Browning Mar al

At first glance the Browning Maral .30-06 calibre test rifle reminded me of the BAR Zenith by the same manufacturer – obviously the self-loading rifle served as the blueprint for the Maral’s design process. Naturally production reaps the benefits from the synergy. Where the BAR Zenith has a safety button in the trigger guard, the Maral has a blanking plate to close the hole. The plastic receiver with bolt, trigger, magazine lock and trigger guard are pinned to an alloy box.

There are plenty of hand-cocked straight-pull repeater rifles already on the market. But its self-closing bolt - thanks to a return spring - puts the new Browning Maral in a league of its own. But does this really help you in the field?

It is a simple bolt with a hammer and two coil springs. Before the first shot, the weapon is cocked using a cocking slide at the back of the receiver. To do so you need strong thumb pressure, as you have to push the cocking slide upwards at a steep angle. If you perform the motion quickly, there is an audible click as the cocking slide comes to a stop and the release button pops out of the slide. To un-cock you have to press the release button, which produces very little sound.

The trigger motion is similar to that of a self-loading rifle. The first stage is light (approx. 1 mm and 400 g resistance). Then the trigger unfortunately “crawls” somewhat (“Danach kriecht er leider etwas”) before it fires with 1510 gr resistance. The trigger resistance is still acceptable. This is an average trigger that requires training and practice [to work well].

The test weapon was fitted with a 20 mm thick Inflex II butt end; thanks to a supplied 7 mm adapter piece, the trigger length (the distance from the trigger to the edge of the butt end) was extended from 360 mm to 367 mm. The contact surface is well structured, and the stock easily slides in place when aiming. The Maral is manufactured with great care. Its walnut stock is nicely polished and perfectly oiled. The receiver is hard anodized. The barrel received a deep black bronzing treatment. The bolt carrier, bolt head and steel magazine were also bronzed. There are today better alternatives for corrosion protection, but this was no problem in this case. A bit of rain on parts that were not cleaned did not cause any corrosion.

In Brief

Plus» Excellent shooting performance» Very fast straight pull system» Compact turning lock» Hand cocking» Cold forged, fluted barrel» Excellent sight» Clip magazine» Replaceable butt end» Nicely oiled stock» Detachable stock» Very good finishing» Good balance» Lots of bang for the buck

Minus» Average trigger» Sluggish cocking slide

The rotating head bolt moves entirely inside its box. This is a disadvantage when it comes to cleaning the barrel, which is only possible by using a pull-through. If you use a cleaning rod there is a risk of damaging the muzzle, and this also leaves the cartridge chamber uncleaned. Another thing I did not like is the large opening for the bolt handle. In the field this makes it easier for dirt to enter the weapon. Experiments with twigs and sand did not affect the weapon’s function. Even so, the weapon must be thoroughly cleaned and moisture is never a good thing to have in a weapon.

The magazine for four standard-size rounds has a handy plastic bottom. The magazine is unlocked with a button in front of the trigger guard.

Detachable sling swivels

Stock and hand guard contain sockets for detachable swivels with push-button fasteners. Stock and hand guard are separate items, both are screwed unto the receiver. The stock can easily be detached for transport thanks to the screw behind the pistol grip. The modular design lets the customer build "his own” weapon. It is possible for instance to replace the wood pieces on the side with metal plates engraved with animal scenes. There are three grades of wood and several different stock designs available. Among them are hand guards with or without tulip-shaped front ends, and stocks in the Bavarian, German or Monte-Carlo styles. The stock ends with a replaceable Inflex II rubber butt in the “Old English” style. These rubber butts are available in 12, 20 or 25 millimetres.

New repeater rifle feel

The difference between the Maral straight pull system and other straight pull systems lies in the so called “Quick Reloading System”: there are rails at the bolt carrier that are attached to a block underneath the barrel. A leaf spring that rolls back onto itself functions as a return spring. Its bend however also touches the barrel. When the bolt is closed there is no notable force acting on the barrel.

When the bolt is opened, the rotating lock is turned via a machined cam and thus unlocked. Of course one must overcome the spring’s pressure (approx. 5 kg) when pulling back the action. This means that a strong pull is needed. In comparison: the actions of the Blaser R8 and the Heym SR30 move towards the face, but for the Merkel RX and the Browning Maral they remain inside the receiver.

The force required for opening and closing the Blaser R8 and the Heym SR30 is similar, quite small. For the Helix, it is slightly higher, but thanks to the gearing the stroke is quite short and the movement of the handle only half as long.

Increased force required

Opening the action of the Maral requires more effort because you are tensioning the retaining spring. That also means that you can simply release it once the bolt handle is pulled all the way back. The action closes automatically. That makes a bit more noise, but that is to be expected with self-loading rifles. Thus the repeater action for the Maral is much faster and in my opinion the rifle is much steadier against the shoulder. The return distance of the hand to the pistol grip is very short: this is an advantage compared to other repeater rifles.

A Leica Magnus 1 – 6,3x24 was mounted on the test rifle using an EAW flexible mount. On the range the .30-06 Maral’s performance was constant. Muzzle lift was noticeable, but recoil was well absorbed. Several series were fired with only a few mm variation in pattern. Firing the RWS 11.9 gr EVO at 100 m produced a five-shot dispersion of 26 mm, the Norma 9.7 g Kalahari a 28 mm dispersion and the Brenneke 8.5 g TUG a 31 mm dispersion.

Reliable performance

The Maral was performing reliably all the time, heating of the barrel produced no problems, even with a piping hot barrel the shooting in the film target shooting range presented no problems. In the short test-shoot the rifle performed very well in both the deer hunt and the boar hunt in the cornfields. The straight-pull repeater Maral lies well in the hands, it is nicely balanced and thanks to the innovative repeater system and a high-contrast aiming system it is a “rapid” rifle. It performs without problems and shoots very well.

With regard to the trigger, compact design and changing the barrel, the competition is slightly ahead. But on the other hand, the Browning Maral with its oiled chestnut stock is yours for less than two-and-a-half thousand Euros.
