Richard PrinceSuper Group
Orbison, Chuck D, Bill Evans, Patsy Cline, The Pretenders, und Lee Ranaldo
While Richard Prince is most often discussed for his strategies as an appro-
priation artist—from Marlboro cowboys in the 1980s to Instagram portraits
today—it is his own work as a painter that stands at the center of his approach:
starting with paintings of jokes and cartoons, following up with, among
other things, nurses and cowboys taken from the covers of dime novels, and
freewheeling riffs on Picasso and de Kooning. For his extensive new series
Super Group, Prince uses objects loaded with meaning: the inner sleeves of
vinyl records, which he collages on the canvas and then overpaints with band
names, abstract washes, and funny figures. The book shows 51 works, engaging
with questions of our identity—after all,
we define ourselves by the music we listen
to. In two texts the artist explores the
cultural ramifications and shares the joy of
discovery: “I’d been working with sleeves
on and off for four years, they weren’t
right, they weren’t finished. They didn’t
have extra extra. They had a verse and
bridge but they didn’t have a hook. Super
Group became the hook. I can stack Roy
Orbison, Chuck D, Bill Evans, Patsy Cline,
The Pretenders, and Lee Ranaldo on one
sleeve . . . The whole sleeve can be a hit.”
Accordingly, this whole volume can be
a hit, translating Prince’s vision through
images and texts into an artist’s book.

Fernsehen. Der Titel seiner Ausstellung in der Galerie Max Hetzler, Fire walk
with me, ist von David Lynch entlehnt und nähert sich im Dialog verschiedener
Werkgruppen an das Thema der Conditio humana an: Undead still lifes,
in denen die Natur in beinahe postimpressionistischen Baumlandschaften
auswuchert; Sky paintings, deren Farbkraft symbolische Inhalte transportiert;
War paintings, inspiriert durch Kopfschmuck und Bemalung der Indianer;
organisierten Ausstellung: You know nothing Raymond, eine Hommage an
Raymond Hains.
Jérémy Demester takes on the nature of art and the artifice of myth—old
myths from the taming of fire, and new myths produced by television. His
exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin borrowed its title, Fire walk with
me, from David Lynch for a lateral exploration of the human condition with
several work groups involved in a dialog: Undead still lifes, in which almost
postimpressionist trees grow into luxurious landscapes; Sky paintings, where
glorious color carries a symbolist meaning; War paintings, inspired by the
headgear and facial markings of the American Indian; and, in the center, two
totem-like sculptures, a bronze dog with its head sawed off and a BMX bike with
the skull of a ram as a figurehead. The book presents all works in full detail and
in exhibition shots illustrating the way in
which the separate parts interacted in the
space. The images are accompanied with
an essay on the show’s mythical themes by
the art critic and psychoanalyst Annabelle
Gugnon. Additionally, the publication
contains a booklet of a concurrent show
Demester organized for the gallery: You
know nothing Raymond, an homage to the
late Raymond Hains. Here the young artist
selects works by his older peer, the title in
tribute to Hains’ never flagging curiosity,
and the selection of works attesting to
the visual, even painterly, qualities of his
conceptual oeuvre.

Raymond HainsVenice
A dozen years after his death, Raymond Hains was again among the stars of
the Venice Biennale 2017 with a central display in the main exhibition. Both
the display and the glowing reviews proved the central place Hains holds in
contemporary art practice, with his open conceptual approach that makes
free use of places and materials, optical effects and wordplay, and various
documentation strategies. In fact Hains had a long history with the city. He
moved to Venice in 1964, remaining in Italy for the rest of the decade. Here
he split his artistic personality into the characters Saffa and Seita, two fictional
artists that took their names from the Italian and French national companies
for tobacco. In the same year he also presented the Biennale déchirée (Torn
Biennial) as lacerated posters on canvas, and in 1968 the Biennale éclatée
(Shattered Biennial), for which he deformed the catalog covers of each nation
through a prism and rendered it in plexiglas relief. Also including several
mixed-media installations and a number of macintoshages—a work group
started in the late 1990 for which the artist superimposed images on a computer
screen—the book investigates Hains’ fruitful relationship with Venice, guided
by an essay from art historian and curator Hervé Vanel.

Christopher Wool
Each new Christopher Wool exhibition digs deeper into methods established
and questions raised by his work. His approach revolves around repetition,
erasure, and layering, focusing on essential elements like form, line, and color.
Wool shapes and reshapes the form almost like a sculptor kneading clay. As a
subtle gesture, a small sculpture stands as the centerpiece of this exhibition at
Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, made from pigmented concrete as barely shaped
torso. Around it, Wool presents works on paper and large-sized paintings: a
portfolio of lithographs titled Portraits (red), whose central reddish mass is
laid out flat in Ben-Day dots; another lithograph series titled a.k.a. that uses
lettering within lines as a means of composition; small silkscreen prints heavily
overpainted with rough brushstrokes; and huge canvases in rich shades of
black that congeal into forms from the artist’s early Rorschach series. The book
presents images of all works along with black-and-white installation views
photographed by the artist himself. It is wrapped in a dust jacket that can be
unfolded as a poster designed by Wool specifically for the exhibition.

In these forty works on paper made in 1993, we can observe how Günther Förg
gradually constructs his artistic thoughts. The compositions focus on clearly
formulated ideas, while in their lively and spontaneous execution the artist’s
hand comes to the fore—not by coincidence the hand is also a recurring motif
in these works. Some of the pages feature crosshatchings, squares, and vertical
slashes opening up the picture ground, looking like possible preparatory
sketches for later paintings. Other pages are more casual, random thoughts in
which figurative elements can be discerned: heads, globes, knees, mountains,
and again hands. This book, published in an edition limited to 300 copies,
introduces us to these drawings compiled as a series by Förg and reproduced
in their original format—allowing us to meet an artist who uses the tensions
between abstraction and figuration, geometry and spontaneity with a virtuoso
directness.
