Welcoming AdressGrußwort

Scientific progress and innovations are based on international exchange. It is therefore important to involve young scien-tists in international projects at an early stage. Improving the attractiveness and international visibility of the range of doctoral studies at our universities is one of many stepping stones towards enhancing Germany‘s international make-up as a top research location. To achieve this we must pool re-sources, heighten the profile of our universities, improve men-toring and encourage both the international mobility of doc-toral students and cooperation between German and foreign institutions of higher education in providing doctoral training by introducing international doctoral programmes.

Structured, internationally focused doctoral training strategies such as those which the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is supporting under the ”International Doctorates in Germany“ (IPID) programme aim precisely in this direction. The IPID programme is intended to both encourage outstand-ing graduates from foreign institutions of higher education to study for a doctorate in Germany and to promote the estab-lishment of long-term specialized cooperation between Ger-man and foreign partner universities and enable the testing of new innovative bi-national doctoral models. The Federal Min-istry of Education and Research is making a total of 12 million euros available for this purpose between 2010 and 2013.

This brochure provides an overview of the many different IPID doctoral programmes and thereby contributes towards mak-ing international doctorates a constituent part of the range of doctoral studies at our universities. The objective is to attract large numbers of doctoral candidates to these projects and make Germany even more appealing as a leading centre of science and innovation.

ForewordVorwort

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been promoting undergraduates, graduates, doctoral students and young researchers for many years in order to offer them op-timum development opportunities and foster international exchange. In addition to individual support, the optimisation of underlying structural conditions is being assigned an ever more important role to help Germany consolidate its strong position in the global knowledge community and remain an attractive cooperation partner.

Scholars pursuing a doctoral degree play a very key role in the generation of innovative new ideas in research. With more than 25,000 doctoral degrees every year – one of the highest number of PhDs produced by any country in the world – Ger-many has tremendous potential. The question is whether this potential is being utilised in an optimum manner at present. Can we profit from growing international mobility among young researchers? Are doctoral students prepared for profes-sional life in the international context and are their valour and enthusiasm aroused in such a manner as to motivate them and put them in a position to embrace future challenges?

German universities are addressing these questions intensive-ly and instituting optimally designed PhD programme struc-tures that will be viable in the future. Thanks to the funding already provided by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the DAAD is able to support them along this path and foster the development of internationally focused, struc-tured PhD programmes in the programme “International pro-movieren in Deutschland“. The remarkable response to our programme underscores the great need for it.

The spectrum of projects funded ranges from highly special-ised programmes at small universities seeking to offer bi-national PhD degrees together with highly reputed partner universities abroad all the way to large graduate schools with more than 100 doctoral students. This Brochure presents these PhD programmes. I hope that it will prove profitable reading for future doctoral students as well as other readers.

Structured PhD-programmes – perceive new opportunities, take advantage of existing potential in an optimum mannerPromotion mit Struktur – neue Chancen erkennen, vorhandene Potentiale optimal erschließen

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the establishment and expansion of internationally focused, structured PhD programmes with funding from the Federal Ministry for Education and Research in the programme “International promovieren in Deutschland“ (IPID). The main objectives of IPID are:– to encourage highly qualified foreign graduates to obtain

a PhD in Germany– to initiate and foster international cooperation between

universities and– to boost the quality and expand the variety of doctoral

programmes at German universities

In comparison to individual doctoral degrees based on the traditional model, structured doctoral programmes offer transparent conditions with regard to access, assistance bet-ter tailored to meet the needs of doctoral students and the possibility for PhD students to obtain knowledge and skills in a targeted manner through supplemental services success-fully preparing them for an international environment within or outside of academia. Especially for excellent PhD gradu-ates from countries with more highly structured educational systems, structured doctoral programmes offer a weighty argument for obtaining a doctoral degree in Germany.

In a globalised world, curriculum vitaes and pathways to a PhD are no longer linear. They may differ considerably, rather, in terms of the point in time when students begin their stud-ies and the manner in which they obtain their PhD degree. Structured PhD programmes seek to take this “diversity“ into account through programmes which can be adjusted to meet individual needs.

The DAAD is offering a funding scheme in the guise of IPID which makes it possible to try out innovative new doctoral studies models in the actual field of practice. Especially with regard to international PhD students, but also doctoral projects which are highly interdisciplinary, certain structural elements offer a solid foundation upon which to develop individual research all the more productively. Thus struc-tured doctoral programmes contribute to a reduction in the drop-out rate while helping boost the number of foreign PhD students and making Germany even more internationally competitive as a centre of research and science.

According to figures published by the Federal German Sta-tistics Office in 2012, only 8 % of all doctoral students are pursuing their degrees in structured programmes at present. There continues to be a major need for the development of innovative structured doctoral programmes The great interest on the part of universities in establish-ing structured doctoral programmes was underscored by a two-day conference staged by the DAAD in Berlin in October 2011. Under the banner of “Obtaining an International Doc-torate in Germany – Paths towards Future-Oriented Doctoral Training“, more than 180 representatives from universities from all over Germany attended the event in order to discuss the status quo of doctoral training in Germany, present examples of good practice in the internationalisation of structured doctoral programmes and to compare experience in implementing structured doctoral programmes. It became evident at the event how urgently necessary it is to gener-ate empirically valid data on the number and situation of doctoral students in order to devise appropriate strategies with respect to the challenges which go hand in hand with the internationalisation of doctoral education.

