UnderstandingtheNewInternationalStandardforOccupationalHealth&SafetyISO 45001 was developed taking into account the views of large and smallorganizations, government bodies, trades unions and worker representativeorganizations. In order to ensure the widest possible input is received from allstakeholders, ISO made the committee draft available to the public and allstakeholdersforcomment.

OHSAS 18001 Vs ISO 45001

WhatarethemajordifferencesbetweenOHSAS18001andISO45001?

ISO45001concentrateson the interactionbetweenanorganizationand itsbusinessenvironmentwhileOHSAS18001wasfocusedonmanagingOH&Shazardsandotherinternalissues.Butthestandardsalsodivergeinmanyotherways:

  ISO45001isprocess-based–OHSAS18001isprocedure-based  ISO45001isdynamicinallclauses–OHSAS18001isnot

ISO 45001 considers both risk and opportunities – OHSAS 18001 deals exclusivelywithrisk

  ISO45001includestheviewsofinterestedparties–OHSAS18001doesnot

OH&S is no longer treated as a “stand alone”, but must be viewed within theperspectiveofrunningasoundandsustainableorganization.

RiskandNo“preventiveaction”

TheAnnex SL text does not include a clauseon “Preventive action”, as it is nowassumedthatthewholesystemwillbeapreventivetool.

The concept of “risk-based” thinking has also been extended into drafting therequirementsinISO45001.

While ISO 45001 will address risks and opportunities, this will not requireorganizations to implement a full risk management system (as described in ISO31000).

  Riskswillneedtobeidentified,andappropriatecontrolsputinplace.
