t i v i t i e s a t the.moment would be getting the crops in so the b i l l s can be paid ands t a r t again nex t s pr ing.

    Ear ly t h i s month we had a v i s i t fr om Lewis P o s t e r and h i s \jfe and d a u ^ t e r fromGincinnatt i Bible Seminary. He i s guest l e c t u r e r a t Sydney t h i s term and tookopportunity a t mid term break there to come over f o r a v i s i t . Me had a nice v i s i tand he spoke fo r us on a Sunday evening. They wil l be leaving Sydney about mid-October and return to the States by way of Thailand and India to a r r i v e back aboutthe f i r s t of the year. Two American preachers and t h e i r families were due to arr ivehere in September to begin a ministry here but we don't know i f they have arrivedor not. lie T/ere supposed to meet one of them and keep them overnight so we went dovmto the airport on a Sunday night to meet a plane a t 12850 am. l/e waited and waitedfo r everyone to clear cus toms and f inal ly found out they were not on it so we gothome about 2:15 am. l/e assume they came in l a t e r tout haven' t heard f rom anyone yet .They were to go on to the South Is land so we d o n ' t have much contact .

    The kids have been busy iaking tes ts the past week but are finished today so Lauriei s helping our neighbor lady get some things ready to put in the mail for her husband*business and Kirk i s gone with one of his friends over to the city. The friend i s tohave a job interview and then they were to go to the museum and f inally to a boatshow (biggest in the Southern Hemisphere the advertising says). They will have afew weeks before they begin t h e i r final exams a t the end of the school year. Rickbegins his a t the l ^ i v e r s i t y on Oct. 19 and then they s t r e t c h out f o r about a month.After t h a t it i s another month o r so before he f i n d s out t h e r e s u l t s . Right nowhe has been d i s s e c t i n g f i s h and o t h e r animals .

The weather ha^ been generally cold and rainy but there are defini te signs ofspring such as some of the trees budding. Temperatures axe generally about 60 for ahigh and 50 fo^: a low. i.'hen the sun shines it i s nice and i f it i s raining that i scold. My two tomato plants are grovring but one i s imder a glass shelter and the otheihas a plastic windbreak aroimd i t .