Modern high-quality research is possible only at the in-ternational level. To enhance the quality of graduate edu-cation and to support the international research within Biopolis Dresden, the Medizinische Fakultät Carl Gustav Carus offers the international PhD programme “Endothe-lium in Health & Disease”. The focus of this programme is on the importance of the endothelium as a regulator of manifold physiological and pathological processes in vascular organs. This in-cludes several cardiovascular diseases, but also immuno-logical, metabolic and neuronal diseases as well as cancer. This programme provides research and training oppor-tunities for both national and international graduate stu-dents with biological or medical backgrounds who would like to obtain a PhD in endothelial cell biology and cardiovas-cular research. The offi cial language of the programme is English. The programme provides a structured curriculum sup-plemented by practical courses, journal clubs and retreats. The modules cover the main aspects of modern cardiology, immunology, oncology, physiology and microcirculation. The progress of the thesis is monitored by a Thesis Ad-visory Committee (TAC) on the basis of annual reports (1

per year). PhD students enrolled in the PhD pro-gramme are encouraged to present their scien-tifi c results at international scientifi c meetings and conferences, attend research schools and career events (i.e. career days, job exchanges etc.).

„GGL International“ is the international doctoral pro-gramme of the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL). At the GGL, all instruction is in English. Doctoral researchers perform their scientifi c work and training in 8 interdisciplinary research sections (Nutri-tion and Metabolism, Infection and Immunity, Heart, Lung and Blood Vessels, Protein and Nucleic Acid Interactions, Neurosciences, Reproduction in Man and Animals, Bio-resources and Biotechnology, Molecular Interactions at Natural Interfaces) and receive training in professional skills within the framework of the Doctoral Development Programme. GGL International provides integration services for the approximately 35 new international doctoral students who start their research projects at the GGL every semes-ter. These include the provision of personal mentors during the fi rst days in Giessen, German language courses held at intensive and advanced levels and integration training. At the same time, all doctoral students receive excellent training to prepare them for an international research career. The GGL International guest speaker program al -lows young researchers to meet outstanding international experts while in Giessen. Since life sciences in general strongly depend on methodologies, a major task of GGL

International is to build a database of possible partners for lab exchanges abroad. GGL Inter-national thus also funds research stays for German and international doctoral students in order to promote its members‘ methodological skills as well as helping them work indepen-dently in their professional networks.

Performing research at two universities at the same time? – The bi-national PhD programme ”From Signal Processing to Be-haviour” (SiPB) offers this opportunity. The programme is open to all PhD students working in the fi elds of Neuro- and Cog-nitive Sciences at the University of Leipzig and Newcastle, as both universities combine clinical and basic research with the common goal of a better understanding of human behaviour and underlying cognitive processes. Both research sites offer excellent technical facilities for state-of-the-art research in the fi elds of Neuro- and Cognitive Sciences and an optimal intellec-tual environment for the education and training of young scien-tists. In Leipzig, the contributing research groups are part of the Top Level Research Area ‘Brain, Behaviour, and Language’ and belong to the Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, to the Medical Faculty, the Max Planck Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthro-pology, and the Max Planck Institute of Mathematics in the Sci-ences. In Newcastle the Institute of Neuroscience contributes to the SiPB. Supervision is provided jointly by both Universities. Language Courses – SiPB offers and funds language courses in German and English. Colloquia and Workshops – SiPB arranges meetings to bring together both the SiPB’s PhD students and leading sci-entists in their fi elds of research. Members of the Graduate School are part of the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at Ludwig Maximilians Univer-sity (LMU) of Munich, based at the HighTechCampusLMU in Grosshadern-Martinsried in the south of Munich. The more than 25 participating research groups, internation-ally renowned for their innovative approaches to research, employ state-of-the-art technologies to answer funda-mental questions relating to basic and applied research from molecules to systems. Students benefi t from the quality of research and teaching at the LMU while living in the attractive city of Munich. Research at LSM covers the areas of Anthropology, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Evo-lution, Genetics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Plant Sci-ences, Systematics and Zoology. Research activities are complemented by lectures, seminars and workshops (all held in English). The purpose of the programme is to im-part not only the technical expertise necessary for success in research, but also skills that are indispensable for every thoughtful and responsible scientist. The latter include the ability to communicate in simple language, and a willing-ness to address bioethical issues and participate in the public debates they may provoke. Every summer LSM invites outstanding bachelor (at least 7th semester) and master students with a strong background in the Natural Sciences to join Graduate School members for eight weeks of challenging and de-

manding research. Students from all countries except Germany are eligible to participate, and scholarships are available to cover travel and accommodation expenses.

