Köln ruft Cologne is callingDie Rheinstadt mit allen Sinnen erleben. Von Annemarie Fischer. Experience the Rhine city with all your senses. By Annemarie Fischer
“Cologne continues to serve as a pil-grimage town; its calling remains quitemysterious, though rather wholesome ofnature,” German author Heinrich Böll oncenoted in his essay “What is Colognian?”.Cologne is a melting pot combining 2,000years of history with culture, carnival andculinary indulgences. In-between yourbusy IDS calendar, you should definitelyfollow its calling.
Wandering through the streets, youmight notice that Colognians speak in avery melodious tongue that sounds muchsofter than standard German. This is the“Kölsch” dialect, which shares its namewith the speciality beer that is only brewedhere. Therefore, it is the only language onecan drink, hear, speak and, hopefully, singby the end of the evening. The soul and thespirit of Cologne are in its pub culture, to be found in the epitome of the brewhouseslocated in the small corner pubs aroundthe Cologne Ring boulevard. For a taste ofCologne, try one of the typical brewhouse
foods, Himmel un Ääd (heaven and earth),a dish of apple sauce (heaven) mixed withmashed potato (earth), or Soorbrode, a beefroast with a sweet-sour sauce of raisinsand red cabbage.
If you are in the mood for dessert, maybe consider a chocolate tasting at theImhoff chocolate museum, built and run in collaboration with chocolatiers of Lindtand Hussel. Here you can learn abouteverything related to chocolate produc-tion, from its Mayan and Aztec beginningsto modern times.
Smelling CologneFruity bergamot, lemon, orange or re-
laxing lavender, Cologne is a fragrant city, particularly known for the eau-de-CologneKölnisch Wasser 4711, which was createdby Italian perfumer Johann Maria Farina in1792. The number 4711 was derived fromthe house number of the factory premisesin the Glockengasse during the Napoleonicera. The Farina Fragrance Museum, whereone can listen to a Glockenspiel every hour, pays tribute to the birthplace of the finescent, and even offers workshops to createyour very own fragrance.
Cologne landmarksThe heart of Cologne and the most
visited German tourist attraction is the Roman Catholic cathedral (Kölner Dom),the largest Gothic church in northern Eu-rope. If you are interested in discoveringover 2,000 years of European history, theRomano-Germanic Museum covers every-thing you ever wanted to know aboutCologne’s Roman Rhine connection. Itscurrent exhibition on modern archaeol-ogy is dedicated to a unique find: modernsculptures, believed to have been de-stroyed by the Nazi regime as “degenerateart”, were recently uncovered and exca-vated during construction works in Berlin.
Do also consider paying a visit to oneof the many museums of modern art, in-cluding the Museum Ludwig, which hostsone of the largest pop art collections outsideof the US. There, visitors can also indulge in the all-organic local delicacies offered by the chic modern décor restaurant andenjoy a breath-taking view over the city.
If interior decorating excites you, stop bythe Museum of Applied Art, which presentsEuropean manufacturing mastery from theMiddle Ages to modern times. It is currentlyholding a special exhibition that exploresdaily life in Cologne at the advent of WorldWar I, “Köln 1914. Metropole im Westen”(Cologne 1914. Western Metropolis).
In the Carnival Museum, one can gaina sense of the spirit of carnival, which iscelebrated every year in February in thecity with one of the largest street festivalsin Europe.
In this spirit, “Kölle Alaaf!” (Cologneabove all!)
