Shamsi Letters (ُحرُوف َشْمِسيَّة )

مس، على األحرف الشمسية هي األحرف التي إذا وردت بأول الكلمة مسبوقًة بال التعريف فإنا تأتي مشددة، كما في كلمة الشَّعكس األحرف القمرية التي ال تأتي مشددة إذا ُسِبَقت بال التعريف، كما في كلمة القمر.

THEN it will NOT have a shaddah ّThere are 14 letters named as the Qamari Letters

The Moon اْلَقَمُر :Exampleق

Thelaamلwhenattachedtowordsstartingwith-الـ,issometimesassimilatedtotheletterfollowingitbecauseitisquickerandeasierthanfullyarticulatingit.ThelettersthatassimilatetheLaam,ل,arecalledShamsiLetters.

Example: for the word for “the sun”—> ْمُس 
 (shams) الشَّthe alif laam, - الـ is assimilated

What does it mean to assimilate? It means that instead of pronouncing the , ل laam, L-sound, the first consonant of the word gets doubled.

So, when we put to the Arabic word for “Sun”

A shaddah ( ) appears above a Shamsi letter to indicate that it is a doubled letter. ّ َشْمٌس

We don’t pronounce the “l” sound