Binational Graduations Oviedo/Osnabrück Universität Osnabrück

The IPID project established between the University of Os-nabrück and the University of Oviedo (Spain) is based on a long-standing collaboration between the two principle coordinators, Prof. Jürgen J. Heinisch and Prof. Rosaura Rodicio. In 2006 these contacts led already to a success-ful ERASMUS student exchange. With the newly installed IPID programme the number of scientists and biological disciplines participating in bi-lateral collaboration has grown signifi cantly. A variety of aspects from Molecular and Cellular Biology have been included, for example, with members from the fi elds of Microbiology (both ba-sic and applied aspects), Genetics, Biochemistry, Zoology, and Neurobiology. This broad and varied group is open for scientifi c discussions between all participants in an inter-disciplinary perspective. A constant exchange of scientifi c ideas and basic methodology is assured in this manner. Two offi cial supervisors, one from each university, are as-signed to each Ph.D. student in order to fulfi ll the require-ments of both universities to earn a bi-national degree. In addition to this international degree, participating Ph.D. students profi t greatly from the scientifi c exchange program, allowing each of them to perform research at the partner university for at least a six-month period. Dur-ing this stay abroad, students not only gain experience in different scientifi c approaches, but also take part in spe-

cialized courses, like training in scientifi c Eng-lish. Moreover, regular seminars broaden their scientifi c knowledge and language skills. Guest speakers also include representatives from bio-technological companies in order to increase the visibility of the program and establish con-tacts for future employment.

International Doctorate for Experimental Approaches to LanguageAnd Brain (IDEALAB) Universität Potsdam

IDEALAB is a laboratory-based, 3-year doctoral pro-gramme. The programme is jointly offered by a transna-tional consortium with an integrated study programme along with required mobility between the participating in-stitutions: University of Potsdam, University of Groningen, University of Trento, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Macquarie University. The aim of IDEALAB is to train young researchers for original and independent research on experimental and clinical aspects of language and the brain in unimpaired populations of adults and children as well as in language-impaired children and adults. The experimental and clinical scope of this programme requires expertise and innovative techniques from Neuroscience and Experimental Linguis-tics and Psychology as well as assessment and interven-tion techniques from Speech Pathology. In addition to the fi ve full partner universities, associ-ated members from Research and Development industries contribute in various ways to the programme. Further-more, there are seven clinics associated with the consor-tium, among others a non-European rehabilitation center in Moscow, which is the largest centre for language dis-orders in the world. The associated clinics provide intern-ships to study impaired language of children and adults and methods of assessment and therapy. All partner universities apply common application and selection procedures, common quality assessment and programme monitoring, a joint curriculum and a common research training programme cumulating in a joint degree. Mobility in the framework of the research project as well as for an obligatory internship to the full partner and as-

sociated members is mandatory. All candidates attend joint summer and winter schools. Apart from these specialized core courses, transversal skills and language and culture classes are of-fered locally in the programme.

The programme “Mechanisms of Molecular Transfor-mations“ between the University of Heidelberg (Fac-ulty of Chemistry and Geosciences) and the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Imaging) was set up for the period 2011 – 2013 as a DAAD-financed IPID-PL2 program. It is based on long-established collaboration between the Heidelberg group of Peter Comba and the UQ groups of Graeme Hanson and Lawrie Gahan, which has led to a Dual PhD agree-ment between Heidelberg and UQ. It is also based on col-laboration between the Heidelberg groups (Dirk Herten, Stephen Hashmi, Peter Comba) in various network pro-grammes (SFB, Graduiertenkolleg), and collaboration with various UQ groups (Comba: Hanson, Gahan, Riley, Schenk; Hashmi: Wentrup, Williams; Herten: Smith, Parekh). The subject area “Mechanisms of Molecular Transformations” covers aspects of (organic) synthesis, mechanistic and spectroscopic methods of transition metal compounds, biologically and medicinally relevant systems as well as molecular modelling. Each of the PhD students involved has a co-supervisor from the partner university for one of the subprojects covered in her/his PhD thesis, and she/he will spend around half a year with the partner group. Each of the group leaders involved visits the partner institution

once or twice for approximately four weeks dur-ing the programme in order to organize student exchange and discuss the collaboration proj-ects. It is also planned to organize one or two scientific meetings with most of the group lead-ers and students involved in order to report and discuss progress in the research projects.

The fi eld of Optics and Photonics is of tremendous impor-tance in solving today’s fundamental questions in basic research and is an outstanding technology in handling long-term social and technological challenges. The Abbe School of Photonics (ASP) unites all optics-related educa-tional activities at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering Jena, the Helmholtz Institute Jena and the Institute for Photonic Technologies. The goal is to establish the ASP as one of the leading international edu-cational centers for Optics and Photonic Technologies. For this reason, the ASP cooperates with Germany’s optics in-dustry, whose excellent economic development in rapidly developing international markets is being constrained at present by a lack of highly qualifi ed specialists. Based on a public-private partnership between industry, state govern-ment, federal government and EU, an international master degree programme is already being offered in cooperation with renowned international partner universities operated successfully in Erasmus Mundus and Atlantis programmes. Now the ASP is expanding the internationalization of the existing doctorate programmes in the same way. The qualifying concept for the doctorates of the ASP is con-sequentially research-oriented and an integral part of the research projects of the involved partners. The programme is based on the principles of academic freedom, competi-

