LEKTÜREEMPFEHLUNG der Abteilung für Amerikanistik Stand: Herbst 2005 Vor dem Hintergrund der jüngsten Kanonrevision erscheint die Implementierung einer verbindlichen Leseliste der amerikanischen Literatur mehr als fraglich. Die Lehrenden der Abteilung für Amerikanistik haben sich zwar im Sinne einer ersten Orientierung dazu entschlossen, eine Leseliste von mögli-cherweise zu berücksichtigenden Werken zu erstellen, die die Zusammenhänge der amerikanischen Literatur reflektiert; allerdings beansprucht diese Leseliste keineswegs mehr als eine tentative Auswahl in unterschiedlichen Kontexten erachteter Werke zu sein. Die angefügte Leseliste von Werken der amerikanischen Literatur berücksichtigt einerseits wichtige Texte, die sich in der bisherigen Kanondiskussion bei aller Ausdifferenzierung “behauptet” haben, die andererseits allerdings in ihrer Gesamtheit den Studierenden des Faches eine zu weit gespannte Lektüre abverlangen und die eigene Schwerpunktbildung erschweren würde. Die nachfolgende Leseliste markiert aus diesem Grunde eine wesentlich geringere Anzahl von Autoren/Texten mit einem Asterisk (*). Diese Markierung selbst reflektiert Interessenschwerpunkte der Lehrenden, die allerdings ihrerseits auch zur Ausbildung selbst gegenläufiger Interessenschwerpunkte anregen sollen. In diesem Sinne möchten wir unsere Studierenden ermuntern, diese Leseliste fortzuschreiben, die vor-genommenen Markierungen durch eigene zu ersetzen und eine eigenständige Profilierung innerhalb bestimmter Epochenabschnitte vorzunehmen.* Wir möchten die Studierenden des Faches zugleich dazu anregen, den Dialog, den Sie persönlich mit der hier vorliegenden Liste führen, auch in Gesprächen mit den in der Abteilung Lehrenden einfließen zu lassen. Nur im Sinne einer solch stetigen Auseinandersetzung kann die Tendenz zur Kanonbildung immer neu reflektiert werden. * In Anbetracht einer deutlichen Konsolidierung der Kanondebatte bezüglich der amerikanischen Literatur bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts fiel es uns leichter, mit Asterisk gekennzeichnete Lektüre-empfehlungen in diesem Zeitraum anzugeben. Je mehr wir uns der Gegenwartsliteratur annähern, desto problematischer und willkürlicher werden Festschreibungen kanonisierter Texte. Dieser Sachverhalt manifestiert sich in einem sehr zurückhaltenden Gebrauch von mit einem Asterisk versehenen Lektüreempfehlungen. Für die aktuelle Gegenwartsliteratur verzichten wir gänzlich darauf, Empfehlungen auszusprechen und verweisen stattdessen auf die zur Zeit gängigen Anthologien (u.a. The Heath Anthology of American Literature, Norton Anthology of American Literarture, sowie gattungs- und themenbezogene Anthologien).