The aim of the Indian-German Graduate School of Ad-vanced Organic Synthesis for a Sustainable Future “IN-DIGO”, founded by the Chemistry Departments of the University of Regensburg and the University of Technol-ogy, Munich, is – by the exchange of PhD students – to increase the awareness of Sustainable Chemistry in India and to intensify scientifi c transfer between the two partici-pating countries. The project is fi nanced by the two indus-trial partners BASF SE and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, who pay for the fellowships of Indian exchange students; the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) assumes coordination, travel and training costs. Indian PhD students who are enrolled in a PhD pro-gramme in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Medicinal Chem-istry at one of the partner institutes can join the INDIGO PhD network. The research work of all participating stu-dents is based on individual projects that relate to the overall research profi le of the PhD network. As part of the programme, Indian participants pass a six-month project research stay at one of the German partner institutions, followed by a two-month internship at BASF SE in Ludwig-shafen, Germany. In return, German PhD students join the INDIGO PhD net to perform a six-month research project stay at one of the Indian partner institutions. A yearly re-search conference, alternately in Germany and India, fol-lowed by an intensive course on Sustainable Chemistry, completes the programme. The partners in India: Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore; Indian In-stitute of Technology Madras (IITM), Chennai; Indian Insti-tute of Technology (IITK), Kanpur; Indian Institute of Tech-

ZUSYS is a PhD programme focussing on “Dependable Hardware / Software Systems” based at the Brandenburg University of Technology. Electronic components with “embedded“ comput-ers and software make up the core of most “intelligent“ systems of today. Therefore the reliability of such systems critically depends on the quality of integrated systems in hardware and software. Traditionally, research and educa-tion bearing relevance to the dependability of electronic systems in general have taken place under different labels and in different scientific communities with relative little interaction, such as software technology, distributed sys-tems and fault-tolerant computing. Top-level engineers of today often may bear overall responsibility for the design and development of electronic sub-systems. They therefore need an education that gives them an overview of the state-of-the-art in all relevant ar-eas of technology. ZUSYS offers a programme of studies combining fo-cused research in a specific area of system design and test with an additional education for a general overlook. Such an approach enhances the attractiveness of post-graduate studies and produces candidates that are of greater value to European industries due to their “broad overview”. Covering all basic technologies relating to dependable system design requires collaboration between several universities in the development of attractive PhD pro-grammes in “dependable systems”. ZUSYS hence links up Brandenburg University of Technology (Germany), Tallinn University of Technology

(Estonia), Poznan University of Technology (Poland) and Technical University of Liberec (Czech Republic). These partners jointly support a programme of advanced education at the PhD level, which is being made part of the local PhD programmes at these universities.

The Dresden University of Technology, the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Tech-nische Universität Wien are jointly offering the European PhD Programme in Computational Logic, a unique, three-year, distributed, and structured programme with built-in mobility and a strong international orientation. Within its foundation track, doctoral candidates select two European universities and a non-European associated research insti-tution (either National ICT Australia, Universidad de Chile, or Simon Fraser University in Canada) in an attempt to solve an open foundational research problem; their main career objective after graduation should be to continue founda-tional research at international research institutions and universities. Within its application-oriented track, doctoral candidates select two European universities and an associ-ated industrial partner (either IBM CAS in Rome, Lixto Soft-ware GmbH in Vienna, or Ontoprise GmbH in Karlsruhe) in an attempt to solve an open use-inspired and applied research problem; their main career objective after gradua-tion should be to continue application-oriented research at an enterprise or in cooperation with business and industry. The PhD programme consists of course work, PhD thesis and its defense. Doctoral candidates are required to have at least two peer-reviewed publications at leading in-ternational conferences or in leading international journals relating to some of the results produced by their PhD thesis prior to its acceptance. Doctoral candidates are jointly and closely monitored by supervisors from their selected European universities and associated partner institutions; together they specify

the PhD project as well as individual mobility schemes in such a manner that candidates work for at least six months at each of the selected universities and for at least three months at the selected associated partner institution.

PromISE, the International Doctoral Programme in Engi-neering at the University of Duisburg-Essen, is a bi-na-tional and structured programme between the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Kuala Lumpur. The programme is de-signed as research project for 3 to 4 years, accompanied by courses and colloquia. Research projects should be interdisciplinary by na-ture, combining different fields of science, either within faculties of Engineering or bridging with other faculties. All topics should also combine strength and support of both partner universities and societies. Current research clusters include Numerical Methods, Environmental Sciences with an emphasis on Water and Waste Management, Modern Materials, Prefabricated Construction and Building Physics, Power Systems and Distribution, Communication Engineering, Education and Medical Engineering. All projects are supervised by two professors, one from each university; research is performed at both uni-versities in line with the so-called sandwich scheme. Such arrangements are set out in a Cotutelle agreement. Doctoral candidates are offered the unique chance to obtain a double degree as PhD and Dr.-Ing., perform research in an international scientific environment and be-come familiar with different cultures.

32 | HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU)

The HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) is the only uni-versity in Europe focusing exclusively on “built” environ-ment and metropolitan development. It is located in the “heart” of Hamburg and part of the “HafenCity”, one of today’s largest intra-urban development projects. By in-tegrating a comprehensive range of relevant disciplines, i.e. Urban Planning, Architecture, Geomatics, and Civil Engineering, the HCU offers a systematic and creative ap-proach to the complexity of understanding and design of the urban environment. The doctoral programme “Urban Metamorphoses” is dedicated to a transdisciplinary research on the social, cultural, economic, ecological, technological, and spatial challenges in understanding the processes of change in urban and city contexts. Metamorphoses stand for physi-cal and structural change in a broadest sense. Cities have changed and are constantly changing in a multitude of dif-ferent aspects and dimensions. There is a dearth, however, of systematic research on the forces and impact of urban change and the role of urban planning intervention in the context of the complexity of urban change, even though this is key for understanding the conditions in the produc-tion of space in contemporary urban societies. After enroll-ing in the doctoral programme ”Urban Metamorphoses”, doctoral students enter a laboratory to develop an aware-ness of urban change and future planning intervention, identifying metropolitan questions of tomorrow. The pro-

gramme provides intensive doctoral education with excellent theoretical and methodological research training.

“Sustainable and Effi cient Agriculture in Central, South- Eastern and Eastern Europe“ (MOEL) develops a specifi c training programme and accompanying measures espe-cially for the growing number of doctoral students from Central, South-Eastern and Eastern European countries at the University of Hohenheim. The already existing PhD Study Programme of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences as well as central further education and counselling activities at the University of Hohenheim serve as basis and orien-tation to design and establish specifi c additional project measures for ‘MOEL’ doctoral students. ‘MOEL’ targets intensive research and interdisciplin-ary exchange on topical questions concerning agriculture, environmental sustainability and food and life sciences in connection with present-day developments in the tran-sition countries of Central-, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe. Interdisciplinary colloquiums and an annual au-tumn academy exploring a central topic are thus two main measures of the project. This supports linkages between different disciplines within the university, but also seeks to strengthen the research network between the University of Hohenheim and universities in the home countries of the PhD-students. To support the quality and success of PhD projects and the future entry into professional life, specifi c additional possibilities on offer include personal and language skills development, project management competency and prac-

The PhD Programme at the Institute of Biomedical Engi-neering and Informatics of the University of Technology Ilmenau is built around an international research project. The aim of this project is the development of autonomous microsystems for biosensor technology for measurement of human parameters and biosignals. Microsystems should be autonomous in three aspects: self-supply by energy har-vesting from intrinsic energies of man i.e. by transforma-tion of mechanical energy into electric energy; measure-ment of human parameters in situ as well as in vivo for good precision and continuity by implanting microsystems in the human body; wireless data transfer from the body to a collecting station outside of the body. In all three fi elds extensive basic research and development is necessary. In Ilmenau the Center for Micro- and Nanotechnology of the University of Technology in Ilmenau works on aspects of microsystems and microfabrication of energy harvest-ing as well as on wireless communication. The Faculty of Electricity and Information Technology at the University of Kosice works on wireless communication systems and the Institute for Information Technology and Mathematics at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava develops sensor networks and communication systems. The three universities jointly supervise doctoral re-search in these fi elds and combine their forces and re-sources in this PhD programme, providing candidates the

unique opportunity to work in a truly interna-tional research project, benefi tting from differ-ent approaches and expertise.

German-Ukrainian PHD-Programme (DUPro) Universität Magdeburg

The German-Ukrainian Doctoral Training Network seeks to support research cooperation between the Otto-von- Guericke-University Magdeburg and the National Techni-cal Universities of Kyiv, Donetsk and Kharkov in the fi eld of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. This cooperation is based on a long-standing partnership which has resulted from joint projects in research and education. The Univer-sity of Magdeburg and the Ukrainian partners stage joint study programmes in Engineering in Kyiv, Donetsk and Kharkov. A considerable number of alumni of these pro-grammes pursue their doctoral education in Magdeburg. Creating a Binational Doctoral Training Network has hence been a coherent step in advancing existing joint PhD proj-ects and bringing them together in a research network to foster the exchange of experience and discuss achieve-ments in joint workshops with German colleagues. PhD students can take advantage of scientifi c experience and research results produced by both sides. Participants in the German-Ukrainian Doctoral Train-ing Network are enrolled as PhD students at Magdeburg University and their home university. A PhD project is joint-ly coordinated and supervised by a German and Ukrainian supervisor. Students present their results in regular work-shops . The PhD thesis has to be written in German or Eng-lish and the Ukrainian PhD student is expected to defend the doctoral thesis in Magdeburg to be awarded the Ger-man PhD diploma.

The emphasis of the network is placed on research projects related to automotive and energy effi ciency. This scientifi c focus is in full accordance with the main research scope of the participating universities and corresponds to one of the most challenging topics in Engineer-ing Sciences.

As a cooperative project of three outstanding scientifi c in-stitutes and institutions - the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), the Hertie School of Governance (HSoG), and the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) – the Berlin Gradu-ate School for Transnational Studies (BTS) constitutes a distinctive platform for ambitious, innovative, and cutting-edge research in transnational and international relations. It offers a rigorous and intense English-language PhD pro-gramme for exceptionally-talented graduate students with a strong focus on Social Science theories and methods. It also welcomes applications from adjacent disciplines such as History, Economics, and Law. Since its foundation in 2008, the BTS has successfully established a fi rst-rate reputation for its PhD programme, and now attracts graduates from distinguished institu-tions from all over the world. Coming from many different backgrounds, cultural diversity is one of the main charac-teristics of our student body. Through strategic partnerships and cooperation, our PhD candidates gain insight into the work of other re-search centers. International partners round off the BTS network by co-hosting workshops on current issues and research methods. The BTS also offers its students fi nancial support for their research stays and conference trips on top of their respective scholarships. Combining the strength of

all three institutions enables us to offer a very broad variety of research focuses. Thus, the BTS creates a unique place where young researchers fi nd an appropriate setting for their investiga-tions, intellectual exchange, and cooperation with other programme participants as well as with renowned scholars working at the fore-front of their respective fi elds of research.

European Doctorate in Economics-Network (EDE-NET) Universität Bielefeld

The Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Manage-ment (BiGSEM) has been offering a structured, interna-tionally oriented doctoral programme since 2001. Since then cooperative programmes in doctoral education have been established with several distinguished European universities. Bielefeld University is part of a consortium of seven European Universities, which have been offering a European doctoral programme entitled ‘European Doctor-ate in Economics (EDE)’ to highly qualifi ed international students since the autumn of 2011. Students enrolled in this programme undergo a curriculum that is fully coor-dinated by the partners, are supervised by faculty mem-bers of at least two of the partner universities and spend their study time at two or three of the partner universities. Students graduating from the programme either receive a joint degree offered by the two (or three) partner universi-ties where they have studied or a double degree under a Cotutelle agreement. The partners of Bielefeld University in the consortium are Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, University of Amsterdam, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Università Ca’Foscari Venezia, Université Catholique de Louvain and L’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. The fi rst four of these partners together with Bielefeld Uni-

versity are in a position to award joint degrees to students. EDE is the fi rst structured doctoral programme in Economics with such a strong in-ternational focus and is a true pioneering effort. In Bielefeld the EDE-NET programme is carried out under the auspices of BiGSEM, which pro-vides the basic infrastructure.

The structured three-year PhD programme in International Development Studies (PhD IDS) is offered by the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy of Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) in cooperation with the Faculties of Economics, Law, Geography and Social Science. The pro-gramme is taught entirely in English. It is embedded with-in the framework of the RUB Research School, one of the winning programmes of the German Excellence Initiative. The programme builds on three fundamental pillars: It is a structured PhD programme with a strong interdisciplinary and international focus. Participants can choose from a variety of tailor-made teaching modules while at the same time working on their own research projects. A supervisor is assigned to each re-search project. All supervisors of the PhD candidates hold professorial posts at the Ruhr-University Bochum or other German universities and are affi liated to one of the fol-lowing disciplines: Economics, Social Sciences, Law, Geog-raphy. The PhD IDS attracts people from very diverse study and regional backgrounds worldwide. In this context, the DAAD-funded project “PhD IDS goes Europe” aims at strengthening the integration of doctoral students in European research networks and fostering inter- Euro-pean mobility of postgraduate students. Furthermore, the programme encourages the mutual exchange of visiting lecturers and post-graduate students with European uni-versities offering similar PhD programmes. Enrolment in the PhD IDS takes place on an annual basis. Candidates with an advanced degree in Economics, Law, Social or Political Science, Development Manage-

ment, Human Geography or related subjects from all over the world who aspire to further scientifi c qualifi cations relating to “Interna-tional Development Studies” and have a strong interest in interdisciplinary work are invited to apply.

Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World (IPP Transnational) Universität Frankfurt am Main

The international PhD programme “Democracy, Knowl-edge, and Gender in a Transnational World” (IPP Trans-national) is located at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Goethe University Frankfurt. It involves the academic ex-pertise and research skills of supervisors from the fi elds of Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology and Social Psychology. The IPP Transnational’s profi le connects three thematic fi elds that combine central research issues of the 21st century. Emphasis is placed on the interrelation between current transnational social transformations and the development of democracy, the (re)formation of the gender order, as well as bioscientifi c fi ndings and prac-tices. In the IPP’s lecture series, Forum Transnational, re-nowned scholars from Germany and abroad discuss their most recent work on topics and concepts related to the IPP’s thematic fi elds. Besides the attractive programme run by the Faculty’s International Postgraduate Center (IPC), additional work-shops and supervision measures are available to PhD can-didates at the IPP Transnational that provide ideal condi-tions for attaining a PhD and precipitate completion of the thesis. Within the scope of the programme, PhD candidates have the opportunity to spend one or two semesters at one of its international partner universities in the U.S.A., England, Denmark, Switzerland, and Sweden in order to gain international experience and advance their research work considerably. After successfully completing the pro-gramme, the initiators envision the PhD candidates as having obtained comprehensive academic training at the highest level, having expanded their theoretical, methodi-

cal, and interdisciplinary skills and acquired key multidisciplinary qualifi cations that enable them to begin a promising career both within and outside the university.

The European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE) is an excellence programme based at the University of Ham-burg sponsored by the European Commission under the Erasmus Mundus scheme. It offers the unique opportunity to study Law and Economics at the PhD level in (at least) three different countries. The programme prepares prom-ising economists and lawyers for an academic career in a research fi eld of growing importance or for responsible positions in government, research organizations and inter-national consulting groups. EDLE presents a combination of course work and research. The curriculum is devised to provide advanced and challenging education both to lawyers and econo-mists. Candidates are able to choose between basic and advanced courses depending on their educational back-ground. On top of the coursework, candidates start work-ing on their theses from the beginning of their studies. In the fi rst semester, from October to April, candidates stay in Bologna and attend introductory and advanced courses in Microeconomics, Econometrics and Financial Economics in line with their backgrounds as either lawyers or economists. In the second semester the Summer School in Ham-burg introduces fi rst-year candidates to leading interna-tional researchers in Law and Economics during an inten-sive three to six-week lecture programme. In their third semester, candidates attend the cycle of seminars scheduled at the Rotterdam Institute for Law and Economics to refi ne their methods and research topic.

Afterwards candidates move to one of the participating universities, depending on their fi eld of specialization. Candidates who special-ize in Development Law and Economics are of-fered the possibility to visit the affi liated part-ner, the Indira Ghandi Insitute of Development, Research, Mumbai for a research stay.

Social and ecological problems can hardly be treated sepa-rately any longer more in our age of ´globalization`. This goes for countries in the Global South and their relations with countries of the North in particular. For instance, the development goal of increasing living standards in coun-tries like China and Brazil is generally welcomed. But this is achieved through highly energy-intensive industrial growth. Effects of climate change often hit poor and rural regions in the South hardest, although these contribute least to it. Intensifying trade relations between North and South and increasing competition in world markets allow cheaper consumer goods and can thereby create eco-nomic prosperity while at the same time threatening to undermine labour and ecological standards. Despite the widely accepted paradigm of ´sustainable development` signifi cant integration of social, ecological, technological and economic policies is still lacking. This is due at least in part to constraints on academic research, which frequently addresses interrelated problems along disciplinary or the-matic lines. In the fi eld of Social and Ecological Research in North-South Relations`, the doctoral programme Global Social Policies and Governance at Kassel University seeks to overcome such constraints by bringing together PhD students and faculty members from different disciplines in the Social Sciences. The programme involves about 20 PhD projects analysing actors, institutions and processes relevant in the making of labour and ecological policies. Interdependencies between the local, (trans-) national and global levels play a signifi cant role in this research

as well as a regional focus on issues and cases in Latin America, as this world region has been comparatively neglected in this context to date. The programme’s general aim is to contribute to the dialogue between North and South on common social and ecological issues, primarily by organising civil society actors as well as the transfer of knowledge and technology.

The process of the European Union’s enlargement to in-clude Eastern Europe has transformed today’s EU of 27 member states into something fundamentally different from the pre-1989 European Community. The bi-national PhD network “The New Europe”, based at the University of Leipzig working in cooperation with the University of Vroclav, brings together an East German and a Polish uni-versity to investigate from a historical, cultural and social science perspective four core fields in the recent transfor-mation of Europe: (1) Border and territorialisation – the EU as a model for macro-regional integration?; (2) European enlargement and globalization; (3) Cultural transfer and transnationalisation in Eastern-Central Europe; and (4) Historical conflicts and their current treatment in Europe. In using the term “the new Europe”, partners in Leipzig and Eastern-Central Europe are referring on the one hand tongue-in-cheek to former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s polemic statement back in 2003. On the other hand they have in mind the London-based journal “New Europe” during World War I, in which intellectuals from Great Britain and Eastern-Central Europe discussed the fu-ture order of the continent. And they of course underscore the new quality exhibited by the EU’s internal structure as well as of its global challenges. As a rule, PhD students are supervised by scholars from both universities: the University of Leipzig and the

The Doctoral Training Programme in the Learning Sci-ences (DTP-LS) is the central training component at the Munich Center of the Learning Sciences, based at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. This programme provides an interdisciplinary environment where doctoral students can master skills in conducting state-of-the-art research in the learning sciences. It is founded on the belief that learning sciences cannot be addressed adequately within a single discipline. As a result, the DTP-LS offers a broad interdisciplinary curriculum focusing on relevant research results and theories related to learning from Educational Science, Psychology, Computer Science, Economics, Sociol-ogy, Biology, Mathematics and Medicine. All these disci-plines employ a broad array of empirical and quantitative approaches (ranging from brain-imaging methods, obser-vation methods of behavior and cognition and evaluation methods, to representative surveys). The quality of the doctoral research is ensured by systematic interdisciplin-ary supervision. Furthermore, a wide array of activities is offered to the doctoral students, including content-related courses, methodology courses, courses on key qualifi ca-tions (e.g. scientifi c writing, teaching, ethics of research) and special guest lectures by renowned learning scientists. The DTP-LS encourages doctoral students to play an active part in the international science community, e.g. by provid-ing conference grants and funds for research stays abroad with their international supervisors.

The PhD-Net „Das Wissen der Literatur/The Knowledge of Literature“ is a bi-national doctoral programme, hosted by the Institut für deutsche Literatur at Humboldt University of Berlin. The programme closely collaborates with the De-partment of German at the University of California, Berke-ley, the Department of German at Princeton University, and the Department of Germanic Languages and Litera-tures at Harvard University in the USA. Starting in October 2008, the PhD-Net has been of-fering German and US-American/international doctoral students a stimulating environment for cooperative research, work, and discussion as well as a structured curriculum ranging from coursework to subject-specifi c classes and methodological training. Doctoral candidates in the PhD-Net study abroad at partner institutions for up to two terms. During this time they participate in the specifi c teaching programme while being supervised by an international faculty member until the completion of the dissertation project. Fifteen full-time professors work in the core faculty of the PhD-Net; an additional faculty of renowned European and US scholars complement the pro-gramme as mentors. Alongside six German candidates, the PhD-Net accepts six international doctoral students (two from each of the US-American partner institutions) in its programme each year. The focus on the relationship between knowledge and literature is a response to recent methodological consider-ations in Literary Studies and forms the basis for the PhD exchange and joint academic instruction and supervision of international doctoral projects. German and English are the languages of the programme. PhD-Net is part of the

Humboldt Graduate School, which is the service organization offering structured programmes for doctoral studies at Humboldt University of Berlin.

The European PhD-net “Literary and Cultural Studies”, based at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), offers a distinctly international research training programme in the fi elds of literary and cultural studies jointly designed by the participating institutions: JLU, the Finnish Doctoral Pro-gramme for Literary Studies at Helsinki University, the Re-search Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) at the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon, the Doctorate School of Humanities at the University of Bergamo and the Departments of English and Baltic Languages, Finnish and German at the University of Stockholm. PhDnet offers a clearly structured, three-year doctoral programme with high academic standards. Members per-form their doctoral studies at JLU and one of the partner institutions, where their projects are jointly supervised. The programme integrates doctoral candidates into national and international academic communities and facilitates international PhD students’ entry into the German aca-demic landscape. Joint events such as conferences, sympo-siums or master classes implement the tight network structures envisioned by PhD-net. Doctoral students more-over profi t from co-operation with fi ve international non-academic partner institutions as well as individual career

coaching offered on a regular basis. At the end of their studies, PhD-net doctoral candidates are awarded binational degrees.

The interdisciplinary PhD programme ProArt at the Depart-ment of the Arts (Kunstwissenschaften) at Ludwig Maxi-milians University of Munich with its fi ve subject areas of Art History, Art Education, Musicology, Music Education and Theater Studies offers structured and research-orient-ed doctoral training. The guiding idea behind ProArt is the realisation that the Arts are increasingly marked by dissolving boundaries and mutual fertilisation. These to some extent controver-sial developments affect not only artistic practice – they also shape academic investigation of art, music, theatre and fi lm. The aim is to establish the Arts as key discipline(s) in the investigation of aesthetic, (inter)cultural and (inter)medial practices. The programme is planned for six semesters. Teach-ing is performed jointly by the participating professors. In contrast to the case until now, graded certifi cates of achievement required for conferral of a doctorate degree are predominantly acquired in courses which are specially tailored to the needs of doctoral students. Doctoral stu-dents have the opportunity to present and discuss their research in regular colloquiums, symposiums and work-shops. This PhD programme is aimed at postgraduates from LMU and elsewhere who are particularly qualifi ed and

specifi cally trained in their area of expertise. If possible, one-third of these postgraduates are to come from abroad. Their supervision com-bines the advantages of individual supervision with those of team supervision.

This Doctoral Programme focuses on the interdisciplinary study of Buddhism in its many forms within its historical, cultural, and social context. It offers a structured, research-oriented three-year doctoral study course. As a co-opera-tion project between Indology and Tibetology, Japanology, Religious Studies and Sinology, the programme combines philological, philosophical and historical issues as well as questions of religious and cultural studies. Research sourc-es are mainly texts, but also include visual representations and artefacts of material culture as well as interviews and field work observation. In a specially designed curriculum, students can link their specific research into a dialogue with current issues in Buddhist Studies. The problems, me-thodical approaches and results of dissertation projects are integrated into a broader theoretical and historical context, making possible a lively exchange of ideas. In-tensive supervision by mentoring teams offers advice from various perspectives and helps students complete doctoral projects at the highest level. To strengthen the scientific and communicative skills of the doctoral students, the research-oriented study programme is complemented by workshops and transferable skills training as well as ele-ments providing conference and teaching experience. In addition, the integration of doctoral students into interdis-ciplinary and international networks promotes their pro-fessional and scientific development. The expertise of the

Munich faculty is constantly supplemented by German and international guest speakers. The Doctoral Programme cannot provide scholar-ships of its own, but German and international students are given advice and support in apply-ing for a scholarship with the German Academic Exchange Service or other organizations.

„smartNETWORK” is the umbrella organisation of Gradu-ate Schools in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Mün-ster University. smartNETWORK currently interlinks nine existing Graduate Schools. It thus unites many disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences on the one hand and a large number of excellent researchers on the other. Its mission is to qualify doctoral candidates as early-stage researchers with optimum research skills to assume lead-ing positions in society, to promote structured doctoral education in the respective faculties at Münster University and to create a transdisciplinary research environment for both doctoral candidates and established researchers. Transdisciplinary research in smartNETWORK is guided by the basic theme of “Decisions, Stragegies, and the Public”. Doctoral candidates contribute to the discussion of the basic theme with their own research projects. As the basic theme is not meant to be a single issue in research, they can by the same token focus on other aspects. All international doctoral candidates are integrated into one of the participating Graduate Schools, depending on the subject they have graduated in. Depending upon their research topic, a team of up to three supervisors is assigned to them. They benefi t from the central principles of structured doctoral training in smartNETWORK, e.g. an educational programme that combines a standardised

performance requirement with individual ac-tivities for education and that is designed to be completed within three years. Programme and supervision contracts between doctoral candi-date, Graduate School, and supervisors specify tasks, rights, and duties of all parties involved.
